Well that made me think of an episode of QI.

If it was an epidose of QI, I’d tell you that in German, Kiel (pronounced “keel”) is a city by the sea, and Keil (pronounced “kyle”) means “wedge”.

It is thus very easy for Germans to get the ie/ei thing right.

Double ‘P’, single ‘S’.
:P

I grow even more disappointed each day from how frequently I see character names spelled incorrectly. I would think that someone would not mind the few seconds it would take to verify the correct spelling of a word before permanently using it in the naming of a character. Instead, there are far too many who cannot be bothered with this slight effort and they end up with an incorrectly spelled word permanently in their character’s name. Well, perhaps not permanent any longer due to the release of the Name Change Contract on March 26th, if they can be bothered to purchase it and use it and then manage to spell it correctly the second time.

@Pixelpumpkin: Proper names don’t have to follow grammatical rules, and you especially can’t apply the rules of English, such as they are, to a name that may or may not be of english derivation. But I definitely understand your overall chagrin.

doesn’t bother me in the slightest. but I have the name ‘Karin’. It is not remotely uncommon when I email someone that doesn’t know me personally and I sign the email ‘Karin’ that I get a response that says ‘Hello Karen’. It honestly happens more often than the name begin spelled correctly. And in theory they had just read it so you’d think they’d remember the spelling for those 30 seconds.

Many people can type pretty fast and are only thinking of the words not the spelling and are relying on muscle memory to a degree as they type things out. Not everyone meticulously spell checks before they hit the send button. Misspelling proper names is going to happen a lot especially if it’s a name they aren’t very familiar with.

When I see the ‘Hello Karen’ I just chuckle a bit and move on.

Heh ya, sometimes it can be weird. Though, with that example you can actually hear the differences. Their with an eh sound and Thief with an ee sound. What I hate is when the sounds are the same but the spelling is different or vice versa. An example is shoe and toe, one is an ew sound and one is an oh sound. Annnyway, English sucks.

Incorrect grammar grinds my gears too, but harassing and correcting others who aren’t asking for it is, in my opinion, worse. It’s a game, and people are here to have fun.

When I see stuff like this in chat it drives me up the wall:
Player 1: Anyone want to run Citadle of Flame later?
Player 2: Citadel*
Player 1: Oh sorry lol
Player 3: Sure, I’ll come along. So long as you don’t mind a Condition Warrior xD;
Player 1: Lol, it’s cool, I don’t mind. Anyone else wanna come along? LF2M , that efigy is so annoying!
Player 2: Effigy* And I guess so, I’m not doing anything.

No one wants to be corrected, especially not while relaxing and playing a game. No one even gains anything from the correction. It’s just annoying. Player 1 isn’t going to be eternally grateful because he now knows how to spell ‘effigy.’ Hell, it was probably just a typo from typing too quickly. It just makes Player 2 sound annoying and snooty.

Now the idiots who type in a way that isn’t coherent, that’s something else entirely. An example being, “lol yu gusy wnna run codf later im doin path1 probly a few tiems.” I would have to read that probably a few times just to get the general idea of what the person even wants, and someone needs to say something. He’s not going to get a party if no one knows that he’s looking for one, lol. Or where he wants to go.

TL;DR – I think people tend to be too harsh on typos. It’s not a big deal. If you can understand what’s being said easily, leave it be.

e_e

That rule is so not applicable for proper nouns (which Kiel is.)
It’s an English language rule, however proper nouns are very often loan words.
In this case, Kiel is likely the German version of the nautical term “keel”. There is a German word Keil, however, which is the German word for wedge.

But it does apply for this one instance and will allow people to remember how to spell her name.

I agree that the actual ruling of it is wrong, but for the masses that spell her name wrong, well… I don’t think they know or care about the difference. Just saying.
