Recurring Monthly Subscription
You can just get Gems for those 14.99, and call it whatever you want.
ANet chose to publish the game without subscription for a reason,
like they did GW1. There exist at least one article about it, which
explains the reason for their choice, I agree in their reason.
Sorry I do not have a link.

I realize that, but its more for the store then the game itself and its only optional, aren’t options good for a game. And why would it bother anyone.

I bought the game because it didn’t have a subscription. An automated message to say ‘thank you’ isn’t going to make some people feel that special.
If anything, we should be showing our support for the model they chose. GW2: The game that finally killed the subscription model for high budget mmo games.
Leaves a legacy in the mmo world.
If you want to pay $15 a month, no one is stopping you.
yeah just buy gems… if you don’t like gems, convert it to gold.. you got gold and supported A.Net…
Waylon- lvl 80 Guardian
Trism – lvl 80 Engineer
Kanuvani, if it’s an option, you’d still feel guilty.
If it’s mandatory, I am against.
My opinion is that very few MMos are worth paying $15 a month.
Get it taken down -
Do whatever it takes if you care about this game -
Just buy a certain amount of gems every month if you want to give them money on a regular basis.
If they call it differently than “subscription” than its ok. Let’s say they call it" Gem’s Delivery Post" or “Recurring Gems” than it will satisfy your request and won’t confuse people. It can be posted on “Services tab”
They won’t want to damage the reputation/goodwill of “no monthly subscription” for sure… that is one of the largest drawing factor and you’ll be hurting them instead of helping.
Money is money, and I don’t see why you can’t buy gems instead lol.
I’m pretty sure the OP is suggesting an OPTIONAL fee. You can still play without paying, but you can cough up 15 bucks for gems hears Record Scratch sound effect Wait a minute. What? Why not just buy 15$ worth of gems? Something else would have to be added example, customizable fashion, a dungeon or 2 that can only be accessed if the party leader is a subber, a pet that follows you around and picks up loot automatically, one extra bar of endurance, and maybe a side quest line that’s different from the main quest (doesn’t offer much in the way of exp but decent karma maybe?) i’m sure there are other things that can be added to give subbers, grants what ever it is must not give them a ground shattering edge.

NO NO NO NO NO, every single thing you mention maybe except the fashion thing would be “pay to win”
If you want to support the game every month just buy gems, if you do’nt looking for extra benefits or anyting like that, i don’t see the freaking difference
Yeh maybe a recurring subscription feature to get gems every month instead for people who want to keep on receiving them monthly. You will be also supporting the game too.
Personally, I see no reason why Anet couldn’t setup an optional (emphasis on that word) “monthly pledge” system whereby those who use it receive a gift (e.g. gems).
After all, it would be optional.

I don’t think you understand the meaning of the term “pay to win”. Having a pet that “auto-loots” isn’t pay to win. How can auto-looting give a player an advantage over another to the point whereby they “win”? It doesn’t. “Pledge” Players having access to extra dungeon isn’t pay to win. It’s akin to an “adventure pack” found in other games.
Besides, the player you quoted is just offering suggestions.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I’ve seen so many good free games killed by premium account systems that its just not worth discussing.

And yet, many MMO’s that went F2P kept their premium subscription systems in place and seem to help with bolstering the income for the game.
Which MMO’s have you seen that have been “killed” by premium account systems?

Thats pretty different from the original suggestion. That’s “premium package”, the original suggestion was “recurring, optional pledge”. There is a huge difference, and these two shouldn’t be mixed. I got nothing against a “recurring, optional pledge”. Could even deliver the correct amount of gems. Starting on a “premium package” idea would be pretty much against ANet ideals. (Or so I like to believe.)
People who can’t tend to call the opponent troll, scream something utterly incomprehensible
and finally result to personal insults.
Which MMO’s have you seen that have been “killed” by premium account systems?
Some localized games in my country: RF online, Allods online, even PW, L2 and Ragnarok online just to name a few, even Aion EU that gone F2P put severe restrictions for non-premium accounts, pretty much every browser game. At some point of those games it was impossible to stay competitive without premium account.

i feel guilty, too.

I fail to understand how any of those suggestions can become a pay to win thing (with the exception of maybe the one extra endurance bar). Can you explain exactly how they can break the game? The pay to win model something that gives a dominating edge to a player who has the money to throw around. Example: uber gear, boosted stats, near instant leveling of crafting skills, or items that give super potions of some kind that make it harder for you to die. I suggested those things because i’m sure they can’t give a player an edge, and they won’t get anything else beyond that (there wouldn’t be anything added beyond maybe a new dungeon every 3 expansions or so).

I can understand what the OP is saying. it’s just that i don’t understand doing that when you can simply buy gems. was just throwing something on the table that would make the 15 bucks actually worth something. Or maybe they should just slap a “donate” button somewhere in the game.xD
another poster used PW as an example of pay to win. Do you mean PWI? If so that isn’t a valid example, seeings as that game basically had a cashshop that is exactly like the one in GW2 and many other mmorpgs. What killed that game was them selling those kitten packs that gave tokens that could then be used at ncps to get materials to get the strongest gear in the game or quests where you kill a boss and you get massive exp, which resulted in a huge influx of new players that hit the level cap with top gear and knew NOTHING about how to play the game. THAT my friend is pay to win.
If you want to support, buy gems. That’s what its there for. If you feel “guilty” buying gems for some reason… then don’t? Its no skin off their backs. Bahamadude has it right, just put a donation box on the website or in game. If you don’t want anything from the gem store and feel “guilty” or feel like youre wasting money on gems just to show your support then why would you want gems as a reward for paying monthly? If they added a monthly then I would hope they would add something more than just gems. Maybe a VIP section to the gem store. With more stuff no one wants.
Um… have you even looked the options you can do with gems? How about buy $14.99 worth of gems, sell them for gold, theres your use. If you don’t feel right buying in game items, don’t think Anet is gana drag the entire community down with a monthly fee. Horrible Idea, and no I’m not trolling. This game attracted a ton of people because it was subscription free, Anet wouldn’t ruin that.
break. I feel like they should be back by now..”

How would an option to regularly buy gems change anything? It wouldn’t.
The game would still be subscription free.
Best way for me to support them…come out with content patches every month and I’ll certainly buy them. If they came out with ‘modules’ every month, that would best serve the community.
I personally hate $$$ for items/personal looks/gems etc…seems cheesy to me.
ima say i dislike this idea, if you want to support the game then buy gems and transfer it over to gold use the gold on your guild or something, seems to be silly to have a micro payment and a sub in one game just my 0.02
If you want to support the game, then that’s awesome. But they shouldn’t make that change – they’d get a lot of bad publicity for it, and it isn’t worth it. If you want to pay every month, then you can already do so.
Break up his current fight.
I despise premium account type games. I will quit the second they do this. The system they have now is fine. You can buy gems if you wish to support them and convert that to gold.
Come on now, one of the coolest features of GW1 and 2 is that it’s f2p. Wich is one of the reasons why they have such a large playerbase.People get a chance to make suggestions, what they do? Suggest subscription fee lol. Really the most unlikely suggestion i thought i ever see here. Maybe it’s a grab at getting better items for yourself?Wrong game, cause its one of GW2’s goals to keep players equal in game, its more about skill then geargrind, thanx Anet.

You are not reading what is being suggested by the OP. although just about everyone agrees it makes no sense.
^
Ow i think i did
OP said “Yes i said it, adding an option for recurring monthly subscription”
sounds like suscription fee to me.
“But not one that adds anything different to that game”
No way that it’s not gona change the game, a subscription fee is a subscription fee, even it’s out of free will, i stand by what i said it’s probably a grab at getting better items then other players.
^
no you DIDN’T understand what he meant. he was saying an OPTIONAL fee for those who want to support the game but felt guilty about buying gems. it was an odd idea where if you want, you can cough up 15 bucks and STILL get gems anyway. read the entire thread to get the gist of what the OP was trying to suggest. But i admit it’s easy to be fooled the way he put it.
hmm… do you have OCD? Why don’t you just mail them your money? I’m sure they wouldn’t say no… or would that not rectify the situation because Anet doesn’t officially call you mailing them money every month a “subscription”?
Yeah I feel super guilty as well. Honestly whenever I see people kittening on the forums about how the game is kitten and anet sucks I just want to find them and punch them in the face. If any of them have lvl 80 characters there’s a pretty good chance they have 150+ hours of gameplay from a 60$ game not too mention free content updates?
I think I’m going to start buying gems every once and a while just to support anet if I continue playing for a while.
You guys are missing the problem with the OP’s suggestion.
If he’d feel guilty for buying gems to support ANet, he’d feel guilty for paying any “optional” monthly subscription.
