Yeah, the profit goes to NCsoft who then decide what to do with it. Because the profit from the gem store in GW2 was so good, they decided to use that money to fund an expansion for the game which I guess would in turn equal more profit?
You should read more closely. they already said that was a misunderstanding and no expansion is currently in the works.
In fact, if gem shop income is that good, then all that income will buy us is even more of the RNG boxes.
YOU should read more closely. I said that NCsoft said that profits were enough that they decided to fund an expansion, I at no time said there was one in the works.
Okay, let me rephrase that. You should read more closely, they already said that they were misunderstood and they are still in the process of watching and deciding whether an expansion will happen or not. They haven’t decided anything yet.
And ofcourse more RNG boxes will come. I hope they do, too. More greatswords for me to collect.
If you get lucky. Eventually you won’t.
See guys, if everyone had the skin it wouldn’t have that rarity to it. What would be the point if everyone had the same skin? It’s much more rewarding having a rare item than an item everyone has.
How so? it’s not like you can sell them – and they are generally quite ugly, so only a tiny minority would use them anyway.

LOL what a nice whine tread. im got 3 tickets from chests….. im farmed around 50+ from events mobs
That’s the point dude, you wouldn’t be so smug if you had the terrible luck most people seem to be getting.
I love how people can sit back and call other people whiners when they got lucky and are sitting on the complete opposite end of the scale, and have no chance for empathy in the situation.
But feel free to drop in again for some more useless info.
A guild mate spent 700g on 150 crates in the gem store. He didn’t get a single ticket.
And still Arenanet Devs are quiet about this, meanwhile playerbase is kitten off that weapons are next to impossible to get for RNG, why have designers doing weapons if it’s going to be like this, to milk more the cow?
Jeez. This is getting absurd, let’s see the Dragon Bash.
Dragon Bash has yet more RNG skins.
What would be the point if everyone had the same skin?
I really despise people like you, so I’m gonna keep it very short lest we end up trading insults: Having the kittening skin.
I like the skin. I feel comfortable about my kitten size and don’t need something others don’t have to wave around as a vicarious way to feel special. I just want the skin, because I like it. I don’t care if everyone under the sun has it or if I’m the only person ever. I care that I want it. I want to have it for me. Hell, if you tell me I can press one button and everyone, myself included, gets all of those, fine! I’ll press it so fast I’ll leave skid marks on the kittening thing.
@Topic: Over 50 crates, nothing. kitten it. I refuse to dump money into a lottery. If they sell it for gems, I’ll buy it. Not crates.
I admit it, I bought crates for my husband and I on the first day they were available. He got a weapon ticket on the very first crate he opened. And not one after that.
Me….well I’ve opened probably near 100 crates (some bought, some drops) and not one bloody ticket. I just want one of the skins….Yeah I’d love to have the sword/torch combo but it’s looking like I won’t even be able to get one.
I’m going to finish the event achievements, but I give up. My drop rate sucks as is so I don’t think I’ll ever get a ticket now.
The first day of the event my drop rate was nice. The risk vs. reward was perfect. I wasn’t getting rares or exotics every time I opened a ‘gator chest, but it was just enough to keep me going. Since that first patch, I’m lucky to get rares. I wander all over the island and I kill everything. I think I’ve gotten maybe 5-8 of the southsun crates to drop….and they’re all the same fruit/shell/flowers.
I’m disappointed but not surprised.

That’s life get over it, I’m sure you wish everyone won the lottery too.
That’s life get over it, I’m sure you wish everyone won the lottery too.
I’ll make sure to consider that next time I respawn and do magic IRL. Or next time some comes along and defies the laws of thermodynamics by creating things from nothing.
If I wanted more “life” I wouldn’t be playing a game.
I tried to edit my comment (on page #4) but could not, probably because the additional content makes the comment too long – so I’m forced to add it here:
** Edit
To substantiate my above use of the severe term, “anti-consumer”:
Disclaimer: I possess no expert knowledge in economics. It is not the intent of my writing to persuade the reader I do or otherwise am an authority on the subject. I am merely a layman wishing to exchange ideas. I will forego prefixing sentences with “In my opinion”, as it is my hope that is understood.
In the marketplace – both physical and virtual – consumers and producers engage in exchanges of value. For consumers, “value” typically means money, as it does in this discussion. A given exchange is “fair” when the items (money and products/services)
are of comparable value. Products and services may carry premiums above their base values, but trades are still fair given the limitation that all premiums are both reasonable and justifiable.
An exchange that is anti-consumer is one in which the received good is of substantially lower value than the consumer expects (The relation between consumer expectation and how producers use it is not a trivial one, so I encourage anyone responding who might chastise consumers to bear that in mind).
I’ll need to briefly speak on how to quantify the value of a virtual item against real life currency because the critical point in my argument is a comparision of value. How much is a virtual weapon skin worth? Well, it’s whatever this game’s producer says it is. And here’s what they’ve said:
The value of a Sclerite weapon skin is based on an undisclosed statistical model. A random number generator produces a number that conforms to this model, once every time a supply crate is opened. Hence, the “exchange of value between a consumer and producer” paradigm no longer applies. You are not exchanging money for goods (value for value), but betting money against a mathematical function of undisclosed properties.
We do not have technical specifications on how model works, but do have empirical data around us to aid us in determining its obvious properties. This data is present in the player reports on these forums but also and importantly, in the game itself: How many people do you see running around with the Sclerite skins? Does that give you any clues as to how the model is skewed – Toward fairness or unfairness to the consumer?
An additional problem, and of gravest concern: There is no constraint on the number of crates required to be opened before getting a weapon skin ticket. Sure, you might buy ten crates and get three tickets, but is that the average outcome? Looking around in the world of Tyria will support or contest the hypothesis. What do you see out there?
So, in addressing the average case, as opposed to Joe Lucky, I believe that the statistical model that we’re being offered to bet our money against is neither pro-consumer or fair. And as I mentioned above, what is occurring cannot be described as an exchange of value: On one side of the table is a consumer holding value and on the other side you have chance, which might incidentally yield value. That is called gambling and as far as I can tell, is heavily favoring the house. That is why I’d used the word “anti-consumer”, though a misuse of the word as I’ve admitted. I should have said “The house is stacked against you.” To be sure, they do not hide this fact from you, “a rare chance”, as present in the crate’s description is significant beyond how we typically use and mean the word in a gaming context.
Of course, you can circumvent these problems by simply not participating in the business model. The question is: Can you? Will you?
But having said all of that, I’ve gotta admit: GW2 sure is a fun game! Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to be in Southsun.

LOL what a nice whine tread. im got 3 tickets from chests….. im farmed around 50+ from events mobs
You know some people really want to have that skin, including me. You wouldn’t act like this if it wasn’t for your incredible luck…
I’m farming since day one 5+ hours every day, sold every item i have and bought a kittenton of crates from the gemshop with gold. I haven’t made a break since the event launched in may.
300+ crates – not a single ticket.
I really wanted the staff skin. So much infact, i converted all of my 160g for gems to get crates. I’ve probably opened around 60+ crates, and not one single ticket. Infact, the only decent thing i got from those crates was one Mini Southsun Faren.
Does Anet really expect me to spend real money on gems to get crates whilst the droprate is terrible? I felt annoyed spending all of my gold trying to get a ticket, i have no idea how i would feel if i had spent real money. Well at least this has taught me one thing, never by gems from the store with real cash.
I don’t mind gambling (my household has survived off poker and blackjack winnings often enough), but ANet, the odds are too steep and it’s offputting. I spend money in the cash shop, but the crates’ RNG is just too stacked against the player to have me justify buying these, and it’s frustrating because I want to support y’all as well as get these skins.
Can we still exchange for the skin after the 11 of june?
Just got a ticket from my 12th farmed chest.. honestly I’d love to just give it away to someone or sell it but of course, that’d be too easy. I don’t even like the skins gw2firstworldproblem
Which skins are people buying?
I was lucky enough to get a ticket, but can’t pick out a skin I like.
In the end, if enough people buy RNG boxes with gems, then Anet/NCSoft will continue the RNG model. NCSoft is a public company so the ONLY THING THEY CARE ABOUT IS MAKING MONEY. So the only way to make the RNG stop is to not buy RNG boxes.
Anyway, it’s kind of foolish to buy crates because you don’t even know the odds! If you knew the odds, you could at least do a bit of probability to estimate how many crates you need to buy in order to (more or less) ensure a ticket; and thus you could assign a gem value to the tickets; and thus you would be able to make an informed decision as to whether the skins are worth that gem value. However, you don’t know the odds, so it’s crazy to buy these crates!
Anyway, here’s my solution to the RNG issue.. I think it’s one that would satisfy both players and Anet (others have made very similar suggestions):
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/livingworld/southsun/Solution-to-RNG-skin-issue/2036322
An (almost functionally equivalent) alternative to the above would be if Anet releases the odds of getting a ticket from a crate (because again, you could calculate how many crates you need to buy in order to (pretty much) guarantee a ticket). However, I don’t see this happening at all.
TLDR: Don’t gamble when you don’t know the odds. Follow link for solution to RNG boxes.
Which skins are people buying?
I was lucky enough to get a ticket, but can’t pick out a skin I like.
I was lucky enough to get 2 skins (out of fewer than 30 boxes)… got a dagger to replace my ugly pearl-skinned one; and the shield because that eye is huge and therefore awesome. Don’t really like most of the skins because they are too symmetrical.
Finally got my ticket after farming 75-100 crates. Falls in line with the speculated 1%. Good luck in the last few days to anyone still trying to get one. Next week it starts all over again with dragon skins.
I admit it, I bought crates for my husband and I on the first day they were available. He got a weapon ticket on the very first crate he opened. And not one after that.

You know what? I have a ticket I could give a rats kitten about. I wanted a mini Kasmeer but only got 6 crates to drop during this whole event with farming & events for 2-4 hours almost every day with 230-370ish mf (various characters).
very irritating.

School of thought #1: “I truly believe with every fiber of my being that everyone in the game is paying attention to my avatar whenever I’m around, and spending time + energy processing how cool my equipment looks. How can they not, for I am the center of the universe and the specialists of snowflakes.”
That’s a lot of judgement for one italicized paragraph.
And yet, disturbingly accurate!

- I can’t sell the ticket
- I can’t trade it in for a mini
- I can’t sell the weapon skin
- I can’t afford a mini kasmeer on the market unless I go run cof p1 35 times or so.

This. I was ‘blessed’ with a ticket from a random crate drop. I have no desire for the ticket and no method to get it to someone who really cares about them. Account bound is lame.

My boyfriend was lucky and got both a Molten skin drop and a Sclerite one. He felt bad because neither dropped for me (although I play more). He says he would’ve given me his Sclerite ticket to make up for it if he could.
The reverse happened to us with the SAB – I got two skin drops, a greatsword one which I sold and a scepter one which I gave to him (as none of the skins ever dropped for him). And that worked for us.

This sums it up – RNG to a point, but this is ridiculous.
People will be willing to BUY these items off the gem store like Rox’s quiver etc.
If you’re that worried about these items being rare, you can still make them be tradeable, because people will charge a ton of gold for them.
So some options – PLEASE implement one for the Dragon’s Jade weapon skins:
1. Make the skins/tickets tradeable
2. Allow a secondary method to attain the tickets/weapons (even if it was 2000 karka shells!)
3. Get rid of RNG all together, and sell the items on the gem store (even if it was 800 gems!)
4. Make them a rare drop, not a rare loot from a rare drop chest!
You’re kitten ing so many people off – this can’t be your intended experience.
I understand if this is about the money, but there are other ways to implement this so that you can still make money off of the gem store without kitten ing people off.
I just hope TESO doesn’t rip their customers off like this when it’s released..
This whole RNG experience for these skins has really left a sour taste in my mouth with this game and ANET all together. I’m MASSIVE on aesthetics. The staff skin would really suit my necromancer and i really want it, but i can’t have it…because i refuse to take part in this RNG ripoff. Converted all of my gold, and farmed like crazy and ended up with around 60+ crates and not one single ticket. If the RNG is that bad, then i will not spend real money on luck. Why bother even spending real money on the crates when i hear people reporting that have opened 200+ crates and have no ticket?
I would have spent around £20 for the skin upright from the store. If ANET continues to go down this route with RNG being the only way for the playerbase to obtain exclusive skins then i will simply go to another MMO.

Would really like an official response here.
There are several responses to smaller threads in the Southsun forum section, but this thread has top 3 number of replies in it, and no official comments.
Also, note, that there are at least 2 more threads in this forum section with 175+ replies on the same topic.
ArenaNet, we need some answers.
I made a suggestion here. Hopse someone will see it.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/suggestions/Sclerite-Weapon-Claim-Ticket-Acquisition
TL:DR: Please add the tickets as a very rare drop from the daily Karka Queen chest.
I don’t want to make the skins common, I understand that being rare makes them valuable, so keeping them as a very rare drop from the karka queen will still retain their value(since you can’t farm them with a chest that can be looted just once per day per account) and at the same time those who didn’t got lucky with a ticket can still hope about getting one in the future.
Good idea – but I don’t think it will solve anything.
Adding a very rare RNG chance in a second chest to the very rare RNG chance from the crates just means disappointment from two sources.
You know what? I have a ticket I could give a rats kitten about. I wanted a mini Kasmeer but only got 6 crates to drop during this whole event with farming & events for 2-4 hours almost every day with 230-370ish mf (various characters).

And yet I have a mini Kasmeer that I really don’t care about and will likely sell once the price goes up and still no ticket. I got about 5-6 crates to drop yesterday and nothing but a leftover shoulder skin from the first Southsun event and the same old mats.
That’s some serious magic-coding to give people the thing they don’t want and withhold that one thing we really want.
What I would really love is tradeable tickets(or skins). If I get lucky and get more tickets than I want then I can sell it for some profit. And If I really want a ticket, but I have really bad luck I can save some money and buy one from someone who has extras. Win-Win for both sides. If that would be possible I’d have no problem with RNG. Like halloween skins. They were based on RNG but at the same time tradeable, If I really want a skin i can save money and get it even if i have really really bad luck.
But I doubt that will happen. So i’d rather have hope that I might get a skin someday than not getting one ever at all.
OR even better would be if they would make them like wintersday skins: 500gems per skin in the gemstore for a limited time, but this might make them more common than some people want.
For the Lost Shores event, I was not fortunate enough to obtain any of the exclusive skins via RNG. BUT, I was able to buy skins off the exchange by purchasing gems and converting to gold. Woot! Win, win—I can support the game and get some cool bling. Furthermore, I bought both of Rox’s and Braham’s weapons sets (even though I don’t even have toons to use them yet). Happy camper. But ANet seems to disagree. With the Fused and Sclerite weapons being account bound, I have spent far less money that I would have otherwise.
I cannot bring myself to purchase even one RNG box, but would gladly pony up real dough to buy something outright from the exchange/gem store. Guess I’m not saying anything new here. …Except that I think the RNG is poisoning the community, not just here on the forums but in-game as well. If the Sclerite weapons were even $20 each, the average player would maybe purchase one or two, but never all 10! As for “prestige,” with time, new skins will seem shinier than older skins and there would be a nice spread—not every player would have the same thing.
So, to whom it may concern, I am a loyal player. But I will not gamble with RNG. And since this seems to your favorite modus operandi, I think I’ll take a break from the game and go play a single player game or something. I like Tyria. I’m just not sure about ANet.
I agree, I think this is the way to go – if you insist on keeping RNG, allow us to attain the items on the TP by having the skins be tradeable.
I’m done with the RNG gambling too
Anything that comes purely from RNG and I cannot buy what drops out of the RNG box directly from the AH, or the cash shop with gems does not exist in my mind.
I say keep it if it’s making anet good money, it has no effect on me, but do not neglect other players who are not willing to spend money on essentially nothing. We should get tons of cool skins too.
Other players need to think the same way if you are unwilling to spend money on gambling for skins, just let anet make tons of money off stupid people and ignore they exist.
I think the extent of it (and most I assume would agree), people are more likely and willing to drop straight up cash for a weapon/armor skin rather than play the lottery.
You have to wonder, exactly how much money might they have made if they allowed these very skins to be directly purchasable.
So for 4 days of farming karkas and other mobs on this island im have 50-60 Boxes…. and 4 Tickets from them. Nerf it =////
Rng is rng even if this post is a spiteful jab at people who aren’t as lucky.

Most hilarious post I’ve seen in a very long time. RNG loves you like no other in this game, I think. Let’s try 20 days of farming on SSC with a grand total of 6 boxes dropping only mats.
I farm for 4 days and get 4 crates, and of course no ticket. This game is really unbalanced.
I haven’t seen a single crate during this event never mind a ticket. Be glad you have been blessed by the fickle rng and just trash the tickets you don’t want since they can’t be sold.
230+ crates with no ticket is whining? You’re kidding, right?
For gamble boxes to be even remotely legit to me, they need a streak-breaker mechanic where you get 1 ticket for every 5 that give you nothing, so you don’t spend over $7.50 for 1 effing weapon skin. But it’s too profitable to do that.
just sucks cuz ANET wasn’t like this before.
I can’t believe we even have to argue about this. REWARDS should be in the game so you have GOALS. The idea that you just pay cash (nevermind RANDOM AMOUNTS of cash) to get an in-game reward boggles my mind.
As long as a few fools will pay $100’s for “lottery” tickets, these things will show up forever…kind of like those worthless Black lion chests where no keys drop, so a few throw money at keys, but nothing good is in there….most just delete then.
This is what happens when the industry goes “free”-to – play …and it’s our own fault if we support the concept.

I just opened 69 chests from grinding pretty hardcore over the past 2 weeks and didn’t get a single weapon ticket. In the 1st few days I grinded 20 additional crates and only got flowers fruits and shells.
I thought if I would of had at least 3 times as many crates from the 1st time I opened the 20 I would at least of got 1 ticket let alone the 3 tickets I would of liked.
I would just like to express my extreme displeasure of the rng crate for weapon skins. This feels like aion all over again but not as brutal. Guildwars 2 has the pve going for it that’s it and when you alienate the majority of the playerbase like this things are going to go down hill.
To me this feels like the horrible practices of Ncsoft at work but it’s a shame it is being done with the Arenanet tag. I would of gladly payed a set amount of money for the skins.
I’m soon close to 350 crates, still haven’t seen a single skin.
ok
I dont like skins and the RNG crates doesn’t bother me at all, not because I don’t like the skins, it just I won’t and don’t pay for RNG , but If I happen to find one it’s like a win for me, same as finding exotics, it’s all a bonus.
However.
The chance of finding a ticket appears to be so remote that it’s just silly now even a little dishonest. The event it almost over and people are still unlucky/unhappy.
Ncsoft/Anet should have taken a leaf from Willy Wonkas book and stated “We have hidden 5 sclerite tickets in crates”. Then even the Veruka Salt’s amonst us would have been able to make a more informed choice.
I’m soon close to 350 crates, still haven’t seen a single skin.
That freaking sucks.
I’m soon close to 350 crates, still haven’t seen a single skin.
I would be quitting the game if I were you.
That’s ridiculous – I’d be so kitten ed
Heh…I’ve only seen 3 crates …what are you farming to get so many?
