My main character — Celyddon Meyrick is an 80 Ranger on TC who spends 90% of his time in WvW. I’ve given a couple of hybrid RP/PvX guilds a chance and have been unable to find a good fit for my habits / needs regarding gameplay.
What I’m Looking For: A guild that has a steady presence in WvW and belongs to the AWC. A guild that coordinates its WvW efforts effectively within the guild and with the entire server team. I do like my RP here and there too, so if you RP that’s great — if you don’t, then as long as you don’t mind me repping someone else 10% of the time to engage in RP, that’s fine too. In fact, that may be even better. I tend to play mostly between 10pm and 2am ET on weeknights, but I run a lot of other hours on weekends too.
What I Bring: I’m team first in WvW. Lots of people might say that, but I totally mean it.
I suck at 1v1. (Go figure — I play a Ranger LOL.) But I do know my role and I think I’m pretty good at it. I support you with range and AoE — I know how to sweep those battlements when we’re on a siege. I rez my peeps in between those Hail of Arrows volleys. I’m not afraid / disinclined to sit on the wall of that tower for a couple of hours late at night all alone, defending it with the ballista / arrow cart all by myself and telling you when you need to come save my kitten because the gate is at 50% and there are 15 guys out front screaming for my head. I carry siege blueprints with me and pay for upgrades out of my own pocket when I can / need to. I follow orders and don’t QQ. In short — I’m a good soldier!
If you WvW a lot on TC, it’s quite likely you’ve run into me at least once or twice in the BL. I’m not an “expert” but I’m up around the 900 kill mark, so I’m not a newb either. Still looking for a good WvW home…
Thanks for reading.
FA: I have enjoyed quite a few of the fights with you guys. I have seen your folks make some really smart, coordinated tactical moves during prime time when our strengths were pretty equal in a specific BL. I think at one point on Sunday night (forgot which BL I was in) you guys were running circles around us tactically — two zergs acting in perfect concert had us running around reacting instead of calling the fights.
You’ve also got some great four and five mans running around who played very smart. I’m sorry this fight got unbalanced right off the tip — if it had stayed close over the weekend, I think we would have playing a very different game last night.
GL to you guys next round!

Tarnished Coast
Friendly fire would require full class rebalancing — it would render most AoE all but useless and completely change the dynamics around keep / tower sieges. You might as well just delete the Ranger profession. ;-P
Personally — I loathe the use of meta tactics to change the battle. So I’m glad it’s about 99% likely you will never get your wish. If you really want that style of play so badly, I suggest you choose a different MMO — I don’t know…maybe…EVE Online.
More importantly, if you are running around zerging like a “headless chicken”, you aren’t all that successful in WvW unless your opponents are completely incompetent. Yeah, zergs dominate siege on towers and keeps. But supply and efficiency / speed are the real key to dominance between two (or three) forces of near equal strength. My experience has been that in order to really rock a map in WvW, you have to use at least two zergs and coordinate their activity really well. I.e., expect where the zerg needs to be before it becomes obvious that’s where it needs to be, not run willy nilly attacking things with a different color icon. That way you conserve time and take minor objectives efficiently on the way to the major battles.
The best commanders repeatedly display an ability to hear a call for help in defense, first take a camp (or two), resupply the zerg and arrive just in time to wipe the siege attack right before it succeeds. They are thinking two or three fights ahead, not responding to the latest “OMG zerg is here and going to take the tower! Everyone come help!” Headless chickens need not apply.
Making things even more demoralizing, the player was seen and targeted, and because of this the account name was discovered: It was the same account of a person accused of hacking the orbs in weeks prior on different servers. This hacker has STILL not been banned. Instead, players on the forums are accused of “assassination of character” by the moderators and the threads are quickly closed to sweep the problem under the rug.
Amen.
I’m sorry but you can’t tell me that knowing the time when it occurred and the player’s account they can’t track this down in the data. If that’s true, then that’s even more pathetic. Why does this guy still have an account?
Those are some pretty cool ideas. I know nothing about how hard they are to implement, but they sure sound cool.
I guess the main issue many would disagree on is: WvW “Fun” vs. WvW to “Win”
To me, a completely imbalanced match is not all that much fun no matter which side you’re on. Others would disagree. I wouldn’t mind seeing a “handicap” system put in place. This could either be done once a week based on current standings, or maybe once every twelve hours within a match.
Basically, let’s say 10, 11, and 12 are matched. The low rank team (12) starts with a bonus — maybe +X% health, power. The middle team (11) gets nothing. The top rank (10) gets -X% health power. If done within a match, everyone would start at 0 and you would do it periodically based on score.
Same as handicaps work in many sports — it basically gives the less-skilled team a fighting chance to make it interesting. Ideally, I just want the matches to still be competitive on day 7 — not over on Day 1.
@Kazak — Yeah I saw that story — pretty upstanding of you guys. It was SSed and reported last night — actually it was around 2am ET this morning.
To clarify — I don’t blame any server for this. I’m sure 99% of the people on that team know nothing about it. It’s a handful of obnoxious individuals doing it without the support of the server / team.
As OldRodKS said — It happened to us (TC) last night. I didn’t see it either, but I believe the people who did and were talking about it in /team.
Unless they put flying ability in the game and forgot to tell us, it’s a flat out hack. I’m OK with dirty tricks, but this is beyond that.

I agree with your general sentiment — patience is required on much of this, and I’m sure the rendering issue will improve over time provided people have the hardware to deal.
However, the Orb / Flying hack is now going on two weeks and has yet to even be acknowledged, much less fixed. Given that this is not a “soft” or “people” issue like the transfers — it is a flat out hack / cheat and practically impossible to defend against during late night when pops are low — this should be at the top of the WvW priority list.
So I question your “1 week” timeframe on hacks and exploits.
NiimThe bigger issue with Mesmer portals is the fact that mesmers can glitch into keeps, they do not need to hide in there. In fact I would guess a lot of the claims that they ‘hid’ was more likely they glitched in after the fact. That bug needs to be fixed, otherwise mesmer portals are fine.
THIS! I was on the wall defending last night at Longview and a Mesmer did this over and over. I was watching for her after the first time I caught her, so every time she “magically appeared” on our wall behind the defenders I hit her with rapid fire and set my pet on her, so she had to bail before she could open the portal. She must have tried it at least a dozen times in one siege only to have me nail her on every attempt. Finally I was able to get an angle on her where she was doing it from — in a corner of the wall near the gate — and force her to leave the spot.
This is an exploit — pure and simple. Many of you probably don’t even realize it’s been done to you and are still wondering how several attackers managed to appear on your wall behind your defenders.
@Arawn
Sorry, but #3 is a copout. This has been going on for over two weeks, numerous screenshots have been provided on multiple servers — there is even a video on YouTube. They should be able to verify this through the data if they have the time it occurred and a screenshot. They don’t have to actually be there in person when it happened.
So far, they haven’t even ACKNOWLEDGED the problem exists — much less banned a user or fixed it. This hack is gamebreaking — it will kill WvW completely. As in…people leaving in droves…if it isn’t fixed quickly. It should be their #1 priority and at the very least they should have made an announcement that anyone caught doing it will be permabanned — just for deterrent effect.

Out of the mist they struck…and back to the mist they went.
The Marchioness of Selma, Nitasha Feyborn I is proud to announce her financial and political support for an elite unit of Tyrian defenders within The Grey Guard henceforth to be known as:
The Grey Stalkers
Recognizing that not all battles are won by armies, and that not all those who serve do so in uniform, The Grey Stalkers of Pax Aeternum will be charged specifically with the task of harassing our enemies wherever they go in the Borderlands. Operating in small teams of 4-10, the Grey Stalkers will focus on taking enemy supply camps, eliminating sentries, neutralizing supply caravans and generally wreaking havoc upon our enemies with precision tactics. Which is to say…
We will make their lives HELL!
- Are you an individual with little taste for military formality, but a large appetite for destruction?
- Are you accustomed to working with small teams that operate like brothers and sisters?
- Are you the type who believes enemy morale is a thing to be ground into a fine powder beneath your boot heel?
- Most importantly…are you ready to put those beliefs into action?
If you answered “YES!” to one or more of the questions above, then you just might be a Grey Stalker. Come talk to The Grey Guard of Pax Aeternum and find out if you have what it takes to be a member of this new and exciting effort.
The Grey Stalkers: Out of the mist they struck…and back to the mist they went
Pax Aeternum is currently recruiting experienced and novice Role Players to take part in a very dedicated World vs. World initiative as outlined above. Our vision is to create small Borderlands strike teams who will become expert at working together and executing precision operations against our enemies in the Borderlands while maintaining an IC / RP element to their efforts. (Mumble / Voice comm optional but encouraged!)
These teams will operate in cooperation with the strategic direction of Tarnished Coast field Commanders — targeting objectives as requested, escorting crucial supply caravans, freelancing when no overall strategy is in place, and lending their support to large-scale siege operations as appropriate. We want TC Commanders to know they always have experienced units at their disposal who are ready, willing and able to respond instantly to their orders and achieve the objectives their strategic plans require.
Those with no interest in WvW combat but who have an IC interest in supporting such efforts either through crafting special weapons and other items (are you James Bonds’ Q?), mercantile / financial support (are you the Master Day Trader of the Trading post?), etc. will also be welcomed to The Grey Guard with open arms.
Let’s be clear: Our main objective remains RP. But we don’t see any reason why that can’t co-exist with a targeted and productive WvW effort. We also hope to have dedicated PvE / Dungeon teams and sPvP teams as interest develops, but our initial focus will be WvW.
