This isn’t a bug report… but I have to explain:

It looks like a bug report, couple with a complaint about how how long it takes some bugs to get fixed.

I’m wondering how a high priority quest that people pay gems for that involves mastery points and is super lengthy and annoying has one of the most ridiculous bugs (basically trolls you RIGHT at the end saying HAH! go back to start for no reason and do this most annoying maze again)… goes unfixed for so long?

It’s a reasonable question and the answer isn’t as simple as “well if it costs gems…” Developers look at all sorts of things, primarily:

  • how many people are affected?
  • how badly are they affected? i.e. is it annoying or is it game breaking?
  • is there a work-around?
  • does it have economic implications?
  • do we know why it happens?
  • does the potential fix affect other things?
  • and sure, did people pay gems for access

And so on.

There’s no software in the world without bugs and every company has it’s own process for prioritizing and resolving bugs. Gaming software tends to have more bugs (for the reasons Vayne states among others) and so new content comes out before old bugs get resolved, which means they fall in priority relative to newer problems.

I almost quit this game right there. I should’ve… I anticipate this won’t be the first time I get a brain aneurysm.

Yeah, I hear that. I try not to worry too much about bugs — something happens, I try a different way or do something else for a while. Even so, I’ve run into bugs in this game that drive me nuts.

tl;dr
I’m sorry that this bug blocked your progress and I hope that you can step around the issue the next time, so that it won’t also block your enjoyment. Bugs are, alas, a fact of gaming, though, so as you say: this won’t be the first or the last one.

I think I see what you guys are saying. I guess it’s just that all of the ways this particular bug screws you over just makes it really really annoying… I wish it was fixed but I get that they have priorities.

No brain aneurysm yet heh.

Hello,

This isn’t a bug report… but I have to explain:

I ran into a weird bug at the end of the Tangled Paths LS… basically you get stuck behind an invisible wall and can’t progress any further. What makes this one really special is that you go through a really annoying set of steps (don’t want to spoil anything for anyone) but it takes a while let me just tell ya. Only at the end does this bug show up which makes it even more special. OK I thought… I’ll just try it one more time. Probably just glitched out.

It happened AGAIN. You could imagine at this point I wanted to throw my mouse into my screen but I held back. I checked online… maybe my computer is to blame. Nope. Apparently there is a YouTube video of this with hundreds of views and so I am obviously not the only one. This YouTube video shows a workaround… which I was lucky enough to pull off before throwing my mouse into my screen.

Furthermore, this is not just some obscure side achievement but a main LS with even a Mastery Point attached to it… you would think QA testing exists for this kind of thing? I found a 2 month old forum post as well bringing up the same problem.

“play how you want” does not apply to this. It was a statement about getting to max level and getting the strongest gear, which at the time was only exotic. Want masteries? Do things that earn masteries. Doesn’t matter if you like that activity or not.

Why doesn’t it matter if we like the activity or not?

Anet made Festive Imbiber last only through Wintersday. People complained that they didn’t like the activity and so Anet changed their stance and now Festive Imbiber will be open all year.

Things can change for the better if people complain about activities they don’t enjoy… It’s kind of the point of complaining…

If masteries where a limited time achievement you might have a point. You can earn more masteries than what’s required, clearly they didn’t want to just give it away and yet still gave you options. They want you to work for it

Being time-limited has nothing to do with my argument. My argument was that people don’t like certain activities and therefore they have the right to complain to seek adjustments.

Actually it has everything to do with it. The only way to complete Festive Imbiber is to drink Wintersday Drinks. They did not change the amount you need to drink, and they did not change the only way to acquire drinks which is getting them from presents or buying them. They only changed how long you had to complete the achievement.

They changed how long you had to complete the achievement. Why? Because people complained.

So it still proves my point. So I’m saying there is no difference… I thought that was clear.

Because people complained about fairness. And ANet saw reason in the argument, making it more fair. This is not a matter of fairness. It’s completely different.

There are already 17 more available Mastery Points than you need to unlock everything in Tyria. That’s a line of four masteries worth of points. If you can’t manage to find something you can do in that much, then you’re not even trying.

Well, that would be find and dandy if a majority of them are attainable through ordinary means…

which they aren’t. They are gated behind really obscure JP’s or completing ridiculous collections… full cultural unlocks? Holy moly… for ONE point? LOL! I have to spend that gold on Ascended upgrades first!

I think you get my point.

I dont understand the “I am being forced to do something” line thats seems to be common in complaints on this forum.
In an MMO you are NOT forced to do anything.
There seems to be a mentality that if I want XXX and I am required to do YYY to get it then I am forced to do YYY.
Not everyone can have everything, unless you are prepared to meet all the criteria needed to get everything.
In all reward based MMOs , in order to get a reward of some type you will be required to do something to get it.
But you are not being forced too, as getting the reward isnt mandatory.

I hate these lines of arguments…

“The reward isn’t mandatory” …. but the “reward” is the whole freaking point of gaming…

I mean you don’t play games for no rewards… You play for the reward of accomplishing virtual goals… Unless you honestly are saying you play games for… nothing? People usually do things because they are rewarding in some way. It’s a basic psychological principle.

Theres no definition of what the people in an MMO have to be doing.
All an MMO requires is that its a game for more than 1 person.
If killing virtual creatures was the only aim, then thats all you would XP for.

I get your point but I have to actually disagree. I don’t want to get into a debate about semantics but I think I can make a point by asking you why you don’t play Second Life…

Second Life is a huge community of online players doing… random things but there is no lynchpin to tie it all together. In MMORPG’s, the lynchpin is the RPG aspect. The fact that you can “role play” and so I like to roleplay as a conqueror or knight or awesome bounty hunter usually though sometimes I can roleplay as a goat in goat simulator or a piece of toast or a surgeon even.

But if I play an MMORPG, there are certain expectations. Namely, that I will be killing virtual monsters to save virtual people. And that I won’t be doing this by doing timed JP’s all day long.

This is coming from someone who did get the JP achievement already… though I didn’t enjoy it that much.

I know the real reason you all don’t like the JP’s…

It’s because you all (and I) bought this game to play an MMORPG… Not Super Mario 5…

A few JP here and there fine. But I do think Anet is relying too much on “non-combat” options to make their content feel “new”…

But they forget that the whole point of MMO’s is to like… kill virtual creatures… not to figure out how to land on the next candy cane.

Time-limited or not, unfun activities are unfun for certain people.

Granted, this brings up another issue…

I realized today that a lot of these activities are “unfun” because you don’t get to actually use the gear you work hard for. I spent so much gold and time on making ascended weapons/gear and yet… it’s pointless really because I’m constantly being directed by PvE content to pickup a flamethrower or get into a golem or to do a jumping puzzle… basically using anything other than the combat system itself and the gear you worked hard for.

I don’t think it’s a huge problem… yet… but can see a lack of focus and too much reliance on non-combat options to fill in content that it becomes tedious. See: Wintersday JP, and this living story S2 that I’m doing right now where all the missions are basically, “hey let’s take away all your stuff and have you do non-mmo things like jumping around and playing puzzle games and doing endless runners…”

I think my situation falls in line with this one. After realizing you can not continue gaining XP until after you place mastery points, I noticed I was very close to maxing out my yellow xp bars but only had 2 Tyria Mastery points. I needed at least 4 more to fill in the next tier…

So basically I had 2 choices:

1. Play what I want to play but risk filling up my mastery xp and wasting xp
2. Purchase living story or do achievements (not my cup of tea) to get mastery points and… I have to do them RIGHT AWAY or else I waste xp…

So now I feel absolutely FORCED to do Living Story season 2. Or achievements… to get enough mastery points before I waste any more XP.

People don’t like to feel as if their time is wasted… and at the moment the system makes you feel like you need to get mastery points NOW or else you are wasting your time.

I noticed problems with another gem store clothing item… the noble dress for females makes the upper leg disappear and so every time you jump with a weapon unholstered, you see a calves and feet, and no thighs. It’s really obvious.

Not trying to derail or anything, just pointing out that I think if people are paying real money for these things, they should at least try to put quality effort or else spenders like my self will feel less inclined to, well, spend our hard earned real money on broken cosmetic goods like this.

Confusing Item Labels

Hello all,

Just saw an item from Wintersday Vendor called “Watchwork Portal Device” and was curious so I /wiki to see:

“Double-click to receive a bundle item that can create a portal between two locations.”

So the wording says double click to receive an item. Yes, I understand it is “consumable” but the wording says, double click the consumable, and you will receive an item that creates a portal.

I assumed that I would actually like, “receive an item”…

Instead, your action bar just switches instantly. Also, I thought it would be permanent like the kites, whose descriptions are pretty similar. They say like, “Double click to get bundle item” or something like that.

Word to the wise, and also perhaps a humble request for Anet to consider changing the wording? This is really disheartening to realize you just wasted 35k karma and 100 snowflakes to test drive a one time use object.

Yes, I used it right on top of the Wintersday vendor himself. I need a hug.

Issues with character art, weapons, or armor?

Human Female Thief

“Noble Count Outfit”

I love the Noble Count dress for human female but every time I jump with weapons drawn out, I see a huge gap between her legs and the dress. Like, her legs are missing a huge chunk. And it’s not barely noticeable, it’s REALLY noticeable. Just check out the picture.

Using DAGGER and PISTOL offhand.

For a 700 gem purchase, this is kind of a kick in the face.

BTW, I thought shrinking the height of my character would help so I bought a makeover kit but nope. 300 more gems wasted. And my character is shorter now.

Thoughts on Ascended Gear? [Merged threads]

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

“Here’s what we believe: If someone wants to play for a thousand hours to get an item that is so rare that other players can’t realistically acquire it, that rare item should be differentiated by its visual appearance and rarity alone, not by being more powerful than everything else in the game. Otherwise, your MMO becomes all about grinding to get the best gear. We don’t make grindy games — we leave the grind to other MMOs.”
-Mike Obrien, President of Arenanet

Fun impacts loot collection. The rarest items in the game are not more powerful than other items, so you don’t need them to be the best. The rarest items have unique looks to help your character feel that sense of accomplishment, but it’s not required to play the game. We don’t need to make mandatory gear treadmills, we make all of it optional, so those who find it fun to chase this prestigious gear can do so, but those who don’t are just as powerful and get to have fun too.”
– Colin Johanson

Lies, lies and more lies.

“I’d like to respond to concerns players have raised about ascended items. Please keep in mind that we’re releasing this as one portion of a massive November update that introduces and improves many aspects of challenge, progression, and rewards. With this and upcoming updates, we view ourselves as introducing large amounts of content with supporting systems and features, akin to an expansion pack, building on Guild Wars 2 through a series of live releases. So it’s important for us to be able to add an expansion pack’s worth of progression and rewards to support that content.

Our goal is not to create a gear treadmill. Our goal is to ensure we have a proper progression for players from exotic up to legendary without a massive jump in reward between the two. We will slowly add the remaining ascended gear items and legendary items in future updates to allow people time to acquire them as we add exciting new content that deserves exciting rewards. We will not be adding a new tier of gear every 3 months that we expect everyone to chase after and then get the next set and so on.

Ascended and infusion rewards will be available in both PvE and WvW over time, and be made available through all sorts of content around the world including existing content. PvP will remain unaffected to ensure our intended PvP balance going forward. We are also working on other reward and progression systems for the game that tie into current and new content and features. As you know we care very much about your support and opinion and are listening intently to what you say.
Finally we look forward to hearing your thoughts on the upcoming content, and we will ensure we share our thoughts with you on the experiences we share in the Lost Shores."

Chris Whiteside – Studio Design Director

They confirmed there will be an entire tier of Ascended armor. Read their blog about it. This does not confirm the existence of a Gear Treadmill though

Doesn’t that sound a bit self-contradictory to you?

“We’re adding a new tier, but it’s not a new tier…” is what I kind of hear out of all this.

One new tier=/=gear treadmill.

It isn’t contradictory until Anet decides to set the treadmill into motion with more and more additional tiers.

At this point, I see the Ascended gear as the last step on a stair towards finality. Especially because of the Infusion mechanic, which I believe is a versatile tool to avoid the need for further stat increases when it comes to new high-level challenges.

I really do hope you are right… However, historical perspective makes me a bit less optimistic…

With the advent of such things as “DLC” and “Season passes” to games, can you blame a guy for being so jaded?

Negatron batman. Either way, it doesn’t matter since I’ll wait for the update and see how it goes before spouting my hate speech and doomsaying on the forum about what a tyrannical money hungry company Anet is.

You know, the logical response.

Also, I forgot to ask a question I’ve been meaning to ask you.

Do you honestly believe that the ring and backslot are going to be the only ascended tier items?

Do you honestly believe that Anet is bothering to create a WHOLE other tier of gear… for just rings and backslot?

If so, I have some really awesome snake oil to sell you that cures cancer and acne.

I would like to point you towards the keywords of Phy’s first message:
as of now
He is correct in that aspect and in no way contradicts the information I posted after him.

I feel the outrage on the forums is unwarranted at this point. Had this been the second or third time Anet introduced a new tier, there would be chance for an actual debate.

All I’m seeing now is slippery slope fallacies based on the experience in other MMO’s.

I get your point… but all I’m trying to do is state the obvious. Anet obviously wants to create a full set of Ascended armor. Since when has a tier of gear in any MMO only constituted 2 types of accessories? Never! Do you expect anyone to believe that Anet intends for ONLY rings and backpacks to be Ascended tier? I think you know the answer to this, but hate to say it aloud. Has this been “officially” announced? No. Have gamers been subject to this kind of surreptitious treatment before? Yes!

Therefore, do gamers have adequate rationale for assuming that this will be a gear treadmill?

Sure! It is certainly not an unreasonable assumption to make. The “politi-speak” being doled out by their customer reps is just insulting icing on the cake.

This is obviously a cash grab. The stats are high enough to make basically Everyone who plays GW2 want to get a full set… This is undeniable. Ask yourself, will you be happy with 8% less stats than everyone else?

Anet knows you will not be “comfortable” being “subpar”… this is an age old marketing tactic, though it is also a fully reprehensible one.

Then, once everyone starts making noise, you send a nice smiling rep to calm the masses and use “euphemisms” to convince you that this is what you wanted all along.

Sound familiar?

It should.

Hello sheep, enjoy the fleecing. I’m already cutting my losses and will be seeing you all in WvWvW no more.

Exactly, without a full set of back and ring ascended items no one will take me seriously.

DOOM I SAY!

Did you even see the stats on, say, an ascended ring before spewing your sarcasm?

Go look it up. Then come back and tell me how wrong you were.
