It’s been well over a year since I played that other game, and people in my office are thinking about doing a lan party next weekend using the free trial. So I fugured ‘what the heck’ and got it all set up. Was kinda fun re-learning the addons I used and how I had it set up. The new zone is kinda cool. But holy crap, I can’t play that game any more. Did you know you pretty much have to stand still and let the mobs beat on you while you fight?! The cartoon graphics are just inferior. And the hand-holding via quest chains is really restrictive.

GW2 is less than a year old, and already has more to do that that game after 2 years. I actually do think ANet will put in some better max-level content. Notice I didn’t say “endgame”. That is just an inappropriate label for GW2. End game starts at level 1 here.

An honest question

I have to say, my thoughts on gear treadmill’s has evolved some. I still do not want to see one in GW2 for everyone, but I am beginning to wonder if it might be okay if one existed via the Ascended line of gear. When it comes right down to it, I do not like gear grinds. I will not participate in it. But I want to experience as much of the game as I can. So, with that said, I don’t see why they couldn’t make the Fractal thing the GW2 treadmill. If I never do Fractal’s (and I don’t) and I am still able to do everything else in the game at the same effectiveness as I do now (PvE, dungeons, WvW, special events), why would I care if there is a whole other set of gear for people who like the Fractal stuff?

As long as that stuff does not in any way give those who own that gear any effective advantage over me in any other part of the game.

It could actually be a good thing in that ANet would be able to cater to a HUGE playerbase from that other game if they could introduce the kind of treadmill they like so much. And I would certainly find myself dipping my tow in that pool once in a while. And those who did the new treadmill would certainly spend quite a bit of time in my non-treadmill world. It’s win win as long as ANet does not allow their efforts to improve the whole game to suffer by devoting too much time or resources to the treadmill side of things.

…or don’t want to create another character and level them to 80…

I didn’t technically even have to read any further.

You don’t create a character to level them to 80!!!!!*

At least, in this game your goal shouldn’t always and by default be to get to 80. That’s the whole point on not really having an end-game. I mean, we DO have one, it’s just not like that other game’s. You make a new character because you want to have fun playing that race and class.

The quoted statement actually encapsulates the whole issue with grindy games that don’t really start until max level. GW2 starts at level 1, and you can feasibly play without ever reaching max level and still have a LOT more fun that you can in that other game at sub-max level.

I like that I can mine anything, but really, I don’t see a need to mine anything other than Mithril or Ori at this point. If they had put this out at launch……

I am still debating it. I like giving ANet money, but so much stuff is overpriced, I have to pick carefully. If it stayed account bound I think it would be a no-brainer since I could use it on leveling alts or when I switch my main.

The Molten Alliance pick is a new item in the BLT that is basically an infinite use Orichalcum pick, but it costs 800 gems. I thought that was pretty high and did some math to figure out how long it would take to make that purchase worthwhile, here’s what I found:
Currently it costs over 24g to buy 800 gems. The description of the pick says it’s the same as an orichalcum pick, which sell for 4s. Therefore you could buy at least 600 orichalcum picks for the same price, and at 100 uses each that comes to 60,000 uses. So extrapolating further, if you only mined for your daily, you would need to mine 7 nodes a day [7 nodes X 3 uses per node=21 uses per day] and your MA pick would be profitable in 2857 days, or 7.8 years, if you don’t mine more than that each day.
Im just using estimates here and the cost of gems fluctuates so this isn’t exact, but gives a good idea of whether or not you want to buy one of these new items.
Edit: I was just curious on the math, I am neither condoning nor condemning the item, just looking at the numbers.

We need an in-game guild forum!

That could actually be a pretty useful way of encouraging people to apply. Most people I talk to hate to look for guilds because you have to register, maybe even wait for a confirmation email, then finally fill out the form. And all to potentially join a guild. And it would be great to have an in-game calendar to organize events.

What if I have fraps of one of them appearing and disappearing pretty incriminatingly?
