=============================================================

W E A T H E R
Sunshine is boring.
Let us feel the power of nature!
Remember, what do you feel when you’re under a cover in the street, while heavy raining? A little excitement, am I right?
A nice rain, or even better, storms! It will spin things up, i’m sure!
Inside and outside the cities. Random, and long (1-2 hours) duration.
NOTE: 50% of effectiveness comes from the sound effects, so they need to be perfect.

Some area styles shoud have their own kind:

  • Orr: HEAVY Thunder and raining. Purple zapps. Dark fog. It will make those boring areas 10 times more exciting!
  • Jungles: Raining, some deep thunder, white fog. I hope we won’t get lost :S
  • Black Citadel: Acid rain, gray smoke. Who cares? Heat up those smelters!
  • Divinity’s Reach: Light rain, windy. I’m glad I bought that fur coat! <3
  • Lion’s Arch: Mid strong beach storm. Isn’t the best time to sail out, right?
  • The Grove: Crystal clean raindrops, rainbow. I feel life!
  • Hoelbrak: Snowy & Windy. Outside, sometimes heavy ice storms. By the Bear’s spirit, this was a strong one!
  • Rata Sum: Less rain than thunder. Excellent time for some special experiment!
  • Crystal Desert: Burning sun, mirror-like reflecting sand at distance, sometimes Heavy sand storms! I…need….water!

Stick to the Concept
Whats up with all of those beautiful concept arts we have and none of them made well?
As I see, for example, someone draw Ebonhawk perfectly. Its giant, its a real fort amongst the mountains.
And what we got now? A flat, square shaped little town that supposed to be Epic. No. Its more like a pathetic amount of stone bricks.
If the concept artists made great job, let their dream become ""reality"". Even those giant sculptures on the side of the mountain crack road…. Why we can’t see them?
Old scuplture ruins on the field? Awesome armors that made badly in 3D?
This is a very important part that needs a lot of attention. This game needs epicness, and concept designs are one of the best ways. Use them.

Dungeon Redesign Concepts
Players will decide, which pats they want to complete the dungeon on.
The paths are all logical, which means they are making a progress to weaken the endBoss, or to have a weapon against it, or make themselve stronger, so they can finish the boss off. When they are about to finish the chosen path, they have a new vote for the final tactic move.

Examples:
Dungeon of Arah. The party chosed to gather the parts of a crystal shield, which was the property of an ancient great warrior who tried to beat the endBoss, but the shield cracked into 5 pieces during the finght long ago.
(Including a GW2 brush-style cinematic of the tale)
The shards gives power to the little bosses who guards them.
Since the endBoss shoots destroying energy from its eyes, the path finishes can be the following:

  • They re-forge the shield with a spell (NPC follower does), and one party member can wield it, and reflect the damaging bean onto the boss itself. The others are luring and damaging the boss.
  • The members absorb the shards with a spell, so they are all a bit reflective, which means they’re all stronger until they complete the dungeon.
  • They place the shards around the boss, making an energy bulb, and as long the boss is inside, its weaker, and can’t damage players outside.
  • Or they go the top of the endBoss’s hall through a hard jumping puzzle, at the end of it they blow up the stones so the sunlight lights parts of the room.
They place the shards there, making damaging sunlight fields which weaks the boss down and buffs the players up.

Towns and Villages near Roads
Some of them would add a lot to many explorable area. I mean, the game already has some, but we need more, and they need to be bigger. More opportunities. More activity (gathering, palying with children for karma, helping people out, etc)

Time-scale
Actual time-scale is very fast. Reduce it to 2+2 hours peroids.
It feels really bad when the nights are bright, and short. Let it be darker and longer in duration. Sigil of Night and Day should be balanced to the lengh of the peroids.
If its 2 hours of Daylight with +10% dmg, 2 hours of Nighttime should have equal +10% dmg, or if its only 1 hour, then around +15%

Crafting Stations, Trading Posts, Banks
The world lacks of these. In my opinion, every area should have at least one of each, but separated. Just spread them around the map in logical places, so we don’t have to travel around the word just to make a bank drop or craft something.
If direct bank-access is a problem at crafting stations, I’m sure it can be blocked on the battlefields.
Anyway, Cities should have more crafting area too. At least 2 of them, but places like Divinity’s Reach can have some inside of the district houses.

Filling Unused Space
Cities have open houses, but they are empty. I’m sure they can be used for Craft, Special Merchants, or else. Just make those districts live and useful.
Divinity’s Reach should built like Italian fort-villages or the Favelas in Rio inside some quarters. Lot of tiny roads between buildings, lot of stairs, etc.
Karma vendors for Dyes, special receipes, special consumables.
Mini events (like get some candy for the poor children), story tellers, anything.
Random Jumping Puzzle chests hidden and rotating locations, so players will search and use these roads more often.

Dinamic Groving
When we look at Lion’s Arch for example, we already saw it damaged.
But when everything goes well, by the time, it should improve itself, like the rest of the cities. New areas, new buildings, new banks, etc.
I hope one day we’ll see these cities twice more exciting. It isn’t hard if the developers know what epic elements they need to use. The new unique looks will be awesome!

A post on Variance blog about a reddit post gave me an idea.
Why the sanctum isn’t placed close to LA, and it should replace the holo-dragon as a visual feature? Why are we using sea ships, and not balloons from the empty place close to the jail?

As I always mention: A little more immaginary can make the real wonders.

Divinity’s Reach has a nice construction yard above the Great Collapse,
Racial Capitals are dead & LA overpopulated. Pinpointing the right solutions:

Lion’s Arch:

  • Base concept is awesome. It needs mutch more block building with nice streets, wells, population, merchants. The buildings on the islands are standing on pillars, like in Venice.
  • Some basic water road route with automated boats that players can hop-in.
  • Above these, there are those ship remains, skyroads, huge flags and scraps.
  • Huge dock with the legendary ships of the council members. Each of them has special style and unique thropies on the board. With interior, RolePlaying Ready!
  • Banks, TPs, Crafting stations spreaded at least on 3 location to prevent location overfloods. Eatch place is a little bit different. (Common, Black Market, VIP)
  • The pirate cave should have fabricated ghetto houses and tents.
  • More to explore in the old LA ruins that remembers us what we done there back in GW1.

Racial Capital Cities:

  • Divinity’s Reach needs more interesting activities. (WIP!)
  • Black Citadel should look like a massive war-factory with built-in barracks, taverns, PVE build (with critical dmg) & WWW blueprint testfields, massive armory.
  • Hoelbrak: Nice as the way is, but filling it with nomad tents around would make it a real Norn capital as a sign of Norn’s past…
  • Rata Sum: Make it Smart. Lot of precise portals would make everything quickly reachable by foot, no WPs needed. Since it holds the Collage, I wish to see more of it.
  • The Goove: Somehow more dinamical and wonderful. The current build is terrible, very few likes it. I would take some inspiration from the AVATAR movie, as there was a nice spring-road up to the top, and each turn’s level had its useage.
  • [Ebonhawke]:https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/suggestions/iR-Sands-of-Death-House-of-Reeven

Above all of this, the NPCs should reflect the life itself.

  • Merchants shouting (as built-in trading inspiration)
  • Travellers wondering on view (as built-in explore inspiration)
  • kids playing (as life illusion)
  • Student-teacher tours (as built-in lore telling)
  • Soldiers & Mercenaties chatting (as built-in event inspiration)
  • etc

Special Rule? 2 minute cooldown on free WP usage in the cities – so people need to move too. Isn’t a big sacrifice for the illusion of living world.

I can make a 3D concept by using Q3 Engine GTK Radiant map maker if you guys wish to see my vision in pictures.

I really would welcome these things

When Guild Wars 2 wasn’t released, ArenaNet always talked about a breathing world, but the result as it is now is not as I expected it. The graphics and the areas itself are undoubtedly beautiful, but it lacks of some cool effects (which for me is very important).

Depending on the area I want to see epic storms, rain, snow, blizzards, dense fog, sand storms etc…..but you don’t see these things a lot. My favorite fractal is the Snowblind Fractal just because its one of the few places with a nice effect which makes you barely see anything, what a cool place to fight and what a nice surrounding by an epic blizzard! Why don’t some areas sometimes have such nice effects as well, the game would feel much better.

I also like your other suggestions, it would make these places way better!

Btw, the Cursed Shore overhaul concept is absolutely amazing, I would like it to be in that way! And nice PS skills ^^

I would love more dynamic weather.
But have it more differentiated between “good weather”/“bad weather”.
Have early morning fogs in areas where there is surface water like lakes or rivers. Have the sun traverse the sky. Make the clouds a bit more dynamic, we should have times when it is sunny and times when it is overcast. I also await seasons, please let us have seasons.

After digging’ in Lore and spent 2 days for new suggestions, I’ve realised that the purchaseable lore stuffs are very limited. So a little update would be nice:

Karma Merchants

  • Asura: Selling nice technical gadgets, such as special buffs (skill effects) and ultility tools.
  • Human: Culture foods are good, but some special buff/item about the belief of gods
  • Norn: with connection to the ancient animal spirits and nomad lifestyle
  • Sylvari: something about the Mother Tree’s blessing, or nature buffs.
  • Charr: Battle-born technology, such as flamethrower, equippable rifle/nade/weapons, cloak, special buffs, etc-
Explained: A new kind of buffs as “tool” nurnishment, witch gives effect of a skill, or just special use items. These can reinforce the lore by a big shot.
When you wander around in other race territorries, you should be able to get your dirty little hands on their technology. Even if its a norn tent, or an asuran tech tootbrush.

The other thing I wanted to mention is about the kind of events these races have.
They’re all the kitten same! And its real bad. When an Asuran doing something, you can bet on things will blow up and monsters will be teleported there, then fight them until the npc don’t fixing it. Boooooriiing! All the races doing their same event copies.
It wouldn’t be hard to let us LEARN from them, and having deeper peak to their every day.

Some asked how would they make huge-looking cities with this engine, without wasting.
It is simple: When a real fantasy stronghold/city needs to be made in a game, all the developers needs to do is to map a bigger slice of the city, then make its edges closed openly for some reasons (road uncrossable because of collapse, or just people, or anything that isn’t a simple wall or gate), but allow players to see a blured vision of the rest of the city. This is how I made my JKA Mos Eisley map feel huge. I’ve used camera-mirrors and scenery walls after the playable edge (invisible wall caulked)

Players knew they can’t go there, but at least they didn’t felt they fell in a well.

I speak as a Minecraft player, and I can tell you that any environmental effect that hinders your sight of the ambient is horribly annoying. Even more so when it’s accompanied by sounds. When I play in multiplayer minecraft, whenever it starts to rain, there’s always somebody who yells how annoying is the rain. That’s the reason why, I think, the night is just slightly darker than the day, and the few rain effects are also extremely light.

“Filling Unused Space”

going to actually vote that one down. LOTS of that “unused space” is used quite heavily by the roleplaying community, to the point where finding a spot that isn’t a) part of an event chain, b) frequented by non-rpers (jumping puzzles) and c) not already used by another major guild can be extremely challenging.

If anything I would support MORE little cubbyholes and interesting little knooks and crannies with “nothing in them” to give RPers somewhere to go and play without being trolled all the time.

Great post by the way.

I like all but one thing.

The screenshot of the weather in Orr. I personally think it is cheesy and takes the atmosphere away from Orr.

Right now it is desolate and foreboding, and you can see a landscape that was destroyed by powerful magic and hundreds of years of being at the bottom of the ocean.

If you add thunder and rain and mist/fog to it, you lose all the above elements, because there will be too much going on, a sensory overload.

On the other hand I have mentioned in another thread that Orr should be regenerating and slowly turn into an entirely different zone. Trahearne started to cleanse Orr but nothing has happened since then (sadly), maybe once the land regenerates the climate/weather can return to this devastated area too.

The problem is, I get the feeling this game is trying to capitalise on the $$$$ revenue from casual players, and short term players, not the long term players. The content updates reflect this heavily, and it is disheartening to see them chasing dollars.

Great comments ^^
In my opinion, an MMO Map designer needs to put a twist in the design;
I’m a roleplayer myself, and I feel it a bit of problem that we usualy play on empty areas, where is no mutch life-like enviroment.
IF the map would be designed to mix kind of players without concentrating them in one place (as seen in LA), that would benefit everyone:

  • Less loading
  • Better FPS
  • Better enviroment for Roleplay
  • Better opportunities to meet new people & make friendships (catch the guy, he may falls in love on rp)

About the weather: Since its the best way to make dinamic terrains, must be programmed.
This feature can dinamically multiply the worth of any areas. PvE mostly,
but in PVP & GVG, I think a huge battle in mud and heavy rain would be a mindblowing moment for anyone. (Lagg is an another topic)

Since the concept of “Living & Breathing World” commands all of these features to be released in game as soon as possible. Be patient as I am –
I’m sure this will be in the game.

Although rainbow grove seemed to me too sugar. And with the re-design of cities do not agree too. Now everything is quite fine. Weather effects would be useful. But the cities themselves even now look at the top five. What I rly did not mind – it’s increase of max range of the view. And the beautiful two-dimensional decoration backdrops outside borders of locations. Something like this is already exists (in black citadel, snowden drifts), but need more and everywhere

Yep, when I’ve finished, It really was “too cute”. However, the Groove is a lifestrong place, so should reflect it also.
What you see is just the “skybox”, but not a real mirrored border terrain. It looks good – since you can’t really reach the very edge of maps – every map design based on a bowl logic. Every area placed with mountains around…

It is interesting that you don’t agree with the city redesigns. Two thing is possible;

  • You don’t have as mutch need for quality as we do (’just care on having fun and thats all) – and its NOT a bad thing.
  • Or you’re playing in low population server where player mass isn’t a problem.

What I’m looking for is supporters – Any developer team needs inspiring feedbacks to put more effort into their products – since sticking at simple quality standards won’t move the market further.

Here are some of my suggestions:
Things from GW1:

  • First person view, it should be as easy as just zooming in, just like in GW1.
  • Trading, just like in GW1.
  • Customizing the HUD, just like in GW1.

Some new ideas:

  • Interesting dungeon pre-boss bosses, something like in WoW, each boss was unique most of the time, in GW2 its just like, oh another my sized humanoid… how about crazy giant plant thing in Twilight Arbor (no the end boss is just a copy pasted creature), fight a giant golem in CoE (or what ever its name is) in various golem suits, just off the top of my head).
  • Arah story mode’s ending, less cinematic more, players actually fighting Zaitan.
  • Unique paths in dungeons, something like: In Ac 1 path would lead trough the spiders and other beast in the lower part where it all about brute force, the second would lead trough the ghosts where you need more tactics and movement and the 3rd would be more of a jumping puzzle and solving puzzles.
  • PvP and targeting, I hate it that auto target (Tab) chooses pets, minion, illusions and spirits, It doesn’t need to not select the adds, just that is should prioritize the other players.
  • Either give everyone the +25% movement speed or no-one, it a huge advantage in PvE to move around faster, its like half of the players have a mount and the other half doesn’t.
  • Unique Elite Skill quests, this would be awesome to have to complete unique quest chains to unlock Elite Skills. Fending of hordes of enemies using a Charrzooka, defeating a graw shaman to gain Whirlwind, complete a quest for the thief’s guild to gain Thieves Guild, and so on.

Just some stuff that bothers me right now.
