I think quickness stacking illustrates the need to split skill balance among game modes. Much like with stability, boons in these large WvW groups end up “playing out” quite differently than they would in PvE and PvP. When stability was changed to stacks that could be stripped instantly, melee in WvW groups suffered immensely as elementalists and necros blindly spammed CC. The resulting “pirate ship” meta made melee roles very boring and ineffective as they had little recourse for incessant cc. Now that there is an ICD in place (thanks to developer attention to WvW), melee are able to more or less push with their groups.

With quickness stacking in WvW, a small number of chronomancers (say 2-4) are able to rapidly stack and share the quickness boon so that a group of 25-40 can attain 40+ seconds of quickness, giving groups the opportunity to hit with the damage of a group twice its size. And keep in mind that it is not particularly difficult for a chronomancer to perform the quickness stacking rotation.

As a result, this one boon provides a disproportionate advantage to groups willing to run it, despite the negative effect that quickness stacking has on public perception of the group’s level. Additionally, it’s possible that a guild who would choose to run quickness stacking may even come to rely on this “broken” mechanic too much—if they ever find themselves unable to stack quickness, they could go from being a threat to little more than an average zerg. In effect, quickness stacking seems to artificially inflate a guild’s competence when, in reality, the guild is exceedingly average.

I think addressing this boon’s overpowered nature in WvW would do a great deal to restore parity to the current meta.

Gun Squad, Heroes of JQ conquers BG garrison

After 2 hours of deliberation, with three neutral parties playing Devil’s Advocate for [GS] in order to ensure that the decision reached was unbiased and accurate, Both the Tournament Administration (Jinn, Whitehelm), and the Neutral Parties (Aldix, Equinox, Persia) have unanimously agreed to the ruling based on the following points:

The Interference was performed solely by Slomoshun, a member of Gun Squad [GS] at the time of the incident, during a round containing his own guild, Gun Squad. This violates Rule 4 of the tournament ruleset, which reads as follows: “No interference from guild members either during the round or prior to it. This includes pre-buffing, it can only be done by members playing within the round at the time.”

The first incident of interference was of moderate significance in regards to damage

The second incident of interference was of little significance in regards to damage

The occurrence of two separate instances of interference by the same member of [GS] in the same round casts doubt upon the intentions of the member

While there was a Guardian with the rank of Sea of Sorrows Silver Veteran, there was no other warrior present with the rank of Sea of Sorrows Silver Veteran.

Neither [GS] or [Hymn] had a participating rifle warrior, leaving no possibility for legitimate Fierce Shots to connect onto Chipp or Faov, via normal attacks or via projectile reflection.

Slomoshun’s attacks coincided with the target of the gank squad of [GS]

While the first incident was of questionable intent, it did have an impact on the round. Until the point at which footage of the second incident was reviewed, we considered that this may have been unintentional. However, when combined with the occurrence of the second incident, it is the belief of the ruling parties that the events were either intentional and malicious or unintentional but nonetheless displaying significant negligence.

With the agreement of the Tournament Administration and the Neutral Parties, we have decided, with great regret, to disqualify Gun Squad. While we decided that Gun Squad would have won the round with or without the interference, we cannot overlook the possibility that the interference was intentional or intended to be round impacting.

With this decision, we have also decided the following regarding tournament placement:

Gun Squad will not receive the title of first place nor will the receive the first place prize gold. The prize gold that would have been given to first place will instead be distributed evenly between the guilds other than Gun Squad that placed in the top six guilds. These guilds are Hymn, BMO, IX, TFH, BOO.

Hymn would not have won over Gun Squad, and therefore will be awarded second place.

BMO had already lost to both Gun Squad and Hymn, and will be accordingly awarded third place.

We realize this decision may be controversial, but we ask that you understand that this decision was not made hastily and every possible effort was made to ensure the fairness of the decision.

That said, we’ll be increasing the cooldowns on all tactics by 5-10 minutes. Also, once the scribing costs come down, as part of the april build, we can start looking at rebalancing their actual effects as well.

Regarding this kind of statement, I have a relatively simple question that I think a lot of dedicated WvW people would like to know:

Is ArenaNet’s unflagging dedication to failed World vs. World updates worth the high cost of continued and irreparable harm to its own game mode?

Do you actually care about the fact that they violated the terms of service?

Just curious because I personally don’t give a frosty fist of a kitten about it at all, not really sure what the big deal is. It’s not like they’re getting any rewards for being able to play the content on the internal testing servers. You can’t even use a trading post or your own characters on them and it requires a different client as well.

Thanks for taking the time to delete the actual content of my legitimate question and replace it with your words which fail to encapsulate the spirit of my original post.

I do actually care about any violations of the terms of service. Firstly, programs that read the actual memory of the client will always run the risk of exploitation even if the original intent of the program is benign. The fact of the matter is that the dps meter code is available to anyone with a search engine. As such, there is a huge potential for users with malicious intent to mess with data that we are in no way supposed to be able to access. I, for one, trust that ArenaNet would give users access to this kind of data if they thought it would be beneficial to the community. As it exists now, we have users deciding how to interpret the very strict language of the ToS and violating it with wanton disregard for rules that are in place to ensure that Guild Wars 2 runs smoothly.

The second issue is that, because the illegal dps meter is not universally accessible to the entire community, it very much gives an unfair advantage to players with access to sensitive data like damage done and enemy health numbers. As such, it creates very real imbalances in a community predicated on inclusion and parity.

Again, the community has every right to ask critical questions.

I’m interested to know the reasoning for inviting a guild like DnT to test the new raid given that at least one of its members spearheaded the development of a well-known dps meter and memory-reading tool that directly violates Guild Wars 2’s Terms of Service.

I won’t link it here so as to discourage exploitation of the game, but a quick Google search reveals that Death and Taxes is heavily involved with the development and distribution of this dps meter. The creator of the program even includes a disclaimer that he is not responsible for users being banned for their use of the tool. As the application in question reads the game client’s memory, its use constitutes a flagrant violation of the Terms of Service for Guild Wars 2.

Would the community be able to get any comment from ArenaNet regarding this troubling issue?

Obsidian Sanctum megaserver

Right now in Tier 2 NA, GvG is so popular that the Obsidian Sanctum is queued more than one night a week. And while there are 4 large capacity maps for general WvW, we have multiple guilds of 20+ members from 3 different servers all trying to go into one map with an unknown capacity. And even when all guilds who wants to enter OS are able, there is still only one arena for guilds to fight at any given time.

Additionally, only guilds within the same tier are able to fight each other. This limits the variety of opponents that each group is able to face.

Discussion: Would it be possible for ArenaNet to introduce megaserver technology to OS?

I linked these threads due to the amount of “urgency because the game is unplayable” feeling that is present. Below you will see quotes from different users that I’ve found to be the most enlightening on the subject of balance when matching up servers in WvW.

Did YB receive massive transfers?

YB has received a number of guilds, which is great. Their population can now better compete with that of SoS and FA.

More exciting is the GvG revival currently happening in T2. We are seeing a welcome return to groups engaging other, similarly sized groups open field. When guilds really want to test their worth, they head to OS and do 15s. T2 has recently seen (and will continue to see) an influx of players from Tier 1 who are tired of blobs and siege.

-have there been any changes to scouting/defending rewards imbalances? Why is it currently more attractive in terms of rewards to only take structures?

-Season 2 seems to go against this reason. I’ve spent the last ~2 months fighting the same servers.

I’m trying to keep up and look into the best wvw guilds on each server, which are TC’s?

TC does not have guilds that can compete with the ones I previously listed that are currently on T2 servers

I don’t play on US servers any more… but I find that difficult to believe. The skill level between t1 and t2 is immense on EU servers… a lot of guilds who used to be t1 have gone soft with easy kills. If they were better in t2 then they would not be in t2 for long because the server would rise up the ranks into t1.

I doubt the US is any different

I believe that you misunderstand—in NA, there is an appreciable amount of difference in skill level among guilds in T1 and T2. Any guild that is serious about skilled play (aside from [APeX] on Blackgate) will currently be found in Tier 2 (SoS, Mag, or DB). The preponderance of skilled guilds to fight on these three servers indicates that T2 is far and away the tier of GvGs, which is currently the best way to measure a group’s level of competency. Differences in the composition of T1 and T2 are caused solely by differences in coverage. It is not uncommon to see one guild group from T2 completely wipe a T1 blob (here is [EK] taking on a Blackgate blob). And when top guilds from T2 are forced to form up together in one large group to match the numbers of a T1 blob, the results are in the T2 zerg’s favor.

However, recently some T1 guilds that were previously known for their blobfest tendencies have branched out into even-numbered open field scrims and GvGs. It is my hope that more guilds in T1 will adopt the play style that has made T2 the haven for skilled encounters.

Stop Organized Groups in EOTM

Lets be honest, any half decent guild can take 20 people into EOTM and kill any group they find in there by just pressing 111111.

But lets say it’s a tuesday night, you’re at the end of your raid, you have 12-13 members left with 2-3 trial members that are locked out of WvW and you need something to do, this is what EOTM is good for.

Its a place you can take 15 people, kill bad players for an hour and have a laugh when you just don’t have the numbers online to GvG or deal with guilds that run 25-30 deep.

All the tears i see just makes me want to go back and do it even more, it adds fuel to the fire to see all you carebear pve players who get everything you want because you’re the majority and Anet caters to you.

It puts a smile on my face to know that groups of 50-60 carebear RPers stop playing the game for the night because they can’t run around and press 1 to earn champ bags.

You find running around pressing 1 on gates fun while others find running around pressing 1 collecting bags/tears from bad players fun. Play the game the way you want to play and stop complaining, i don’t see any threads from organized groups saying “oh sugar, i wish all these baddies would stop ktraining” because they just don’t care what you do.

exactly this. guilds like Arkham don’t need EoTM carebear farming to be reminded that they’re one of the best.

1. It’s a great warmup before fighting players who might actually present a challenge in WvW. Maybe your guild is waiting for a few more players to log on and want to hit the ground running in a borderland.

2. It’s a great ending to a night of tough wins and losses. Maybe some of your guildmates had to log off and you can’t quite handle real WvW with 15 people.

3. It’s a good testing area. How’s that sustain build working for your melee train? Maybe you need to work on synchronizing leaps or stripping boons or rotating stabilities. A sea of 60 people, regardless of their own skill level (dismal) will help you improve movement/new tactics.

Instant level 80 gem item?

As a WvWer, I would pay a hefty premium for access to a gem item like this. So sick of crafting the eight professions to 400 which will only net you 56 levels and costs a great deal of money and time. I don’t see the downside to it—once someone already has an 80 that he or she leveled normally, it would save so much effort just to buy an item and be able to hop in WvW ready to go.

There is a large WvW population that I’m sure would be happy to buy something like this. What do other people think?

on a 1-10 scale, I’d say my disappointment is about 8/10. I think the most glaring issues are the lack of account-bound WXP (despite being announced forever ago and formally announced 5 months ago) and no changes to the commander tag/commander system (despite having a Collaborative Development Initiative on the issue months ago as well).

Further, I think a more overarching and more pressing concern is the lack of developer transparency and communication. The WvW population currently has no estimation of when they can expect very serious game breaking bugs to be fixed. Instead, we are treated to unwanted commander pin changes, renaming of skill point buffs, and general carelessness on the part of ArenaNet. There have been months of concerns logged in the official forums that are still unresolved.

Is there anything we, as a concerned community seeing our game mode slowly die, can do to get some substantive feedback?

That is not accurate. It has been over 100 days since it was officially announced on the ANet news feed. It has been almost two months since they said it almost made the cut for January but still had some bugs to work out.

these are all ideas that have been brought up countless times. The commander tag issue alone has been brought up just about everyday, and the commander system as a whole has its own CDI.

ArenaNet will continue to ignore these requests until they face significant reason to implement them, such as the impending release of The Elder Scrolls Online.

Skill Lag renders the game unplayable

I understand that skill lag is fairly common in large zerg engagements in T1 or in 3-way SMC fights on most other servers, but it’s at the point where T2 is suffering on borderlands maps.

Will this ever be resolved?

Rendering Flames [REND] is actively recruiting all players (old and new) for WvW on the dashingly handsome Sea of Sorrows server. We have a solid core group of around 15 players that concentrate mostly on small ops, Borderland fights, and assisting militia commanders and larger guilds with their operations. We could be playing for fights and the next minute be building siege and taking objectives for server PPT. REND is first and foremost a casual guild—while we require guild representation in WvW, we do offer flexibility (90% rep) at all other times. We encourage players to team up and coordinate as often as possible and have at least a few people roaming around the clock when we aren’t guild raiding.

What REND wants
-any and all players regardless of experience level
-any and all players willing to grow with the guild (REND is only about 4 months old)
-players who are determined to succeed without losing sight of the fun of WvW
-folks who would be interested in venturing into sPvP
-HEAVIES and folks of the elusive necromancer and elementalist professions

What REND members can expect
-a growing guild with 100+ members
-a laid-back approach to WvW
-an active core group that loves to play the game
-a small ops oriented force that can respond to any WvW need
-zerg busting/havoc/no mercy for our foes
-Teamspeak coordination (SoS TS and a private TS)
-that weird voice Swift does when he says “oh my god”
-tons of ~~~~~memories~~~~~

We are active primarily at 5pm server time (8pm EST) and later Thursday-Sunday. Server reset on Friday is our most active time. At other times during the week, we roam, zerg, blob, and afk with the best of them.

REND is looking to become a roaming force to be reckoned with—one that will grow stronger with each WvW season. We need YOU to accomplish this.
