I don’t name pets in GW2 due to the fact that I have no emotional attachment to them.
There is zero effort needed to tame a pet and there is nothing unique about any of them, as anyone can easily tame any pet with a little bit of exploration.
One of my (few) favorite memories of WoW was running through a higher level enemy zone looking for a specific pet that didn’t spawn in any of my faction’s zones. I spent an hour sneaking through all those enemy areas, trying not to aggro any higher level mobs, or be spotted by players 30 levels higher than me on my way to tame this pet. It was a rush. I used that pet for years because of it. It was cool to use a pet that everyone knew only spawned in enemy territory.
Nothing like that exists in GW2. Here’s what does exist:
1)No sense of uniqueness in pets and no rares
2)No challenge in taming a pet
3)No sense of danger in finding a pet, unless you are running through a MUCH higher zone to do so (the wolf in the Eternal Battlegrounds is the one exception I can think of here, but only when another server owns that area)
4)No need to make decisions on which pets to go for, as you can tame EVERY PET
5)Pets are broken and generally annoy me in GW2.

I have no problem completing maps and doing dynamic events at the same time. Why anyone would skip a DE they are near for any reason is beyond me.
@Leiloni (neat name)
You can still kite in Melee range and use the blinds, etc. I’m talking about the guys that think they’re still playing their warrior/guardian just standing in front of a mob while it 2 shots them. Gotta keep moving.
Oh, and one other thing; Use your Water attunement heals early. Don’t wait until you are half dead….save that for your utility heal. Low level Ele healing just sucks
Free Advice: Level with Scepter/Dagger and spec into Air. get gear with high precision and crit %. Learn to use the powerful combos that S/D has and you will be nuking things. Use that from 10-60.
At 60-80, go full earth and water. You’ll be bleeding mobs out before they even make it to you from max range.
Lastly, Kite. Always, always kite. I see too many new Ele’s just face tanking mobs and wondering why they die so much. It’s he one class that can get destroyed in 3 hits, so you always have to keep moving.

Thanks for your service to our country!
@Vzur – no, it did not give me a noticeable performance hit at all. Even if it did, I’d rather play with toned down effects than to get a headache after looking at 10 minutes of their default claustrophobic view.
@MrNobody – My point wasn’t about punishing anyone…it was a point of fact that I find PVP in general easier with a wider FOV, for obvious reasons.
I tried going back to full screen mode a couple of times and can really feel the disadvantage on tight maps…..plus a pounding kittening headache.
/edit
The only disadvantage I can see from using a widescreen windowed mode is the lack of ability to adjust in game Gama.
Another major advantage is not having to use Alt/Tab ….makes it easier to keep Netflix streaming on my other monitor that way

42 and still dig it. Anyone under the age of 28 is still a kid anyway…and their opinions simply can’t be trusted
Was the game worth $60? Absolutely. Very fun, even if it has a on of bugs and balance issues. Were the Gems I’ve purchased worth the money? Kitten no!
Like a few others have suggested, just play in windowed mode and adjust the window size to your FOV needs. I have mine windowed into a thin rectangle and probably get at least a 100 degree FOV this way. I can’t play it with their bad default setting of 65, as it gives me headaches and anxiety. Seriously, it’s almost claustrophobic.
As a side note, using the windowed mode definitely feels like a competitive advantage in s/tpvp and WvWvW, as you can see who’s coming up on your sides a LOT better.
The issue with Ele in PVP is cantrips. 3 Cantrips is almost a must, which negates some offensive power choices. Ride the lightening is just plain broken, which makes it very difficult to hit the RTL/Updraft stun that we have….which is basically a requirement to use if you actually want to hit the ONE bursty combo we have (ring/tooth/phoenix).
I think if they made Dragons tooth an instant cast ability, and fixed the very well known Ele bugs, it’d go a long way to solving the cries of “we’re under powered”, without making the top tier Ele’s into gods.
First, let me preface what I’m about to say:
I’ve been playing PVP online since 95-96 in the early days of Quake 1 (320×240 software rendered on a 14:4 dial up modem). Quake 1,2,3 Unreal Tournament, TF, TF2, WoW, etc. I’ve got 18 or so years of PVP experience to draw on when I’m figuring out how to deal with other players, the classes in use, the map, terrain, etc, etc. I may not have the fastest reflexes anymore (I’m over 40) and a lot of kids (anyone under the age of 25) can out “twitch” me a lot of times…so I use my experience and I WILL eventually outsmart you no matter what class or build I happen to be playing. Sometimes that takes a while
My initial several week dive into sPVP was on Elementalist. It took a while to learn how to play it well and was/is an incredible amount of work to play well on. I enjoy the challenge of it, as it’s leagues more difficult to do well on than any other class I’ve tried. Learning to stay alive on the class was as much of a challenge as how to kill someone with it. It was fun. Other classes where much, much easier to master, but there was one class I hadn’t tried out yet…..the mesmer.
I tried Mesmer for the 1st time last week in sPvP. I used staff and sword/pistol, as I’d read that was a good combination to use. I specifically didn’t read up on any play styles or combos. I went into 10 or so matches and was just laughing at how simple it was to destroy people with it. Yes, it was hotjoin matches and no, I didn’t expect the competition to be great, but that didn’t make it any less hilarious to me at the ease of which I dominated. I was just button mashing what ever was off cool down. After a few games, I’d learned when to use what ability and it became even easier. Then I put MOA on my skill bar and it became even easier. There was a stretch of 4 games where I didn’t die a single time and lead the leader boards. It was silly and fun….but mostly silly ….how easy it was.
I now see no reason to play any other class in sPVP.
“Hey we see you’re spamming the only spammable ability in your weapon line, So we’re going to nerf the damage of that ability in hopes that you spam something else”
….only you can’t spam something else….unless you swap to a weapon set that does even less DPS. Actually, I’m killing things faster with sword/dagger than with SB now.
No one even runs Ranger in tPVP because so many other classes fill the role much better…yet, they need to make the Ranger worse off by wrecking SB. :/
Time to dust off the Warrior.
Downed state is ok. But in sPvP all professions need to have the same Skill Set

really… elementalist… ELEMENTALIST… they have the worst downstate E V E R… you could have picked like mesmer or thief
^^^THIS^^^
Ele not only has the worst underwater skills for dmg in the game, but the worst downed state, bar none. OP is just…….wrong
That’s pretty fantastic and right on the money
I too noticed that I would get a random “Obstructed” message when firing…until I realized I was pumping arrows into the backside of my pet. The problem was that I simply wasn’t paying enough attention to what I was doing. To be fair, I was distracted by the fact that the sky was falling.
A thread about funniest pet names you’ve seen leads to a bunch of posts about what people named their own pets….
OK, I’ll play. Funniest name I’ve seen someone use was Stinkfoot (drake). It caught me a hillarious
Wow OP…just…wow.
Go play an Elementalist for a week in sPVP, then go back to your Ranger and see what playing with training wheels feel like.
Maybe you can give some ranger tips against thieves instead of saying L2P?
OK. Here’s the best tip ever. Roll an Elementalist. Play that for a few days and learn how to see enemy tells, dodge, use terrain for advantage, when to CC and stun break and when to run away. If you can do all that and stay alive fairly well (good luck), then go back to your Ranger with a short bow for a few matches. You will come back to these forums and delete your QQ.
Seriously, Ranger and shortbow is so easy I would make it my main. There’s just not enough challenge in it. If you play defensively, evade when needed, trap when needed, etc, the Ranger shortbow autoattack will win just about every time against just about any class.
Here’s the way to make crafting useful:
Save all the mats you get leveling your main. Make an Alt. Level crafting with the mats that you found, gain free XP levels for the alt. Stop crafting when until you have more mats from leveling the alt. Rinse/repeat. It’s a tool for leveling..nothing more.
@jwburks – Have you actually looked at the food prices? It’s one of the most expensive crafts to level and you lose the most amount doing it. They may get depleted, but not nearly fast enough for them to be worth anything.
At least cooking is something that is useful to every character. Out of all the crafting things, cooking is the most expensive, but gets the best benefit from actually getting used in leveling (also, magic find food …yay )
Will you make gold off of it? Nope, but that 10% exp per kill sure adds up. You can also get a lot of easy levels on your toon from discovering the tons of recipes there are as well.
Face it, the naga razer is the only thing that makes this class bareable

Using the default WSAD settings is just silly. It always cracks me up that WSAD somehow became the defacto model (thanks Quake!) It effectively eliminates the use of 60% of the keyboard unless you have very long fingers, or use 2 hands.
A much better method is to rebind to UJHK or some other combination in the MIDDLE of the keyboard (I use UJYI personally and rebound 1,2,3,4 to mouse 4, H,K F) . From there, you can easily reach all keys (no alt/shift needed). That said, the more buttons on your mouse, the better.
