General Dungeon Discussion Thread - Part 2
A guy is arguing with me that people in full exotics should be able to beat “challenging group content.” I argue that what kind of challenge could it be if people can beat it with a 15% stat handicap.
The challenges in this game have never really been stat-dependant, and I’d be very surprised if they suddenly went back on that.
Imo one of the strongest points of this game is that I can beat all challenges in a variety of setups, with my dungeon running friends using (near-)meta compositions as well as with my casual guildies in a variety of special-snowflake builds, as long as we adjust our strategies accordingly..
I’d be very disappointed if challenging content meant content you really only could beat with a very reduced number of builds/setups/strategies.

You don’t need to limit the content by class, but yes, strategy should be required, if they aren’t giving us unique mechanics, you’re just going to have another world boss that everyone uses 1 on until dead. Builds should also be a given, with the ability to swap traits at any time, swapping out traits and traitlines between fights is an very easy to meet expectation, and allows more design possibilities if the encounters are design for everything specific classes can do, rather than limited to the worst build possible.
The setup shouldn’t matter, but playing each class brought to the maximum potential(or close to it) should be required, otherwise you’re only creating a challenge for the worst players, not everyone.
Just putting on an ascended weapon gives you a 5% damage boost, you make the fights take less time regardless of rotation. If you add in the stat values for a full ascended vs. full exotic plus the difference in base defense on armour, you gain a big safety net, if the content is tuned to the bottom of the group(greens?blues?exotics?) then ascended sets will make the content trivial unless it has specific mechanics that must be dodged/interacted with. I think I’m back at specific strategies being required(can slightly vary based on class).

What happens with cc’ing balth? I’ve not seen that before.
If you hit him with some ccs they stop removing defiance, your headshots can be reduced to just a couple hundred dmg and no way to deep freeze a second time.

Gross.
Daredevil
PvE: 3/10 (possible 5/10 if perma-Weakness becomes desired above top DPS. Distracting Daggers and the Slow daggers are very good utility skills too)
PvP: 7/10 (Daredevil + Acro = people will want to kill themselves)
Flavor: 10/10

I don’t like all the threads that pop up about the meta in general discussion. Most are pretty toxic, as well as misinformed are just there to spread propaganda. But is it just me, or are they getting worse?
Seems like there are people going out of their way to lock those threads by seeing who can be the biggest kittens. I won’t point any fingers, but I think you read the most recent ones you know which I am referring too.
Yeah the “zerker meta” threads pop up pretty much 2-3 times a week. Kinda sad but that’s what happens when the majority of the playerbase spams 1/F for loot in SW.
I only check those threads when I’m really, really, really bored. Or if I just feel like arguing with a brick wall. They’re a scourge.
Speaking of the Daredevil anyone think ranger is still gonna get staff with its elite?

Yes but it’s going to suck for pvp and pve and will be riddled by bugs.
And the final attack of the autoattack chain will be a self-applied knockback.
I don’t get it why people say dungeons aren’t well designed.
Let’s pick CoE story.
The room with Evolved Destroyer is filled with inquest. You can only see this room through one window at start of the dungeon which isn’t even directly in the usual path.
After you complete the dungeon those inquest get replaced by destroyers.
Lawl indeed [dis can’t be reel! ehhemegeeehd?!?!]
Keep in mind tho that it’ll probably something like teakettle and very accessible to pugs, don’t get your hopes up s0n

Double lawl followed by a choked sob
Seriously, they should disable dodge on rangers and increase toughness or something. What’s the kittening point, right? Clearly a weapon designed to LOSE CONTROL OF YOUR CHARACTER… It’s unfair, huh? IS IT UNFAIR, REVENANTS? HUH?!?!?!
/smashes printer
Ahem.
Sooo. The specialisation is gonna suck so much that I’ll probably destroy/transfer most equip to my engi in a fit of rage… other than that (while I wait to find the will to go out and buy icecream with like 35 degrees), I’ll play a funny game!
Pick 1 trait, 1 weapon skill and 1 utility for the Drood. The suckier, the merrier.
Trait: The power of choice: regeneration applied by you is stronger. + 75%
Weapon skill: “Can’t dodge!”: shout loudly at your enemy and throw the stick—erm staff. Apply 3 stacks of bleeding (for 4secs, we gotta make sure it’s not op!) and immobilise (1s). Root yourself for 1.8s. kitten cooldown.
Utility: Glyph of Intention: you get rooted in place while casting, as intended. 3s cast. You become the avatar of.. err… the avatar of a random Shining Blade (sorry, we keeping the cool aspects for the rev!): while in this form, your attacks gain additional range and damage, because you’a a ranger so you GOTTA RANGE, get it, mofo? All melee attacks are disabled while in this forum—-sorry form. At the end the aspect, a thousand (more like 3 or so) arrows will give regen to your allies and bleeding to your enemies.
Bonus! Rain of banners, utility: 2s cast, you summon 4 spirits and bind them to your will with the power of lov—nature. The spirits are unmovable. The spirits will die after 4 seconds.
Forgot to say, the trait is a grandmaster.

Why is burning speed so kittening useless?
Combine it with dragon’s tooth + phoenix at the start of an encounter and swap to staff during burning speed’s cast. It hits for pretty high damage! Not useless at all
Useless piece of kitten skill on a (not useless, alas) piece of kitten profession. I wish it weren’t this strong because I loathe it with all my heart. I confirm the sentiment I’ve been having towards elly for over a year now: excruciating. Solo done, not gonna touch it again with a 100feet pole.
Next time I complain about ranger dodges being unreliable and clunky? remind me of this moment. And hit me with a baseball bat so i remember better.

You heard it guys! Get your bats ready, chances are we will be using them in the next 24 hours. Heck who I am kidding, I mean the next 24 minutes.
On the plus side candy might be involved.
… just keep the bat for when they announce the drood.
Or until I try to beat some stupid record on my ranger again. God, worst idea ever. The things my imaginary pride makes me do… “gotta solo this and that at 5am to prove that you can!”
Caffeine! I hate you.

Mwahahaaha… you were timing dodge with Burning speed? RIP RIP RIP.

Yeah that’s the problem — it’s not really a good skill to reactively evade attacks with because it has a cast time and because the evade frame doesn’t last for the full duration of the skill’s animation. It’s only useful for damage, positioning, and stacking might(+fury) most of the time :P

Good thing guild wars is based around active combat with noticeable tells on enemies so we have time to react with our skills, right?
I guess I’m the only one who actually uses burning speed for the evade, as much as I can to preserve that precious endurance. It’s the best for Alpha’s AoE’s <3

Well it’s not like I said you can’t use it for that. It’s a lot less reliable than just dodging is though. It also doesn’t matter how noticeable a tell is sometimes, if you have high ping then you cannot reactively evade it sometimes because it can mean the damage happens at the start of an animation or sometimes a fraction of a second before it depending on how bad it is.
Heck with STRAYA ping (300+) I sometimes get hit mid dodge animation lol.
Yeah fishball I know how that feels all too well, it’s awful.
But I had the luxury of testing latency differences compared to what I’m used to on EU, cause I was given the luxury of testing an NA account for the hell of it.
It’s just… weird.
Like, I press the keybind to dodge and my character is doding the same instant that I’m pressing the button… wtf? Feels like the game is spying on me and reading my mind.
Also I went to Lupi and it was strange… I actually had to wait a second after Lupi began his kick animation before pressing the button to dodge, same thing with his autoattacks in phases 2 and 3. It felt really cool but like… idk, it’s just strange because on EU it’s not possible to dodge these things unless you press the button the exact same time he begins the animation, so it’s necessary to an extent to just memorise the exact intervals in time when he’s going to use an attack.
The ping I had on NA was ~60 and it was wireless when I was testing it too. It really put it into perspective how much of a sacrifice it can be to play with friends :P

For those interested, an analysis (involving actual math instead of just feels) of tanky guardians versus berserker’s guardians in fractal trios: http://dtguilds.com/forum/m/6563292/viewthread/23980393-analysis-tanky-guardian-worth-in-trios/post/last#last
your calc didn’t include nomad’s which is obviously the superior tank set.
I actually learned pretty alright to evade lupi’s aa and bait his swipe in p2 with that kittened skill (could be due to all the learn-or-die stuff I had to do on ranger) – but it took a rather extreme amount of deaths and lots of anger. Still, it only works when my connection is stable. My occasional lag spikes made it impossible to use it as a habit… I was also heavily frustrated by ring of earth and its strange delayed animation. Let’s not even talk about winds, even tho I really liked ring+winds combo, when I could use it.
Well, hopefully I won’t do it again while caffeinated and sleepless.
I won’t do it again period. I’m back to classes and characters that LIKE me.

Very interesting stuff. Love the math and love the fact that you’re looking at alternatives with a more practical mindset.
Curious, have you run with the different options at all? What was your take on it?
Great, did my usual daily arah p2 and dced after brie died and someone was watching the cutscene so didin’t get any reward. Yayyy.

I should seriously roll monk.. but if I’m gonna go healer, it’ll be ele or rev. My guard will always be a knight!
Orrr I could just stop playing like everyone else. But then again, dyes are so pretty.
2015. Pleasantly surprised
This date leaves them almost no time to polish tempest, berserker, daredevil, forge and druid. Unless they will spam beta weekends till release and will make corrections on the fly.
What is a drood? Can you eat it?

I haven’t, yet. I’m pretty interested in trying it out though, just to see how it goes first hand.
Beuh, runs are smoother. Slower if everything goes perfectly, cleaner if there are fails involved. Since I play with spoj, fails were ensued so sometimes it’s cool to rp as a paladin-tank-saves the day whatever. But there’s no need to go so freaking defensive tbf… a few defensive stats in the armor and you can almost facetank the mossman.
That dataset was very interesting Zui, thanks for linking it. Interesting to see how the numbers actually stack up after the couple of threads we’ve had here recently.
Sigil of Paralyzation doesn’t seem to work on Lupi anymore
Looks like I will be taking a break from Dungeons to focus on WvW this week. See you all next week.
