You dont need the WP if your team is good.

it’s an easily accessible waypoint/chest that saves a good amount of time (and walking) on a casual run. what’s not to like?

also @dalanor, the only evade spam that I’ve seen is from stalkers when they hit something with their burrow attack, so you just have to be in melee range (they only do some autoattack in melee) – too bad they aggro on NPCs and the evade procs when hitting NPCs with the burrow. yay NPCs!!!!

there’s the also the one which fades a bit when it uses its super long evade frame (scavenger?) which I think might also be triggered on hit as well.

the normal graveling has some evades too, but it has animations (built into some attack? not sure)

In p1 you can use the wp after the burrow event, in p2 after the trap event. It saves time on walking and that time cancels out the time needed to kill Kholer.

kholer is considered hard?

this tells you how skilled these players are. apparently all these stackers don’t know how to do a fight where all you need are:
-projectile defence (ascalonian rangers and elementalists)
-a stunbreak or two (warrior and necro CC spam)
-condition cleanse (rangers, necros)
-eyes (to see the obvious tell of kholer himself, where it’s only hard if there is effect spam)

hell it’s harder to do kholer stacked (if you have low DPS, which is less of a problem postpatch, or if you get bad RNG on his positioning) than to simply fight him in the open and maybe call target and focus the more problematic adds.

sure, it’s a decently fun fight, but in no way is kholer hard for even halfway decent 5-man parties…

He’s harder than all the other bosses in AC. That’s the point.

Pretty sure you are talking about graveling stalkers. They gain evade frames when they land any of their attacks on a party member, it is not a ‘dodge ability’ and as far as i know working as intended.

Let’s hope 2014 is the year of “substantial” content for guild wars 2. Up until this point no serious MMO player could say we’ve had substantial content, only features. For pve, we’ve had a lot of temporary living story open world content which is cool but in moderation, it has been done in excess and is a terrible dev decision.

My opinion on why we haven’t received substantial pve content(dungeons, raids) is because the devs are scared of spreading their community through instanced content. They have mentioned this sort of killed gw1, because the playerbase was spread. Thats probably why they want to do a lot of open world content compared to instanced content. The problem is that you can’t really put difficult or mechanics in open world content, because in open world its just a bunch of random people together who arn’t organized, sometimes guilds are there but that can be hard with the megaserver system. This is why open world content is so mindless and zergy, because the dev’s can’t realistically rely on coordination to achieve difficult fights, so everything becomes easy mode.

As for teq and the wurm, the only actually difficulty with these is getting people coordinated, the mechanics are really quite easy. Right now I don’t see any way they can put difficult “raid” style open world content and have it be done realistically simply due to the inability to coordinate. Looking at difficult pve dungeons/raids from other games, its obvious we can’t have that open world with spawn timers in the hours, and only being able to get 70 out of your 130 guildies into a map, and therefore being stuck with another 60 that are filled with people who don’t want to get in ts, or have never done the event.

So now we realize why we can’t really have difficult open world content, and why difficult content may not be achievable in guild wars 2 when the devs are scared of adding too much instanced content.

The aoe cap already kills the chance of raid content. Imagine a 25 man raid with the mechanics of GW2 …
1 warr, 1 ranger in each party for max damage.
1 guardian to provide all 5 party members defensive skills.
Fill up other slots with offensive characters as needed.
Sound lame to me.

With the latest Scarlet fight in the giant drill is a good step in the right direction. Still zergy, but more or less in an instanced environment, thus more controlled with 30-50 people. But with the above mentioned reasons i can’t imagine fights beside DPS checks and gimmicky mechanics.

To be fair, from the videos I’ve seen, Kohler is not the hardets AC boss, that goes to the rumbler enemy at the end of path 3. Though yes, dodging kohler is easier said than done, and a nightmare for the first dungeon ever. If you havn’t learned to dodge very very well, you’re going to be in trouble.
Thats what bugs me though, he requires such detailed reaction time, and hes the very first boss, its too big a spike.

This smells like trollbait but ok…let me make an analogy. Say there is a boss that spams knockdowns, almost constantly. You’re playing a guardian, and someone in your party asks you to provide stability. “No” you say, “I want to do something else. I don’t feel like giving you stability, I like spirit weapons.” You can see how that would be selfish – your class has the perfect tool for the situation but you refuse to use it because “i don’t want to”.

sorrow, my issue isn’t with using or not using reflect, thats up to the individual. My issue is someone being called useless or pathetic for not following someone elses build and having their priorities. A mesmer without deflection is still a mesmer, people have various priorities, or heck, different skills unlocked if your in the AC area which would have lower levels.
Selfish or not, its not irony or a ‘waste of space.’ Selfish depends on the situation(as it isn’t -that- critical in most places), but selfish in certain situations is somewhat fair, calling someone worthless for not having a certain skill at all times is just dumb.

In the situation your are talking about (kholer), you are useless if you don’t bring reflects. There’s nothing else you’re providing except mediocre dps – there’s no boons to strip and no use for portal. So if you aren’t going to reflect your are better off bringing any other class for that fight – that’s what they mean.

also slotting feedback=/=build. I don’t know why its such a burden to slot one skill that makes the fight 100% easier for everyone.

Don’t take things so personally. They aren’t calling you worthless, they are saying in that situation, the way you are playing is not contributing. Instead of doing the one thing your class can do well, you choose not to for no reason other then #iplayhowiwant

Correct me if i’m wrong, but let me hear.
If you go in a 5 man party in a dungeon, it’s group content, right?
You fight as a group for your goal, which is mainly to go trough the content.
As an individual you are less important, group support in various form become important however.

A great example would be Signet of Might from warriors. Passively it provides 180 power to the user. Great! But … If you swap it out to For Great Justice it would be more beneficial. Better party wide power increase (5*105=525) and fury, that can be stacked further anyway and the Mights can be keep up permanently due to the CD is the same as the duration. See? You swaped one skill, you give your group more even if you “lost” a little as an individual.

Now let’s see another example. CoF p1 endboss, the effigy. The dude has basically 3 attacks.
A flamethrower type move, which can be just sidestepped.
A big “inukeyourfacedown” move, which can be dodged easily.
And finally the knockdown thing. Since it’s a projectile it can be reflected too, but mesmers has acces to Stability too. Low duration, but since it’s instant cast it gets the job done too.
So Feedback. What you provide with it to the group?
First of all, they don’t have to dodge, move around etc., so it provides better damage uptime.
Secondly, it prevent to knockdown your allies. It can lead to that they get roasted with the flamethrower attack or a crystal will fall on them from the ceiling.
Thirdly, it negates some damage. This attack hurts, the less damage you take is the better.
Fourthly (?), you reflect it back to it’s source, meaning that while you defended your group from a specific attack, you dealt damage to, meanwhile a smoke screen for example just absorbs it.

Honorable mention that reflects got bonus from damage modifiers, your crit chance and your crit damage. Thats why this kind of thing can happen. Look at the combat log.

Here’s the problem, Mike:

You are a new “dungeoneer”. You have attempted one dungeon. It was Ascalonian Catacombs, a dungeon I personally hate, but that most people fly through with ease. However, new players do not, because dungeons are the “hardcore” PvE that this game offers (along with things like Teq and Wurm). It takes practice.

You are posting on here, acting like an expert on the dungeon PvE in GW2 when you honestly haven’t even experienced any significant part of it. My first dungeon was a Caudecus Manor story solo. I did not succeed.

What you’re doing here, is you’re making yourself look really bad by acting like you know everything there is to know about dungeons. It’s like trying to tell a seasoned painter they’re doing it wrong (or even that art is a a lame garbage waste of time) after taking Art 101: Introduction to Drawing. The dungeon runners here aren’t simply dungeon speed runners, they are mentors, they are theory crafters, they know this game’s PvE in and out. And You’re trying to give advice as though you (or these elusive guildies) know everything there is to know, when there is no credibility in your claim.

I know what it is like. When I first ventured here, I argued with the best Arah runners about Arah p4. I acted like I knew it all, from my 2 failed runs and 1 success. It was a really hard lesson. The point is, you should be learning these dungeons, not acting like there’s nothing left to learn and that the systems are inherently broken, just because you are parroting what you are hearing from folks because it makes you feel better about the failed AC run.

I get it. Please. This is a place for learning and community. We have all taken efforts to make this place a good start for newbies (check the stickies!). We cannot, however, make it a well of information for those unwilling to learn, though.

I would say marry me, but i’ll just give you a cookie.
