RNG - Please stop Anet.
Wait what?
Where did you see that there are upcoming RNG chests and stuff?
Can you link it?

I must admit, I’m particularly disappointed. Usually they give us a month or two to calm down after the RNG boxes.
Notice the skins this time are also account-bound, much like the Fusion weapons. I have a bad feeling…

Looks like little to no effort went into them.
If it really is another BLC scam its gonna flop, cause noone will go for those.
Well mby the GS :P

So I saw the post with descriptions of all the new items including RNG chests
Can we please not have these? I would rather not see the items in the game at all than have them through wallet grabbing luck chests. Seriously. We have had enough RNG for a while. Make it stop. Even if you go through with it, make sure everything is tradeable. That’s the least you can do to the people spending gems on it.
No one likes your lucky chests. We like fixed prices or obtainability through play. The exact description:
Get packed for the return to Southsun Cove. An assortment of souvenirs from the Southsun islands. This chest contains Southsun crafting materials and a chance to get a wide variety of items such as shoulder skins, new boosts and conveniences, and a rare chance to get new weapon skins and mini pets.
No one wants chances or rare chances in something we buy with our real life cash. If you must, make the items expensive, but let us buy the items. You know you will have people complaining after “OMG having openened 100 chests, no mini!!1!” anyway.
If they made the skins more expensive, people would still complain. Besides, I don’t think any regular player is buying the BLC chests, anyhow. I’d guess that it’s only the collectors and possibly people who want to corner the market on rare items.
Those weapons are really, really ugly, I don’t mind if those are in the chests.
I stopped spending gems/cash/gold on RNG chests after the Halloween event, and I’m glad I did because those new skins are pretty terrible. (Still no love for hammers, I see.)
No one likes RNG chests, ArenaNet.

You’d be surprised.
For some people, playing the lottery is really too tempting to resist. (I have evidence of this sitting next to me almost every day.)
I wish ANet wouldn’t rely on this method to make money.
But people need to pay rent I guess… even ANet employees.

No more RNG Chests…
It’s bad enough you don’t have any decent unlockable rifles or pistols, but the half decent ones are in RNG boxes.

ArenaNet gotta eat
I just don’t understand why they can’t use friendlier alternatives; There are always better ways than plain RNG.
1: Using fixed prices
2: Make items tradeable (The new stuff might be, if not, it is my request for anet)
3: Use a feelgood ticket system – Didn’t get that minipet in 5, 10, 15 attempts? Well now you have 15 tickets, go trade it in for the mini.

Yeah, I’m pretty bummed I couldn’t get any of the fused weapon skins. I would definitely have bought most of them if the skins were offered straight up in the gem store like with the Wintersday and the Braham/Rox weapon skins.
+1 on the RNG hate.
Anet i dont understand, you nailed this issue with the quiver/bow/mace/shield skin… Dont take a step backwards now.

I’m more amazed at how anet has had no issues with gambling laws. Call it a gear/gold sink if you will, but throw in the ability to use real money to purchase items and gold, add all the underage players and we’re gonna have a brand new generation of gambling addicts by next patch.

I was wondering about this for a while. in my country every institution with any form of gambling (casinos, lottery etc) have to be specifically certified by the state and it isn’t easy. it’s being checked that know gamblers with a problem can’t enter (if they’ve been sent to a psychiatrist i.e. by a court), that the games are not rigged and more. now an online game company can take all the money they like (no limits at all), nobody checks if the chances are as they say (if they ever do) and people with an addiction are neither stopped nor discouraged from putting in more money while they destroy their lives.
it’s pretty much the lowest form of moneymaking: taking it from the weakest, no matter how they will ultimately pay (guess what happens if an addict has to decide between rent an his addiction).
Can’t view the images so I can’t really speak to the quality of the weapons, but I definately don’t like that they’re doing yet another set of untradable RNG chest weapons.
The current fused skins haven’t even finished, immediately adding another set seems a bit excessive, even beyond my usual dislike for gamble chests.
It also seems to be a poor choice in terms of Southsun itself. The place needs some additional content, and while the announced extra dynamic events will help, having a unique weapon set either drop from enemies or crafted from components dropped by Southsun enemies would further the goal of drawing people to the area. And would make the place seem more complete. Seems like a wasted opportunity to shove them in RNG chests which have no impact on Southsun Cove itself.

Do you think they are paying the rent or building a gold plated toilet at this point? I’m pretty sure the game makes healthy profits without resorting to these kinds of greasy store tactics.

To be fair I do not know if they are tradeable yet. But being loud at the forum is the only way to maybe do some impact before the chests are shipped.. And Anet as I know them are not the ones to just change things.
Edit: Previewing the weapons does say account bound though Anet pls.
call me thick but what does RNG stand for?
call me thick but what does RNG stand for?
Random Number Generator.
I really liked the concept of the Adventure Box rewards. You could get a tradeable weapon skin in a chest in one of the zones, but you could also trade the spheres for the same, but account bound, weapon skins. I hope we will see more of this concept. I like it far better than a 0,02% chance for a jetpack and mini in a 12-day limited dungeon…

thankie for your clarification helped lots
Does ArenaNet have a gambling license?
Cause it sure feels like we’re gambling with these boxes (and with real money).
Agreed this game is losing its appeal faster than Tabula rasa and Star wars Galaxies did..

Regardless of how stupid it may be, I’m pretty sure gambling laws only apply if you have a chance to win back real money.
The law really hasn’t caught up with the internet, somehow.

It’s sad when players feel LUCKY to spend over $20 for a few weapon skins. Even sadder when others spend $50+ and get none lol.
I spent 500 gems on the Primeval set because it was good value to me. The Braham and Rox skins were pretty tempting, if they packaged them together as a set for some savings I probably would have done it.
For every person they burn with chest RNG they are losing out on future sales, this can’t be a sustainable model for very long.
Yeah SAB rewards were perfect: Minimal grind required to get a nice looking piece of equipment of your choice. RNG boxes are for suckers, but there’s a sucker born every minute and they’re ALL on the internet, so I can’t blame a.net for taking their money. I mean, if someone out there is willing to literally give up hundreds of dollars to get a few pixels in a video game, more power to them, sucker.
If the skins and pets went up in the gem store, I’d buy them if I liked how they looked. For example, as cool as the fused skins are, I didn’t try for them. But I bought Braham’s shield for my norn guardian. I don’t buy keys, I’ve tried two sets of keys in the past and have since given up. Any keys I use now are the ones I’ve found or gotten as leveling rewards on my alts.
Altaholic, can never have just one!

Same. I have never ever bought a Black Lion chest and never will. It’s not because I don’t like what’s in them. But if i spend my real money on them, I want to know what I am buying. Even if expensive I might consider some of the items.
ArenaNet gotta eat
They made millions just selling the game.
Besides, this is about the “AND A SMALL CHANCE TO GET ITEM X” thing. There was no RNG with real money in GW1, there shouldn’t be in GW2.
Maybe Nexon thinks RNG cash shops are a good idea, but the other part of the world thinks it’s stupid.
Yeah I’d like to have something to show for other than a good time!
Well, I’ve had a chance to preview the codes listed by Kain earlier in the thread, and… zero interest in them. They look decently well designed, but I am not at all a fan of the creepy living weapon thing. I’d actually like the general design of the weapons minus the eyes, they have a neat sort of an insect shell appearence to them, but… yah, the eyes ruin ’em. The mace is the only good one (and thats because no eyes :p).
However, I looked at the Reddit link also posted by Kain and noticed something…. they’re listing 2 DIFFERENT chests with rare RNG weapons. One for Southsun Cove souvenier chests, and one for a Dragon Festival of some sort. If those are 2 different sets of weapons and both going to be account-bound and rare… egads, way overboard with the RNG weapon skins Anet. Seriously.

Gambling laws usually refer to people winning/gambling actual money. New York has anti gambling laws, but you can still go to a carnival and spin a wheel and get a stuffed animal.

If I’m not mistaken you can look up Dragon Festival in GW1
Agreed with the OP. I have never and will never spend money on these stupid RNG chests. They are one of the lowest, most despicable ways to earn profits, preying on those too weak to restrain their gambling impulses. Yes, I know ANet has to pay the bills somehow, but there are much more consumer friendly ways (such as selling items directly) that will earn you goodwill, respect, & ultimately more money in the long run.
How you go about making money is what separates companies like CD Projekt RED & Valve from companies like Zynga & EA. It’s just food for thought, but EA’s business practices got them voted the worst company in America by popular vote for two years running.

I hate RNG when it comes to stuff like this, I bought 20ish black lion keys and got nothing.
Then typically I got one for a daily and got the flame and frost weapon skin.
It’s not technically gambling. You always get something for your money, even if it’s not what you wanted.
I’m sure Anet/NCSoft have actual lawyers who look into this stuff…

You can’t sell Fused Weapons, so there’s really no market to corner there. At least if they were sellable I’d be able to grind for gold and buy one even. Can’t even do that.
I’d be happy if I got one free skin for my account for completing the whole FOUR MONTH story arc. Just one. The molten gauntlets just don’t cut it for me. They don’t seem to be part of an armour set and feels like a fob-off. One of the few weapon skins I really like in the game is Molten and I can’t manage to get one for myself. I’d even spend Laurels on these things.

Do you know what I think when I view those skins? “Thank god I don’t like them, it wont feel as sucky when I don’t receive one.” I shouldn’t be made to think this. I shouldn’t be made to be thankful that I wouldn’t want a special skin anyway just because RNG probably wont be favourable to me.
Sucks.

Do you think if their lawyers look hard enough they’ll eventually see the myriad of pretty hacked off players? Nah, didn’t think so.

While there is some way from Anet to Zynga and EA, I do hope that Anet realizes this, cause you have a very good point.
They had better be tradable.
Real money cost + RNG + account bound is too much risk for too litter reward and just seems like a fumbled attempt to squeeze every bit of profit from idiot players.
If it costs real money it should be a straight sale IMO. It’s a bit boring but most people seem happy with it.
Alternatively it could be acquired through in-game RNG, but then should be tradable so you don’t get frustrated players stuck with items they don’t want and/or can’t use and yet more frustrated players who lost out completely.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
I don’t mind the RNG. If people want it, they will spend for it.
Stay the course, Arenanet.

Even if you are okay with the RNG, wouldn’t you want all the excess junk you didn’t want to be tradeable?
I know you guys have a marketing manager from some f2p company like nexon or something but this is getting ridiculous. Just sell the skins straight up on cash shop, don’t fill your game with more rng crap. Until then I’m not spending any more money on those rng boxes.

When they say rare, that translates to “dream on, you’re not going to get one”.
Don’t bother to thank them for that.
I just bought 10 crates for 1200 gems and got out 2g worth of crafting mats. tyvm anet
(Reposted from a thread in the General section.)
Ever been in a convenience store and watched someone who, frankly, looks like their money would be better spent on the basic necessities rather than the state lottery buy scratch ticket after scratch ticket after scratch ticket?
I get the same sort of vaguely sick feeling every time I hear people throw money at these keys.
If people stopped doing it, maybe things would change, but as it stands right now it seems like every time they come out with a new set of chests with a “rare chance for something cool!” people can’t get their credit cards out of their wallets fast enough despite months worth of evidence showing that the odds of actually getting something are vastly skewed again them.
And lest you think this an anti-cash shop rant, I’d be more than happy to pay $10 for an outfit or a cool weapon skin I couldn’t otherwise get. But to gamble for it? No way.
(Well, ok, maybe not “more than happy to”, but certainly willing to.)
