Stop dying to Grand High Viscount
Sorry but the anet promotion of zerg mentality has removed the skill mechanic from the game.
Had no idea. I just stand in melee range and autoattack for 40 years because his HP is ridiculous. You don’t really seem to die in melee range.
Priorities, what to do?
Spend hours with dye
I feel so stupid for not noticing that. Can this get stickied or somehow PSA’ed to all the players?
And there was rejoicing throughout the land…until we got to the fight again and realized no one else saw this post.
I was just hiding behind walls and rezzing people after he finished demonstrating the worst case of dandruff ever.
My characters think I’m crazy.
I think that as ppl start to finish the part 2 of Bloody Prince instance, they will notice the correlation of the candy glaze aoe and the dmg buff and do the same on Viscount.
Well, hopefully…
Yep just stay in melee and autoattack and grap a coffee or somthink it gonna take few min to take him down
Because it is intuitively obvious that players were meant to stand in those small red circles to avoid the candy corn aoe when on other bosses players are supposed to stand out of those same red circles in order to avoid getting one hit killed.
o snap. didn’t know. i just avoided all red circles.
i was wondering if these bosses had more mechanics to them than your usual HP sponge.

Also noticed tonight that while candy coated you do normal damage to him (without it you do significantly less).
He doesn’t take nearly as long if enough people are getting coated since they’re doing more damage and there are less people to revive.

It’s not the red circles, it’s the pink candy on the floor he puts down just before using the candy corn throw. That gives you the candy coating. The red circles will hurt you.
It’s only day two, give people time to figure it out. Even in the zerg, I noticed the “candy” buff but I wasn’t entirely sure of the point.
Forever known as “that slow guardian who can’t jump worth crap”.
The other thing is always watch for him to start throwing the candy, dodge the first set, start moving forward when he launches the second set, run backwards for the next, etc. It’s easy enough to dodge as is.

Or just you know spam feedback and other reflects on him. Each candy corn he throws removes a stack of defiant from him rendering him useless during the barrage phase.
There are no mechanics in the zerg. Hit and rez.

When I used feedback on vomitboy I didn’t notice it doing any good whatsoever, he still barraged people with candy bombs.
Or just melee. He never throws candy at his feet, it’s always ranged, and with big enough zerg his melee range aoe-s can be pretty much ignored completely.

His mechanic is very simple, when you see the pools of candy, stand in them to get candy coated, his projectiles won’t affect you if you are.
Stand in the pool of candy, let it get to 8-9 stacks (at 10 it’ll knock you down), and then watch as everyone else is downed and knocked about.
With the above and moving out of the red circles, you should take minimal damage during the fight.
It’s not the players fault when a fight is unintuitive.
Thanks, I’ll try to remember that next time. With all the effects flying around, I didn’t even notice the candy pools.

Yeah, it doesn’t hurt to read the cute-sy icons you get from time to time (the candy corn ones, those are the buffs the OP is talkin about). And the candy pools are still easy to see even with a massive amount of particle effects and zerg going on.
Now, can someone please tell me Lich’s mechanics? How do we stop him from Life Stealing and regaining a huge percentage of his 100Billion HP??
later. It doesn’t care that I’m there.”
It also works to stay at melee range and have mesmers use feedback and eles use swirling winds. Projectile blocks/reflect also take the bite out of his candy corns.
Good to know the mechanic though. I just assumed the candy coating was being applied by adds and tried to avoid it.

A lot of people missing the part about doing way more damage while you have the candy buff, too.
Well maybe a little less health would also be a good idea, the fight can be fun but in overflows can literly take half an hour because of his health and one shot mechanic.

Oh, so that’s how you do it…
I just naturally assume that goo on the floor from the boss is supposed to be avoided. I just did this with my cam pointed into the air to avoid the missiles.

Actually if you want to read between the lines, several times they’ve posted about making WvW more diverse instead of just all zerg all the time.
Anet didn’t “encourage” that in this update. They can’t tell the players how to play or you’d whine about them doing that.
No ones forcing the monkey’s to zerg. They do that on their own. Follow OPs advice and then attack from range.
Bam, you’re as effective as melee and safer.
When they tell you to stack, say no. Say little else after that if anything at all. Or else give them the line you’d give Anet here: Quit telling me how to play!
The drama writes itself. Take it in like you would a refreshing morning breeze. Pick up your bag and don’t forget your chest.
The mechanics in the game get lost on a lot of people, but then not everyone ‘gets’ mechanics. I’ve sat there in chat and tried to explain to people how it works but still people won’t listen..
Best thing to do is just to tell everyone to stack on viscount or they will get killed by missiles. People listen to that (after being downed once) and the pink goo will spawn underneath him so at least damage is somewhat o.k. although everyone will get knocked back when it hits 10 stacks.
You just have to assume that people will never get mechanics because its a diverse crowd.
That all said, if you know the mechanics then you as an individual are pretty much safe and the ones that don’t listen, at least they are being somewhat effective rather than being downed.
Anet didn’t “encourage” that in this update.
Considering you can’t go 5 feet in the labyrinth solo without getting cc’d to hell and back, I’m going to go ahead and dispute this statement.

You mean while trying to ignore everything and run through to catch up to the zerg? God forbid you actually have to fight your way there.

No I mean when trying to fight things I have 2 dodges and 2 stunbreaks, once 2 or 3 guys get on you with cc’s it gets really amazingly annoying. Also that trying to fight things solo in there is completely pointless and not worthwhile in any way, and running with the zerg is only slightly better.

No. when trying to approach and defeat a small group of 2 skeletons and one mummy. CC all the time.

Hit him from range. He lifesteals within melee range.
Had that backwards, apparently. My bad! Sorry. Looks like if you’re in mid-range from him, he lifesteals so stacking on him is the way to go.

Following the zerg is the Labyrinth is just a good way to keep from being overwhelmed by trash mobs. Past that, you’re more than free to study the boss fights – they take long enough.
Forever known as “that slow guardian who can’t jump worth crap”.
Doing that actually avoids damage from the missiles? Huh. That’s…
I mean, its nice that there is a mechanic to avoid it, since dodging it is somewhat unreliable especially in the zerg where its hard to see it coming. But it seems completely counter-intuitive. You have to let yourself get hit by something most players would assume is harmful (most times stuff on ground = bad, get away) and indeed even the game itself implies is harmful given the fact that 10 stacks = knockdown, in order to avoid death by missile.
Also… the candy pools don’t seem to appear all the time. I’ve had whole battles go by without actually noticing them at all (unless they were all centered on the boss himself while I was ranging him, and all the particle effects from the zerg would make it hard to see). Do projectile reflects stop them too?
it would be hard to see coming if you have your graphics up turn it down and turn on terrain and sky and boom you can easy see the red circles even in a huge zerg
Zerg content = auto attack and afk. Why bother with the mechanics when zergs can simply ignore them.

cause the grand Viscount can one shot a fully stacked hp warrior with certain skill’s and AFK on it is bad cuas if you die in a bad spot no one can res you and you will not get credit if you dont do enough dmg on it not to mention the boss goes buck wild at time just like the lich.

This is what I did. Got into melee and hit autoattack. Got up, took a dump, grabbed some coffee and came back in time for the end.

My opinion.
I don’t believe Anet promotes zerg mentality – we do. If they did, the bosses would have no mechanics at all. Some players choose to ignore them. That is on us, not Anet.
I have to disagree with the “stand in melee” strategy, as all of the times I’ve killed the Viscount, the vast majority of the people I see dead were in melee range.
His AoEs DO hit within melee range, and when the majority of the zerg is stacked on top of him, I’ve seen his candy corn barrage stack all 20-ish red circles in one spot and insta-down the entire mob of people.
While I agree that the candy buff mechanic is not intuitive at all, it is definitely the better way to go than standing in melee range.
Because it is intuitively obvious that players were meant to stand in those small red circles to avoid the candy corn aoe when on other bosses players are supposed to stand out of those same red circles in order to avoid getting one hit killed.
the glazed floor doesn’t appear as red circles. But yeah, actual thinking and trying out different strategies; god forbid! players have to think again!
the horror!

the hammer in the cliffside fractal also gives a buff that downs you after 40 stacks yet is needed to complete the stage, what’s your point?
also the pools only appear when he starts firing his projectiles.
i figured it out after the second time fighting him, if i can do it, then everyone else can too, just use your BRAINS!

But if you get candy coated and THEN melee you do MUCH more damage to him. If EVERYONE does this, he goes down in minutes….not tens of minutes.

I can’t see pools of nuffin in dat zerg.
I can’t see pools of nuffin in dat zerg.
The pools actually form a good way out from the main zerg, but I agree it’s a visual mess.
To be honest, the first reaction I had to the pools was, “OMG! Gotta get out of this red ring of death!” I then realized there was no red ring and thought, “OMG! Another bug”.

I’m sorry, did you just make as if going to a waypoint and running back is not an option? Are you one of those people who dies at an event, and stays there on the ground, expecting to be res’d? If so you scale up the event without contributing anything, and you make it harder on everyone else. Waypoint and run back. Not just here, but in all events, ever.

This is my biggest problem I have with large scale events in general: lazy dead players. They refuse to re-spawn at waypoint because they are lazy. (please don’t ever tell me its because of the waypoint fee of 1.3 silver, that doesn’t even make a dent in your wallet) Great example of this is Tequatl the Sunless 2.0. People staying dead there are literally harming the event more than helping.

Pretty much this is the reason to blame.
There is nothing indicating for you to stand in it. Only trial and error which is the dumbest of all mechanics.
Once people got the word out how ever. People started standing in the candy pools.
Then the labyrinth horror comes running in and the slaughter begins.

it does not have a red circle. should be indication enough for anybody with half a brain.
In all boss encounters, the stuff they put on the ground is bad. That’s how we’ve been taught since day one. Red circle or not, its rather silly to expect players to think to stand INSIDE one of the boss’ ground effects. And I’m pretty sure I have more than half a brain.
