So whenever you want to change/modify your armor, you can either keep the armor by replacing (and losing) the runes or use a Black Lion salvage kit to keep the runes and destroy your armor.

It seems like we get punished for wanting to evolve and be dynamic in our playstyles in GW2. I mean we have to pay (even though it is a small amount) just to respec traits and we pay high prices for our runes and armor and get really screwed if we make a mistake or decide something else is better later.

There are already lots of gold sinks, including the trait respec cost I mentioned earlier, so I propose we update salvaging a little to make it more user-friendly.

I make this proposition considering a few things from my personal experience:
-salvaging high level items is usually only worth it for decent profit when you salvage low quality (white) items with cheap kits and high quality (yellow) items with rare or Black Lion kits
-due to the inherent scarcity of rare items I have over half a dozen Black Lion salvage kits sitting on my account collecting dust
-having an abundance of unused BL kits makes rare salvage kits (from merchants) obsolete

So finally, my suggestion would be to make Black Lion salvage kits into the equivalents of perfect salvage kits from GW1. This would mean that they would be able to successfully remove runes from armor without destroying them, give an additional purpose for BL kits, and increase the viability of the merchants’ rare salvage kits.

tl;dr: bring back perfect salvage kits plz

I agree with this, but it should not be exclusive to Black Lion Salvage Kit.

Salvage Kit functionality should be reversed across the board – to work exactly like in GW1:

  • Crude Salvage Kits only extract raw materials (like the Salvage Kit in GW1)
  • Basic Salvage Kits and above let you pick what to extract – raw materials or Upgrade – with 100% success (like Expert, Superior and Perfect in GW1)
  • If you extract raw materials, item is always destroyed, and Upgrades are lost in the process
  • If you extract an Upgrade, you have a X% chance to keep the rest of the item intact.
    - 20% for Basic Salvage Kit
    - 40% for Fine Salvage Kit
    - 60% for Journeyman’s Salvage Kit
    - 80% for Master’s Salvage Kit
    - 100% for Black Lion Salvage Kit

Pros:
- You get to choose what to extract
- You get to keep your base item (as long as you don’t extract the raw materials, doh)
Cons:
- You have to spend 2 charges to get both Raw materials and Upgrade

I hardly even played Guild Wars 1 and I’ve thought since the beginning that BL salvage kits should be like this, they just do not make sense as they are.

I was just proposing the simplest solution to the keeping armor/upgrades problem by introducing perfect salvage kits, which in GW1 did not salvage materials, but I could definitely get behind the progressive increase in item retention.

Yeah, but it would’t make sense for Perfect Kit to salvage normal materials anyway. What a waste it would be

In GW2, however, there’s the 50% chance to get rarer materials on BL kit, so it’s a little different.
With our suggestion, the better kits should also increase the amount of materials you get, to make it attractive to use higher kits on raw materials.

You’re right, that would make more kits attractive. I hope they see this thread if they haven’t already thought about doing something like this.

1+, the current salvage system is silly, GW1 system was way better.

Just stating this, but I also feel like the amount of money sinks is killing the the evolution of ourselves as players, I feel like I have to stay the same or lose the ability to make dough to figure out all the potential playstyles.

I couldn’t agree more. I feel like the massive amount of gold sinks are there to artificially create depth to the game since game content is limited. While I can see it from ANet’s pov, sometimes the amount of sinks just seems ridiculous lol.
