Like a warrior without enough sense to be using big weapons or wear heavy armor.
Well I can’t really say for sure why all items are soulbound I can give my thoughts on why it is that way.
Back when I used to play final fantasy 11, an online MMORPG pretty much same as this game is just older, a lot of the best items in the game were not soulbound or player bound if you will. This meant that gear could be acquired by anyone then sold on the in game Auction House (same as the trading post in GW2) for profit.
While this is fine at first the real problem came with rare items that were the best for their respective level. They only dropped off certain monsters usually very rare and difficult to find or defeat, so if you wanted said item you camped them. Well when you went to camp them you found gold seller bots/players everywhere and unless you did the same thing like run with 10 other players/bots or got really lucky you weren’t going to get the kill. Now the items in question did not always drop and when they did they usually were to a gold seller guild. What’s the big deal you might ask well they were the best items in the game( or components for said items) naturally everyone wanted them.
Since almost all the drops went to organized gold selling companies they could pretty much sell them for any price they wanted on the auction house and then just sell the gold right back to you, since if you really wanted the best gear you had two options do what they did or pay real money for them. Making items soulbound upon acquiring them eliminated the ability to make a profit off the item so only players who actually wanted the item would go hunt for them, making them still hard to acquire but not nearly as difficult.
I think similar cases in other MMO’s probably caused most games to just use a system like this, as for being soulbound on use well that is another one of those ways they use to get rid of in game gold, you have to buy new items instead of reusing the same items. Least that’s the only reason I can see why items are soulbound on use and not acquiring them.
Of course I liked the character system FFXI had instead of switching to a different character to switch professions you would just use the same character but play a different profession, you retained your old professions levels upon switching back (they were just called jobs in that game).
Well it can require like no in game effort other than buying them off the TP if you spend real life cash. Unless you count searching for items on the TP hard I suppose.
7/10 Better than my thief named Stabbystabsalot… I just ran out of decent names to try so went with that.
Wouldn’t a good fix for rangers be to increase their dps with ranged weapons as long as the ranger doesn’t have a pet out? Never played one but I hear the pets are about useless in pvp as dungeons anyways.
Well sorry thanks for the advice I guess all I hear when it comes to thieves in dungeons is use your shortbow.
Sigh it’s like really that’s it? If I wanted to run around and ranged attack all day I could have rolled a ranger, or warrior since they seem to have a higher dps ranged attack than rangers oddly enough.
@ Mars.
Actually it was a guild run with people who all but myself were not new to running dungeons or the one in particular seeing as I was the only n00b in it I’m doubtful about how much I could have possibly slowed things down. I don’t run around aggroing trash to the party and for the most part ask for advice before I do anything that might be stupid.
It didn’t feel fun or worthwhile in the least, no wow dungeon did I ever really leave where I didn’t have the least bit of fun or get something worth my time out of it, I’ve had bad experiences but even then I could laugh at them and say well it’ll go better next time. Playing a different spec would not have helped me enjoy myself anymore.
I’m a Theif who has to run through dungeons with a shortbow because there is nothing to heal me besides myself and almost everything did aoe damage weather or not I was close to them didn’t seem to matter except they did more damage up close, my conclusion this games dungeons are not in anyway melee friendly. Not being melee friendly pretty much destroys any fun way to play a primarily melee class wouldn’t you say?
Also I care more about pve than pvp almost all my gear had defensive stats for survivability, yes I knew I would take a hit to dps but you take even more when you can’t use melee abilities with a melee build. Even than I was taking damage like no one’s business.
You say don’t judge GW2 dungeons based on my first experience yet you clearly judged me and the group I was with my assuming we had no clue of what we were doing…
I know right the only reason they don’t already have one is they act as a gold sink to remove money from the game as if they don’t have enough of those in place…
I’m for it but they will bring up some BS most likely.
“Well we can’t have that because then you might actually earn slightly more money from gathering in game materials and we can’t have that can we. For the sake of the in game economy we must reject your idea. But wait! Let me direct you kindly to the in game store where you can easily create as much in game wealth as you would like provided you pay us real cash!”
Yeah I felt the same way about things. I’ve played MMORPG’s for a long time now, or so I’d like to think from FFXI, WoW, Aion and now GW2. I was expecting more myself, it didn’t really feel like teamwork anymore so than what I would do in a group event somewhere but at least the group event felt fun and you could play normally like your character would anywhere else.
In the dungeon (believe it was AC exp mode could be wrong) everyone just switched to ranged weapons and we tried to avoid most hard battles. I guess if we had a guardian it would have made some of those fights “easier”. I guess it’s not required to have a guardian just takes forever otherwise. Seemed to me a guardian was a lot like having a tank/heals, but they claim there is no such thing in this game.
Then we got about 30 minutes into it and the npc that continues our journey got bugged, so we all just ended up quitting. It wasn’t the best experience and certainly left me with a bad impression about this game. More so when I see on these forums any exploits or so called “exploits” that allow someone to farm gold or make money at a faster rate than normal get dealt with exceedingly fast yet bugs in dungeons are just left in the game? It’s not a new dungeon so why hasn’t it been fixed? Why nerf anyway in game where people can make money faster as well? Also why would people be skipping most of your dungeons if they felt they were worth the time to complete them normally?
Overall I just felt like I had the least amount of actual fun running that dungeon and honestly even if I had completed it I doubt I would have felt differently. I’m seeing this as a trend though in MMO games, they are becoming less about fun and more about pointless grind. After an eternity of grind you get shinnies, somehow this is supposed to make the fact you had almost no fun along the way worth doing it.
I could go back and do more dungeon runs but meh… what’s the point the only time I’ll use this gear is for what world vs. world pvp? I don’t even care much for pvp as it is.

Ah that’s why that’s everywhere, I was thinking it was some new slang to refer to something that’s weak. Like man your gameplay is just kitten.
I see we can choose to grind our eyeballs out but lets not give everyone BiS so they can just get on with the fun.
Then the geeks who wasted more time then everyone else wouldn’t have an advantage over everyone else that’s why legendry’s need to be “hard” to get aka spending more time on ones backside doing useless stuff than the next guy.
Before the “games are time sinks argument hits” of course they are, but they are meant to be fun, very little in this game so far has been actual fun especially since hitting 80. It might actually still be fun if trying to get the equipment to be on par with others didn’t feel like an absurdly long and dull process where every time someone finds a way to get a small amount of headway they “fix” the problem but again making you take yet even more time to acquire the mats/money.
O yes but if it doesn’t take grinding your eyeballs out to get its not Legendary!! Yes I forgot the Legendary equivalence is only equal to….
amount of time sitting on butt/time spent bored out of mind

So no one’s with me on the whole let’s just give everyone BiS gear solution to all this I mean you guys kept screaming at us about how were not supposed to be finding the quickest ways to farm gold and how everyone’s so concerned about the gear but you don’t want to just give everyone BiS so we can all be equal and worry about fun and pvp and such?
That and just get rid of currency, what would we need it if you just gave us all best gear and eliminated need for any consumable’s. Yes no maybe?
Just nerf all decent ways to farm gold so you can grind until your eyes bleed to feel like you’ve accomplished something meaningful? Ah ok I’ll take it that’s why you give no response to me.
So for a dagger/dagger thief your just screwed right awesome lol…
To all the people saying this is a game play it, that its not about the money ok….
Greta idea remove all currency from the game and give every player any gear they want for free. If money in a game is not important than you should be able to give everyone BiS gear for free so we can stop worrying about someone having an unfair advantage gear wise at least and proceed to simply enjoying the game.
Thank you for the great suggestion guys! Lets all be giving BiS and be done with it then we can be on to the fun!
I think you guys have been trolled.
Why do you think they nerf every good farm opportunity? It’s free to play or “endure” to use a more accurate term.
To be honest I never minded paying a subscription for a game that was fun, yes I was just wasting my time on a useless game but at least I was enjoying myself, haven’t done much of that in Guild Wars 2 yet.
@STRanger I see so if you walk outside your door tomorrow and someone blows your head off with a sniper rifle no warning or reason I should just come up and say “Omg noob don’t you know you should have worn your bulletproof helmet?!” seems like where your logic is going with this.
Why are the battlegrounds flooded with Thief’s and Warriors if they aren’t OP please stop acting like you can one shot someone simply because your a good player and all classes are equal this game has major balancing issues, I’m making a suggest if you got one so should you.
@STRanger
Not saying we should remove builds but allowing for a build that makes us basically just one-shot someone is not much fun. The person you used it on never had a chance and you know it there was no fight just an execution.
What I’m suggesting is still allow build’s and burst builds but scale the damage down so those one shot or nearly one shot kills don’t happen. You would still be able to play with a huge burst opener but then you would just have to have a plan to finish them off. While they actually can fight back.
Being able to stunlock someone to death or one shot someone isn’t really all that fun after awhile, it’s not like your opponent could have played differently to prevent the outcome it was game over for him the minute you started it and that’s the problem with these types of kills.
@Argis Then why even add racial skills? They could have just left them out and let what race you choose be a cosmetic thing only, all the rest of the stories are just lore for your character.
Doubt these changes will ever happen but want to throw them out there anyways.
Personally I do feel like the thief is still a little too powerful on burst and yes I do have an 80 thief. I do agree that we shouldn’t be able to basically one-shot or kill anyone in just a second flat because we specced right.
Having said that I think they could tone down our damage and make the class more interesting by just removing steal (only good for the shadowstep+mug anyways) and replace it with a permastealth ability.
Before you rage on me I don’t mean permastealth at all times there would be some conditions, it would work the same as our normal stealth abilities but would not break until we attacked someone. Once we land an attack this stealth ability would not be useable for lets say 90-120 seconds maybe longer even. We could still use our other stealth abilities but obviously those don’t last as long.
I think doing this along with toning down our damage somewhat would make for better gameplay our burst wouldn’t be as bad, no where near just one shotting someone but we can setup ambushes and have time to plan an attack because we don’t have to worry about our initial stealth revealing us before we strike. It could also be used for a perma-stealth escape defensively, if we survived a +2 min brawl or chose to use it for escape purposely.
Other than that I do think like others have said the initiative cost on dancing dagger should be lowered to match the reduced damage and perhaps lower the damage of it a bit more but add a stacking bleed.
Above all I think seeing a drastic change to heartstrike is needed. Perhaps add more cost to use it or make it so it only does high damage when your target is low on health or meets certain conditions which have to come from other sources the thief has to use first.
So your suggestion then is to force people to pvp because that’s what you want.
Sounds nice but unless they redesign dungeons I’m gonna dislike doing them anyways but mind as well get more tokens so sure.
I just don’t see why these things have to be so ranged attack only why can’t they be designed to let you play your class how you normally do? Why not make dungeons like super long elite group events? That way you can still play the way you did while you played the rest of the game leveling.
No instead I’m using my shortbow on everything….
Please redesign dungeons. It’s not much fun running through the whole thing just range attacking almost everything you come across, and begs to ask the question why have melee classes in the game if they never use their melee skills except in pvp and leveling?
Speaking of pvp since I’m assuming this games mostly about pvp anyways please work on balancing it asap? Right now it looks like Thieves and Warriors are dominating all other professions.
If this game really has no tank/heals/dps trinity, why then is there even a guardian profession? Also why since there are no tanks are some situations MUCH easier with a guardian to take the hits? It’s almost like he’s a tank…. because he’s better at taking the hits… and staying alive… and not dying unlike other professions. I must just be high on crack though silly me!
@ Duplicated and that would be a problem because? What then you might not have a large stack of unopened chests which you need to buy keys for off the in game store sitting in your bank?
@Serenity Not saying I want special skills here, what are in those boxes usually aren’t worth very much anyways, all thief classes in all game are mostly concerned about theirself and money not knowing lockpicking is just absurd. The only good reason we can’t is because they would rather force us to buy them off their in game store. Say I’m lieing lol please…
I honestly think our class or all rogue/thief type classes are due to hate no matter what or how weak, people will only be happy when the profession is laughable. Imo it has a lot more to do with the way in which it fights then being OP, people just don’t like it when they’re opponent fights dirty and that’s pretty much what Thief’s all about. They also act like it takes no skill to play like using stealth skills is just brainless and automatic or something eh whatever…
Question why in god’s name can’t thief’s have a skill to picklocks? If not a useable skill that can be used to also open chests for others at least a skill that allows you to open your own locked boxed. What is the good lore reason that a “Thief” by profession decided that they would learn poisons, backstabbing, camouflage/stealth abilities or tricks as you might call them, common bandit type weapon skills…. O but opening locked boxes that contain treasure? Nah why would they want to do that?
Only just started playing the game and have already seen what your talking about. Seems like it almost just a waste of time to craft or even sell mats so far on this game, then again how else is there to make money? Only 55 atm maybe things go a bit faster at 80 I dunno but I’m honestly starting to ask myself why I should stick around.
It feels like they made it hard to make gold on purpose and while they may claim its to prevent gold selling there sure are enough sites out there offering gold still, hell they sell gold off the store if you buy gems and trade them in for gold. Guess this is one of those drawbacks with free to play.
