I’m quite a fan of jumping puzzles (so long as I’m not on one of my norn alts), and have been wondering about jumping puzzles in other cities apart from Lion’s Arch. They seem ready made for them, and here’s some that came to mind:

- Divinity’s Reach: A jumping puzzle down the Great Collapse, jumping from planks suspended from cranes to scaffolding could work pretty well. Another idea in Divinity would be one in the central grassy garden to get us up into the moving stars and planets up there. There’s a possibility to include a view from Queen Jenna’s balcony into this one (credit to Pixelpumpkin for that one). Also credit to Pixelpumpkin for the idea of another jumping puzzle along roofs from a tavern mini-game start location.

- Black Citadel: Something around the Great Imperial Smelter (maybe with lava bursts that could block your progress – bringing timing skills into it) could work but I thought Gladium Canton would be perfect for one, lots of possibilities for ledges and beams. Credit to Pixelpumpkin and Narcemus for the idea of a puzzle up the outside of the citadel itself, perhaps with a drop down through an air conditioning vent at the top onto a floating chest platform as a slight wink in the Death Star’s direction.

- The Grove: Any puzzle in the grove would have to be pretty tree themed and it would be nice to be able to jump up high, from branch to branch, to see the Grove lying below you. It could, on the other hand, be a nature themed underground one as well. There’s already some mushroom vistas, where you climb up mushrooms to the view point, so a simple puzzle here would be a similar puzzle up one of the large central roots. Credit to Order of Venvardis for the idea of a jumping puzzle including jumping on the back of moving neutral mosshearts.

- Rata Sum: Perhaps a puzzle including jumping around the outside a little, there’s already little ledges where the outside isn’t perfectly smooth, so that’s a possibility. I think as well, with a puzzle incorporating the outside, it would be the pressure building with the huge drop below you that could really make that one a good one. Bringing Asuran technology into the puzzle is another possibility. Credit to Teraphas for another possibility, jumping around a messy lab rat’s lab, and this one could include Asuran technology into it.

- Hoelbrak: There’s possibilities to bring in the statues of the spirits into a jumping puzzle here. Perhaps the Shelter Rock caves would be a possibility as well.

I don’t think any jumping puzzles in any of the cities would require too much work and might also help some way towards making some of the quieter cities a bit busier with players. Thoughts on these, and any other suggestions would be great. I’d love to see something like some of these materialise some day.

Yea, I wouldn’t mind more jumping puzzles in areas where I don’t have to worry about the enemy killing me while I’m struggling with a jump.

I’d put some easy, medium, and hard difficulty ones in the city. Give safe places for people to practice their jumping puzzle skills. And make the racial cities busier. Especially on the days where doing a jumping puzzle is required. Or the monthlies where you need X number of jumping puzzles.

Thanks for the positive feedback guys!

I think there’s definitely space and enough interesting ideas to do more than one in each city, so maybe more than one (with one being a bit trickier than the rest) would be good, like Seera says.

Do you think it would make much difference to encouraging people out from Lion’s Arch to the other cities? I’m not sure it would made too much difference, but even a little difference would help.

I do think it would help – I do bump into players doing the WvW jumping puzzles all the time. But it depends a little how the jumping puzzles would be integrated in the city maps / where they would be located. If they were in a remote location somewhere at the edge of a map then they might not do much for city interaction, whereas a jumping track up the roof of the central inn… (you get the idea)

Rata sum would rather a new area be put in. Theme it as a pack rat asura’s lab. Wall to wall floor to cieling junk. Maybe as a twist instance it withmultiple paths and debris shiftsand falls as you work your way thru making it as much a Maze as a jp

As for horlbrak I would see something new vs a curcuit around the lodges. In typical norn style have an npc build a giant pole. And like gryphonrook you have to beat his best time to get the chest but making it period gets you the achievement. Maybe have a few platforms that rotate around the pole or are sliding in and out. Avoid rigged to drop platforms as if you run with others they can spell doom for you becuase some landed on it half a second before you

I was thinking about the integration point. I was thinking the Black Citadel has a ready made jumping puzzle in the Ruins of Nolani, but it feels separate from the Citadel and I was really hoping for puzzles that felt involved in the core of the cities. I think they’d definitely have to be integrated into the heart of the cities to work, not on the far outskirts. Generally my ideas achieved that, at least I hope so!

If it’s out in the world like the other JP’s are, the same kind of loot the others have.

If they are instanced in such a way that it prevents people from using skills to bypass the puzzle, then they can have better rewards.

And as for outskirts vs inside of the core of the city, that’s what having multiple ones are for. So that you can have jumping puzzles in both locations. Get people exploring the center of it AND the outskirts.

If I had to pick one, I would say inside the city; this would bring life to the racial capitals in the same way as mini-games might. Bring people together in focus spots and just allow for stuff to happen. (Lion’s Arch achieves this by having crafting, banks, and black lion traders all next to each other. Other cities are laid out differently and could use some “city development”.)
Example: roof-to-roof course in Divinity’s Reach, starting and/or ending at the tavern.

The most fun might ensue if jumping puzzles and mini-games were in the same location or even somewhat integrated (on a story level).
Example: Tavern JP, possible to relate it to bar brawl…? (Think the secret door/shelf in Lion’s Arch)

In addition, self-contained “outside” jumping puzzles would be awesome for making players explore areas that aren’t “downtown”.
Example: Down the Great Collapse in DR. (Awesome idea by the way, stjf!!)

But there’s really nothing to say that a jumping puzzle couldn’t be both… just look at Troll’s End in LA, starting “downtown” and taking you outside of the city, and that’s after a crazy labyrinth of a course to even get to the starting point.
Example: lengthy sightseeing tour (beyond vistas) with awesome views of the city, an obstacle course through all levels of DR. Also finding awesome locations that otherwise you wouldn’t have access to… think Jenna’s balcony.

I don’t care too much about rewards, the usual chests work fine for me; I think having some more awesome jumping puzzles would be the biggest treat for me. Well, and achievements, because I’m the sort of person who likes checking things off her checklist.

Thanks again for the support for my ideas everyone, your input helps no end as well.

I definitely think, as Seera was getting at, that there needs to be a few jumpng puzzles in each of the cities, which allows for some nailing biting ones on the outskirts of Rata Sum balanced with a relatively less nerve wracking puzzle in a messy lab in the depths of the city (with possibilities for Asura tech being involved in that). That way, as well, people can be spread out throughout the cities to give them some life back.

I definitely think the puzzle is the reward in itself and that the chests should be just like any other jumping puzzle chest.

I’ll update the OP with the new ideas for puzzles that people have put forwards and I’ll credit you for your ideas where I can.

I’m sorry but I’m greatly interested in Rata Sum having a jumping puzzle! The idea of having one going along the outside would be great, but what about having one go down into Rata Sum itself? So far the drop through the center is lethal, but I’ve actually made it down without dying before and can imagine there being little labs to work with down there (which also includes my idea that there should be more signs of Asuran housing, or maybe showing how they live in Rata Sum specifically).

Besides that, Hoelbrak would be a good place to have a jumping puzzle maybe with one of the lodges, or even better, a mountain climb!

I like the idea of there being a jumping puzzle along the Black Citadel exterior!

Well for the grove maybe something slightly humorous. Have it start by jumping into a giant hybrid flytrap pitcher plant, with some little shop of horrors winks. Then have the puzzle traversing the inside of the plant and underground and making your way back out to the surface. Ahhhh, I think the Shiverpeaks have a lot of mountain climbing already There’s already the vista at the top of Owl lodge, and the Shaman jumping puzzle explores that aspect well… I’m trying to think of something new.

Maybe something that involves the Sons of Svanir settlement a little more?
And the other idea (not mine) was of course jumping up the giant ice statues, which would be awesome as they could be made slippery, giving them different mechanics from most other JPs.

For The Grove, “up the tree” is the obvious one, followed by “down the roots”, maybe with underwater parts…

While cool, i don’t think it’ll serve the purpose of making the cities busier, because it would kinda be a do once and forget type of thing. Unless they provided something unique to the city jps over others. WvW has badges and seige; Not sure what the cities could offer that would allow them to be more unique. Than again, maybe other people find them fun enough to do them repeatedly.

I don’t know, I’ve been doing jumping puzzles over and over; first for achievements, then for continue coins, then for dailies/monthlies… if you check in LA, Troll’s End and Urmaug’s Secret are never NOT busy with people. Don’t know about Sharkmaw as I haven’t checked there in a while.

If the puzzles (or their beginnings) were central enough, I don’t see why people wouldn’t do them.

TAPzilla, I know the bit you mean in Rata Sum. I made it down to the bottom of the core of Rata Sum before, you can jump down from ledge to ledge most of the way. So that definitely feels like its ready made.

A mountain climb could be brought in to a Hoelbrak jumping puzzle. That might be a good one for a relatively simple puzzle.

The Grove probably does need to be vertical, but I’m not sure exactly where it could be with the current layout. Currently there’s the jump where you can wear goggles and dive right down, which might work as a mechanic in the jumping puzzle there. I’m just not sure where the puzzle could be integrated into the place. There’s the one high point at the very bottom where you climb up mushrooms to reach it, perhaps a simple one could use that idea and have mushrooms up a large tree. Underwater/underground would definitely be a good way of integrating it in to the city, good idea.

I think people would do them, although probably not huge numbers. The puzzles would always probably have a couple of people doing it at once, although ti would probably only be slightly noticeable in increased numbers around in the cities generally, but I think even that would be worth while.

You could build the grove puzzle around and below the current model. There may need to be some alteration to incorperate the entrance and exit . But there should be enough room to put it behind the walls as it were

Good ideas for the Grove. I was just wondering about the Grove in particular because all the other cities have ready made areas already existing within their cities, like the Great Collapse, that would just have jumping puzzle ledges added to them to make them into a puzzle. The Grove is the only one I can’t think of with a ready made area for a puzzle other than a mushroom puzzle up one of the central roots. I think incorporating the puzzle into the existing city infrastructure is far for preferable than making a new area in the city.

The Grove already has so many places where you could add mushroom platforms and such. And its not a very large outpost either. I think there may be room to expand the outpost and add secret areas. Something like the sharktooth cave in Lion’s Arch would be great for the Grove. And perhaps if such a large puzzle was to be added, some more lore regarding the Sylvari could be made part of the puzzle.

I don’t know… this rainbow road would pretty much defeat the purpose of a jumping puzzle. The Super Adventure Box does not goal to be a huge jumping puzzle. It’s supposed to be an adventure. That’s why they added the rainbow road and clouds.

However jumping puzzles ask the user to solve difficult puzzles and/or jump.
If you want I could show you the way through them sometime.

There is also an in between option, as seen with some other jumping puzzles in the game:

Add unlockable shortcuts, that allow a player to continue a jumping puzzle halfway. That way they don’t have to start all over again every time they fail. One of the jumping puzzles in Caladon Forest for example, has checkpoints that the player can teleport to. Especially for very long jumping puzzles, this is a most welcome addition that makes the puzzle less frustrating for players that are bad at these things.

Be nice to see “race-jumping puzzles” jump through and beat the clock by jumping over blockades before a big Indianan Jones boulder squashes you! or quickly jump to your survival for fresh air or be consumed in some green stinky gas from that big fractal robots backside.

Yeah what the sun-south cove jumping puzzle was missing was either a more difficult (e.g. with monsters or a different difficult jumping concept) as alternative way (there basically are no intended short cuts in jumping puzzles) or more check points.

I like the jumping puzzles that rush you but I think it should always be kept by a few and not every. I like how there are many jumping puzzles with different concepts and I would love to see more with new concepts.

Sounds more like an explorator/event/quest to me. Might be just my opinion. I really enjoyed the puzzle of the bloodcoast. (I still have no idea how it works…)

its was annoying, but its easy after you do it. you goto kill some turrets and then use control panel and my greatest mistake i kept exiting the convo window, but you wait and then it gives response i can’t remember the correct sayings you could youtube it. then you use the panels over to the right when the portal open up and adjust the coords to a specific set of numbers and go through portal. or just wait till someone else solves it and relays the coords back to computer.

Yeah I really want to explore the unending ocean black depths.. like in everblue. but that wont happen. but be nice to see some fast paced jumping puzzle with short-cuts for me if i get frustrated.

I’m glad everybody is still loving the ideas of city jumping puzzles so much. I just wanted to share an anecdote about the idea: a RL friend of mine was relatively new to guild wars and was a late comer to jumping puzzles. Having done a few he asked me where they were in the cities, to which I could only reply that for whatever reason there isn’t any but everybody wants some!

I would love to see some nostalgic jumping puzzles. Hinting towards gw1’s most popular dungeons, maybe even the weapon skins that went with those famous dungeons.
Shards of orr, slavers exile, bogroot growths, stuff like that.
It kinda makes no sense that LA has 3 puzzles and the major cities have none.

I remember reading or hearing in one of the dev interviews that there were jumping puzzles that had been removed from the game because they weren’t polished in time for launch. Some of them have already been added back in, but I am hoping we’ll see some fun ones in the cities eventually, especially the DR gardens.

I remember reading or hearing in one of the dev interviews that there were jumping puzzles that had been removed from the game because they weren’t polished in time for launch. Some of them have already been added back in, but I am hoping we’ll see some fun ones in the cities eventually, especially the DR gardens.

Oh, it would be amazing if I could find a source for this. I love jumping puzzles the most, and the prospect of new ones, be it in cities, instances or the open world, makes me all excited. (Although I think the cities need them the most.)

I really like this idea—the cities do feel very empty. I don’t think this would add a TON of people, but considering that jumping puzzles are included in dailies and monthlies, it would be convenient and make the cities more visited. I think people mostly do the Lion’s Arch puzzles because it’s so easy to warp over to Urmaug’s Secret and climb up the cliff for a minute to get the achievement. They’re right there, so people do them. If there were puzzles in every city, people would surely go for those for monthlies; they would be in the most convenient locations (just an asura gate away from LA!) rather than a trek across a map (or a fee for a nearby waypoint). Even for dailies, people who prefer the puzzle in, say, Rata Sum over the ones in LA could go through the asura gate to there and do it relatively quickly.

I liked a lot of the ideas here, especially going up the garden in Divinity’s Reach. I like the Great Collapse idea, but personally I’m hoping they save that for a content update involving Primordus/Destroyers/the depths. I couldn’t think of many puzzle ideas myself, but when trying to come up with one for the Grove, I thought of an idea for a feature of one. In Caledon Forest there are some neutral mosshearts that will attack when attacked, but there are certain places where there are “green-named” mosshearts that you can’t even attack yourself. I imagined these in the Grove somewhere, and the jumping puzzle involving you exploring trees and eventually having to cross one of the terraces to reach the next branch. There would be mosshearts walking lazily around in a circle, and players would have to jump on their backs and ride them for a short distance before jumping off onto the next platform! That just sounded like a neat feature of a puzzle that I don’t think has been done similarly before (I’ve done about 75% of the puzzles so far). If people were just running through the Grove and saw someone jump onto the back of a mossheart, I think they’d be pretty excited to try it themselves. If I come up with any more ideas I will surely report back here.

I thought today would be a perfect day to inject some life back in to this idea. We still have no city jumping puzzles other than in LA, but today has marked the end of the Great Collapse in Divinity’s Reach which was one of our ideas for a jumping puzzle.

Amongst all the business in DR, it got me thinking about the idea again and I really hope we eventually get city jumping puzzles. There’s still plenty of opportunities for jumping puzzles in DR, I’m really glad to see the garden idea is still getting lots of positive attention. I think the new Crown Plaza offers great potential for a jumping puzzle in itself.

Having nearly completed all of the jumping puzzles in game at least once (I know I’m fairly late to the party on that, but some have vexed me for a long time :P) I really am itching to go and do more. I want us all to have more jumping puzzles and I want us all to be able to see the cultural cities from a new, beautiful, perspective. I really want this to happen, so please post your support if you agree and lets keep this idea going.
