Then the simple, blunt answer is that you just won’t be able to complete it. All content does not come with a pre requisite that it must be able to be done by anyone no matter what. As others have noted in this thread, it’s very doable. Nerfing it would make it trivial. This is a learning process, but if after 5 hours you aren’t nearly completing it, or progressing, then it just isn’t for you.

I mean, I haven’t tried Reaper Rumble yet (couldn’t get into it for some reason), but Lunatic Inquisition is pretty much one of the most fun things I’ve done in this game.

After spending/wasting 3 hours to beat the clock tower (I’m a stubborn completionist. I know it isn’t compulsory) I can say I feel more frustration than reward. It wouldn’t have been so bad if the “limited” holiday time didn’t add such pressure to finish it. In the hopes of preventing other players from experiencing this (and seeing it in future events) what about the compromise of adding checkpoints after each chest? It would prevent the frustration of missing an early jump or getting farther than yo have only to not know where to go immediately (and failing as a result). That way, players could focus on conquering smaller areas at a time and have intermediate rewards and “gates” as they learned.

But Anet shouldn’t trivialize the content they introduce, which would be what they have to do to make it complete-able by 100% of their players.

It’s not a feeling of “yes I did it!” for a lot of people. It’s a feeling of “ugh that’s finally over.” This is not how you want a lot of people to feel.

Nobody is complaining because the jumping puzzle is hard, they are complaining because it isn’t fun. Personally, I know that the majority of the time that I fail this clocktower, it’s because I mistimed a jump. But there’s also been cases where I botched a jump because six other players are on a 10-pixel-wide platform, and I misjudged where the edge was. I’ve also gotten hung up on doodads because I play a bulkier char.

When I stop having fun, I just go off and do something else for a bit then come back. I’m not asking for this game to be Babby’s First MMO Lite, I’m just sticking up for the people who aren’t enjoying this and explaining their positions, so you can take your die-hard elitism and misdirected rage at “casuals” elsewhere. Nobody here is interested in hearing you lord your video game achievements over other people.

I’ll add my agree 100% as well. The point of the game is not to entertain us…but to make money. It is a business venture pure and simple and how the company views their product, what their goals are in the short and long term, effects (or should effect) how they design and implement content as well as how they maintain the product after release. Unless you have relatively short term plan to rake in as much profit off the “newness” of the game with as little upkeep as possible before moving on to the next thing with profits in hand rather than a goal of investing in a long term venture, alienating even half of your player base is a very bad choice. Especially so early on. Of course, the newness factor is still in play so they can get away with this type of thing for at least a year.

I am apparently oblivious to this surging tide of cries for the clocktower to be made fun.

Also just because someone doesn’t like the design of a feature doesn’t mean it was designed poorly or designed in such a way that it isn’t “fun” (as if everyone could agree on what is fun). I am not particularly fond of Rata Sum, but i don’t say it sucks and demand changes.

This morning, I had an overflow of the clocktower to myself. It was fun!

I had no wait times when I failed, so I could try again straight away. I could actually play the puzzle. It was a hoot.

Then the other player started to fill in my instance. Using a small human character, I was quickly swallowed in a sea of Charr and Norn kitten I could not see my model for any of the jumps.

I have a strong animosity when I play the clocktower towards other players, thanks to Anet’s lack of foresight. I know I’m not alone in this.

How about forcing a “ghostly” model on all the players that join the puzzle? Make this right Anet.

The Clock Tower does not prevent people from experience any part of the game or the Halloween event except for the Clock Tower.

I understand that not everyone is good at platforming, but every part of the game does not need to be accessible to every type of gamer. I don’t care for the PvP, so I will most likely never get the PvP achievements, or even the monthly achievements since they have PvP components. But this doesn’t bother me, because there are many other areas of the game that are accessible to me and that I enjoy. This type of complaining will only serve to water down the game and make it a generic experience.

But the difference is you can still access the PvP and get those parts if you want. People who are having latency/character blocking/platforming problems can’t get these parts right now. And it doesn’t feel like an achievement; it feels like a chore.

Honestly I think if the number of characters per instance was cut down, the latency and platforming problems would resolve themselves pretty quickly. Beyond that, I don’t understand why the mist timer is on it in the first place. Most people aren’t getting beaten by the timer, they’re screwing up the jumps they would normally anyway.

The easiest solution would be to turn everyone into the same model upon entry, like a mummy or something else that’s humanoid. The more difficult solution would be to make it instanced per player/party, and then make fitting adjustments to preserve whatever mysterious goal they had in mind when they decided to control when and how you do the puzzle.

It’s hard to believe that this is the same game, considering how many times Colin and other ArenaNet members have stated that you will never see other players as competition for content, and the tower is designed from the ground up to make you dislike the presence of other players. It’s not even a discussion of difficulty, but it’s just going against the core design of the game.

Someone made a really good point. If this was permanent and I had all the time in the world to do it, I wouldn’t care that it was as difficult as it is, because I could come back to it when I had free time. But giving those of us that have trouble with it only a week, when there are so many other things to do, is just a bad move.

I spent over 7 hours today and didn’t get it. That’s my ENTIRE gaming day pretty much. I would like to be able to participate in other things instead of being stuck in an instance for HOURS on end.

The point of GW2 is to get us out into the world, but when you have a puzzle that’s limited time only, and is this difficult your pulling mass amounts of players out of other holiday content and things like SPvP and WvW. This screws everyone over, not just the hundreds, if not thousands, of people doing this for hours just so they can complete it.

This would also reduce the amount of traffic into the instance, allowing for smaller groups, or even single participants…since it could be done any time.

Really the only people who have a valid complaint on this are mostly Asura, who can’t see their character when jumping

I reccomend trying it on a human or sylvari, find out where all the good jump spots are and then switch to your asura / norn / charr

I hated that at first too. But after like 15 minutes I got the hang of the first 25-33% of the jumping puzzle and that’s where people start dropping fast.

I was playing as asura which is even worse, and it made me fall probably a dozen times due to not being able to judge distance all that well. But I see that as part of the trick of the first part of the tower… dealing with the mass.

I honestly don’t get how people maintain the idea that making one HOLIDAY event (you know the things that only stick around for a week so that everyone can have fun doing something in a holiday), so its actually fun, is going to ruin the entire game, like if they change an unimportant event, their clearly just going to give everyone god-mode in the same patch?

Its not just difficult, it’s annoying, depressing and makes me feel the opposite of how I want to be feeling during a ‘fun’ holiday event.

Just putting my two cents in here. First time i tried the JP i was nearly crying in frustration. Today i manned up and went back after watching a few youtube videos, i felt a lot more prepared. Also, the people that were in my overflow were amazing and determined, keeping everyone’s morale up and making jokes along the way. After trying and failing for an hour i finally got it, and it felt AWESOME! All i’m saying is; don’t give up!

I am one of those people who are not good at jumping puzzles at all, but i learned today that with patience and a sense of humor, everything is possible

These two factors in the jumping puzzle:

1. Seeing where you are.
2. Seeing where you have to jump to.

Are completely broken because of other characters blocking the view. There’s no way around this because of the timing. Everyone is at the same place.

Most of the time I fail because I can’t see where my character is, sometimes because I can’t see what I’m jumping to, occasionally because I’ve stopped so I can see where to jump and the time’s run out, and rarely because I’ve misjudged a jump.

I should be mostly failing this because I’ve either misjudged a jump or I’ve taken too long. But this is not what is happening. The difficulty of the clock tower depends more on the race and ability of your companions than it does on your ability to do a jumping puzzle!

I loved this jumping puzzle. It was exciting, frustrating, fun, addictive. After learning where and how to jump, i didn’t give a kitten about norns, charrs or anything else.

It was a great experience, to actually work for something. One of the few things you actually need to work (not grind) for. I advise everyone to try it – it’s not as hard as it looks, it just requires you to remember where you jumped and how.

Same. It was amazing and a nice challenge to face in this event. (It took me several hours to get it right, but it was well worth it!)

they should make glass shatter bigger…i tried 10 times to jump in that small hole and couldn`t make it…it`s really annoying..and thats why i gave up on that puzzle…plz just make the hole bigger…everything else is ok..im playing charr…

Here’s my experience of the clock tower…

Arrived, standing around with lots of other people. No idea whats going on but we seem to be in a queue of some sort so ok…
Cutscene starts. Watch with interest.
Cutscene ends and I’m instantly ported back to the beginning. Seems I failed before I even managed to see what was going on or even reach the keyboard or mouse.
Stand around for a few minutes as other people who have obviously failed as well end up back here.
Mark it down as a waste of my time and leave.

Great fun…

Found pottering around on Desolation (EU).

The Clock Tower is one of my favorite things in the entire game. Yeah, the repeated cutscene, the short wait time, and trying to see yourself in the crowds of people at the start are minor annoyances but overall it’s just amazing. Finally an actual hard jumping puzzle. It got my heart pumping!

It’s not a feeling of “yes I did it!” for a lot of people. It’s a feeling of “ugh that’s finally over.” This is not how you want a lot of people to feel.

Disagreed.

In my experience, all guildmembers and people in the tower who made it were showing joy when they finished. caps, smileys, showing the slippers etc., all mentioned how much they liked the tower and how much then enjoyed it, despite the small annoyances.

Could you define ‘a lot’ to me, because my experience seems to differ greatly from yours.

If they added an option to choose the tower as it is now or one where removed they time constraint and the rising goo, every single one of these elitest blowhards would be running the easier one 100% of the time, regardless of what they will claim on the public forums.

Generally it goes like this:

People that havent completed it yet vs people who have.

I actually like the wait time, When i first started the puzzle eventually I noticed the same people failing over and over with me. I got to meet a bunch of random people from random servers that I would have never met doing anything else.

Finishing it the first time felt great, and thanks to learning the muscle memory to do the puzzle i redid it several times on all my alts.

Also you can get 12-16 ToT bags a run (you can open the chest on the gear you have to go down to after you went up).

I am about to stop playing this entire game because of this puzzle. In everygame I play I always go for achievments. I simply will not be getting this achievement. Since its only here for a few days and I have work/school/a social life and have already spent way over 8 hours on this puzzle and not made it half way up yet. There is simply too many people in the zone blocking my view. I am an asura but made a level 2 human which made it slightly easier to see but I still can’t do it. The green goo moves way 2 fast I fail on that part where u jump to the lower block and the green goo gets me there. I’ve had over 200 attempts now. I am not laughing anymore. I dont want the item, I just want the achievement. Please remove the achievement from this puzzle or extend the duration of it to a few weeks at least. If I miss this achievement I will NOT bother playing the game anymore.

Remove the achievement? This is exactly what achievements are SUPPOSED to be… an achievement. Not “Oh hey guys, I spent 6,000 hours killing 500,000 of these mobs”. It’s something that requires skill and not everyone will be able to get. That’s a real achievement.

This would be the ultimate correction. The puzzle itself is fine, the lack of Anet’s foresight kills it for players using models smaller than a mack truck.

Some of us find the run fun. I like the feeling when I break out of the pack, as people fall to their deaths around me and I’m the only one remaining on the way to the top. I like being the reason why the people who fall early have to wait.

It’s called an achievement for a reason. You may want to learn what the word means. If failing it makes you quit the game, well, yeah. Enjoy your next game where “achievements” are unlocked by anyone and everyone to make themselves feel good.

I gave up on it. Never mind the ridiculous timer, the low visibility, the racial limitations, the “clock face bug”, or the lag. I’m done. I play MMOs precisely because I don’t enjoy the reflex-driven play of console games – I prefer something with more cerebral focus. I even tolerate the other jumping puzzles, because of the “puzzle” aspect.

There’s no real “puzzle” to this one, other than how anyone with accessibility needs, or without hours to kill while committing this puzzle to muscle memory, or without the willingness to tolerate completing the sequence only to be shafted when jumping at the clock face by an unexplainable bug, would find this fun. There’s no fun here, just relief at having to chew through this thing to get an achievement.

I enjoyed pretty much every other aspect, even the exploited PvP events, but I won’t be doing this aspect of the Halloween event.

Honestly guys once you get it it’s not to bad. I found it fun myself until the last hour or so and had a great time doing it =D so thank you ArenaNet. Admittedly you almost broke me and made me cry but… in the end it really is rewarding. Want proof of you being freaking happy? Here’s proof.

I like the clock tower. However! I think that it should be a solo event or if you’re going to group us all together then make the other players invisible. Personally I don’t find jumping puzzles hard if I’m doing them alone. I can better focus on the path to take and get from A to B to C without the distractions of other players. Of course the puzzle should be a challenge that isn’t the problem. For me personally the problem lies in having to focus on the path whilst having several other characters putting me off. It’s a mindset that I cannot shake and I think many others cannot shake either. The puzzle is an excellent feature but the grouping aspect of should have been better thought out…. I’m not going to ask for it to be changed because that would be unfair to the players that have already achieved it. Hopefully arenanet take this into account when they implement another JP (maybe for Christmas)?

I agree, the tower isn’t fun. A guildie and I tried to do it for 1½ hour last night and gave up. I’m a Asura Thief, and he a Sylvari ranger. Both of us had contiunally problems of being pushed of blocks by other players, and too a really bad camera view that screwed up the depth perception of the jumps. Unfortunatly, to complete all of the Halloween event, the tower is needed for a full count of completion. I got most of the events down, just that I’m missing that tower…wich I have given up.

What Anet could do is to remove the tower for completing the full event, move it to the Jumpung Puzzle list as an extra perk, and let it be that. In that way, the jumpers will get the extra perk, and the rest will get a full completion without having to suffer from an event that is for some not fun, time consuming, and a source of aggrovation. Besides that, it’s a win-win for all around if that change is made.

As it stands now, I won’t be going back to finish that tower, and too not be able to complete the Halloween event list….it sucks, but that is how it is, it seems.

If you cater to a small crowd of blowhards who insist everything must be difficult and can only be achieved through hours of grinding, a huge majority of players become disillusioned with the game.

If they don’t find the game fun, they stop playing. When they stop playing, they aren’t supporting the game through expansion purchases or gem store goods. And what should be more relaxed and fun than a simple holiday event?

I mean, I haven’t tried Reaper Rumble yet (couldn’t get into it for some reason), but Lunatic Inquisition is pretty much one of the most fun things I’ve done in this game.

But your paragraph 2 is appalling. Am I to understand that if these hypothetical casual gamers come across a single jumping puzzle in a holiday event that lasts a week and change that is too difficult, or too fussy, or too glitchy for them to fully enjoy, that they will UP AND QUIT THE GAME? And not buy any expansions, or return at any juncture? Because of this one puzzle? That, if the forums are any indication, plenty of people actually like?

I guess I probably don’t need to tell you what I think about that.

Agreed. I just spent the 2 most useless hours of my life trying to reach the top, and the furthest I got was to the second beam. The whole time I had slight delay, even though I was running with minimal graphic options. I can’t help but think the one who came up with this whole tower must’ve been an utter sadist, as the tower was all but fun for the vast majority of the people I encountered, myself included.

With all the respect, if you quit playing a game because you missed a single achievement, then you somewhat deserve to be called out on it.

Who cares that you did not get one achievement? It is certainly doable within the timeframe, even for those who have some difficulties with it.
Yes, you might be unlucky and not get it. That sucks, but achievements are (or rather, should be) achievements for a reason.

If they made the puzzle easier, a lot of people would find it a piece of cake. What the ‘too hard’ crowd is asking for is for the clock tower to be challenging, exciting, and rewarding for them but trivially easy for others. It’s just as self-centred as any other opinion.

In the future (i.e. next year I guess), ArenaNet might consider adding two versions — one without the green goo (time limit). The hard version would stay the same and give additional rewards/achievement/title.

Don’t get me wrong, I think people saying “I can’t do this therefore I’ll quit!” is a little extreme. Using the extremes is somewhat disingenuous to the point at hand when the majority of people are just saying “I don’t enjoy the clock tower stuff for [reason].”

Like I’ve said, I personally don’t really have much of a problem with the clock tower, beyond not really seeing the purpose of the mist.

Can’t see where I’m jumping and it’s timed. It’s not fun, it’s aggravating. This is the kind of experience that makes me want skip the holiday event altogether.
