Question to the QA. How do you rate difficulty of T4 Candidate trail compared to mobs group inside Atherbalde retreat encounter?
I find they got more HP than the 5 man instance.Which is like half a champ usually have more than 2 of them that can spam daze and stun really deadly for 5 man group.
And throwing their numbers like they were normal mobs is too much. No matter what build to bring its no good to fight them head on.
If anyone has done t4 post patch killing 50 pirates, please post the video. If the only objective was to protect the treasure, that would be one thing, but you’re clearly meant to kill mobs. At the moment, keeping your team completely free of agro seems the only possible method. For a hoard mode game type, this seems to fall under the category of “not working as intended”.

Dude it was really easy to solo T1 and T2 normally (about 45-49 kills). I didn’t hear about camping at the plunderer spawns until I was doing T3 and T4
Anyways, I soloed T3 and T4 before the patch. I decided to go and see what all the fuss was about after the patch, so I decided to try to solo T3. I don’t really see much difference, actually. I was at full health and i failed at about 20 sec left because I ran out of treasure because I wasn’t paying attention to the other side’s spawns. All I had to do was run over to the other side, get some of my hp down to kill a plunderer, and I would’ve completed it.
Well… I have to say that I managed to solo it just now. I finished it with 1.000 supplies left, but at the end I was just avoiding being killed.
Thief almost full berserker with pistols, whip and stealth to avoid some aggro. The only problem with this build was the 11.000 health, but if you manage to avoid the aggro and just kill the robbers, no one should attack you.
You just need to keep watching the timer and count (20-22 secs once you kill a robber another one will respawn). At 5:30 appears the first robber in the right side, with two friends (stealth and wait for the robber to return).
It’s more a timing challenge than a combat one, in my opinion. The only problem with this event is that I don’t think that all the professions can complete it.

The scaling in these trials when you have a maximum party is right down ridiculous, especially in T4. I don’t think anywhere in the game it scales that way, so why all of a sudden bring it here? Maybe this is there way of introducing a new scaling system?
I’ve tried T4 several times with different groups, and came up short every time. It is just so overwhelming when it gets to the meaty part.
As a hardcore achievement junky, it pains me to think that I will not be able to succeed this one. And not for the lack of trying, just can’t seem to find the right composition, and groups are scarce too, not many people around who want to even try it anymore, and guesting has it’s limit, so I can’t join someone who is trying because I’ve reached the guesting limit for the day.
I don’t mind the amount of vets that spawn, it’s just the pool of hp they come with that really makes that difference.
I hope for my sake and for the sake of others, that something is done about it and not wait until a next living story event to fix this.

Why does the difficulty of everything in this game have to be synonymous with hp pools longer than the Great Wall of China?
Even with a whole group in berserker gear, everything above trash mobs takes so long to kill that it’s just tedious. I feel sorry for anyone who invested in other gear types, because they just keep adding horrible hp scaling.

This difficulty simply isn’t in line with… anything else in the game.
Yes we want difficult content in the game, but a little two week mini event that is harder than all top “end game” content? From the impossible task of getting gold, to people avoiding groups at all costs, it just feels broken, not difficult.
And again, people think differently and are on both sides of this, which is good! It makes for an interesting topic. That being said, I don’t see how a developer isn’t chiming in on this, or any posts on the topic. Not to make it easier or harder, just to join in on the conversation and give some insight / input as to what they are / were thinking and where they plan to go from here related to difficult content.
Agreed, however, my main issue apart from making the content not just difficult but next to impossible for someone like me who may have played for years but absolutely do not have pvp/twitch skills (I only play rangers, lol they’re usually the easiest class to play… ) so obviously am basically a newb to anything involving any form of pvp(that includes the Sprint event) to complete pretty much any of the meta achievements for any of their trumpeted “inclusive” events, unless they are part of the cliche that lives and breathes the pvp part of this game or are those that are talented at finding and using exploits before they are caught and patched, is that this EVENT is supposed to be for ALL players, old and new.
So to take a new player and level them up to 80 so they can take part is fine and dandy, but seriously, they then expect them to compete with players that have years of this game under their belt plus all the bells and whistles that that gives them, just to try and get the cool fluff from taking part and then pretty much telling them they don’t measure up so no fluff for you … umm what’s that English expression… oh yea, “bad form”.
I have no problem with making hard content for those who want it and even giving them special rewards, but isn’t that what the Fractals and Mists were all about? Those of us who don’t play that content will never ever get any of the cool stuff from those but when there’s a game wide event that is touted as all inclusive, I expect just that, to be able to participate in a meaningful way and NOT to get to 15/16 of the achievements and have to call it quits since I don’t have a clue or the talent to complete any of the rest. Oh and btw, putting in that new Sprint Achievement to run 15 more races… that was just mean… I did it thinking it would let me actually complete the Meta but guess what, it doesn’t count…. again, “BAD FORM”!

I’ve continued to solo t4 with 20+ kills with either my zerk warrior, valk thief or knight guardian. I never knew about the glitch with spawns til late, and have been able to farm it even after the “fix”. It’s just a little bit harder now.
I’ve also duoed it with guildies to help them get the achievement…
I’m not saying you need to l2p, but it is doable even now. Please don’t try it once and deem it unbeatable (or how ever many times you tried it).
I can post builds should you request it.

Until people speak with their wallets, ie do not support this kind of content with cash, this is what we will keep getting fed. The developer’s don’t have to make games that make us happy as long as we still pay them so until the divide gets so wide that “their” wallets start to hurt nothing will change.
Pre patch I was able to solo this on my warrior. Post patch not so much. A friend and I spent a lot of time trying various set ups to find a way to duo it. He found an old guide on how to 2 man it with thief warrior. This guide still works post patch. It involved the thief handling the right plunderer that first spawns at 5:30 with the warrior dealing with the other 2. It took us a few hours to get it down but we were able to beat it.
Our conclusion. You need a thief. We tried lots of combos with guard, mesmer, ranger, warriorx2. None of these seemed to work. But with a thief it worked. Still kitten hard though.
Oh and neither of us are built zerker. We had to rely on a lot of cc to get the plunderers down. I (warrior) used Longbow with axe/mace and killed the plunderers on the approach back. Open with longbow (with extended range) pop immobilize, blow all my cooldowns, immediately switch weaps so I could slow the plunderer with axe 3. Wail on them with axe if they got to the portal I’d knock them down with mace 5 before they started the animation. Then if I needed extra burst I’d use my saved up adrenaline ability for the kill.
My build of choice is 30 0 20 20 0 (not exactly a build tailor made for this encounter). and my gear is a mix of some zerker but mostly ptv gear. Yep PTV gear. So yeah my dps is something left to be desired but with the strat above, I still could take out the plunderers in a 2 man by myself.
I don’t know of anyone who beat it legit the way it’s suposed to be done: going in, killing the bad guys who steal treassure and killing and/or enduring the rest of mobs, attempting to do that results in failed event and armor repairs, the only way to do it before the patch had nothign to do with tactics, your skill with your character, your knowledge of combos, build you used or party composition, all of those only decided how soon your party wiped. To succeed you had to exploit AI flaws and event scripts to make it cake easy that’s not being good or skilled at GW2 that’s being gamey. After patch it is the same, only being gamey is harder.
Does this game need difficult content? YES
Is this the right type of difficulty?? NOPEI played GW1 for years, when DoA came out almost no one could beat it and those who did needed litrally hours to do just one out of 4 zones, later all 4 were done in 1 hour with better builds. But the difficulty wasn’t solved by jumping over edges, making mobs stupidity clear or abusing scripts, it was overcome with a few great team builds and tactics, that’s the kind of difficulty I want, not having to study the underlaying scripts of of a challenge to abuse the AI.
And yes I did both T4s before patch, my understanding for all those who have been caught by the “fix”, and I use the word “fix” loosely.
Actually that’s not true at all. I managed to solo it entirely differently than the exploit manner. In a few of my screens you can see me on the right side, fighting the mobs+plunderers.
I’m going to solo it again for the second time today in a bit because I didn’t get the screen shots the first time.

My own personal view of this having completed t4… it’s hard in the wrong way. It’s very RNG based and you need to abuse reset mechanics to complete it. I like challenging content, but I feel like a llama having to use these sorts of things to beat it. It’s just not any fun.

That said i believe if there is a meta reward that is of sufficiently little importance it should require a minimal number of achievements to acquire, but i also believe there should be a rarer and more prestigious item given to those who have the skills to pay the bills.

I’m more concerned about the issues actually granting the Achievement.
Personally, I finally managed to solo T4 Kiel today after about 15 tries over a couple of days.
So I get the event completion but not the achievement, even though I’ve already done T1-3 and have the relevant achievement / half-achievement.
Judging by other threads on this subject I’m not the only one.
Quite frankly I was ready to throw my keyboard out the window at that moment.
Having my hard work and moment of success pulled from under my feet was very frustrating, and I’m wondering whether I want to go to the pain of attempting a win on T4 again.
I posted a bug report but I don’t think ANet give out retroactive achievements for this kind of thing.

The even bigger problem than the difficulty of the trials, is taht the strategy required is utterly stupid. The context of the event, and the way to get silver/gold medals for it, and just common sense implies that you’re supposed to be able to actually fight off the pirates. You’re not supposed to just hide in the back and pick off the plunderers – but as far as I can tell it’s the ONLY strategy that works.
It’s just silly design – personally I think all of the pirates should chase you around instead of just standing idle while you kill the plunderers, and of course with vastly lower stats.
They really should show Anet devs or QA testers completing some of these things so we know it’s possible. I doubt a regular anet dev can actually do this.
As someone that’s done this solo I can guarantee you that you won’t see Anet, or QA testers doing this solo/group. I have serious doubts if any of them could do it solo before the patch, much less with a group before patch. As of right now this is incredibly hard, and requires luck to finish solo (though possible). I can’t imagine this nightmare as a group event.
Personally I think they should award the achievements to everyone, because what they did was create a group that got their achievements through exploits (at least a majority, I have screen shots proving I did it solo without the exploit)
It seems incredibly unfair to people just now trying it that didn’t get it done before the fix was put in.

Well, technically it CAN be done in a group, duno about SUPPOSED to be done with a group…I will agree it would be nice to do it with a group/friends without wanting to stab said group/friends for upping the difficulty so much.

Well, it’s much harder in a group than solo because of the mechanics of it and how they scale the encounter. But more to the point:

This is a hollow argument. Example: you order steak at the restaurant, and it is undercooked. You complain. Next week you order steak again, this time it’s overcooked. According to you, you cannot complain because last week you said the steak was undercooked. Meaningless.

If you haven’t tried it, why would you think it’s challenging?
See that makes no sense to me. If I do something and I post a video showing me doing it easily that’s great. If another person posts saying “oh it’s too hard”, and I respond with “it’s easy” then that makes sense. If a person posts “oh it’s too hard” and I haven’t done it, probably can’t do it, then I need to wait about expressing my opinion.
This content isn’t about difficulty. It’s about having to exploit to get through it. Then it was found out that there was an exploit, Anet decided to punish people. I imagine doing this as a group to be nearly impossible because Anet went for the lazy wow rip off way of making content hard “more numbers”. It was lazy then, and it’s even lazier now when we see what other companies are doing.

T4 and T3 is clearly broken. We are required to get 50 kills to get gold medal yet only way to complete event is to avoid combat as much as possible. We are supposed to guard treasure yet only way to win is to abandon it. No one completed the event the way it was supposed to be completed with gold medal. The only way to complete is to use a loopholes, to abuse lose agro mechanics and avoid combat while going after looters only.
I would love to see video of anet devs who designed it completing it in a group of 5 and geting gold medal.
Well, I knew there would come one living world achievement one day that I wouldn’t be able to get in time.

Tier 4 is not impossible but (maybe) a little too hard, especially for certain classes.
The problems with the design as it is now are:
- It encourages solo-play while it is presented as a group event.
- It encourages (is actually only possible through) non-fun behaviour such as avoiding enemies and playing with aggro range.
Possible fix in design (off the top of my head):
- Spread out the spawn points across the map.
- Victory is accomplished by surviving all minutes.
- Groups spawn from the spawn area and attack the players. These groups should be similar to dungeon packs in power.
- If a plunderer successfully takes gold and gets away, additional enemies spawn and/or score/treasure/chance of skins is reduced.

You missed MY point, I WAS able to do 16 achievements(just as the devs had promised when they said I could play this game my way… ie. no pvp), as listed in the section of achievements for this event, however, someone decided that one of the achievements listed would not count for the meta and now it’s my fault?

Fine whatever. I just made a video on my first T2 attempt (a.k.a. no wiping, reset, or whatever other cheap tricks you think I use to cheat on T2) and I have 48 kills. Gimme a day to upload cuz I’m compressing and its like 4gb in size (why does fraps always have such large files?)

I wouldn’t mind the fight but the Foes are NOT resetting properly during fight!. They jsut stop int eh middle of the field and don’t move.
So you doing it on the spawn points on the right rather than the spawn points of the left makes a whole lot difference? I don’t see any meaningfull difference to be honest, you still can’t take a 5 man team and do anythign else than stay on the fringes of the fighting zone “exploting” AI limitations.
1. The candidate trials achievements are available for a limited time.
2. The glitch that was fixed on July 26 made this event a joke.
Why did you guys have to fix this glitch now that completing the event is almost impossible? It’s not fair that a large number of people finished candidate trials with so little effort and trouble and now I (and many other people like me) have to spend so much time on it.
If you guys want to release bugfixes, make bugfixes for things that aren’t available for a limited time. Or make bugfixes for things that aren’t nearly impossible without them.

It’s not fixed. The two newly added vets are bugged in that they have an extended aggro range, are ignored by friendly NPCs, and do not go away after the event is over. They clearly don’t belong.
Before, it was too easy. Now, the added bugged enemies.

If you haven’t been reading the thread, he was posting about how a party wiped 4x before they finished T2 and how he doesn’t believe people can do the trials the correct way.
There’s a video ‘guide’ on a thread here. 3man party.
Every one of them has a Legendary, and Ascended quality gear.
They state they wiped 4x just in the making of the video, T2.
That’s complete bullkitten.
So if someone who doesn’t have ‘Veteran’ status in the game (i.e. Time long enough to have fully decked in Ascended with LEGENDARY weapons….

So don’t get that achievement. In order to get the full “Support Evon Gnashblade”, for example, you need 6 achievements. You could do:
- I Like Evon! (this one is very easy)
- Gnash All the Blades (do a Daily, also very easy)
- Gnashblade: Dungeon Runner (do a dungeon, it’s easy to find a group for at least one)
- Gnashblade: Maw Mulcher (do Fractal level 2 and kill the Jade Maw easily even with a PUG)
- Gnashblade: Direct Support (do just tiers 1 and 2 of of the candidate trials)
- Gnashblade: Homeland Support (do low level events in Ascalon)
All those are simple, most are very easy.
If you think any player should be able to get all achievements in the game, I’m not sure you understand what the word “achiement” means. ArenaNet should reward skill more than they do, not less.

Is it “skill” that people were able to complete the achievement before they made it more difficult?
Is it still an achievement at that point?

i got it done on Kiel pre-patch, though didn’t experience the “bug” where guys don’t spawn. i KNEW i should have done Evon’s as well the same sitting.. but i decided to go to bed. lol. woke up next day, saw patch noets and i already knew “awww yeah, i’m gonna miss out on this achieve.”
whether i get it or not, i don’t mind.. my issue is more.. the “fix”. i personally feel it’s not working as intended. as it was made more difficult then it was intended to be. i.e. it was workign fine previously as it still took some challenge if it doesn’t bug out. but now the mobs leash way longer, more spawn as well seemingly. that’s just from anecdotal experience though. i may have missed something as i didn’t try it too many times post-patch.
it’s this trend of missing then overfixing which causes issues for me. i thought this was really fun actually! and does push your solo build or group synergy to the limits. but you have to spec and plan for it. or at least think about it.

again, “over-fixing”.
i played it pre-patch without the bug (killed every spawned plunderer i saw, in T4, spawned from all locations). now though? T4 has more vet mobs than before when i didn’t even trigger the bug, and their leash is amazingly long. some even follow me into the water. :///

yep. timed spawns. bugged spawns. extended aggro-seemingly (they never sued to follow me into the water, where pre-patch, at the same spot, they lost aggro). and spawns that don’t patrol the treasure. they just sit near the spawn points. lol.
and oh, knocking mortar mobs away for “safety” doesn’t work anymore either. they were knocked away (at least 600?) and mortars still fire unmanned lol. whether it was intended for them to be able to be knocked away or not and run back to their mortars, meh. i guess they added asura tech to teh mortars so they could fire unmanned. ://

again, i’ve stated this many times, so donno why i keep doing it but.. i did T4 pre-patch without bug. was challenging and fun. post-patch, the mobs are timed now, and seemingly MORE spawn, extended aggro. i could leash to the exact same spot pre and post patch, and pre they’d leash, but psot, they’d follow me into the water, etc etc.
it wasn’t just a “fix” imho, it was an over-fix. as per usual. why not just bring it back to the level it was INTENDED to be? instead of increasing the difficulty because some people exploited an exploit.

Alright. So far this is the only way todo it.. Although if you make a mistake, you’re dead.

To bad that vid is pre-patch, just like every other successful video in this thread. I completed T4 a dozen times before patch – solo, duo and trio. I’ve completed it once solo after, with a ton of luck and class actually capable of it. This content is not possible for all classes in its current state.
So does it matter if the vid is pre-patch?
I completed kiel/evon t4 on the first time using this strategy post patch, and it worked great. Still had about 1500/2000 supply at the end
