In my view, Clock Tower is not fun [Merged]
Getting bored to see people whine about the Clocktower. It ain’t easy but after some tries and after you understand what you’re doing wrong you can make it. I made it in about an hour.
And another fact. Give the Norns and Charrs a break. I even got insulted because I played with a norn character. As you go up, you will be alone ( or almost alone ) so then you’ll see your character and then you can’t say it’s the norns fault that you got caught by the acid.
People do dungeons for hours and hours or grind for hours and hours. Anet gives us a challenging and OPTIONAL jumping puzzle that takes hours to complete and everyone complains. Blows my mind.
Well, I made it. But its still not fun.
Fun, but after several hours of jumping and failing it’s not so fun
maybe you should stop trying for ours, take a break, do something else and come back later..
Do not listen all the whiners here plz. Satisfaction after doing thats compesates all.
I spent 2 hrs but every second was worth it
EricGORE, that was my point. It looks like you’re trying to make that point to me, but that’s what I was saying — it’s a simple puzzle if you take away the mist.
Well, you said “or made slower”, so I guess I focused too much on that rather than your point, sorry. That all said, I still welcome the challenge and wouldn’t want it to be changed. Maybe an additional easier mode, with a different achievement and less loot.
It’s hard because you want to give everyone a chance to enjoy the content, but you want to reward the people who actually took the time to master it. Maybe that’s the way to do it.
Warriors have a trait called Warrior’s spirit, which is a ’run faster while weilding a melee weap’ In the discipline tree.
Except we don’t have our weapons out when doing this. So I don’t know if that trait actually comes into play. Admittedly, I didn’t test it on my warrior, and 10% isn’t all that much.
But in any case speed boosts aren’t needed to have the time to get through.
But if you do use one and you aren’t used to having the boost, be careful -- you may out-pace yourself!
I tested my warrior and my air elemental. Passive speed buff is a big advantage, if you dont have it this thing is really hardcore.
Ah, gotcha.

Not making it part of the Halloween meta-achievement was a smart move in that sense.
It really helps to plan ahead. Follow the exact same path every round, and you will get to the end. I was surprised I had been so close the whole time when I finally got there, and was overcome with joy after trying it for 2 consecutive hours.
That all said, I still welcome the challenge and wouldn’t want it to be changed. Maybe an additional easier mode, with a different achievement and less loot.
Wouldn’t help, because some of us (me included) are a bit OCD and would still be mocked by the missing Hard Mode achievement.
So, I guess my issue besides the fake difficulty is the limited availability of this puzzle. If this was a part of the game that we could access at any time, I wouldn’t sweat any of it. As it is, I have very limited play time available during the Halloween period, and I hate having to spend it all on this one event.
The problem with this event is the presence of other players with large character models. I just tried it with my Sylvari elementalist and was together with 5 Charr and a Norn.
The bit where a part of the platform spawns in after a few seconds is a PITA with large characters standing on top of you (see first screenshot). You can’t see your own character and the debris around the place makes the camera spaz out throughout the jump.
You shouldn’t wish bad luck on other players but I have to admit I sighed with relief every time a Charr next to me fell down the tower so I could see better.
What REALLY frustrated me however was that I reached the top 2 times in which the clock didn’t open. The green goo overtook me but I didn’t die. I finally tried to jump at the closed clock but it wouldn’t let me through. (see second screenshot)

Although I am REALLY bad at this, I wouldn’t want it taken out of the game – what for? I mean, who would benefit by it no longer being there? It’s not like it counts for the Halloween achievement.
However, I agree that it would be much more fun if you could do this as a solo instance – I am having enough trouble with the camera getting stuck at certain points (if I don’t jump at exactly the right angle), hardly being able to see where I could go doesn’t make this any easier.
I can understand people being frustrated. But seriously, Griffonrook Run is right over there. Do that first, then come back and tell me if the Clocktower is unfair or hard. It isn’t. But it’s slightly challenging. You might have to try it several times.

4 hours to just do some lame kitten jumping.. Not worth the time..
Oh god Griffonrook… never again……
Why crying?
i made it in 30 minutes, it’s pretty easy seriously… and great puzzle mechanics, need more like that !
gz anet for the puzzle i loved it a lot

I don’t know what is more shocking, the high rate of failure or the amount of time some people sat solely at this puzzle.
I just now beat it. It was pretty hard but so fun. I haven’t felt this invigorated from a platforming experience in a while. It’s intense, and I’m glad it’s in the game.

There was a thread floating around just before where the OP was whining about how hard the puzzle was and stomping her feet about it not being fair. The thread ended when she finally completed it and then told us she was just being a big baby and felt really good about completing it.
You and I appreciate a good challenge, others apparently do not. :\
Its supposed to be hardcore, that’s the point. There are so many jumping puzzles in the game, THIS one is a super achievement.
Im going to try this with my sylvari ele and an asura and compare the difficulty. If all else fails guys..make a lvl 1 char or norn and problem solved.
For me it was very frustrating but in a good way. Not the way that would make you want to smash your monitor with your keyboard, but the way that makes you want to do it till you beat it. Took me around 1 hour of trying but when I finished it I felt amazing.
Protip: You can skip 80% of the platforms after the pause, and make sure to jump from the very edge, not before.
The whole thing is .. 1 little lag issue or FAIL GRAFIX issue and its over. its 100% bullcrap for a car large char to try and jump on these tinny little platforms. been at it for 6 hours with 0 luck.
It’s incredibly fun!
Yes, it has some cheap NES-esque elements to it, but I just see it as a part of the challenge. A lot of people succeeded, so it’s perfectly possible.
And the music is great.
The only thing I didn’t like is that some classes have ways to increase their move speed even though it’s clearly not intended. A-net needs to invest in ways to fully disable all kinds of class-specific bonuses, so they can implement other speed-reliant events in the future and keep them fair.
Took 3 hours for me…found it frustrating at times. But i kept at it because it was challenging and fun.
At first it was soooo daunting as if I could not beat it. But really, its all practice and memory. Then you just have to execute. And there is room for small errors.
I loved the clocktower!
You guys can cry as you want but it won’t make up for the simple fact that it is you who are failing. Passive speed buff? Yeah right, what is this gonna buy you, an extra 2 seconds? If you need those, you already lost. It is really not that hard. Bummer you only get 10 tots when completing it again..
Most fun ive had. I completed it after 2ish hrs, on my charr warrior. And im going back to do it more tonight with a sylvari and asura (more challenging apparently)
The best thing was it actually felt like an achievement because it was so hard. If you are having trouble on your asura, make a lvl 1 charr or norn, problem solved.
Also the music is amazing and is 1/2 the reason i love it. Props to all involved
Gota love the 1 out of 30-40 people who complete it Love it but yet there 100s of posts form people who haveing due to big in game issues like chars .. camera.. grafix bugs .. lag.. and so on and so on..

Griffonrook is actually quite interesting an example; it does have an easy mode and a hard mode. You don’t need to take the bomb with you; you’ll still get the achievement if you don’t, but you don’t get any loot.
Zephyrweaver (H/Ele/80), Dusk Weaver (A/Thief/80), Soulweaver (S/Mes),
Svàlinn (C/Guard), Exxíon (A/Engi/80), Spectrallum (S/Necro)
Griffonrook Run is not competitive. You don’t fail and get nothing if someone else who is hard coded to move faster than you goes faster than you.
So shines a good deed in a naughty world.

I like it, stop speaking for everyone
Would rather it was a private instance, but that’s my only issue.
Desolation ~ Just the [Tip]
I find the whole halloween event not fun. Just not my cup of tea. Guess what?
I just go and do other things. I don’t complain, I don’t whine and I don’t play the “I am leaving guys” card.
Do something else. There was 1000 things to do before, still is.
That’s funny, I found it fun…
Gandara
After getting achivement, I did it bros
Its very fun

The only thing i will complain about is that this should be a solo instance. Its extremely hard to do this with other people blocking your screen. Otherwise, the difficulty is spot on. This really reminds me of old school games…..oh boy have i been rusty.
I started this pretty late at night with my eyes being already pretty tired. I should be able to get it when im not so tired.
Challenging is fun even if im never ever going to beat it….though i will eventually
One of my best friends and I worked on this for almost 3 hours. We were in vent the entire time and sure we were frustrated at first but once we convinced the group we were in to take off their cloths it got easier. Some of the larger races with there flowing robes make it tough to see edges to jump but after everyone took off their cloths it got easier. We kept giving each other tips as we got further, I beat it first about 2 and a half hours in my buddy got it at 3 hours and it was the greatest feeling I have had since my 100% map completion!
Arenenet if you change anything I would say solo instance but nothing more. Dont take away the accomplishment that others made doing it the way it currently is. Other games have made this mistake (Star Wars Galaxies, NGE) and it doomed the game. This is the problem with out society these days, parents have taught their kids that everyone wins with this not keeping score at game and crap. Not everyone can be a winner but that is what makes you strive hard to be better. Im sorry for anyone who physically cannot do it but we cannot force the whole world to bend to that level or we would all be reduced to playing games made for 5 year olds.

Absolutely agree.
Oh man I’m dying here right now. Pulling the “disabled players” card is so low. You don’t have to do the JP you can still continue to play the game without doing it.
Currently playing Heart of Thorns.
Seriously players quitting a game over an optional puzzle?…come on.
You need to take a chill pill man and relax, the puzzle is meant to be a challenge, do you seriously expect everything to be easy and handed to you on a silver platter?
Leave the puzzle as is, the only thing I could think of to quit the whining on here is maybe slow down the acid (or ooze, whatever it is) but not too much, it’s not bad now, you just have to be fast, and memorize the jumps.
The best part of the whole event for me. Fun and challenging, did it myself in 15minutes of trying, some guildmates tried for 4 hours lol. Guess some people can jump and some cant. No reason to moan about it. And it doesn’t even count for the Mad King title achievement.
But there should be more puzzles like this coming tbh. I wouldn’t want all to be like this, but for events and big expansions these are perfect.
This guy is right when he says “NOT FUN”. I am pretty sure thats what ANet claimed they measured the game by. If that is true then you cant deny the Clock Tower has failed that. I dont care what the trolls say about how many times they completed it or how easy it is. Learn to play and shut up does not change the fact this is “NOT FUN”. I worked on this puzzle all day yesterday and I seen 1 person get to the top for every 15-20 people who quit out of frustration. Troll away elitists but what kills games is not listening to the majority of players not the elite minority. Making this doable and fun does not necessarly mean nerf it to death, it still has a long way to go before it loses any element of challenge (for most) All im saying is if this is supposed to be fun then you have failed………..and before I get the usual troll responses to this, I did complete it! Im just sticking up for the other 15-20 that didnt because they are just as important as me.

Even if you are not good at jumping puzzles you should at least be able to memorize all the jumps after ~15 runs.

I hate it but I am just not going to do it. Not a big deal. There should be things in the game that are a challenge that not everyone can do.
If you don’t have passive buffs or they’re skill dependant (skills were disabled for me) use candy corn. 10% speed buff for 10 sec and you can stack it as long as you don’t throw up (seems random chance starting from 20 seconds and later). It’s Halloween, use candy!
All those plebians in this thread.
I had asuras with golems in my run and still did it easily.
The puzzle stays the way it is.
This is a bullkitten JP, it should be a solo instance… not seeing your character is not fun.
I understand your well written response, but I must respectfully disagree. While frustrating at first, this has been one of the most enjoyable jumping puzzles I’ve experienced. The first time through the WvW eternal battleground puzzle during beta was a nightmare for me, but now I can do it easily and it’s very fun while still being a challenge! The Mad King’s Clocktower is no different.
I don’t know if speed traits/buffs affect, but i did it several times on all my chars with no speed buff…clock tower it’s fine. All you need is to memorize a bit the path (mainly the first part) and try to get ahead of the zerg so you can actually see better. It didn’t take me more than 20 minutes to get it done and after that it’s pretty much easy to get it done anytime…the trick is just to get ahead of everyone once it starts…a few seconds later you will be nearly alone
This event is relatively possible for users under a specific amount of ping. I don’t have a good ping myself INSIDE Mad King’s maps, and whenever I get ported into the tower with 20 users watching cutscenes I get kicked out before I can move forward in the stairs.
If you could settle an extra time right in the start of the jumping puzzle I and high ping users would be extremely thankful. Believe me this, please consider.
