22 Chests opened, nothing unique
I spent around 6000 gems, and i am not complaining.
From another thread in this forum:
250 Candy Corn + 10 Crystalline Dust + 40 Elonian Wine + 100 of X Rare Halloween Crafting Material = Gift
Gift of Souls + 250 Orichalcum Ingot + 100 Charged Lodestone + 20 Glob of Ectoplasm = Staff
Gift of Spiders + 250 Orichalcum Ingot + 100 Destroyer Lodestone + 20 Glob of Ectoplasm = Short Bow
Gift of the Moon + 250 Orichalcum Ingot + 100 Corrupted Lodestone + 20 Glob of Ectoplasm = Shield
? This about right?
…that’s ridiculous. Who are they trying to market these weapons to? Who is going to sink that many resources into weapons that are really only passably cool looking, especially compared to the BLC offerings?
Bwahahahahaha ……… WHAT!!?!?!?! LOLOLOLOLOL. Ok yeah, good luck with that anet.
Heh, now everyone is feeling the pain I did when I opened 350+ chests a month ago to get an endless mystery tonic (got it on the second to last chest miraculously). At least gems were more affordable then though…
Endless Petrification Tonic
ArenaNet will probably come out ahead on this and on everything else. Whoever thought up gems for gold is especially fiendishly clever.
MMOs need numbers (people don’t like to play deserted games) and of course companies want to make money off their MMOs. The whole system is set up so that rich and poor can both play (thereby populating the world), and then the rich get directed toward the cash shop as often as possible to squeeze what many consider to be maximum enjoyment from the game (pixel wealth and power) and to reduce the parts of MMOs that no one likes (boring repetition in order to gain maximum wealth and power).
These Halloween skins are the least of your worries. You should be worrying about how much directing toward that cash shop we’ll see in the future with changes in drop rates and game mechanics.
~ArenaNet
80+ chests, no Halloween items.
To the posters insulting people who bought keys and expected an item:
We aren’t talking about the US economy or housing market. We’re talking about a stupid video game where people want to run around with a pumpkin rifle. Based on colorful advertising and good faith, a lot of people paid some money with the understanding that doing so would give them a “chance” at those items.
That “chance” is being proven to be aggressively small. Different people came into this with different expectations, but I do think its safe to say that the cost of keys, coupled with the tiny percent chance of a skin, equates to a more cynical policy than fans of Anet anticipated.
Fair enough. Lesson learned. Personal responsibility also means licking your wounds and moving on. Those that feel they got misled, will be less likely to give Anet cash like that on impulse.
In my opinion, that’s bad business for Anet, and less fun for the players who weren’t so lucky. It didn’t have to be that way, and I don’t think there is ANY harm in lambasting Anet for this mess. They can, and should do better by their players.

the key words are:
“We’re talking about a stupid video game where people want to run around with a pumpkin rifle. Based on colorful advertising and good faith, a lot of people paid some money with the understanding that doing so would give them a “chance” at those items."
needless to say that based on the amount of posts by angry players expressing their emotions, a loss of trust in the ANet brand has been sustained.
That is just not good, regardless of whether GW2 players do have restraint, responsibility, etc…or not.
Gandara
opened like 35 chests and got nothing low or not thats just a money grab by Anet shame i like GW2 but not going to ever open a Black lion chest for any thing ever again. Talk about betraying the trust of your player bass yes i mad
I bought 10 keys and got nothing. This whole gambling business model really stinks. Usually I feel pretty good about micro transactions because I’m supporting a good company. Today, I just feel like a fool.
It is bad form from Anet for sure. They keep driving people away. When I saw chance I read no chance.
Since the fist ban for chat and name use Anet has gone straight down hill and hasnt stopped.
They blame the gamer for thier lack of security – no decoder or anything and were warned.
Condescending attitudes from staff towards gamers. Then the all out attack on legit gamers with DR and Karma reductions while doing nothing against botters and exploiters.
Not to mention the horrible state of WvW and Orr or even dungeons. They then and go and burn another bridge with the people who support this game with money. You got my 60 box money but you wont see anything else from me until things are fixed.
This just adds another reason not to support Anet.
TLDR – Even in Vegas the Whales are Comped with free stuff.
No offense, but Arenanet isn’t forcing any of you to buy the keys, if you do, then there’s a random chance to get the skin. If they gave everything out for nothing what would be the point?
Don’t like what you’re getting, why don’t you stop buying keys then?
15 keys + 3 I had, opened 26 total, got nothing. I don’t care too much, just know that I will never buy keys again because I learned that drop rates are so low that its a colossal waste of resources.

The thing is that there are players that have spent upwards of $50 and got NOTHING to show for it. A rare is a rare and should stay a rare, however when you take an existing item in game like the Black lion Chest, and promote opening it for a holiday and to receive holiday exclusive items, then the chest needs to have holiday exclusive items. That does NOT mean every chest needs to contain a rare weapon skin, but at least a trick or treat bag or piece of candy….honestly what I think would be win win for both Anet and players that spent a ton of cash would be a solution like this…
BLCs should drop 5-10 Candy Corn (or some other temporary currency) that is only accepted by a special Halloween Vendor NPC that also sells the weapon skins for maybe 200 or 300 hundred Candy Corn Pieces. That way the people that blew major bucks for keys don’t feel like they did it all for nothing and are rewarded with something NEW that they could have ONLY have obtained from opening chests during this special event. Toss in a rare chance to get some of the other Holiday Event items for sale for gems like the costumes, hats, and minis and It would be win win imo. Anet gets the revenue and players get to feel like they are at least working toward their goal of getting their skin each key they use.
40 chests, no event items, rather disappointing considering that’s real money
and then I see the recipes and wonder why i bother being a collector at all, they are not something an average person can get
100$ spent on 8000 gems… 100 chests opened and not a single skin.
Am I disappointed? Absolutely, but I get that this money was spent at my discretion and wasnt stolen. Scammed? maybe.
For future events when they do things like this posting the likelyhood of a drop or even giving people an idea that these will be ultra rare drops would be appreciated.
First and last time I will spend another cent on this game.
The least they could have done is add a mid-level rarity of items, no weapons but town clothing only.
Things that wouldn’t be all that uncommon to see, but people would still like it a lot more than getting nothing Halloween related at all.
And throw in lots and lots of silly candy, small fun items of whatever kind, consumables, etc…
Give every chest a small consolation prize, a silly nothing that at least proves it’s a Halloween chest you opened.
Do these 2 and the complaints about not getting the real rares would have been much less.
I have no intention of trying to get any Halloween items. Reason being, almost every mmo i have stopped playing in the past was over horrible drop rates. So I think they just really implemented this wrong. Its like the got confused with typical high desirable items drop rates and people spending money. Here is what they should have done:
Gave a gem option that has a very low chance to get any items and make sure that is known up front, a cash option in which people can just outright buy them for cash, or a pure farming option maybe even a quest.
I think its pretty clear they dropped the ball on this one big time. Ha I’m at work, getting IM’s from angry guildmates over this.
I’m really surprise that people are getting “OMG your money kitten us” Dude….play MegaTen. Those are for realz MONEY kittenS. But I learned my lesson with them don’t gamble. And they implemented rare drops before in GW1. Does the Canthan New Year Ring a bell? You can farm a lot with questing to get the rare mini. Not 100% chance you’ll get it. Not to mention from what I know from my fiancee, these skins won’t last long.
I don’t feel entitled at all. I take full responsibility for foolishly getting caught up in the moment and wasting my hard-earned cash for a “chance” to win pixels. A hefty mistake on my part and an expensive lesson learned. As a result, though, I’ll spend less money on the game in the future than I otherwise would have, and I’ll certainly never purchase another key. A huge thanks to Anet for reminding me to be more careful with my cash. The Halloween event looks awesome. I look forward to experiencing what’s yet to come.
Most of us are not upset because we feel entitled to the goods. Please go back and look at the email from Anet that states that the chests have a chance to drop a holiday skin.
A chance (meaning rare chance? super rare chance?) Neither word was used meaning a reasonable chance. Yes RNG is fine with fake money. RNG with REAL money with low chances and not being stated upfront is not acceptable.
I am simply stating they were not fair and upfront on the drop chances. Had they stated a 1/50 chance or a 1/100 chance or 1/1000 chance to drop a skin, then all these people would not be complaining. They were not upfront and so many people felt duped.
When they do these things they need to be very upfront about chances so that people understand the system so they don’t feel duped.
I traded my gems for gold instead, at the highest you got 89s /100 gems, I’m happy with that
Only one thing needed to be done differently imo, they should have made clear that the chances were very low. The way they advertised the event REALLY lead players to believe these drops from chests wouldn’t have such a low drop rate.
That is my only complaint, and maybe they didn’t do it on purpose but it makes them seem greedy and sketchy.
Other than that I don’t think it is wrong for the drops be so rare, at all. That is for them to decide, but people should have a chance to know what they are getting into.
Makes me sick. Anet chose greed over its players.
kitten me once shame on you, kitten me twice shame on me.
There won’t be a second time.
Hey, I spent 50 bucks on keys and got the scythe and some lame shoulders. I disagree with how anet changed the return rate on chest keys so you have to buy more. The gem to gold / gold to gem chart and exchange rates are also BS. However, i understand this is how anet makes their money.
To those saying they were not up front about the drop chances and its not fair, I would like to welcome you to the world of advertisement and commercialism. This is absolutely “fair”. Is it the correct thing to do to the player base? I don’t think so. However, they are able to do this. Saying its not fair sounds like a 3 year crying about how they didn’t get what they want for Christmas (ie GW2 skin).
Im not trying to troll or tell you your opinion is wrong, but you are obviously going about this the wrong way.
This thread has over 24k views, amazing!
The system is fine. Chests are a gamble not a guarantee. Las Vegas exists with this principle in mind yet you rarely see people besmirching the city due to losses at the casinos. It’s expected you’re gonna lose so if you do win it’s exciting!
Feed them and they multiply.
Please do not feed them.
This is really a shame to see all this result, not including myself. I opened about 40 chest and I am not going to advance further until I hear any announcement from ANet telling me is not a bug and is working as it is. I am not born with a wealthy family and work my blood sweat and tears for the cash and not going to blow it if the chance are randomly draw in an odds of 6 (weapon skin) + 3 (armor skin) out of 23 (is only the list on wiki and it could be more) possible junk, so the ratio is 9:32 … Is that justifiable?
Simple fact is, they are swindling the bulk of the player base. Is it legal? probably, fair? debatable.. smart business? In the short run yes, but long term they have chopped their own legs off by doing this.
“possible junk, so the ratio is 9:32 … Is that justifiable?”
Pretty sure the odds are much worse than that.

The system isn’t fine if it truly is considered gambling, since it’s pretty much illegal in almost all of the US and i’m sure other places as well. And yes, plenty of people besmirch Vegas, it is the city of sin after all.

Seriously man, the illegal argument is not gonna pan out for ya.
You guys should probably read this more carefully: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/events/halloween-2012.
“Halloween with the Black Lion Trading Company
Available from October 22 to November 5” in the header.
And just below:
The Black Lion Chest is getting a spooky upgrade for Halloween. Between October 23 and November 5 each Black Lion Chest you open has a chance to give you one of six exclusive Halloween-themed weapon skins!
If you used all of your keys on 22nd, no wonder you did not get any of those skins, as they weren’t available at that time.

GG anet.
I shall not be buying any more gimmick rng cash shop junk from you guys any more. This whole blc stunt really put a f2p korean mmo taste in my mouth. I did not think your company would go this route and I will not be recommending this game to anyone.
I hope this back fires and that so many people open enough chest that your booster sales go down for months.
I understand that this is a company with employees that need to be paid; however, a certain amount of care should be used in dealing with customers who are supporting the game past the box purchase. I take full responsibility for my actions obviously. I opened around 40 chest with nothing to show for it. Either way, I am sure you guys will find this type of gimmick unsustainable and change it next time around.

Im thinking I will just report my CC stolen, get my cash back. I win, they lose. And if they ban me, I will find another MMO. Dime a dozen.
If it was a gamble, than Anet gambled and lost.
Now way in hell are they going to sell this many chests again, ever…
They made a quick buck, they have plenty of supporters calling zeverybody who wasted money fools.
But they did lose trust here, a lot of it.
And for those who might not know: the reputation of this game is not very good, outside of these forums (and even here…).
GW2 isn’t reviewed all that good on other MMO forums (not related to a specific game).
Many things are critised.
Heck, even the live streams can’t draw viewers like they should.
In this light, the general reputation of GW2 in the world of MMO’s, this latest money grabbing event, isn’t going to go down well.
From now on when mentioning GW2 outside of these forums, expect it to be called out for a money hungry Korean (or whatever) MMO.
You might agree with this or not.
But it’s a very bad thing for the game. Reputation is everything for a MMO.
GW2 got big on the reputation of GW1, just to show how reputation matters a lot for the sales of a game.
Anet had a great standing with it’s playerbase. today they insulted the part of their base most willing to spend money on their game.
(as others have pointed out as well, and got equal flame for it as I will)

Well, 9 out of 32 items that CAN drop from the chests are event items, but that doesn’t seem to have anything at all to do with the drop rates of the event items. Plenty of folks opened dozens of chests, and only a small handful received event items. The drop rate appears to be abysmally low for them, which is fine, but sort of discourages folks like myself from spending money on it. I generally won’t spend more money on a gamble than I would to directly purchase items that I’m hoping to gain from that gamble, and I’ve met that quota.

Wrong look at when companies do things like Win this or that… what do they have to state???
Chances. They have to state chances. Why because you are leading people to buy a product for a chance to win so you have to inform them of the chance. Did Arenanet do that? No, they simply stated a chance which means a much more reasonable chance then they actually put in.
I get rare chances in chests when fighting a Dragon. Yes it’s a rare chance for a sweet skin to drop. That I get and that is fair. They don’t have to say what the chance. However… when they lead groups of people on to buy a item that has a chance to have something in it… they better put the percentage in there.

Check the dev tracker, it was stated after downloading the update it’s good to go.
“Whose Charr is this?”- “Ted’s.”
“Who’s Ted?”- “Ted’s dead, baby. Ted’s dead.”
Thanks to Anet for reminding me to be more careful with my cash, you burned me once and will not burn me again!! I never got any email and nothing in spam folder/s. If this is how events are going to be going forward then Anet can count on even less money from the gem store since players already have a bad tatse in their mouth.

Wrong man. See what’s in bold? That’s called an assumption. An assumption you made that happened to be incorrect. You cant call foul on someone because you made an incorrect assumption bro, thats on you.
I had to buy keys which was around 35 USD? Opened up over 40 chest and got pauldrons for light armor (I wear heavy). Despite that i love this Halloween event (Good job Anet) i learned a lesson to not ever do that again.
The Goonie who wasn’t in the movie.
I think some of the anger towards Arenanet is misplaced; however, I also think the players who are upset towards those who are angry is also somewhat misplaced. While Arenanet did not specify the chances so it was in fact an assumption and thus seemingly a bad investment to get a bunch of keys expecting it to be rewarded, I can see how the assumption, “Opening chests will be rewarding” manifests. The fact is people aren’t being rewarded. Did they have a chance? Yes. Whether it is too small is one debate, whether they should have outright stated that the probability was very low to prevent the rage and loss of players is another. It is kind of tough to sincerely say that people who have dedicated a lot of gems to this and come up with nothing have been treated fairly, and this also means casuals are simply not going to get them except an incredibly small percentage (though of course their demand is lesser than the dedicated player).
The challenge Arenanet faces is how they can make the experience rewarding for people without having to pander to the whims of players and cheapening the rewards themselves. This balance is going to be hard to achieve, and won’t please everyone, but it’s not possible to please everyone. We can try to cause the greatest amount of happiness and mitigate the most amount of annoyance nonetheless. People are dedicating gems expecting a balanced reciprocity with the chests, and this is a fair expectation in my view (getting things equal to their pay). The solution I personally feel is best is lighten up the difficulty of getting the skins, not too much, but enough for people to feel like they have a chance. After all, after this holiday event, the skins will no longer be available from chests, the rarity can be acquired from that realization. So the exclusivity of it is not from having been lucky enough to get it, but being lucky enough to participate in the event! This should make people appreciate the event more and at the same time keep the pride of the unique skins intact.
To word it another way: give those who have attended and chipped in to the party some party favors that they can then show off to those who either didn’t chip in or missed out on the good time, making those who didn’t chip in or show up want to do so next time!

As fail of an mmo as it was, look to swtor for the correct way to do an event like this. running the event daily nets you costume pieces that are bound to that toon. Other items like saber crystals and pets can be purchased from an event vendor for special event currency and sold on the ah for profit. Now I get that gw2 is free to play and requires income from some source other than subs.
You have four basic problems here, one the cosmetic items are so rare they command exorbitant prices in the ah. Two the crafted versions require mats and time that are going to command a stupidly high price to buy on the ah. Three the gem to gold exchange rate is a joke. Four you have now soured your playetbase on spending money on your game anymore.
I work a good job, I have some disposable income to throw around, last night I blew about 30 dollars on gems to open some 40 or so lockboxes. didnt get crap. so now youve basically killed any goodwill and potential future sales with me forever.
Lets play what if now. what if those 40 boxes yieldes 3 or 4 skins, even if a majorty of those skins I couldnt use immediately, id be very temped to bust out my credit card and keep making purchases of gems so I could get all the vanity items for each of my current and future toons. When all is said and done you would have had me for probably a bit over a hundred bucks easy.
A feeding frenzy like this from me every 3 months or so rounds out to about 400+ a year. Thats far better than 15 a month. Even better is if the skins were on sale on the gem store for around 10 bucks each. all the shoulder armors plus all the weapon skins and again, people would easily drop 100 bucks to unlock and purchase evrything. As is yeah, you suckered a few people with this nonsense but I doubt its gonna go over as well for your next event.
way to gimmick your playerbase and thin out your die hard supporters who WERE willing to throw gobs of money at you IF you played nice. Not so much anymore.
sorry for the mistakes, posting from a smartphone
I came here to see if it would be worth it to buy some gems. I guess I got my answer…
I knew this would happen first thing when I read about the black lion chest update, I saw this happening to many games I liked, played and eventually quit. Gambling is becoming a part of online gaming nowadays, items with limited period as well…just to keep you spending your money on a Free For Life product…I know they need it to keep things going but even without these gambling boxes players are spending a lot, not to mention what most of us know about quantity of copies that were sold even before beta start.
Its greed wherever you go….just greed. I was defending GW2 claiming that it will never turn out as other greedy games out there, guess I was so very mistaken…this is just disappointing…

+1
I’ve spent twice that for nothing.
Arena.net, you seem to have quite effectively destroyed the good will of hundreds of players, as well was taught everyone that the #1 takeaway from this event is:
Never, under any circumstances, buy keys from the gem store
I have to think that was not the intended goal. So let’s look at what went wrong.
First of all, let’s dismiss the silly argument that the drop rate should be low because these are supposed to be ‘rare’ and ‘unique’ items. Hogwash. Nothing bought with cash is rare or unique or in anyway deserving of ‘legendary’ status. The same goes, only more so, for items that you got randomly out of a bag without having to accomplish anything.
If you want items to be rare, you make them hard to obtain. You don’t make them trivially easy for some people to obtain and almost impossible for everyone else to obtain. Moreover, what made you think that having halloween costumes be a ‘rare drop’ on halloween was going to be a popular decision?
People don’t like feeling as though they have been screwed over by the RNG. There is nothing they can do to combat the RNG. People hate feeling as though they dropped $50 on your game and got nothing to show for it. You seem to have quite effectively convinced many people who were previously quite happy to spend $$ on this game to never give you another dime.
Always reward the players with some tangible progress towards their goal
You handled this all wrong. Instead of getting a full costume out of a bag 1% of the time, you should have gotten random components for crafting a costume out of EACH bag. The former plan means someone can buy 100 chests and be screwed by bad luck out of getting anything. The latter means everyone who buys chests is happy.
Additionally, you should have just put the costumes available outright in the gem store for, say, $3-$5 each. League of legends, another F2P game, routinely introduces new holiday/special skins, and that’s about what they go for.
Occasionally they’ll introduce a really legendary skin which I think goes for about $20.
These are all guarantees, by the way. You give them your money, you get a skin. Most people are quite happy with this arrangement.
The way you guys at arena.net are quite happy to soak some poor soul for $50 and give him literally nothing in exchange makes you look like the worst sort of soulless money grubbers. I don’t think that’s what you are, but appearances matter.
If a person dropped $20 on gems to by keys, the odds that they pull out at least one costume should be pretty astronomically high. I’d say that should be the case for even $10.
It’s all a question of where you draw the line. People expect things like this in the microtransaction model, but you have to price things appropriately. If you offer horse armor for $1, people will happily buy it. If you offer it for $100 people think you’re selfish exploitative kitten.
The way they were advertised is still wrong, even if I got some random Halloween tonics or even candy corn (specific things tied to the EVENT) I wouldn’t have cared so much blowing keys on it, but when you get the same kittening things you would have gotten without the event you feel terrible. Like many others I will not be messing the the chests ever again.

QFT
I would have gladly dropped 100+ dollars on this event if the initial chests I had open gave me even a hint of halloween weapon skins. Sad to say anet has shot themselves in the foot as it pertains to my future purchases. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.
lol. Let’s see…
Keys drop in the open world.
Keys can be bought with gems. Should I think the chance of getting an item per chest should be upped because I decided to buy 10,000 keys…no. Everyone has the same chance no matter how you decided to obtain keys. The way posters are making it sound, “I spent such and suckittens and should have something from the event to show for it, where is my rare?”
Now, with that said…the odds during this event to obtain more event items from the chest in general should be upped to promote the feeling of the event is how I feel just for the sake of the event. Not because I bought keys during this week.
And for those who paid for keys and used them before the patch, hmmm…L2Read is all I can. Reading is fundamental.
The event has 4 acts with a likely grand finale which will probably have something for everyone.
