Why anet? The whole new place inside Divinitys reach is temporary. If im not mistake all the new things like the arena will take place inside there. Not to mention the arena isnt instanced, so like thousands of people will queue up for it, so you only get to experience it once until its gone.

Why..? As someone said, if you keep giving us temporary content like this, this game will be dead as soon as another big MMO coming out (Wildstar being the biggest). I know ALOT of people moving to wildstar simply because this is just stupid.

You make people RUSH your content just to finish it before the time runs out and get the rewards. this is forcing us to play, something you SHOULD NOT DO since there is no supscription fee. i mean, with no subscription fee we arent forced to play, but it we are anyways. Since the temporary content.

You said like 2 months ago you will start giving us more permanent, but i think its bullkitten. Proove it, please

Perhaps there was something more sinister than badly constructed foundations behind the great collapse, and at the end of the festival the earth will open up once again and swallow the Crown Pavilion.

But yeah, I’m with you on the disappointment over temp content. Though I should probably point out that there are plenty of threads addressing it already.

Lets wait until we see the reason why it is not permanent, shall we?
Since it is quite clear that there is a reason for it, otherwise it would be rather weird to just shut off part of the city for no reason other than the end of the event.

Where is the fulfillment of these promises:

He said they’re gonna update the dungeons through the living story. As in giving a meaning to the changes.

Correct! I think some of you are making assumptions that living world means the stuff we’ve done the last few months and that’s all you’re going to see. My point is saying we’ve seen folks feedback and are adjusting that strategy to include a much larger mix of permanent updates going forward.

I’m quite happy with the amount of updates in GW2, but I wish more of it was permanent.

We’ve been playing around so far this year with a lot of different concepts to see what works for a living world game, and see what players liked and didn’t like. Based on all of your feedback, you’ll be seeing a greater degree of permanent content built into future living world releases in 2013. And of course, some things you’ve seen before may return again, in its current form but updated like SAB or holiday festivals, or in a new form entirely….

We’ve said it a few times before, but I want to just re-iterate we’ve heard folks feedback on this and will be doing a much larger mix of permanent, recurring (content that can occur again in the future), and more world impacting releases as it relates to living world in the second half of the year. There will still absolutely be some amount of temporary, in particular story-driven moments to help drive the narrative forward. You’ll also see some of the content previously noted as “temporary” return permanently to the game in the 2nd half of the year.

@AndrewSX

You make it sound as though the whole company is working on the Living World content. Though from what Colin said in the video, only a portion of the team has been chosen to make this content, and even then, they’ve been split into smaller groups to work on each individual month separately. Meaning that the people that are handling the Bazaar this July will be different than the team handling the update in August which will be different from the team handling the update in September.
It wouldn’t surprise me at all if they’re handling other aspects of the game similarly.

Also true! And as noted, the four living world teams going forward will be working on a much wider array of content and more permanent, recurring, and world changing content with the additional time they’ll have now with four total teams to rotate. Chris and MikeZ talked to the press last week about all the details, make sure to check out the interviews that go up today to find out more!

We’ll be continuing to permanently update our dungeons and rewards for dungeons this year and beyond, these updates will be part of living world releases in the future as well as we expand the scope of living world releases to include more permanent updates to the game.

In my eyes, it looks like this living world release will have MORE TEMPORARY content than any other living story release…

If we looks back from release 11 months ago. What big updates have we had?

Guild missions, fractals, southsun (What a joke of a area, tbh)…? Am i missing something? I do not talk about “Oh, they change the look of that place” or “No, they added moa racing, this is something people will log in to play”

So.. Time for some change Anet?

“Everything in this patch is temporary”? Uh. No, not even remotely true. The new minizone and associated rewards are temporary. Champion/dungeon rewards, account wallet, solo queue, watchwork recipes, minigame rotation, these are all permanent changes. I’m QQing myself about the temporary nature of the Queen’s Gauntlet because it’s really kitten hard to justify taking something like that away after a month, but it’s not like the WHOLE patch is temporary.

They have added quite a few quality of life updates which have been steller. However, as has been since launch, their content teams are weak at creating compelling and interesting things for us to do. Adding a time constrained and time gated area certainly isnt helping their cause in this next update.

The new sPvP solo queue is permanent.

The Account Currency Wallet is permanent.

Every update is going to have temporary content. Every update is going to have permanent content. The temporary content keeps the game fresh. The permanent content improves quality of life and gives us new armor and weapon skins and more options to our game play.

The new Champion content is going to see a LOT of use by players. There are really interesting Champion fights out there that no one really does because people just want loot chests. this update is fixing that permanently.

I get you. You want the content focus to be all permanent content. They are doing that in the future which Colin has stated repeatedly. They are also trying out this two weeks thing. I personally love it because it keeps the content fresh. I play a lot so getting an expansion every year is not as fun for me as what they are doing with these two week updates. I also enjoy being able to do the meta events with all my guildies as opposed to other MMOs that make me play with a party only. There are other games out there that do the expansion content and then menial stuff throughout the year. Let’s be patient with ArenaNet and see where they take this 2 week update thing over the course of say, a year. There really isn’t any precedent for it and they are learning on the fly as they go.

The other part of me is tiring of all the incessant whining on the forums. No one has said, “Thanks ArenaNet for giving us the new skins off of enemies and not through the BLTC.”

At some point if people don’t agree with the core concept of where they are heading with game design, there are other options out there. I for one am excited for where all of this is going and ArenaNet to me is treating it’s customers great.

I can agree with you on a few topics, and I completely disagree on a few others.

On the case of 2 week releases vs expansion every year, which number is greater 10 or (2+2+2+2+2)? Its an interesting concept that some people like and dislike. From a content release standpoint, sure Ill take content more frequently, however I will not take that option if the content we receive will never be playable again. So while there is no precedent for this release cycle they have heard their user base begging for more permanent playable content since March yet we have received very little in that department. Which brings me to a topic that I completely disagree with you one. Anet has promised us the world, and has given us a tiny jar of sand. And its throughout the game. No grind turned into a little grind with ascended gear. ESports ready PvP turned out to be a game mode with little launch support. So many things we have been promised throughout development and after release have fallen through to the point that as developers they now fear to release any information until something is ready for release. This has a HUGE drawback of being developed without any input from the community that will be using this content. To me, that is hardly treating the customer great.

This is just not true. After it was revealed that Molten facility was not going to be permanent in March the outcries have come in and subsequently acknowledged by the development team. This is not a new issue that has only be prevalent since the latest Southsun event.

I’m also dissapointed about it being all temporary but I’ll take a wait and see attitude towards it… after all, we don’t know WHY it’s permanent in the first place. For all we know kralkatorrik might show up and destroy the whole place leading to some new dungeons in the zone and stuff like that leading to an epic worldwide event (hey, the game was released on august 28th, the first anniversary will fall during this event).

That said, as Ursan said, Anet promised more permanent living world content 2 weeks ago, by then everything we’re seeing in this patch, or at least what will be released tomorrow, was most likely all wrapped up and doing some last moment testing and tweaking, and I’d be willing to say everything for the next couple of month of updates are probably already not only planned but VERY advanced into producton. If anything I think we’ll probably start seeing some more permanent content around october at the very least (that is assuming they didn’t have some planned to begin with, maybe for the anniversary).

It’s a pile of Elonian protection magic, mixed with a little monk training,
wrapped up in some crazy ritualist hoo-ha from Cantha.

Still over a month ago, considering they did say that the development cycle for new content is about 4 months, would mean this particular patch was most likely already too late into development to do major changes to it, specially considering we don’t know how will the story pan out in the first place, both here and on new future content (as I said, for all we know the pavillion might get destroyed creating new permanent areas, no idea).

How long does it take to NOT remove an area from the game?

Very involved, especially once you’ve started developing content with the design decision that it’s going to be temporary. Depending on whether content is temporary or permanent, it can be vastly different, from the perspective of things such as details for immersion or reward structure.

Take Southsun. During SoS it was incredibly populated and lively because players were motivated by the temporary nature/novelty of the new content. But now it is mostly deserted, because the area was designed for large groups of people. Its reward structure worked great as temporary content, but not as permanent content.

Stuff like designing a storyline for things that stay. The Aetherblades can’t be always attacking LA. The Zephyr sanctum already has lore that states they only dock once every while. You can’t just go and change this in the middle of development.

If you think Colin Johanson can go up to a team and tell them “Alright folks, we’re just going to keep this map permanently” without thoroughly going through all of the details, you’re vastly underestimating the effort required for game development.

The whole new area after the current one is probably already built. Maybe it’s not too different to the gauntlet after all. Hmm we’ll see.

They spent 4 months developing an area and mini-game to have it be destroyed and never seen again?

I’d say they are stupid and should find a new team of developers.

Or they could just move it to an instanced area by talking to an NPC.

Game Director

Hey folks,

I wanted to take a moment and address this, it’s a totally fair question and something as a player (removing my GD hat) I’d wonder the same thing as well. As I covered in my blog post last month, a major focus of our living world releases in the second half of the year will be on focusing our living world releases on content that has a larger sense of persistence, and more permanent effect on the world.

You’ll start seeing this strategy come into effect with the release 2 weeks from now, and grow as the year continues. The story of these living releases will occur long enough for it to play out reasonably and then update as the story moves forward, while the content and playable experiences (except specific story beats) will persist forever as a result of that story occurring.

We still want to have some content that can happen each year, our holiday festivals, Super Adventure Box, Zephyr Sanctum, and the new Queens Gauntlet are all intended to be content that will regularly return. The goal of having these in our portfolio of event content that can occur again each year is they allow us the opportunity to easily build on something we’ve already completed as themes for some of our releases for year 2.

We wanted to get to the end of the first year of Gw2 with a decent amount of these events that can happen each year in our pocket, to allow our second year a lot more opportunities to lean on these while we focus on much larger projects we’ve been working on in the background. You will not see another new recurring style event in 2014 once our core portfolio of returning events have been completed with the Queens Gauntlet. You’ll already see the benefits of this as the return of Halloween, SAB, and Wintersday has given some of our teams time to focus on other bigger projects during that time.

As to the point of this specific release, there are a ton of permanent features and content. From the update of mini-games becoming permanent on a rotation, champion loot, solo queue PvP and leaderboards, dungeon reward changes, currency wallet, PvP leaver penalties (dishonorable), the FX culling system and more! However, we do recognize one of the components is returning content rather than constant, we need one more core event in our portfolio to fill out our ability to pull off the ambitious plans we have for next year. We too want to have an even larger playable content impact as stated in our goals for the second half of 2014, you’ll be see seeing that play out shortly.

Soon, you won’t need to ask “is this permanent or temporary?”, you’ll simply be able to look at story specific parts and know the story goes away when it’s done, and the playable core content remains and changes based on the outcomes of the story. As a player, I’d rather login and experience an event knowing the outcome and the results of the story will create content I can see and experience for years, than have it all go away 2 weeks later, and have no impact.

We’re also looking into options that would allow players to experience the story sequences that will go away as the story moves forward for those who missed them, but this is still a ways off as we look at various options.

As a reminder, this is where we’re headed and the goals we’ve given to our teams to accomplish, it just takes a few months until we fully get our projects on this track: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/looking-ahead-guild-wars-2-in-2013/

@AndrewSX

What you conveniently (like anybody should be shocked with hyperbole and blah blah blah) forgot to mention was that colin said that MORE perma content will start happening later NOT now because they only recently started doing it.

The content in the near future will still be mainly temp until later in 2013 when the will start implementating the feedback. If you took the time to look up those quotes I am sure you can find the others.

They spent 4 months developing an area and mini-game to have it be destroyed and never seen again?

I’d say they are stupid and should find a new team of developers.

Or they could just move it to an instanced area by talking to an NPC.

It takes no effort at all to NOT remove something. They just don’t care.

I am just talking about possible reasons why this won’t be permanent.

And after all they did build the Bazaar and it is leaving tomorrow, so I don’t really see why it would be different to simply destroying it.

I think the problem is that some of the temporary stuff is stuff that people want to keep playing. I personally don’t see why you wouldn’t want to keep a “Boss Rush” year round so people could be constantly challenging themselves and testing out new builds to see what they like. It would be great for the game.

They can easily leave all this Queens Jubilee content in game permanently, they do not need to wait for “the release 2 weeks from now” to start adding more permanent content.

Queens Jubilee might just be some of the funest, most dynamic, challenging, rewarding content you have added since the launch of this game, there is NO REASON AT ALL for you to remove this content.

Okay, this sounds good and I do hope we will see Queens Gauntlet return to certain times. But I’m still worried about the achievements for the Gauntlet and how difficult they are. With only 4 weeks (and smack in the middle of holiday summer) will we have enough time and chances to reach these achievements? I read about testers not being able to finish after several weeks trying, so I’m worried my experience with the Gauntlet will just be a frustated one because of this time pressure.

We’re also looking into options that would allow players to experience the story sequences that will go away as the story moves forward for those who missed them, but this is still a ways off as we look at various options.

Since you guys work and see this game almost every day, take it from me: you cannot imagine how necessary this system is if you want to continue doing story-based content updates every two weeks. Maybe you think you know it is something really needed, but however much that is…it’s still actually higher than you think. We may not get the “is this content temporary or permanent” later (although I have my doubts because as long as something is going to go away, that question will still be asked), but we will still get questions on “who is this guy and why is he important” because we can’t replay the story events.

Sometimes the simplest solution is often the best, however. For Flame and Frost you guys had recap NPCs to rewatch several story instances. It’s crude, but at least it’d be in-game and not just a text blurb on the wiki (that page should be more for review than learning about it for the first time). A later system can be implemented to replay and track previous living world content, even…

Most likely, the event and the achieves (since they have their own category and are unrelated to the Jubilee) will repeat again, so I wouldn’t worry too much about not finishing all of the achieves this year.

I take your point about southsun, but this is a solo arena. Zero rebalancing required depending on the number of people participating. It seems very difficult to come up with a good justification for this arena being temporary. Even lore-wise:

“I, the queen, have decided to keep the arena open for the entertainment of the populace”.

Hey folks,

- tonnes of reasonable sounding stuff-

This is all well and good, Colin, but what is the advantage to the player of this content appearing and disappearing?

(I’m talking specifically about the Gauntlet, not stuff like Halloween which is real-world seasonal too)

I can see how it’s advantageous to ArenaNet to have the ability to switch it on and off so it seems like we’re getting more new content in any given month. But what is the benefit to the playerbase?

I don’t mean to be combative so apologies if it comes off that way – I’m genuinely curious what you think we’re gaining from this approach as players.

We are avoiding burnout. By limiting the time we can participate, that time becomes special instead of monotonous.

I get why they want this stuff to be temporary, to get players to return and/or stick with the game, but I think, something like the Gauntlet could easily accomplish this as permanent content. It could attract new players and keep older players around because they like the challenge. Something like the challenge missions in GW1.
Or maybe it could have a shorter return date. Something like every month for a short festival weekend.

If something is fun (or – at least – rewarding) people will keep playing it. People don’t play Keg Brawl not because it’s permanent, but because it’s not especially fun.

I can understand the long-term reasoning, but that admittedly doesn’t make it any less annoying at the current moment. If you wanted to establish an “infrastructure” of repeatable content, it should’ve been mixed in with more permanent stuff along the way.

This is the first year. They spent it building their deck of recurring content which means it was all new.

Next year we should expect more permanent content since they won’t be devoting time to building new recurring content because they already have it.
