Every group I go in for the Tower, I hear people complaining about the presence of both Norn and Charr. I usually just ignore them, but when they start to complain over and over again, it can not only get frustrating, it’s actually a form of cyberbullying.

I play a pretty short female Norn, and I’ve taken my helm/shoulders off and my armor’s not bulky. So luckily I haven’t been the victim of this (as far as I know).

But this is really starting to frustrate me and I’ve seen it get pretty bad… name calling, trying to kick them out, constant verbal bullying. Come on, really?

I understand the frustration, and I think most of norn/charr players do. We didn’t create them just to piss you off. How were we supposed to know that this is how it was going to be?

I was surrounded by three really large male norns, and I could not see my character. But I jumped, and I played, and I made it pretty far… I fell because I wasn’t paying attention.

Be frustrated all you want, but please stop using verbal abuse.

I wasn’t complaining about “complainers”. I was asking that people didn’t just slash out at these people when they can’t help it. Anyway… I apologize either way.

well create a new character that doesnt have abulky body and do it. puzzle is account shared achievement so both u and others dont get anything to complain.

It is not your fault, but the presence of large models makes it significantly harder for smaller model players to learn the event.

Basically just saying that it’s possible to do it even if you’re blocked. =P and I’m really not good at JPs.

I would gladly change to a human character, because you’re right about the achievement being account-bound. But the gear is soulbound.

So perhaps an easier solution would be to make the gear account bound? Because as of this moment, I do want the gear for my norn.

I had exactly the same issue all last night , it got to the point of non stop harassment asking me to leave every group i joined.

Sufficient to say i ended up reporting a handful with the in game report feature.

It actual felt like being in WoW , to those saying create an new char the boots you get from the clock tower are soul bound so that is not a viable option.

If you have an issue with chars or Norns tell Anet not Abuse fellow players.

I don’t see the problem with large character frames within this event. I had a norn running side by side throughout most of it and it was easy if you took yourself more into the position on the screen instead of focusing at “Oh there is my character, HI ME!” It isn’t increased in difficulty because of character models, it is the fact that you want to look at your character, which isn’t a great plan anyways as it slows you down. I am a human, and I even get lashed at for having a “big character model” when mine is average height and skinny.

Actually he did contribute to your thread. He provided you with an alternative solution, albeit in a rude manner, to your problem that relies less on the good graces of other players. Just because someone disagrees with an OP or has something less than pleasant to say doesn’t mean it should always be immediately dismissed as useless.

Aside from that, I support your stance against verbal abuse in the Clocktower. I don’t play a Charr or Norn and I haven’t seen any verbal abuse myself, but I can guarantee you I wouldn’t stand for it if I did. I hope this thread achieves what it is setting out to accomplish.

I will have to say this… the CHARRS (or REALLY huge male Norns) are the biggest problem during the event.

Before I continue with my comment, I did manage to beat the Charrs and Norns by getting ahead before they did, but:

They do BLOCK the field of view, very easy to misinterpret a jump or even see a platform available to land on because of this big oaf of uselessness blocking your view.

I will admit I did complain about two Charrs, once or twice, at the time about being so huge, after a while they left, not because of me but they got frustrated at the Clocktower)… after they left, I found it so much easier to do the jumping puzzle and eventually, got it done without them there.

Now, just thinking through this, ArenaNet really cannot (and will not) cater to the minority in this situation. If a Charr/Norn is in your way, deal with it.
I eventually did, I even went back to re-do the entire clocktower and there was Charrs/Norns there, and I STILL MADE IT.

I can’t actually do this event due to comp complications but the way it sounds… well, do you have to jump together as a group? Can’t you just have the smaller characters jump to the next spot first then the bigger characters or vice versa?

Nope, it has to be done together, and it picks your group for you.

Well I still say to try and get it where you jump from shortest to tallest or vice versa. I mean from the vids I’ve seen people aren’t jumping simultaneously to every spot some a second or two later. So I’d still say try and jump starting from shortest to tallest.

I played a human (and did beat the tower in ~1.5 hours or so). And yeah, the constant complaining (and bullying) about Charrs/Norns totally ruined my enjoyment. (If they were going to complain at all, they should have more appropriately directed their anger at Anet, the developers of the game content).

With regards to characters blocking views, it was never a huge issue in my opinion. Furthermore, visual blocking can be done by any of the other players, not just limited to charrs/norns. If charrs/norns didn’t exist, they’d probably still be complaining about other ppl.

Honestly if my artificer could craft ‘shrinking’ potions, I’d so mail them to the norms who have their crotch resting on my character’s shoulders, and kitten all in ma screen T.T

It’d be hilarious if the Mad King just transformed everyone into chickens for the duration of the puzzle. Then there’s be no complainers about the body blockers

Just ignore them, my main is a Charr Warrior and i won’t change character just to please others.

I wonder if people can do this in their town clothes. I could totally see someone turning to the mad king outfit and scaring everyone off the steps for an unobstructed view for themselves.

No I tried that once, and when you are taken in, it goes back to your combat armor.

Argh, I’m jealous. I want to this event.

For people having trouble seeing, your character remains in the middle of your screen. It’s not (all that) important to be able to physically see your character. Know where your center of mass is. It’s harder but doable.

Agreed. It’s definitely annoying the first few times you’re attempting it, but after a while it becomes almost like muscle memory and you can make the first few jumps even while completely obscured. All of the platforms in the beginning are fairly large so there’s a pretty good margin of error. Later the platforms start becoming smaller and thinner, but the ranks are usually thinned out by then so it’s no longer an issue.

It’s also worth mentioning that Charr have their own problems when doing this JP. It’s much, MUCH harder to judge distances as a Charr due to their awkward four-pose jumping animation. (Tip: Your hind legs are always the “safe spot”. Aim with those.) Despite completing my other four characters relatively easily, it took me more than an hour to beat it on my Charr.

To person who posted: Press Control-Shift-H and your UI goes away. You don’t need it for the puzzle and will no longer have to see anything anyone is typing. Do the same command your UI back when you finish.

Joining in to give some love to the abused char and norn, I’ve been with a group of char and personally I’ve not found them to be blocking anything , if I’ve failed it’s mostly been through my own failure :P

The ignore function is there for a reason. It’s attached to your friends list. Games implement this so that you can block out what people are saying, stopping you from being subjected to what you deem as ‘cyberbullying’.

Some loud people badmouth. It’s not just in the jumping puzzle either, It happens in map chat, real life, general chat, other games and sports as well.

Once you have attempted the puzzle so many times, you almost know instinctively where you are and how you need to move. The presence of large characters should not impede your ability to do the puzzle.

People just get frustrated after many failed attempts and unfortunately they want to blame something else for their failure.

It wouldn’t be an issue if the event wasn’t time based, they should have made it ultra hard without the fog, then you can just let the ‘wide load’ characters jump/fall ahead of you.

Lol after the first run I did the first tell I got was “Remove your f-ing armor or leave the f-ing puzzle f-gt!”

I stayed, left my armor on. And just continued to read the whines. My norn is too big? Well your Asuran is too small, make a bigger character.

Completed this on my charr, then stayed to make all the kids who made the excuse I was in there way, instead of admitting they are just garbage, keep falling half a second into the jump puzzle with my “whole screen blocking” psychological warfare.

Well as it goes for me I told everyone that i love Norn and Charr and I even asked them to stand inside of me please (lol). Completed the puzzle either way and got my shoes but I loved the reactions and the focus I got from all those haters – funny thing was that those stopped flaming soon after and just left.

I did it with a Sylvari btw.

Thanks to everyone for their comments, especially the supporters!

However, it doesn’t matter what you think about the term “cyber-bullying” (honestly, it’s just what popped in my head) or that it’s easy to block those conversations. I’ve said it before, I haven’t been a victim of this myself. But why should it even be present in the first place? It may seem like I’m exaggerating, but I’ve seen some incredibly vicious comments. And yes, I’ve reported those members already.

The mere point of this was to just raise some sort of awareness for those that our characters are bothering. We don’t mean to do it, and in that regard, just be respectful and have fun. Because when you start mouthing off, you really ruin the game for some people. Most of the time I like the chats though so I’m okay with keeping them open. Regardless, it shouldn’t be an issue.

Anyway. Hope everyone’s having fun!

All I ever did was ask the Norn (and anyone wearing big flowy clothing) to get naked! Made the puzzle alot easier for us shorties. Most people were nice and got naked so there were just a bunch of us running naked through the clock tower! Hickory dickory dock….

I get annoyed when I see a char or norn simply because it makes an already frustratingly difficult puzzle even more difficult. Even just the presence of one throws me off, even if they aren’t blocking my view.

But, and I’ve said this in-game to norn/char that I’ve ranted at, it’s not your fault. The fault lies in the race and Anet’s design of the puzzle. You don’t deserve it, but you make a convenient outlet for player’s frustration. Just block people if they start acting up.

I got some flak from players yesterday while attempting the puzzle on my main (a mid-sized Charr): mostly Asura players. When it was an Asura, I would quip along the lines of ‘Stop tripping me and I’ll get through this and won’t be in your way anymore.’.

Fortunately the complainers were only griping half-heartedly and usually laughed at my come back.

I’m sorry for all the players who have a big sized character and also wanted to do this event, they were getting flamed unjustly, the average complainer is failing by their own fault and taking the easy way out and blaming others, it’s uncalled for and rude.

It’s only 3 platforms after the first gear-pause and you would have gotten rid of/have a different pace then the rest of the survivors, are you failing the puzzle because of those 3 platforms? Hardly.

If you are one of the people being rude and therefore griefing large character-modelled players I will have to tell you that if you cant do it than its only your fault, I have done the puzzle as a asura and virtually unable to see my character but its absolutely possible to do the critical platforms without seeing your own char, I agree with the OP that people failing at the puzzle should think twice before "griefing"other players at their inability to do the puzzle.

Here’s an idea. Since you know the clocktower puzzle requires 0 group strategy and alot of concentration. Ignore your chat bar? Switch tabs to combat and go about your merry way instead of making pointless threads.

When you enter the tower … turn off UI.

There , they cant talk anymore , and you will do the tower 4x times faster now.

Hmm maybe its just my luck but i didnt see much of those complains lol most of the time it was friendly teasing. Myself am sylvari average or below height so while it gets hard to know where you are jumping its still could be done. And for * sake its a mad realm so why look for a calm place

BTW my solution was simple – just run faster than anyone else ^>^

Seriously though, I only play norn and charr, I find it quite amusing that my playstyle so passively annoys others. It’s like they’re griefing themselves, but trying to scapegoat me for their idiocy.

Yeah I noticed people being size’ist a couple of times while playing my Norn. Didn’t really bother me, but you have to wonder about such people…

You get a piece of soulbound gear for each char that completes it. And people like myself have played Norn throughout the game and have finished other jump puzzles with them.

I’ve also completed it using a shortish human. There were Norn at the start but I didn’t see anyone else at the top, so I’m going to be rude and say it’s a L2P issue :p

I complained a little at first about the inevitably maximum size Charr and Norn who just happened to all be wearing the largest armors possible, but I realized rather quickly that none of them in the entire time I was there ever made it even to the red section of the jumping puzzle. I probably saw 50 or so different max sized Norn and Charr, but the only one of either race I ever saw make it even halfway through the puzzle was a single small Charr who was running naked.

Yeah, it really doesn’t matter, somehow most people die in the first ten seconds soyou just need to learn the first few jumps.

The people that are constantly complaining just suck at the puzzle, no ifs ands or buts. I went through on my full sized norn male which took a while but i finally got it, then went through on my smallest size asura and got it on the 3rd try, then went through on my smallest sized human female and got it on the second try, then i went through on my smallest sized sylvari female and for it on the 4th try and managed to get it 2 more times back to back after that so 3 total back to back wins on a tiny female sylvari. While on my sylvari there was an asura there doing back to back wins with me as well, i believe he got 3 back to back before the server kicked us for the patch yesterday.

Trick is to not even focus on your character, look at your screen and focus on the center, and line that center with each jump and you will have no problems. Also helps to not have the camera angle directly behind you, angle the camera down a bit and zoom out all the way. If you are still stuck, then watch a youtube video of someone doing it so you know the path then after practice it literally becomes a cake walk.

Actually that is not true at all. What took me about 3-4 hours could have been done in 15-20 minutes had it not been for trying to see my character through the initial mouse release. It eventually got to the point where I learned the first 10-15 jumps by heart that I could avoid looking at my character if it got too messy. After passing that sideways cog it was always smooth sailing, always. The tower is a 5/10 puzzle, with the extremely fast goo it is 6/10 but with the other players blocking you for the first half it makes the puzzle 10/10 so don’t say that is the players fault. Some may suck at it but that doesn’t mean anyone who has not finished it sucks; you should stop being so judgemental and elitist. The people complaining all raise mostly the same points and they are not wrong, if this puzzle was instanced then a lot more people could make it and then it would be down to them sucking or not as it is only them at the puzzle and in all honesty it is not as difficult as it seems minus the fast goo and other players.
