Repair cost is essentially the “death penalty” that was in GW1. Though I feel it should be removed for PvP deaths, it does prevent too much zerging as people eventually run out of money or feel they’re losing too much so they zone out, allowing other players who were waiting on ques to enter an overpopulated borderland.

The thing is, death is avoidable. WvW costs for repair should be lowered I agree but in PVE? Its a necessary gold sink since it doesn’t even cost too much as long as you arnt jumping off cliffs onto solid ground or linking the dungeon. Id much rather pay for repairs than go through death penalty again from GW1..

Don’t die…
The game needs a death penalty, all games do actually, otherwise, it’s just a zerg-zerg-zerg till you get whatever it was you wanted to do.
If you are dying too much, then you need to optimize your gear, change skills/traits, until you find the sweetspot you can play well at. Not just die-die-die with underleveled items, no traits, and still expect to win the game.
I do agree with NinjaEd though. WvW is a different matter, and those repair costs should be lowered, or removed outright. Nothing more demoralizing, than joining a map you are undermanned, and knowing you will have to pay a lot just to try to take a few positions from the all-mighty zerg…

Actually, dying from fall damage will not damage your gear…
However, i much prefer dropping coin in order to continue instead of having to leave and completely restart because you died to much and are no longer able to fight anything…

Doesn’t get on my nerves, just die less. Casual does not mean unskilled.
As ninjaEd rightly points out for pve it’s fine. WvW it’s out of your hands though. In pve I always go to res anyone that I see dead, but often they release just as I’m about to res them. If money is so important to you, play around other people, or ask in map chat, someone will often come to help you.

Waypoint cost could go a bit down when at a higher level. Even then, however, the cost can be clearly covered and then some by looting some monsters.
Other than that, paying a few silver to repair my armor is nothing too serious.
Compared the the percentage death penalty in Guild Wars, having a little of your gear busted makes sense.

death in pve is avoidable so repair costs is needed to punish people that are lazy but pvp deaths are not avoidable.gotta remove repair costs for it

There needs to be a penalty for dying, otherwise death is just a slight annoyance.

Just going to point something out: Waypoint Costs and Repair Costs are possibly one of the few things that make players give a kitten about reviving you.
Because if you didn’t have to pay anything for dying, everyone would just tell you to stop being lazy and just use the free waypoint.
I see alot of requests from players that would make this game more solo-friendly.
Why would you want to play solo in an MMORPG?
I’m not sure the players that make the requests realize it, though.
Must be subconscious.

There is no need to change the death penalty just because your not using the numerous methods to gain money. I understand that this game is tailored for casual gamers, but its a bit to easy having no penalty/barely any at all. Really just do some quests in PvE and you will have more than enough money to cover repair costs for hours in WvW.

It’s not the dollar sign on these features, it’s simply the pricetag, the unreasonable cost for repairs and travelling. I think these fees SHOULD exist, but definitely not at such a high rate. It IS something that goes into MMOs – these little so-called taxes.

If you are really worried about all that nickle and dime-ing, you can get just about any where in the world fairly cheap.
1. need to go to lions arch? go thru heart of the mists = free
2. going to a city? go to lions arch ( see number 1 ) go to the city = free
altough u could probably make that 3s it woulda cost you in less time then the loading screens .. just saying

perhaps give us optional methods to repair armor.
maybe via armor smithing skills or something.
and require raw materials etc.

I will support this only in PvP environment.

Must be subconscious.
The social aspect of an MMO is not limited to teaming, and there’s a great deal of the game that has nothing to do with socializing at all.
Also, being able to solo means more time will be spent in the game, because it means playing will always be an option.
Solo play is a big part of any successful MMO.
Death Penalty:
Currently, the death penalty in this game can be a double or even triple threat (1. waypoint cost, 2. repair cost and, if you’re really unlucky, 3. loss of loot because you had to leave the scene).
I think that’s a bit much.
Waypoint cost causes other issues as well, so that’s probably where adjustments should be made.
As for PvE death being avoidable… no, sometimes it’s not. If an event spawns right on top of your head, there’s not a lot you can do about it. This has happened to me 4 or 5 times already, so I suspect it’s not uncommon. Or maybe I just have horrible timing. Regardless, having to fork over coin twice after something like that does not make for the happy, no matter how rare your deaths may be.

The death penalty is fine as it is… Learn how to survive and your costs will be less.
And removing the repair costs from WvW would be a bad thing as well, people would zerg more, they would care less about surviving a fight, therefor run into every fight like stupid…

Repair and waypoint costs are essential for reasons people have already outlined. However having a hearthstone that allows you to go to your “home” in your home instance looks like a good idea, since you can already zone back to LA anyway for free through PvP.

well right not people are running from every fight as well.they are scared to try out new tactics or lead the pack since they know they will die and have to pay to repair the armor

The cost is negligible. You get around 70s/h just playing the game normally, if you’re dying enough that it hurts this margin you need to seriously rethink your tactics.

It really don’t cost a whole lot, even at 80, to repair or waypoint. There needs to be some costs attributable to the player, some way of removing coin from the economy, and this is how it is done here. Full death is avoidable in most situations. It is up to each player to learn their profession’s skills and abilities, using them to their best advantage to prevent death as much as possible in the first place.

When a player dies two things happen:
While the damage to the armor makes sense, the fact that players are forced to pay in order to revive themselves is absolutely ridiculous.
This portion of the death penalty needs to be removed completely and replaced with something more appropriate that doesn’t require coin in order to accomplish a simple function that should be free.

It is not in Spvp, why not take it out of WvW?? In the open PvE environment, it is fine. The traveling costs are ridiculous as there are zero mounts in this game or added abilities via certain classes that could cast a portal. You want to build on community and enforce the structure based on a great MMO experience? Add Portal abilities to a couple of classes, trust me it will work. This was huge in EQ1 and worked out really well. Lets not talk about EQ2…..

I’m considering taking a white set of armor into WvWvW or going naked because I just can’t afford to die wp and repair

I support free or cheaper repair in wvw if your world is not doing so well. you can end up just running to commander get killed run back and over 1 silver every time this quickly get expensive.

Why should it be free?
and what should replace it?
here’s some cool one:
When you die you can return to waypoint for free.
Each time you die you get a death penalty that makes you take 20% more damage. Cap at 200%. You can only remove stack of 10% by making 50,000 exp. Logging out have no effect. The effect is nullified if you go to sPvP, but not removed. Meaning that it comes back when you go out.
I think this would make dyeing interesting. Not only you break a piece of armor, but you also take 20% more damage. Which will probably make you die quickly again if you’re not cautious.
When you’re dead you can chose to pay waypoint with karma or money. Paying with karma give you an unremovable random condition for 3 minutes. (you cannot teleport, change skills or equipment while under the effect of condition since you’re seen as in combat)
When you die, you can chose to revive for money or karma at nearest waypoint. If you chose karma, you have little invulnerable bunnies attacking you for 5 minutes. (same as above, you’re in combat for the whole time so you walk slow and cannot change skills/equipment or teleport, but you get to see bunnies)

There must be a risk/reward balance. If anything, make the penalty harder.
I see way too many glass builds, where ppl get oneshoted just because toughness/vitality matters too little.
In the harder dungeons this is very evident.

Change waypoint costs so they’re just like cities, in each zone. That is, if you’re in a zone, it’s free to go to any other waypoint in that zone.
If you need to cross zones, you can walk (slower, but free) or pay (faster, but costly). This would allow players to help with zone events (I’m not paying ~4s to join an event in the same zone, sorry) but still have the money sink for real convenience.
