NinjaEd…if you want to be just an archer…make a warrior. That’s the class that has the non-pet related ranger things.
Honestly, there is nothing wrong with the pet. You can be melee or ranged and make full use of your pet. You can even mostly ignore the pet minus needing to hit f4 when one dies.
The class is fine as it is, and is balanced completely around having a pet. If you hate pets then this ranger is not for you. Thief has your shortbow and warrior your longbow. Both don’t have pets, and really don’t have any complicated mechanics, both of those are even aoe spamable and the warrior especially is still capable of surprisingly high single target damage with the bow (including giving people an aoe might buff when using the exploding arrow inside of the adrenaline fire arrow).
Likewise, Runiir, there is nothing wrong with wanting to play without a pet.
Effectiveness (or lack thereof) aside, I personally enjoy alot of the animal-esque weapon skills the Ranger has access to, in particular the Sword+Dagger or Sword+Axe sets.
On one hand, I know the pet is holding the ranger’s personal damage back.
On the other hand, the pet doesn’t feel very interactive.
Here’s what I’d love to see change in the Ranger profession:
- Give Pets 1-2 more skills that the Ranger can manually use like F2, so that we can play a true Beastmaster closer to how you could in GW1
- Give Ranger the option to play without a Pet, instead gaining access to some Stances/Aspects.
However, Rangers would need to wait 15 seconds without a Pet before becoming able to use a Stance/Aspect, and vice-versa.
That is not gonna happen , this is what i would say if Anet would stick to any of theirs initial ideas.
Now i will say , this is likely to not happen. Why you may ask?
Well the reason necro pet system is so bad , is rangers. Anet did want to to add control over necro pets because it would be similar to rangers.
What does this says?
Unless Anet is willing to toss way a core idea , that actually cut another class from being upgraded , this wont happen.
If you remove pet and make it a stance and give them other stances that disable the pet entirely…then the shift from one to the other should not be able to be done in combat. I am also rather enamored with the animal based weapon skills (the gs bear maul and eagle leap are incredibly well done).
As for more f skills from the pets, I disagree. That’s what your utility skills are for. If you want beastmaster mode then equip ranger shouts. They take up actual skill slots just like in GW1.
It could be done in combat as long as it’s not efficient.
In terms of UI, assuming pets get 2 more skills, let’s imagine:
With Pet:
F1 – assist/attack my target
F2 – pet special skill #1
F3 – pet special skill #2
F4 – return
F5 – Change Pet
F6 – Dismiss Pet
Without Pet:
F1 – Stance/Aspect #1
F2 – Stance/Aspect #2
F3 – Stance/Aspect #3
F5 – Call Pet #1
F6 – Call Pet #2
- If you are using a Stance, you must wait (at least) 15 seconds AFTER the stance ends, before you can use Call Pet
- If you are using a Pet, you must wait (at least) 15 seconds AFTER dismissing the pet, before you can use a Stance.
I say 15 seconds, but could be 30.
So what you want is to remove the core mechanic of the ranger? Thats about as likely to happen as a Sylvari giving birth to a cross between a Norn and an Asura
I wouldn’t want pets to be removed.
Just give Rangers the option to play with or without them.
Engineers don’t need to play with Turrets or Weapon bundles.
Necromancers don’t need to play with minions.
I sort of understand the reasoning behind this, but I don’t necessarily agree with it. The uniqueness of the Ranger is by having a pet and that was not the purpose of the Ranger. It’s almost like people asking for Monks to come back – Monks don’t fit in this game. A Ranger without a pet just doesn’t fit in this game (in my opinion).
Well , to take the ranger pet is = to take any other core class mechanic away also.
That means people will have room to ask for all kind of crazy stuff heh.

I prefer the ranger skill kit, its just if you played GW1, I had the option to make my dps good along with some interuption abilities, or make my pet dps really good with some interuption abilities. Now, I’m forced to mix and match and I only have access to control 1 of my pets abilities. So trying to combine combo fields like leap isn’t easy because of even with a pet, I don’t have much control over it. Also I can only have the pet on passive which it does nothing unless I command it to do something, or aggressive where it attacks anything I target even if I [Tab] to the wrong target. I dont suggest remove pets, I played more of a beastmaster ranger in GW1 towards the end but I did enjoy having my own dps without carrying a pet around. Maybe I just have to really look for a build to accomplish this but it is still very limiting. (btw, how is the attack speed on longbow for ranger? MY only concern is if I did pick that build that I would hate it for being so slow in combat that my dmg would be minimal.)

I love having my pets, but; there are times when I would really like to have my pet stay stowed because they can get in the way. Jumping and climbing are the biggest issue for me. I can stow my pet while I jump up to the Vista, or in a puzzle, but if I take any damage whatsoever, it pops right back out. This goes along with my suggestion to give us an option to manually toggle combat mode. Just because I take damage, does not mean I’m in combat, and when I am in combat mode, there are things I cannot do, like jump properly, or map travel. Having to wait to go back into neutral is a real PITA. Please give us more control over our actions.
I want a stowed pet to stay stowed until I call it.
