With bets being placed by gawkers, including the Charr who bets on the dark horse (you) and makes a mint when you divinely win (with a little hand-greasing to some mercenary archers up on the wall above the pit)?

well, lets see,
- new achievements, new titles perhaps?
- new “Colosseum Rank & Abilities” similar to the somewhat new “WvW Rank & Abilities” kittenol
- silvers?
- bet winnings?
- more silvers?
- new token? kittenolol
- new currency? we have bronze (copper), silver, gold, laurels, karma etc.

hmmmm if we look at it in more detail:
- co op fight against deadly monsters with people cheering / booing
if people cheer (Colosseum spectator skill), increases chance for bags of silver from killed monster.
if people boo (Colosseum spectator skill), increases chance for <insert something bad here>
win more silvers for surviving more battles in a row without dying?
got solo mode with npc (for those forever alone ppl), random party mode (hey, we just met, lets kill some monsters together!), arranged party mode etc.
some small entrance fee to act as gold sink.

- place bets (or manipulate them for more profit?)
place bets on any on going activity in the Colosseum? house (anet) takes a cut of course, to act as gold sink etc.

- competitive co op battles (monster pong maybe? kill a monster to send a new monster into opposing team’s lane)
could be a “challengers accepted version” of the “co op fight against deadly monsters with people cheering / booing” mentioned earlier.
it starts off as a normal game until another team decides to challenge you.
could have random people cheering / booing on both teams for various <insert nice things here> and <insert bad things here> for the 2 teams.
challenging team needs to pay some small challenge fee perhaps?

- 1 vs 1 duels ! (or team battles, yawn)
bets!
small entrance fee.

- last man standing free for all (with time limit?)
bets! see who survives in the end.

Yes. Vet and Champ fights are fun and I’d love Dailies and reward systems to just play with them outside of dungeons and events. There could be some cool fights.

- co op battle against monster
- co op battle against monster – challenge accepted version

hmmm a whole new Colosseum dailies and Colosseum monthly? WvW then.
omg completionists gonna rage! casuals rejoice! new alternative to earn some laurels. well probably not, since we will be using PvE gear so the Colosseum will probably be an extension of PvE and WvW.

I want one massive 3 way server fight in one single small arena of inescapable death no walls.. no hills just sand of the arena… zergs pawnage. now it would be laggy and an epileptic’s nightmare but boy would it be funny as and you would score so much from spam

O_O errrr well, if player generated content is allowed in the Colosseum then perhaps yes that may be possible.

i.e.
arena floor texture type: sand
arena size: very small / small / medium
teams: 3 (could let players choose their own team i.e. red blue green or make it default to their own home servers etc)
type: team death match
respawn timer: author defined
respawn location: author defined
etc

and, if the system permits, may allow the public to contribute towards the custom arena’s rental so the custom arena is kept alive by the players who enjoyed it as well.

Yes I’d always imagine a Colosseum for 1v1 duels and spectators. When a combatant goes down in the 1v1 the crowd would vote thumbs down or thumbs up (finish him! or let him live another day!) and the winner could choose what he want but gets more points if he follows the crowd.

well, could be set (if it can be done) after a time limit, spectators could unlock some extra skills that can sort of interfere with the match, such as:
- throwing banana peel (knock down + crippled?)
- throwing ink bags (blindness?)
- etc

That sounds really awesome great idea- I really like the idea of spectator skills- in some personal stories you have something like it if you team up with another person.

A proper one where achievements and maybe even a title or two could be earned would be a good reward system. If you have actual gold or item rewards, you open it up to bribery and all sorts of nasty things (just like the real world!) but just a place for a little glory and fun would be nice. If Anet is so dead set against dueling anywhere, placing an arena in every major city would be a nice way to officiate and regulate dueling. Black Citadel already has one if I remember.

Because in-game betting on pvp matches would certainly not devolve into match-fixing and exploits within the first 5 minutes.

Maybe if “all” classes had some way to sustain themselves and not some of them. Also if overall damage was lowered by 50%. Condition damage and duration lowered by 50% as well.

had a brief read. this “Olympiad from Lineage 2” seems like a very major 1 vs 1 event in that game. would be nice if gw2 has one but i think official ones by anet seems unlikely.

now if anet allows player generated contents then perhaps players can host their own 1 vs 1 events …

hmmm yeah gw2 needs more types of PvP for PvE characters. at the moment, PvE characters can only PvP in WvW. very limited.

hundred blades while moving. perhaps this will be possible one day.
expect the damage to be drastically reduced though. or perhaps there will be 2 variants.

activate hundred blade once, standard skill, roots you in place. cannot move.
activate hundred blade again quickly, unroots you and you are able to move, but the damage is drastically reduced.

and if player made arenas are possible, then it is possible to have re-spawn-able items spawn periodically in the arena. items such as
- bandages
- antidote
- stimulant
- weapons
- etc

hmmm indeed. well, the original guild wars had quite a lot of new game modes added over the years too.

guild wars: factions (2nd year) – alliance battles
guild wars: nightfall (3rd year) – heroes, mini games, etc

i was hoping the same for guild wars 2 as well.
more awesome content down these years.

the way i look at it now, PvP options for PvE / WvW people seems limited as they can only do group pvp inside WvW.

As said (only once), there already is a Collosseum-ish arena called The Bane. It’s in the Black Citadel. Now we just need to get some activities up in there (:

Yes, the bane would be perfect for many of these scenarios! There’s a possibility that ANet has already planned half of these things (if or when we see them implemented is another matter).

what if its a dungeon, but takes on aspects like those awesome bosses in living story. like each fight is a meaning ful challenge as you battle your way through vietrans, champions and bosses etc.. while knocking out achievements, and earning special currency to buy skins and other fancy items. though there shouldn’t be heaps of people as it would be too much like WvW or PvP tournament. you could match some battles with other player teams connecting and some with npc monsters, have a mixture. that could be seen as random challenge every-time you play.

I wouldnt want this to be just a huge zerg fight… We have WvW for that. It would be more fun if it was a ‘last man standing’ kind of fight. This would require some amount of cooperation to narrow down the finalists, so I’d suggest something like this:

(Randomly?) assign people in to X man teams. Once there are only Y people left, it turns into a free-for-all.

Naval battles!

The real colosseum during Roman times, would occasionally fill the arena with water, and have warriors reenact historical naval battles. That would be perfect for GW2. Just have boats rise from a hatch in the floor, flood the place with water. Add a few mounted canons, and allow players to board other ships. Add a few angry sharks in the water for good measure. Every battle could have a theme fitting with a Tyrian historical battle.

Additionally, the last two people standing would be able to earn extra rewards. And maybe spectators would be able to vote if they want the player to live (thumb down), or if they want him to die (thumb up). (Yes, they always get this wrong in Hollywood movies, it should be in reverse)

You could even do guild versus guild in there :-)

I think it should be an extension of PvP maybe. Not many players do PvP, and opt to instead do WvW

I don’t know about a whole new version of wvw, because that’s pretty much what you’re asking for, but I sure as hell would love to see the charr fighting pit turned into a minigame in the Black Citadel, and it could very easily be made to accommodate many of the things you just listed. I would absolutely love that! So combine your idea with mine= win hehe

I would like to add the minor suggestion of a prize for The Last Man Standing tournaments, a special tournaments say once a month.

The ability to hide chest armor, both in pve and pvp.

It’s already in the game, have you not been to Black Citadel? They have an arena already and it has the traditional animal cages, multiple tunnels for several players/monsters, and even drop cages for the really nasty surprises.

But like most of the activities, it is not implemented.

My thoughts on 1v1 duels. GW2 isn’t a game based on 1v1 skill as it currently stands. It is a very Rock, Paper, Scissors kind of game. Current;y that balance is far from perfect seeing as there are several specs that allow you to have almost no real weaknesses and the only spec that can defeat it 1v1 is a similarly OP build. Certain classes like mesmer have a massive advantage in single combat. Bunkers also have an edge because typically DPS builds can’t do enough damage due to protection or insane regen (looking at you rangers). 1v1 doesn’t prove much of anything, I’ll sometimes join a 1v1 server but it’s mostly just for a quick practice session but I always know that they prove next to nothing.

I’d also much rather see GvG put into the game before anything like this. I’d also want to see some of the PvP arenas that GW1 Factions introduced, they were interesting non-symmetrical game types.

Something like the arenas in The Elder Scrolls?
Not only would I love to participate in them, I’d even enjoy watching it. Learn a thing or two about other classes and players. An option to sit in the Colosseum stands would be really cool.

This sounds great. Maybe not the PvE side to it but a free for all arena with massive perks to the last man standing (or divided between however many are standing). Some changes would have to be made such as Permastealth thieves and other high mobility classes such as Warrior, Ele and Mesmer but still very good. Again +1 for duels and definitely BETTING. There’s a reason it’s so big in the real world, people love the adrenaline rush.
