I’m new play a lvl 32 ranger, here are my experiences so far.
1. no your not dependent on your pet but they are great to have and add some great additions to helping you in the means of dps, buffs, tank, or aoe’s depending on the pet.
What I did straight away was get all the pets that I thought would be most beneficial. So I traveled around from one zone to another to tame those pets. This is great for finding those pets you want and the Guild wars wiki will give you extra info on their exact location and the their stats.
this map will show you where the pets are! http://www.guildhead.com/map#z:5;c:-1.142578125,9.7119140625
2. with ranger its not just about you or just your pet, its about both of you. Balancing your dps with your pet will help your overall survivability. Kiting isn’t always going to work as you move slower going backwards and you’ll usually run into another mob if you aren’t careful. Longbow has a nice knockback to help with this and your dmg is great from a further distance. Shortbow is greater for kiting cause its quick and you have an ability to jump back away from your target.
3. Choose your pet wisely. You don’t have to micromanage but the type of pet is very situational. IE… tank > bear/carrion or dps>feline. No the bear has high vitality and the carrion has high toughness so choose what works best for you in that respect.
4. Traits help both you and your pet so try some things till you find what works best for your playstyle.
I started with nature magic and marksman but found my pet died easily and my dps wasn’t as great as I wanted it to be. I quickly learned that balancing your power and precision at about a 2:1 ratio makes for some sickly dps. then with beastmaster skills it allows your pet to stay alive much longer making less for you to worry about. The great thing about this setup is you can sit there afk and something might attack you and your pet will just kill it. Many times I don’t even have to do anything and just let my pet kill my target. Its nice when your not fully paying attention to the game. Now add in your dps and your pets and your talking quick kills.
this is my aim right now for traits. Firstly I went for the beastmaster skills because the added stats for your pet with masters bond is amazing. Its like your pet is leveling everytime you kill something. Then work on skirmishing because your pet will be critting alot and later those crits will heal your pet when you get carnivorous appetite.

5. ok sorry for the long topic there on pets. So your other concern was melee. Greatsword is great and fun and I haven’t had any problems with it or with sword/warhorn/torch. I usually swap to warhorn for the buff and birds then quickly back to torch for a little range and aoe. Your dmg is pretty awesome with traps as well. I can stow my pet, drop three traps in a second and then a bonfire from the torch and not even swing my sword once and target is dead! 1h sword is nice cause your leaping and evading and circling your target add this with the simple ability everyone has to double tap to evade and you have some nice evasion skills to work with. If you like to melee try it and when it gets hairy swap to your bow and kite! The most you have to worry about with your pet is healing and using the one skill they have but alot of the time you don’t even need to bother, just let them run in a start hackin and slashing away while you do your thing.
Just remember, you can melee well but your not a tank, you wear leather… but add in your pet and you’re looking at one awesome time.
Another note, longbow is good for big mobs. not much else in my opinion. Shortbow and sword/torch combos are great for pve/pvp.
Please give it a try. up to level 15 it was a little tricky cause I was new to the class and almost dropped it but man once you get the hang of it you’re in for a hellava ride.
Good to know, i’ll slowly start increasing my power from here on out and not the changes I see.
@snowybell if you could please elaborate as to why power would take precedence over precision later on in the game that would be greatly appreciated. Blatantly saying do this later doesn’t tell me why I something may be important.
As an added note and bump: Trying to keep me and my pet balanced so my neither of us is out damaging the other. Its tough to do but it keeps me and my pet alive this way without sacrificing dps. I feel it’s a great balance and I can’t wait to see how it fairs in pvp.
just tried again and its back up now!
Just got disconnected and it said my password was invalid…umm I was already logged in and playing wtf? anyways can’t log it now Error Code: 42:0:900:1:3928
Edit: Since I got zero responses I’m changing this to more of a progress report for others to follow as I level.
Well for starters I’m new, only been playing about a week now. Tried a few other professions and i’m liking Ranger. Just hit lvl 21 and have been questioning my choices the whole way through. I’ve focused primarily on Power, then vitality, then toughness which isn’t much I should add.
I feel a bit squishy
Attribues:
Power 132+129 = 261
Precision 132+13 = 145 (do I want to crit more with a ranger)
Toughness 132+16 = 148
Vitality 132+58 = 190
Attack 529
Crit chance 8%
armor 347
health 2332
all green gear
CHANGES:
Primarily switched to focus on Precision and crit %
Attributes are now:
Power 201
Precision 421 (far more dps than high power)
Toughness 180
Vitality 180
Attack 483
Crit Chance 59%
armor 410
health 2,502
Gear is now using all masterwork with minor rune of the eagle, lyssa, and ranger. These are faily cheap on the Auction house. Bows are now using precision with % critical damage modifiers and upgrades for critical chance. For those that may not know you can replace the old upgrades with new ones. I either salvage from gear or buy them from the Auction House. Pretty cheap and easy to do. Eventually I’ll want to get my crit chance up to 100% as I hear the dmg is pretty amazing.
Currently my pet, using the Jungle stalker because of the high crit it already has. Also a key trait i’ve taken is skirmishing 10 for the increase in precision and crit % and Beastmastering 10 for +100 healing and increase to pet attributes as well as Masters bond which increases your pets stats every time you kill a foe. This greatly increases your pets stats and with a dps pet it will make your toughness stat better than what you’d have with a bear but not quite as good of vitality since the bear has primarily high vitality as it is. I also use signet of the wild for the extra regen for me and my pet. Since these changes the kills have been quick and my pet hasn’t died and I have been killing foes +5 levels above mine with ease.
The signets help as well but i’ll switch them up with the traps for larger mobs.
Still unsure as to which is better, longbow or shortbow. melee is kind more for fun for me.
Carnivorious appetite is pretty important for pet survival as well but at my level I don’t have it yet.
This is where my build is headed http://www.guildhead.com/skill-calc#MVom0Vc0ohGmoohngo0Ga0fzk0M
Any and all constructive criticism is appreciated. I’m no expert, i’m learning this as I go.
