permanent vigor partly responsible why full zerker for everything is so viable.
i really really like the idea of precise strike/remorselessness change, though 1:1 would be OP because you could virtually have perma 25% crit chance. I think something like for every 5 stacks of vuln = 1% crit would be more fair, but numbers are always changeable. Either way, really like this idea the most.
Also, to contribute
Predator’s Instinct: when your opponent is hit below 25% health, regain opening strike.
Basically the current remorselessness but more useful. :P
Anyway, great read. Looking forward to your other ones. Take notes anet
The same reason why mesmers aren’t able to weild MH pistols. Probably saving it for an expansion of some sort.
I’d love a martial staff, but most sta kitten are too ornate. Can’t really imagine a ranger smacking something with a bifrost. I could settle for it as a caster weapon though. I would rather have an unconventional weapon like a caster staff than another long ranged weapon like the Rifle imho. Unless they can make the rifle feel unique and different from the SB and LB.
I gave 50s because I tried for the longest time to do skipping stones, and was just so happy that someone was there to do it for me. For any other port I usually say thanks, and give a siege plan if EB JP.
No.
Ascended gear takes way too long to get. I can only imagine how long a complete armor set could take. For how much time investment it requires, every armor piece would feel like it “locks” me more and more into a specific build because of the power creep, especially with the terrible agony mechanic (AR shouldn’t even exist. It is a lousy way to create gear checks and artificial difficulty, and is the reason I don’t bother with FoTM). For this reason, I will never use ascended gear.
IMHO ascended items should’ve never been about better stats, but should’ve been about infusion slots (that is, exotic gear + infusion slots + socket/runes). Infusion slots shouldn’t offer any in-combat advantage, and should’ve been purely fun/convenience. For example, +MF, +GF, +Out of Combat movement speed, +No Repair costs, +cosmetic effects, etc.
But really, I don’t care as long as it doesn’t keep me from experiencing parts of the game, or bar me from PvE progression like FoTM does.
Temporal curtain/into the void is fine. Except for pulling targets off of walls that aren’t within LOS. That’s BS.
1. Up the speed of #1 attack another 10-15%. (Or return the clone to cast confusion like in beta)
2. Have Illusionary Counter (block) generate 2 clones.
3. Speed up the “windup” of the Confusing Images. If anything get 1&2 done and we can talk again after.
These are great suggestions. It’s funny how scepter ended up being in the “clone factory” niche when scepter 1 is the slowest and least reliable ways to generate clones. The cycle for scepter 1 imo should be 1.5 seconds, not 2. I would also like the first two attacks put 1 stack of 2s confusion on your target to become the proper confusion weapon like it should’ve been. I really don’t think this is asking too much considering how weak confusion is in PvP/WvW now.
I like your#2, but I think it might be too powerful because the block already does very respectable damage. I’d like to have it as it’s own trait, though, or more preferably merged with retaliatory shield.
I guess it’s a lot easier to completely destroy builds instead of putting in the effort to balance them. I really don’t understand the thought process between half the nerfs they do…
Retaliation can only be stacked up to 5 times, so the most you’re getting out this combo is 15seconds before boon duration. You get 5s of retaliation from one light + leap combo, and you only need 3 to beat Mimic + Retaliatory Shield which leaves 2 slots open for more retaliation. Even better, a simple combo from sword+focus (Temporal Curtain -> Illusionary Leap -> Swap) already gives you those 3 stacks.
So while Mimic + RS may have effective synergy, let’s not get carried away here :p
You have no idea what you’re talking about. With this combo, you will get 3 seconds of retaliation per blocked hit up to the cap of 30ish seconds.
How is s/he wrong? The wiki says the duration for retaliation stacks only 5 times and nothing about a 30 second cap. At most, you could get 6 stacks (18 sec) of retaliation from mimic+RS because 1 stack will expire before mimic ends (at 0% boon duration). Unless you know something that’s not on the wiki.
Awful. Just awful. By nerfing confusion they destroyed the only real counter to the Zerg balls ruining WvW and weakened our class by a ton.
This. so much. Every patch it seems like they want us to be giant zergs more and more. I very VERY rarely die from confusion in WvW, and I sometimes choose to forgo condition cleanse when I’m in a zerg. When I see a large stack on me, I just run back into the zerg for 8 seconds and wait for it to drop. I run around glamours, and if I’m in one, i try my best to stay in it. It’s not that hard -_-. If anything the 33% confusion duration needed to be nerfed
Mesmers aren’t easy to play and they aren’t OP, they are by far the hardest to play class.
Hardly. They’re pretty easy to play, actually. Easiest? Definitely not. Hardest? Not without a stretch. High skill cap != hard to play. There’s a lot of ins-and-outs with mesmers (as with every profession), but that doesn’t make them harder to play because they’re still very effective 1v1 and group settings without knowing these tips and tricks.
the amount of AOE condition removal that’s in the current meta is insane. If you run with the massive zerg blob, chances are that your friendly neighborhood guardians have removed more conditions off yourself than you would on your own by the end of the night… hah. But seriously, the only complaint I could understand is confusion ticking on dodge rolls.
Not a utility skill, I know, but staff has 4 traits spread across 3 trees.
Spiteful Marks (Spite)
Greater Marks (DM)
Staff Mastery (DM)
Soul Marks (SR)Necro trait tree is an absolute joke. Most of these traits could be merged and replaced with more interesting ones. Which probably won’t happen until a major patch like an expansion, unfortunately. Even then, I’m doubtful whether they’ll be fixed.
This is the perfect example of why a seemingly unnecessary dispersion of similar traits makes absolute sense. It’s because they serve different purposes.
1. Greater Marks and Staff Mastery are in the same line anyway, and that makes sense.
2. Soul Marks does not improve your staff skills per se but your life force gain. And many builds that heavily implement death shroud in their playstyle use the staff anyway. Therefore it has to be in the Soul Reaping line.
3. Spiteful marks, more damage ->Spite, nuf said.
I’m not sure if anyone ever uses that one though. Conditionmancers certainly don’t need a 10% increase to the relatively low and unfrequent damage of the marks and power builds usually have better alternatives (maybe this should be an adept trait?).On the other hand, let me ask you this: Would you rather have all of those 4 traits in the same line? Or all of the minion traits in the same? No, because if you want more than 3 then they need to be in different lines.
My complaint isn’t the fact that they’re spread out; I actually agree that it helps give more build options. My complaint is that it’s just bloat. All four traits could be reduced to 2, and it would allow for more build diversity. Necro’s need some consildation to allow more room for interesting trait choices. Like, seriously, 9 minion traits is out of control… and i can’t even get a kitten vigor trait!
Trait trees are plagued with boring traits that really don’t offer much in terms of game play other than just very one-dimensional dps boosts. See Omega’s post. It isn’t a problem unique to necro obviously, but necros do seem the worst offenders.
Not a utility skill, I know, but staff has 4 traits spread across 3 trees.

Necro trait tree is an absolute joke. Most of these traits could be merged and replaced with more interesting ones. Which probably won’t happen until a major patch like an expansion, unfortunately. Even then, I’m doubtful whether they’ll be fixed.
coming from playing a necro to checking out the mesmer forums… im confident my necro can ‘out condition’ your mesmer. unless of course your mesmer can apply and maintain 17-25 stack of bleeds and baring in mind I can turn ur conditions against you (multiple times)
Mesmer Trident decimates Necro trident any condition build. It’d been a while since I had played mesmer, so I didn’t realize that they changed the trident to stack bleeds instead of confusion, but my jaw literally dropped when I saw I was hitting 20-25 bleed stack almost instantly after mirror images + trident 3 with illusionary elasticity + sharper images.
Ya, I know, “that’s underwater combat, who cares,” but it’s still pretty impressive :P
i completely agree OP. I want to like the necro so bad, but I just can’t. It was so awesome in gw1… I just don’t understand how they could muck it up so bad?! I keep hoping for a big balance patch to make sweeping changes to the class, but I know that won’t come this year. At the earliest, when the expansion is released. :\
(edited by station.6421)
I know it wasn’t much again, but the DS change totally got me by surprised. They sure made a lot of tweaks to engineers, huh?
a dev stated that this patch will largely focus on engi changes. Since necro is the 2nd least played profession, one can hope that it’s up next for a big patch change.
-Dark Path: The problem wasn’t hitting blocking targets; the problem is skill actually landing on them… useless change until this gets addressed
-Epidemic – saw a nerf coming. I guess it could’ve been worse.
-Spiteful talisman: still no fix to the range/cd bug? really? Hasn’t this bug been here since release?
-death shroud: FINALLY
-Lifesteal on walls: i’m 99% sure that vampiric already hit walls…??
Another disappointing patch. Hopefully necro is up next for big patch changes….

Personally, I think some good necro daggers are:
Corrupted Shard
Dagger of the deep
Malefacterym
Pirate Bloodletter
Soulshard
I currently use soulshard. Feels like a ceremonial knife of sorts. I use corrupted skeggox for my axe and really like it; has a great necro feel to it, but it costs 30-40g.
Size of greater marks should be default. Making them unblockable on the other hand could be left as a trait. Frankly I do agree that original mark size is just pathetic.
This. The default mark size should be increased at least partially, because as it is now, Greater Marks makes too much of a difference and is, for a 10pt-trait, way too important/powerful.
Staff should be somewhat usable without the trait (like every weapon/skill should).Default radius of 180 should be the minimum.
Exactly this. The current default staff mark size is ridiculously small. It shouldn’t be the size of greater marks but it should be at least double what it is now to make Greater Marks not 100% mandatory. I run a build D/W + Staff that has to be 30/20/0/20, tried it every other possible way to incorporate Greater Marks and it’s just not as good. I shouldn’t feel like I HAVE to have 10 pts into Death Magic for any build utilizing Staff. If they were even double in size by default and GM made them the current Well size plus unblockable, it would be helpful in freeing up people to not be forced into 10 mandatory points.
This. Plus, there’s FOUR staff related traits in THREE different trees. FOUR. Talk about bloat. Mark of Evasion is kind of in that gray area (which could be a fifth trait).
Greater marks radius should be baseline, the unblockable aspect of it should be combined with spiteful marks (10% more damage). Soul Marks (3% LF) and staff mastery should be combined. The pairings would make sense because it offers synergy between the two.
Unless you are very lucky I would imagine it being cheaper to just buy a precursor off TP
And that is really a shame. When your character does finally earn their legendary weapon (if ever) it should have been earned by the character, not bought off the TP.
That just kills the experience of your character having a legendary.
Oh look, I have a legendary, yeah, I bought it. Blah.
That’s pretty much the way I feel about it. I’m not all that bothered that others do it, or how hard they are to get. I just don’t want to buy it, I want to get it myself.
Gift of Mastery was done right. I actually enjoyed working towards that. Hell, even mystic clovers weren’t that bad. The rest is awfully boring and uninspired.
I agree with the sentiment that there’s nothing legendary about them. i don’t see people with legendaries and think, “wow, that must be a good player” like I would in olden-time MMOs. It’s just kind of ehh, nothing really impressive other than extreme patience.
my legendary hunt was ruining gw2 for me. I was going for the juggernaut, but I gave up because saving up for the precursor and rest of the t6 mats was so ridiculous and daunting, especially with how much DR is in this game. Farming COF and cursed shore for the next couple of months was not how I wanted to play the game.
I had gift of quick silver and metal mats farmed (no recipe)
about 75 of each t6 mat
77 clovers
80 ectos
gift of mastery
and I decided to sell it all. Ended up buying 2 new sets of exotic gear to play with, exotic jewelry, some t3 cultural armor, got corrupted sledgehammer instead, and now I’ve put the rest to crafting foefire. No regrets.

Almost every boon for 20 sec on 28 sec effective CD
Someone seems to be exaggerating a bit…If you are speaking of SY! it’s on a 48s cd (traited) and gives boons for 16s with 60% boon duration without food. If anything needs to be changed it’s this one skill as boon hate will really hurt all guardians who are not using it.
Except I’m not exaggerating. If giver’s/snowflake gear eta: and superior rune of sacntuary wasn’t bugged, it’s entirely possible to get 100% boon duration with food, which gives every boon on SY! a 20 second duration. After the boons expire, that only leaves SY! with a 28 second wait time till you can use it again. Which happens a lot, as boons aren’t stripped very often. But you’re right in that my math is wrong, as the current healway doesn’t use giver’s, so it’d be 18 duration/30 second cd.

+1. Necro is lacking in groups. They offer very poor group utility compared to guardian or mesmers. Things might have been a little different if Well of Blood was still a water field, don’t understand why they changed it to light field instead. As of right now, the only useful thing I feel like I can bring to my group is condition manipulation/transfer (which is situational and guardian/mes do better), weakness, (which is only kind of helpful for trash), and a res signet.
I think boon hate is a bad idea because it introduces the following two scenarios to the game:
- My ally places 1+ boons on me. I’m mad at my ally because he/she is now causing me to take more damage from my foe(s).
- My ally removes 1+ boons from my foe(s). I’m mad at my ally because he/she is now causing me to do less damage to my foe(s).
You applying boons to allies and removing boons from foes should not be negatives for you and/or your allies.
How ridiculous would it be to be in World vs World, Structured PvP, or even PvE and people are yelling at their allies to stop applying/removing boons because it’s hurting them?
“Mesmers and Necros, stop removing enemy boons!”
“Warriors & Guardians, don’t use your shouts!”
“Elementalists! Don’t take Elemental Attunement or stop swapping attunements!”It’s silly.
Your hypothetical is unrealistic as well as a hyperbole. People are acting like boon hate skills will be the next Mug+Backstab spike meta.

What would be the role of AH guardians now? Kinda pointless if the extra healing is simply cancelled out by the extra damage dealt by boot hate.
The extra healing from AH will almost always outpace any form of boon hate. Hammer, shouts, empowering might, vigor will be up faster than the cd on your opponents boon hate skill. Unless you’re getting focused by a lot of people. Then you’ll die, as you should. AH isn’t and shouldn’t be a god mode spec.
Hey guys! I’ve been using this build for a while now and feel really strong with it. Although I am able to face tanking a group of invaders, I feel like I am still not using this build to it’s fullest potential. I find that I am mostly using my greatsword and not switching over to my sword/focus enough.
So my question is, what is the typical thought process when going into a fight? Why and when do I swap out of greatsword? From my experience, the greatsword does much more DPS than the sword. So is there a reason to swap if I don’t need the extra endurance and blocks?
Also, what are your thoughts about shield vs focus. I’ve been running around with a shield and find that I’m liking it more as I rarely have to use my focus moves. A combo that I’ve been doing is shield 5 to knock my enemy back, and then sword 2 to blink at them while they’re on the ground. Works pretty well.
Sword 1 actually out dps the GS on a single target iirc. You just have to land all 3 hits of the last chain. Sword 3 is dps loss and should only be used in certain situations. 2 is invaluable when trying to keep up with the enemy. I use sword for pressure (when i know all 3 can hit), and then use gs for burst and cc.
Focus is superior to shield in solo play by far. 5 blocks can be game changing, and the sword 2 blind and focus 4 blind can really help in a pinch.
Personally BOON HATE is a terrible idea. Not only is it going to basically get rid of competitive play in WvW (where boon spiking happens all the time), but destroy the Guardian. I really enjoy the Guardian compared to the Engineer. Now both those professions are going to be ruined. About 70% of all Engineers run a HGH build which is stacking might……….guess they are going to go extinct if they implement that.
Boon hate is a great idea and is needed. Boon meta is out of control and needs something to keep it in check. Ever see the healway build on this board? Almost every boon for 20 sec on 28 sec effective CD, and it kills people through perma retaliation. Not to mention all the condi->boons you get from PoV. Guardian is a boon kitten right now.
Null field is arguably the most powerful boon hate skill in the game, and no one is complaining about how it’s ruining competitive WvW. Well of corruption is essentially the same thing. Again, no complaints.
Boon hate already exists with the mesmer and necro and the guardian is still functioning fine as a top tier profession. And no, 2 professions are not enough to keep boons in-line. Granted, these new skills need to be balanced, but Anet has shown that it is possible (look at necro focus 5 for a good boon hate skill).
Stop being so melodramatic.

This such a useless trait. It has ~horrible~ scaling… .and this is after it was buffed.
Please someone correct me, but at 80 in exotics + ascended at about 3300 Armor… 70 Toughness is about 1.2% damage reduction?
This needs to be scalled up to at least 5%: personally, 10% would make it worthwile over the other traits: Meditation, Purity, Retributive…
Strength in Numbers is relative to who is receiving it. It’s terrible when you have 3300 armor, but it’s not too bad when you only have 2200. Suggesting that guardians should have access to a constant 5-10% aoe damage reduction, on top of the amount of AOE protection, and on top of 3300 armor is not realistic. That’s way too strong for a passive trait.
I doubt it’ll be that bad. Necro’s buffed focus 5 (Spinal Shivers) is an example of balanced “boon hate” skill. Given that it’s a thief, it’ll probably only one boon at a time at the cost of initiative. As long as it’s not heart seeker, it can work out.
(edited by station.6421)
Lack of coherency of design is calling a profession “the attrition profession” and giving the only unique condition to the mesmer. Terror trait is a step in the right direction, but with only 2 sources of fear, it’s hardly worth comparing.
I would leave LA if they added MFs to all major cities and a linked global/trade channel for the cities. Which is a shame, because I’d rather be in the grove.
honestly, after the last “major balance patch,” I’m taking this one with a handful of salt. I’m not expecting much at all, mostly addressing things that no one will find important.
Hopefully i’m wrong
wouldn’t be surprised to see well of suffering be nerfed. Honestly, any AOE nerfs will probably be the last nail in the coffin for my necro unless they get some serious buffs in other places.
400 hours. Only received ~lvl 70 exotics from map completion. Never received a world drop exotic. Get rares often, though.
Honestly, i don’t mind the concept of reanimator at all. What bothers me is that it’s so weak. What I’d like to see is:
-remove the CD, cap it at 5 minions (would give them double use as an AOE sponge for groups)
-move it to grandmaster minor or major trait in death magic, preferably major (and replace Dark Armor (I) as the Adept Minor trait.)
-Increase the durability of them slightly, reduce decay
-and for the big one… wait for it… Improve minion AI :P
-bonus: have it spawn off of our minions that die? Pretty please? haha
It’d really make the trait fun IMO as well as optional. It will give fans the old GW1 necro feel with having a little minion army.
I have a love-hate relationship with MH dagger.
Love the damage
Hate that 1 is the only thing effective to use
Kind of boring to just spam 1. But using it with Well of suffering and corruption makes up for it somewhat. Would like to see 2 at least not be a dps loss when you use it, otherwise it’ll remain situational.
bumping. I just got this bug, and it REALLY bothers me. I submitted a bug report online, but god knows if it will even be looked at. It happened to me after I summoned my flesh wurm and switched out the skill to WoC with necrotic traversal up.
Really hope it’s an easy, quick fix. Necrotic travel is a pretty ugly icon.
I’ve actually found D2 2 is a good gap closer when I’m rockin’ my dagger/focus. A quick and dirty way to get into combat. The bonus being you don’t have to wait for the projectile to hit to drop out of DS.
except for when it doesn’t hit which is quite often
Bump.
But to add. If they don’t intend to change ax, they could change 1 trait Unyielding Blast. Change it so that instead of piercing (already have staff and the staff projectile is a lot fatter in terms of aoe), it would bounce.
Agreed, except I’d like to see it do splash damage like Ele fire staff 1. Either or, anything is better than having to line it up to pierce. It’s such a pain in the kitten !
1) I’ll double tap into DS for the in and out DS traits, mostly for fury or enfeebling blood. Would like to use the heal, but it’s too low atm. Only do this when I know I won’t need it for an oh kitten moment (trash)
2) I’m trying to use unyielding blast to maximize AOE dps. I’m finding it very difficult to hit more than one target with it and will probably change it out for path of midnight.
3) Also use dark path as an opener/gap closer as a dagger/power necro. Pretty useful at closing gaps, and I love me some chill ^^
4) I’ll use it to stack might and vulnerability on a mob before engaging with BiP and daggers/well of suffering
5) Eat damage when running away from a zerg in WvW. Works most of the times
i love gw 2 but i miss the shear number of skills from gw1. oh the possibilities
This. This so much. You could spend days picking out a unique build. GW2 is so shallow compared to what GW was.
That said, GW2 is a great game, otherwise I wouldn’t’ve spent 400+ hours and counting on it. Build variety and enjoyable grind (yeah, that’s right. GW2 grind is miserable and unrewarding) are what I really miss from GW.
Also, the cashgrabs really suck. It’s funny cause I’d probably spend a lot on their shops if they were so unbelievably expensive. Almost $6 for 5 keys? What the kitten are you smoking? So I can get a kittenty tonic, useless booster, and have 0.0005% chance to gets something worthwhile? Such steep prices stink of greed.
Don’t feel to bad.
Burning has good +conddmg coefficient, but otherwise is way less awesome than most other conditions you have access to as a necro. The biggest problem with burning is that it stacks duration instead of intensity. For a pure damage condition, it’s really not awesome to overstack burning and lose a lot of damage. It’s less of a problem for poison and chilled because those have secondary beneficial effects.
Pretty much this. Burn is great for solo play, but just okay for group play. If you have a guardian or any profession that can lay down fire fields, that’s pretty much all you’ll need. Wouldn’t be surprised to see necro get the torch in a future expansion, though.
It is strange that although the direct damage of Necromancers is low (possible the lowest in the game of the 6 professions)…l.
I wouldn’t say necros deal the lowest as much as necros are the most limited in ways to deal direct damage. Dagger auto attack, with the right spec, can deal 4-5k damage in one cycle. Axe 2 can also deal about 5-7k damage full channel. Well of suffering can do about 1-2k per tick; corruption ~750. But that’s pretty much it. Like I said, it’s very limited in terms of options. Life blast can deal about 3.5k per, but it’s a shame that it has a 1 sec cast time. Hopefully the axe will be buffed soon though.
If you have even the slightest desire to go MM, go ahead and level up as one. Cause you won’t be playing MM once you hit 80.
Reality check!
I throw down 3 seconds of area protection on 48seconds cooldown
I throw down area regeneration, and haven’t noticed that it’s not significant healing.
I fear what needs to be feared, except what actually needs to be feared, given the recent fear nerf, which I apparently didn’t notice.Ways I’ve found to support:
Condition Cleanse w/ Plague Signet + warhorn 4 and staff 4. guess you didn’t notice the daze nerf, eh?
Weakness spam, which is worthless in every instance where you’re in danger of actually needing it, like against other players or bosses
Blind spam Same as above, except against players, who will instead dodge back and murder you from range. Oops.
Chill semi-spam Very, verrry VERY semi.
Well Builds w/ protection all 3 seconds of itI think the necro is pretty great at support… people don’t understand their profession very well.
I agree. Some don’t understand their profession very well at all.
I was only talking about PVE. You can say what you want, but the above has worked very well for me and has made a huge difference in fights. Sorry, I don’t know what you’re doing wrong. I know other professions (ele and guardian) outshine in support, but this isn’t unique to necro. Rather it’s b/c ele and guardians are currently in a very strong place right now.
I find targeting asuras to be the biggest pain when they’re MM necros or mesmers. Every other profession is easy to target imho
I’m with you. I think the necro is pretty great at support. I think part of the flak it gets is because it’s not very obvious in how it supports. The other part is people don’t understand their profession very well.
Ways I’ve found to support:
Condition Cleanse w/ Plague Signet + eta: meant dagger 4 and staff 4.
Weakness spam (really underrated condition… CPC needs more lovin’)
Blind spam
Chill semi-spam
Well Builds w/ protection
My one complaint is that the Well traits are all so spread out and in bad places. I’d like it if Focused Rituals and Well Mastery were combined so they weren’t all so spread out.
(edited by station.6421)
^ Thanks for posting those charts. Necros with a whole five combo finishers! Haha.
It’d also be neat if dark path (and spectral grasp?) was a Leap finisher too.
And hopefully in the future we’ll get an ice field too It would be a perfect home for a necro!
