Regular bosses can be on a timer because you can just jump in when they happen. Bosses that require zergs: better take one hour to wait, or else —> overflow.

  • In order to avoid overflow, you have to stand around in the same map with nothing to do
  • Since they all seem to spawn on the hour, they overlap with Tequatl, and probably more fights in the future.

I suggest to put big boss fights on a series of pre-events instead.

I don’t care if these take 20 minutes or longer to complete. I don’t care if they require 40+ players to do. But this way players could spawn the bosses on their own time. No pointless standing around doing nothing.

—> But they did this with the Karka Queen and people aren’t doing that!

The Karka Queen has other problems (size of the required zerg, difficulty to join the zerg due to hostile environment, and the reward doesn’t quite make it worth it). With a little bit of rebalancing (safe waypoint near the boss fight, better reward, smaller zerg required) people would be doing it a lot.

—> But without a 2 hour cooldown people are going to farm these like crazy!

People only farm events that give them repeated rewards (champ train). They don’t farm events that give them rewards only once per day (fire elemental).

There could still be some cooldown after before the event could be retriggered. People do karka queen almost daily where Im from.

Karka Queen actually has very decent rewards now. Guaranteed 30 Dragonite Ore, 5+ Karka Shells, 4 Exotic Champ Bags, and a decent shot at an Exotic inscription/insignia that fetches 2g+ on the TP.

If the pre-events just weren’t such a pain to setup, I guarantee she’d be one of the most popular World Bosses.

Indeed, these timers are atrocious and completely unnecessary. You’d hardly know there was a patch if you didn’t read the notes yourself.

This please. They could maybe even add something like the Character counter for the commander event in WVW.

Realistically, they should take the bosses out of the open world and put them into an instanced (non-server-specific) boss arena. The arena could still support an open-world number of players, if the boss is balanced for it. This is already what is being done with the harder bosses, effectively, so you might as well accept that it works for the players and work with it.

You could still have the pre-events in the same open world areas on each server to open up access, then let players enter and try the boss as much as they want, no timers, so long as the way is open. If there is an issue with farming, address it from the reward side (DR, time-gating, whatever) or tweak the difficulty to reduce the success rate. Don’t arbitrarily restrict access to challenging and enjoyable content, especially for players that might already have a window for play shorter than three hours.

Of course, if I was doing it like that, I wouldn’t put any WPs in the boss arena — once everyone dies, GAME OVER. l2r(ez). That would help difficulty right there, without being an explicit DPS check in the way that a timer is.

That would be helpful.

Someone else suggested that the boss fight (or its pre-events) automatically trigger once a certain number of people are in the area. I like that idea, too.

Anything really, as long as I don’t have to waste an hour in the map per boss fight ‘queuing up’.

Just think how amazing theme parks would be if you could just do the rides, without the lining up for an hour per 3 minute ride.

Yes to everything Pixel said! Pre-event mechanics was in GW2 since launch, it worked, it should have stayed that way.

They don’t have enough time to do complex pre-events. I wish tehy take more time and create some good content, take 2-3months for it but in the meantime other teams can do some litle balance updates or updates for Wvwvw and pvp, so that PVE team will have enough time for good PVE content.

But i give a + to spliting zerg into big groups and not giving loot for pre event champions.

It is going in the right way i think, we need good and complex events – events with different endings – non linear.

timer is an issue for all the above, no doubt about it.
but timer is also a reference point in order to get a big group of loosely related player that need to be coordinated and organized, answering/addressing the very first step of coordination and organization: when does things start.
i think about espionage movies “synchronize yours watch, we’ll meet there at the hour X!”… without timers when exactly the hour X will be???

Yes to infinity. It is NOT fun standing around doing nothing until the boss finally spawns, have to play games on my iphone while I wait. Having to entertain yourself while playing a game, yeah … how about not.

I dislike this idea, but hopefully my explanation will save me from being tarred and feathered :) I’m a busy person, with things to do in the evening when I get home and obligations on the weekend. Having these events on the hour means I know I can go heat up my dinner and come back and not be dead in the middle of an event, I can do laundry without fearing that a sudden influx of players will rush along the pre-events, etc.

Would these pre-events be on a timer? If so, then what’s the difference? You’re just adding a superfluous 15 minute fetch/slay quest in for no real reason. We would all still be standing around waiting for the pre-event the same way we do for the boss.

From what I saw last night and have experienced of Tequatl, it takes the commanders 10-20 minutes to do head counts and get the lanes/wurm groups even, anyways. I think a pre-event would be way too hectic, especially for people who have never done it before and are in need of their commanders /say-ing or TS-ing the mechanics and strategy to them. Good commanders will still do this for Tequatl, even.

On the “on the hour” timing, you can hop back and forth between even and odd hour bosses, if you’re willing to give up your spot in the main/specific OF. Which is what I did last night, and had more fun than I thought possible. I never had to stand around waiting 2 hours for something to spawn because I knew something else was spawning in the off-hour.

Unfortunately, none of this helps with the “I don’t even get to fight on my own server unless I wait for three hours for a 15 minute fight” element :\ But that’s a bigger issue than the timing of the bosses in and of themselves, methinks.

No, the pre-events would not necessarily on timers; at least not on hourly ones. Maybe starting the event chain would be possible 10 minutes after the main fight finished, or 15, or whatever.

The point is that players would be able to decide themselves when (and how often) is a good time to do the boss fight. If the pre-event chains would go on for a while (there is plenty of different ways to add countdown timers to dynamic events, as we all know), other players would be able to join the group and partake, or not.

The other point is that ANet said that more boss fights would get a re-design a la Teq soon – now if they all spawn on the hour, they’ll all just overlap. So you can’t hop from boss to boss. You can do either Teq or the Marionette. Right now, in order to do all three boss fights in one day, you have to be online 3 hours – 45 minutes of which you actively play, over two hours of which you just kill time, being stuck in one map, hoping that you don’t DC or be kicked for idling.
There is no flexibility there. You know why I play a game that advertised dynamic events? So I have the flexibility.

One problem with the overflows right now is that everybody could just as well show up five minutes before the boss fight, but since everybody’s panicky about losing their spot, people (for Teq at least) showed up earlier and earlier and earlier. If boss fights were triggered by dynamic events, this wouldn’t happen and remove the biggest reason why people don’t want to do them.

Secondly, of course, the boss fights should scale down properly so the minimum requirements would not equal a full map. Right now, Teq requires 80 or so people; I believe the map is full when you hit 100. So IF people actually show up for the fight, the creation of overflows is inevitable and some people WILL be left behind. If Teq was doable with 40+ players (but roughly the same difficulty for each group size – that’s what scaling is supposed to achieve, right?) then overflows wouldn’t automatically mean that you might just as well go and play something else.

Players should be listened to in the event that events aren’t working as intended.

Any time players must stand around for even ten minutes, the frustration can be felt in teamspeak and in map chat.

It’s time to implement your suggestion and start taking the best of all suggestions and use them in this game as to better the game not break it continually.

I’m convinced that the ArenaNet took this under consideration at some point during development. How couldn’t they?

Really, this seems more like a question of why they chose to drop the idea in the first place. I’d like to know their reasoning.

I think it may have had to do something with this train of thought:

“If everybody wants to do this, let’s give them a clear schedule, so they don’t have to wait through ‘windows’ like for the old boss fights. This way, they know exactly when to show up.”

Sort of backfired since you have to wait around for an hour anyway or end up in overflow.

… but I’m just assuming.
