I can’t find the previous post with this suggestion. But here are some ability ideas:

1. Can’t equip two shields, only main or off.
2. Shield launch – uppercut your enemies knocking them back
Shield throw – Throw your shield like a frisbee, slicing enemies in your path and bleeding them
3. Shield autoattack: Bash, > Mash, > Stagger (cripples for 2 sec)

Elementalist kind of has this with the conjured earth shield ability.

Of course extending it to maybe guardians and warriors isn’t that bad of an idea.

It’ll be a great skill for an engineer, as they tend to use weapons in original ways.

As for the skills, I remember suggesting some skills for engineerwith dual shields and with hammer.

I’ll try to find it…

Here it is:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/suggestions/Engineer-Love-More-weapons/first#post396232

The skills were inspired by throwing shields in pop culture, and disc games like those in Tron.

  1. Disc
Throw the shield like a disk, piercing though enemies on its path an returning to you. Thrown shields bounce off walls.
    Combo finisher: Projectile (20% chance)
    600 range. 3/4s activation.
  2. Cluster.
Trow the shield to a target. It it hits, it splits into 5 shields, each one hitting a nearby enemy.
Combo finisher: projectile. (The original thrown shield and each split shield)
Combo finisher: blast. (When it splits)
    600 area.
    1000 range. 3/4s activation. 6s recharge.
  3. Variable skill:
    • Clash
Appears only when having two shields.
Use both shields like clash cymbals, Dealing, Stun, Daze, Confusion and minor damage.
      Stun: 0.5s.
      Daze: 2s
      Confusion: 8 stacks, 8s.
      Combo finisher: Blast.
      Range 150. 1/4 activation. 45s recharge.
    • Absorb
Appears only when not having an offhand shield.
Tries to block for 3 seconds. If it blocks a projectile, it becomes a copy of the skill that created that projectile for 15 seconds.
If it blocks a projectile that can’t be copied (e.g. Monster skills, skills too powerful to be copied by this), it defaults to a copy of Throw Shield.
If it blocks any other type of attack, it just recharges.
      1/4 activation. 25s recharge.

perhaps i’m just being a “nay say”-er (looks around suspiciously) but i sadly don’t like this idea, there was never a time in history where shields were used as anything but defense or a weapon of opportunity (eg. just lost sword, no options, screw it throw shield, buy time to grab something else) further it would require way more balancing which anet is already having issues with (bunker problem anyone?) and even further seeing someone dual-wielding shields is just (in the words of Tim Minchin) @#$%ing silly

RaGe you have never studied history in how weapons were used have you?

The shield was only viewed as defensive if it was a wall shield (square shields and tower shields). The shield has always been an OFFENSIVE weapon. It saddened me horribly to see the guardian shield attack is so…crappy. Shields are weapons of strength and control. Shield slamming, pushing, using the bottom edge to pin a weapon to the ground, use the front edge to hit a neck or shoulder…shields can be used in an incredible array of offensive methods. A person that is a master of using a shield will cause far more damage and control the flow of any combat they are in by controlling the avenue of attack and using a metal shield to regularly pummel the enemy into numbness. Ever use a sword or mace and hit a metal shield? Heck even a wooden one causes your fingers to tingle from the reverb, several attacks in a row can cause your hand to go numb, making you slower to react and make your weapon strikes less precise. Not only that but when you attack using a shield…your shield is still blocking attacks and creating a wall. Even a chop at a neck/arm/leg/chest just creates a different angled wall, shift your body acordingly and your sword is still there to intercept the clumsy attack while your shield slams into them.

FYI, a frontal edge shield slam hits with enough psi to decapitate someone or completely crush your chest if done using a metal disk shield or metal kite shield. This is assumign the individual is atleast wearing chain link and banded armor (aka one step removed from platemail). The suddeness and the inability to block the attack with anything less than a shield of your own (which better already be in the right place or your dead anyway) sorta makes the shield one of the more devestating weapon when compared against mace/axe/sword.

Those trained in the offensive use of a shield will always hold all the cards.

^ i’d love you to show me a case in actual history of someone which used a shield as a weapon of choice. dual shields, even better.

You know what a buckler is?
Alot of gauntlets have bucklers incorporated.

If you can imagine boxing with armor, then you can imagine using 2 shields.

dual shields is kind of silly, but main hand shield makes sense I mean a shield can be used for offense, Troy anyone ?

Essentially, a properly used shield is a fist weapon as well

hence weapon of opportunity, I’m aware of that, but what i was suggesting is that shields are not used ONLY as weapons or for that matter as a main hand weapon (as was being suggested) I’m more than aware of the history and uses of shields as weapons but more or less were primarily as defense mechanics (very rarely on a battlefield would a sword strike sword, the weapon on actual battlefields would strike shields almost exclusively) a shield as a primary weapon is a bad idea… like horns on your helmet, sacrificing a weapon for the purpose of having a shield to use as your sole weapon or to dual-wield shields or even use a shield with a silly focus or alternatively use a shield main-hand and sword offhand is silly, like I said and actively stand by, it’s a silly decision that would make too great a change to the game and provide no benefit or realism. Also, I know my history.

Spartans.

Actually in individual combat the hoplites (spartan infantry) would often simply drop their shields as they were very unwieldy in individual combat, the shield was designed to be used in a phalanx where everyone covered the person next to them in individual combat it was almost better dropped and picked back up later(returning home without your shield in ancient Greece was a sign of cowardice) that being said a great deal of the Spartans were strong enough to wield them effectively (as both weapon and defense, but only as off-hands)
