whats the deal with multi-boxing?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

so i came across this dude multi-boxing and noticed that i couldnt event participate in a event because i couldnt touch a mob before he/she went down. so i asked about what that person was doing and they said it was multi-boxing.
isnt this unfair? i think this should not be allowed…
think of all the new players and how annoyed they will be…

if anyone has anything to say go ahead and post here

You’re look at the person behind the character and saying it’s unfair. Just as a group is unfair, just as a guild is unfair. If I have 9 fingers, everyone with 10 fingers is playing unfair.

You can’t balance by the person behind the computer, you balance by account.

PS Why are you intent on killing those characters target, that’s the only mob? Are you trying to kill their target befor they can? If that so, you’re the one picking on them. What’s the event that can be dominated by 2 characters, I want to look at it.

I added other responses from previous answers. And I stated what definitions of what multiboxing, and automation.

No, this is the stance on multi-boxing:

Umm, maybe the edit happened after you read your reference. The above link explicitly states:

“EDIT: This post has been quoted, and it is inaccurate. ArenaNet does not prohibit Multi- or Dual-Boxing as along as the player is active on each account and is not botting or using other third-party programs to “play” the account.”

Multi-boxing is ‘legal’. Botting, either with one or multiple accounts is not.

There’s a difference, your pointing to the use of the word as a verb, my definition is of the noun.

The noun definition would be:
Multiboxing is a term used mostly in MMORPGs to refer to playing as multiple separate characters simultaneously. This can either be achieved by using multiple separate machines to run the game or by running multiple separate instances of the game.

Using it as a verb is broader.

Tools
Multiboxing may be as simple as running two instances of the game on one computer (each logged in to a separate account) and switching between them.1 Players may also use multiple computers, each with their own keyboard and mouse. This quickly becomes impractical with an increasing number of computers, so a keyboard multiplexer may be used, which sends the signals from a single keyboard to several computers.

Software tools include programs which can simulate keyboard multiplexing by sending keystrokes to different instances of the game simultaneously, or across networks. Voice command software can also be used.

Often, heavy use is made of the macros built into the game’s default interface. This allows more complex instructions to be issued with a single keypress. Examples include targeting a certain character and healing them, or firing a spell at another character’s target.2

*Interesting mind candy though. Maybe the verb use should be multiboxinging.

hmm…I don’t experience cullying on that map until I’m at the gate, and I can always see my group.

Until they fix the map, maybe use the mini map party dots to make sure you stay near your group. Maybe warn the group you wont be able to see them and have them draw and ping where they are on the mini map.

My computers are slower than yours. Q9300 and E5200, Radeon 4850 and GeForce 9600, 8 or 4gb, Win7-64b. My internet is very good though.

By “culling” you mean the lag protection thing, where your mob view radius gets shorter for the more things moving around you? Without it, you’d have lag.

With about 40 mobs fighting or dead near you it gets hard to play, cause you can’t see what’s killing you.

Just pickup on dead mobs so they evaporate. Try to stay away 15m from the dense part of the mobs and players. The less moving things and dead around you the farther you can see the mob coming from.

It depends on what is meant by “multi-boxing”. It is not ok to use anything 3rd-party that gets you an advantage. If you have 2 computers, each with its own mouse, each with its own keyboard, and you are playing on 2 separate accounts with no “botting” software or macros, etc., then you can play them both simultaneously.

Incorrect, you can play them one at a time. If you alone are using any method to attack a target at the same time with both accounts, you’re in violation.

Both accounts can be online, but your hands play one account or the other.

If you just boot up two accounts on the same machine and tab between them, controlling them with distinct inputs, they don’t care. I do that all the time and have admitted as much on the forums, in threads I know were getting official scrutiny. It’s only if you control multiple accounts with a single simultaneous input that they get upset.

Multiboxing, which is NOT allowed in GW2, is controlling separate characters simultaneously. One key press, one response per account.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-boxing

Alt+tab between accounts isn’t multiboxing. Playing each box one at a time isn’t multiboxing. This switching between accounts seems allowed in GW2.

Yes, 5 accounts ganking your solo account isn’t fair, nor is it a fair comparison, nor is it exclusive to multiboxing. Compare account to account, not the person’s behind the computer.

I don’t think we’re allowed to post what the NCSoft staff said.

They ignored:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/account/Policy-Third-Party-Programs/

They ignored everything in the forums contrary to this:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Q-Is-multi-boxing-allowed/first#post245276

So my guess is if you play one account, then stop and then play the other, you may be okay. Playing one account at a time.
If you play both/many at the same time in anyway (1-wireless keyboard transmitter to multiple receiver computers, clone key software, KVM, maybe even using one hand per computer) your in violation.

Multiboxing was allowed in GW1. Not in GW2.

I was told after several days that this is they’re true stance on multiboxing:

It was made very clear to me that any other information on multiboxing contrary to the above post is incorrect.

Macros and Salvaging

I can mimick the same course of action by using my left hand to double click at the same speed.

I don’t know any human that can click every 6 milliseconds 25 times in a row. Would need a computer to measure that. A computer could click it, and send a email telling someone it was done. Humans don’t always understand what computers tell them.

Macros and Salvaging

I wouldn’t use the macro, too risky in this premature of a game. 25 exactly timed clicks would look like automation to a computer. Even if others where doing it, I wouldn’t.

In my opinion it doesn’t give you an advantage, and would seem to pass the third party software test. If the clicks are the same speed as a humans.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/account/Policy-Third-Party-Programs/first#post354869

Nice idea though. My $60 mouse only has finite clicks before it dies. Normally the less clicks the better.

You could suggest the dev’s make a savage bucket for mass salvaging and less clicking.

What unfair advantage? Is the dual/multi-logger gonna come gank you with his ‘army’?

To compare game balanced fairness, you would compare the 50 multiboxers accounts to 50 players accounts.
Comparing any group of 50 accounts against 1 account would be an unfair comparison.
Multiboxer accounts have no advantage over non-boxers accounts.

A lot of apple to oranges comparisons in this thread when comparing a multiboxers.

A multiboxer with 50 accounts is 50 accounts and all that it represents. The comparison would against 50 opposing accounts.
