Once in a while people try to corner the market on rare items like these. Just be patient. Eventually enough new sellers pop up that the person trying to corner the market simply can’t maintain his monopoly anymore, and the price falls back to the old equilibrium again.

IF it was a single person trying to manipulate the market, it was a fool with too much gold. This re-occuring bogus claim by players that some people with lots of gold are manipulating the precursor market is redicilous. Nearly all precursors didnt have a profit margin for flipping in months and have been more stable in price for over half a year than any common, fine or rare crafting mat.
Even t5 leather fluctuated more in price than precursors.

Not to mention a single person with enough money to do that, likely knows markets better than this. I assume it’s people rushing to get a Legendary with the patch coming out, especially those who struggled deciding whether to get it for their beloved Warrior or Guardian. Maybe 1 or 2 people trying to gain a monopoly. Patience will be the key here, though I’m sorry for those who only need 1 more component; the precurser. Patience can be difficult.
2x colossus on the TP now. Price is a bit higher than it was, but already down from what someone tried (899g to 700g). Someone just lost a lot of gold, gg.
Depending on the changes in the MF, prices of precursors might actually drop a bit after the patch. While (as has been mentioned in the blog) there will be no changes to chances of getting them from forge, the changes are supposed to be beneficial to Forgers in general – which may result in more tries for other things, and thus more incidental precursors being made.

Without a relative control on the supply, cornering a market is not possible.
I’m not sure how buying up all of them and HOLDING them is a good idea….shouldn’t you immediately list some of them at the new “higher” price? You could then potentially make a sale (to the unwary) and/or fool the new lucky players that got the new drop into listing at your higher price point (or just slightly undercutting it).
I’m sure I’m missing something here and that’s the reason I don’t play the TP (besides the fact that I don’t have 1000s of gold to high-roll with).

I checked buy price today after Colossus dropped for me.
I was shocked to see none on the TP and then saw that the buy price was 650g.
Last I looked it was moving from 500g to 550g.
I think if I was to sell it, I would be happy to sell to highest bidder cos 650g is good price for it now.
I think the new drops are either being kept by the finder(like me) or being sold to highest bidder rather than being put up for a higher price.
A few weeks back, 8 Sparks were on the market, cheapest was under 600g.
About two weeks ago, they all disappeared off the market, and all 8 were back on a few days later, cheapest was 750.
And today, they all disappeared again, and have popped back on the market for over 1000.
So, yeah, people are manipulating the market. Who knows how long till it comes back down.

Maybe the previous price was too low and the market is adjusting itself. Economics tells you that the market will find the level that people are wiling to pay and it will go there.

That’s only in a market with lots of buyers and sellers (and product, of course), is it not? (Not a rhetorical question, I’m really asking.)
As I understand it, it’s both supply and demand that sets price. There might be only one of an item supplied but if no one wants it then it won’t command a high price. High volume and high demand allow for the equilibrium to be reached faster but it still will be reached at low volume and/or demand, just slower.
It’s the announcement about legendarys becoming account bound. You can now make twilight and use it on all your characters, or make the incinerator and use it in both hands & use it on multiple characters. This announcement is causing a big demand for legendarys. So everyone’s buying them out faster then precursers can be farmed. As demand rises & supplies vanish, prices will rise.
Just as some info, a similar topic was opened during August last year concerning Dusk And The Legend. The interesting part are JS posts as he discloses, how much of those pres actually sold per day, which was an average of ~30, despite “someone buying up all the precursors and monopolizing the market”, draining all supply. Alot of people make the false assumption that supply on the tp equals trading volume.
Another fun fact: Dusk hasnt risen over 1000g in the 7 months since that screenshot was taken.

Maybe they have changed that but back in Oct/Nov when I was going for Juggernaut (and got it), 250 silver doubloons were going for 2.5-3g a pop it wound up being the singular most expensive part of my legendary.

I have > 180 SDs now. That’s mostly from farming JPs on 10-13 chars since mid/late December, so it’s pretty absurd … I think buying bags is a better way, but this “creates” SDs and buying bags just distributes them, so I figured I’d give it a try. If I combined all the gems I got (including silver jewelry salvage, which I’ve been doing), I could probably get another 30-50, but it’s a lot of really tedious clicking, an d I’m not going to buy the Colossus on the TP (could afford it by liquidating investments, but I’d rather wait and see what the hunt is like).
On the plus side, this makes mystic forge, JP, and recycler dailies trivial.
So every single colossus listed at ~730g disappeared and then more (or same) were listed at 890g within an hour because more people are making more gold?

Most likely as soon as the other precursors spiked, everyone that had theirs was either bought out on the spot, or relisted at higher price. Some, of course, were due to TP flippers.
The spike itself is the result of Wardrobe system – get one legendary, and have the skin for all your characters.

The Colossus is right on an edge where the demand is high enough to keep the price high from random drops / random forges, but not high enough to make direct forging worthwhile. The price is going to bounce around a lot compared to the ‘high volume’ precursors (Dawn/Dusk, Spark, Legend, Zap) that are worth forging directly.
