I consider my self a hardcore gamer in that I need a challenge to enjoy any game. I love the dungeons except for the skippable parts because they increase the challenge. However I don’t think the regular world exploration part of the game is challenging enough. You can easily bypass enemies. You are never feeling any threat from any enemies. And it feels more like a grind to do PvE world than a challenge since you don’t need much skill to kill the enemy.

I do realize however that this game is designed for the casuals too. So that is why I suggest to do a hardcore mode at player creation which would put the player in a hardcore server where the new hardcore rules and higher stats enemies would appear. In even mentioning this there is a lot of changes that would have to be implemented in order for this mode not to affect in any way the regular mode. So here are some suggestions of what it would offer and what changes I believe should be made.

-There should be friendly fire for both ranged attacks and meele attacks. This would force people to think about position even more, force people to think more when using certain kinds of skills for fear of hurting allies, and possibly force the use of teamspeak or some other chat software. (Possibly make an exemption for combo fields.)

-Enemies stats should be much higher quite possibly like the stats of enemies in a dungeon. Makes the world harder.

-Make sure that there is a system in place to make sure you cannot just run through enemies to get from one place to the other.

-Players should be able to target others in the world and attack them if they want. Not only will you have to worry about enemies but also about bands of villainous players and maybe even force communication between players to gauge intentions.

-Items and gold should be rarer(harder to get). There reason for this is that farming should be harder to make the acquisition of items more rewarding. However this would mean that the trading post would have to be separate and there should be no transfers between regular and hardcore accounts. (or possibly just have a hardcore label on items on which regular items cannot be used in the hardcore world)

The benefits are that hardcore players that have gathered all the best armor completed the world or achieved the legendary weapons would have something more to achieve that cannot be done by themselves. If enough people would want this it would create more revenue for Anet as the players in the new mode might want to purchase more gems to make their experience in the new unforgiving mode more forgivable.

There will be some problems in the implementation of the WvWvW aspect in respect for this mode as I believe it would also have to be separate from a non hardcore mode.

I ask the community to share their views or maybe even different implementations.

Servers are account bound by nature for the WvW content, and I doubt they’d make a server that wasn’t intended to participate in WvW since that’s a third of the game they’re trying to market.

So if you’re asking for hardcore servers it’d prolly be an account move you’d have to make not a character creation selection choice. That being said I am appreciative that for once someone isn’t asking for PvP in PvE content on current servers… thanks =)

Edit – also should this hardcore server(s) have access to rarer drops – it would likely crash the market value of things as is… so I would think they would have to code a seperate hardcore TP as well.

I actually worded the rarer part wrong. What I meant is that Items are harder to come by. But yea I agree items would still have to be in a different TP.

I really don’t think we want ‘hardcore’ in this game as I’d suspect a very large percentage of the player base is under 18

In general, the PVE segment of this game is designed for the casual gamer in mind. The argument for any skill based reward is immediately called elitist and demonized as gating content, even if the reward is just a cosmetic weapon or armor skin. Until anet implements a system to reward skill without changing stats and hurting the feelings of the gem store patrons I wouldn’t hold your breath waiting for “hardcore” gratification.

Its more about the question of gamemodes in general. Economic and social considerations and more genereal feedback would be appreciated.

As long a our threads dont get merged, we can try to keep our topics fokused.

First off Alex: Thank you for makeing a suggestion and thinking about those with different needs too, not only claiming yours.

I think i know what you want for the itempart, as my first mmolove (we still date on ocasions :P) is just like this: our epic bossmobs spawn in an openworld-pvpzone (once a week), you need more than 20 people to take them down and only one gets a drop. Most of the drops are good, but some are really op on some classes. Getting a good item there can have a hole story behind it and this makes those stuff worth a lot more for the players.

One thing i would argue against is the friendly-fire, especially on combofields (imho they are desinged to be spamable increasing your teams output, while being damageskills, (de-)buffs, sometimes adding rather unique features too) without a general rework. But i admit as a player i wished for ff on numerous ocasions too. I think it could require a lot of work on the balance side as it would change the fighting dynamics pretty much. If done well, why not? I could even enjoy it.

Your ideas would make a good ground for a real hardcore mode and i do not doubt there would be players who enjoy a real challenge. In the frame i suggested it would be worth a third mode (after basic/pro).

For the elitism: If there is a large enough audience that enjoy this ruleset more than a casual one to make it pay off for anet, why not?
