You're Not Zerker?! *kicks from party*
@Calamity
I get where you’re coming from. And I personally have no problem with the 1k to 2k AP people who a obviously new to the game as a whole and openly ask for advice. But when a 7k AP ranger joins the party and when asked doesn’t even have frost spirit unlocked (and apparently doesn’t have SP to do so) is where I draw a line. People will not change up their build because they can get away with it. Only when you are unable to complete it do you change or go write on the forums for nerfs.
On the note of improvising – imo following the meta WHEN PUGGING is the right thing to do. The group should not waste time to adapt to the one rifle warrior, LB ranger, staff guardian, p/p thief etc. It comes down to respecting the time of other so they respect yours. If one doesn’t want to build for a group he should not join it.
So many times I’ve been with friends and we’ve tried explaining something to someone and he just refuses to listen(no language barrier). Since we’ve done half the dungeon already we won’t kick him but after time we just started sorting these things at the entrance.
Then don’t complain when I join your no zerk, all levels, everyone welcome group and start kittening about the fact that no one is using zerker and we aren’t going through the dungeon fast enough.
You’re more than welcome to join. Have yet to meet any one on my “no zerk, all level, everyone welcome” group, that starts complaining about having no zerkers. In fact you’ll learn a thing or two about tolerance, patience and acceptance when you are in my group.
Probably because I know exactly what to expect if I were to join such lfg, and I want no part of it.
How is everyone welcome if you also specify no berserker in.your lfg?

I don’t think you understand me. I meant that, because you say we shouldn’t complain when someone doesn’t follow our LFG requirements, you shouldn’t either when someone joins your group and goes directly against your LFG requirements.
And by the by, I don’t think I need to learn anything about tolerance, patience and acceptance and I’m pretty sure I won’t either when joining one of your groups.
The problem isn’t the willingness to teach (not that I don’t think there’s something wrong with not wanting to teach; when is there ever the obligation to teach and educate someone unless it’s your job or like they’re your own children?) but newbies joining dungeons that require EXP runs only.
On top of that, what’s worse is that there’s now an avenue for people who are new to dungeons to seek appropriate mentors to learn about the dungeon.
You do realize that, these two statements are conflicting with each other?. How can you not have a problem with teaching and then go on to say it’s bad that there is a problem with a resource for where teaching is available?.

Again you are misunderstanding. He is saying that nobody has an obligation to teach anyone, and not everyone wants to run/teach newbies so they ask for EXP only but still getting newbies in their team, which is a problem. This is even worse because there is so much opportunity for newbies to learn or be taught by someone just by looking up a bit of info online.

And all who stood by and did nothing, who are they to criticize the sacrifices of others?

If you’re going to para-phrase, then phrase with context and understanding as I’ve stated this “There is something called constructive criticism. Give them that at the very least, so that they can get better”. Meaning in future should they turn up, they will be in a better position to meet your requirements.
Won’t lose any sleep that you didn’t join my group. If fact wouldn’t learn anything with you in my group. No matter how experienced you are.

That’s a nice concept but it doesn’t work in reality. When someone joins my group who doesn’t meet my requirements and I ask them why they joined I am either met with “i no english”, complete silence or something along the lines of “what does p1 mean?”. Now in the last case I could explain them what it means and that they might want to join more noob-friendly groups first, but in the first two cases there is nothing I can say or do to help these people, so all that is left is for me to kick them.

This is where the issues raises, which you guys aren’t understanding in my previous post. People learn at different pace, some will be faster than others. Some only learn through first hand, whilst others learn through reading. And I agree with you, not everyone wants to teach (as I’ve stated previously). And those that do teach, their standards might not be up to your own standards. As I’ve said, the player (the newbie) needs to understand where they are going wrong, they need to re-evaluate themselves.
Then you’re caught in a catch 22. You want experienced players, but then end up with newbies. But how can these newbies learn anything, if no one is willing to teach. It’s a vicious cycle. Where, resentment is thrown at the experienced dungeon runners on these forums. And where the experienced runners are getting frustrated at being resented at, and be constantly on the defense on these forums.
This might be a job for mr. Whisker. His prose is renowned for clarity.

Thank you for that. Ill need to add that on my signature when i get home from work, but before i do all any teaching runs or ill never get to adding it in :P
@VideoGamermike
At some point, the rational person will consider the following question:
Is the entire world crazy…or is it me?
This really will be my last post as I do want to answer a question given to me as it did legitimately aid in my understanding of this issue, and why I had such trouble comparing ideas for fighting(and why I didn’t see much math as useful).
Thats because….you can’t. You can’t compare one set of stats/gear to another, they are nothing alike in purpose or execution. The fact is, because of the different goals we can’t compare.
Take kyosuke, the character I brought up before. I actually brought him up incorrectly as he is more of a duelist style, using high armor to tank a lot of attacks, then picking the open point and ripping right in. In on fight, he gave up his mechs right arm, to stab a revolver through the opposing mechs head. He won, but it was only when he forced an using with his high armor, rather than going all-out. Translated to GW2, this style would focus on tanking hits until the point when the enemy is vulnerable(or at least finished with his special attacks), then striking at all hell with high precision damage. That is the goal.
This is where the difference comes in. If we compare that to a berserker build…it can’t be compared. One is centered around sheer killing power based on the derivative over time, while the other is based on both how much damage can be held(how much crunch power can be withheld,) as well as the amount of damage returned during that limited opening. As such, you can’t compare them because they very different goals, and thus, have different variables.
My issue with this berserker religion, is the idea that one is “better.” For some, sure, but for others, not. What’s important isn’t finding a single variable to any idea, but instead to identify what the goals of the build is, and how to bets meet that goal. So what would be judged as quality would be how effective a build is at the particular goal.
This means that beserker is not the best, only the best in getting as much damage as humanly possible, as fast as humanly possible. If the berserker build fits you, excellent! but I refuse to believe I am the only one who bases my strategy on the character, and wants to adapt and perfect each new style developed as a result of that character, each with their own goals and end results during a fight. I don’t want to play one build over and over, I want to enjoy the game over and over, each with a new strategy and technique. And I can’t be the only one who doesn’t just pick one style.
thank you to whoever asked that question, it was very insightful to answer and I feel helped me understand my goal in this game far better, thank you for that introspective look on myself.
focus on tanking hits until the point when the enemy is vulnerable(or at least finished with his special attacks), then striking at all hell with high precision damage. That is the goal.
There is no such thing in GW2.
I don’t want to play one build over and over, I want to enjoy the game over and over, each with a new strategy and technique
I run zerk gear but different traits, utilities, and even weapons on almost every fight throughout a dungeon run. This Apr 15 patch opened up more build diversity that you think. You are just not looking in the right place.

Funny thing about teaching is that I find most pugs to be wholly unreceptive to any criticism and/or wholly unprepared. I have gotten to the point where I have stopped helping now Im just kicking. The amount of heartache I get for simple suggestions..
“hey guardian can you slot wall of reflection?” silence
when dual ele’d + staff " hey ele shall I switch or will you switch to alt weapon set?" silence
“hey guardian I notice youre deep in honor. Can you slot pure of voice since youre 3 shouting?” No
“Hey ele umm youre not zerker(can tell at mounds p3 ac) can you stack might instead of dropping your bow?and confusing the players as to which one is the good one Expletive expletive elitist expletive elitist. Ignoring the lfg said " Zerkers pls exp not need p3"
Or simply below. He did nothing but press 1 (rifle) and drop rifle/net/flame turret.
I mean I suppose he was right, turrets are fine when you are being carried by an ele, a phalanx warrior, and another warrior who know how to also prestack might.(rare sight)
I mean I should have kicked him, my friend said kick him, but I didnt want to appear mean but he is just going to go into another dungeon and do the same thing.

I do believe a troll is being fed. As much logic you try use here it shall be over looked and replaced. I say we leave the troll under that bridge to starve…though, my lunch breaks have been more entertaining due to mr troll.
I miss the old fails thread, ever since they deleted it puglyfe stories just get scattered throughout the forum. :/
Also, pugs are just… bad. Pro tip: if you need a guardian, get a friend you trust, or play one yourself. Never ever trust pug guards, they’ll fubar everything. :>
“Memories are nice, but that’s all they are.”

DPS is not the only thing that matters in PvE, I really wish people would stop spreading this lie around.
Truth is, once an individual has attained a decent grip on the game’s mechanics, his profession and the dungeon at hand, DPS is the only thing that matters.

Actually, support is crucial and even worth giving up damage modifiers in some cases. I didn’t expect to have to tell you of all people that. The game being a dps race is just a myth perpetuated by bad players who don’t understand the work involved in achieving smooth runs since they don’t pay any attention to the skills people are using while stacked.

Depends on what you mean by support. If you mean boon-sharing, reflects and other active defenses, then I agree with you and that was included within having a grip on the game’s mechanics and are not linked to gear in any way, shape or form. However, if you meant healing and tanking damage with the face, then you’re incorrect, my friend.
Of course I mean active defenses, if I thought healing and tanking was worth doing I wouldn’t even be in the guild I am in.

That line of argument might work if we’re not in an internet era for a game that requires internet access. Information is cheap and not hard to come by, all it takes is a lil bit of effort for them to use some sense to use Google or official forum.
If they don’t make that kind of minimum effort, they don’t deserve anything. Go ahead and be a champion for these people.

So this is the “infamous” Videogamermike that was fore mentioned. One word to describe his entire post; waffle.

The frequency of requests for invites, while small compared to the player base as a whole, is still pretty high. We can’t teach everyone, and we will not, but we will teach those who reach out to us and ask for help. Everyone is welcome – even VideoGamermike, if only he would widen his view a little more.

I’d like to say that, no. He isnt.
I’m a nice person but even I, when faced with superior intellect, stopped arguing after a few posts. He would not be a good mentee for any of our mentors.

I merely pointed out a critical flaw in his statement. Discerning as to which is the correct info to use can be problematic for some (information overload). As I’ve already stated, some don’t frequent the dungeon board on the official forum.
I do agree that those that don’t make effort at all don’t deserve anything at all.
Go right ahead and be offended, if your sensibilities can’t take such criticism.

I am not the least bit offended, actually.
He did mention that this avenue for teaching those who want to learn about the dungeons is already stickied. Trust me, people here have tried to make this as visible and accessible as possible.
If you’re not happy with the way this channel is being publicized, please share some constructive ideas about how to improve this, instead of pointing out something obvious like how x method cannot reach out to everyone.
I, for one, don’t think mailing every single person in the game as a good way to publicize this. Unless you really think those gold sellers actually hit the jackpot?

Ever gone on the official GW2 Facebook page? If you ask there for a good guild a moderator will advise you come and look on the forums for a guild and gives you a link to the Looking For Guild thread…this means that ANYONE that uses just Facebook alone can find a way to get help. Those that actively make some slight form of effort will be rewarded…

“I am not the least bit offended, actually.” – why am I finding this hard to believe?.

Really?, you have a go at me for pointing out the obvious, but yet when he does the very same thing, it’s all handy dandy for him to do so. I suggest you read the next bit really carefully.
“Trust me, people here have tried to make this as visible and accessible as possible.” -
You expect me to trust you, but whenever one of your “respected” posters get criticized. A few of you will close rank. Makes it hard to gain any trust. Trust is earned, demanding it is not the answer.
“If you’re not happy with the way this channel is being publicized”
Sorry, but if anyone is exasperated or “unhappy” by all this. It would be users like you. As you stated yourself “people tried everything to make the stickies as accessible to everyone”. I’m just throwing my two cents here, – so it begs the question why would I be unhappy?.
“please share some constructive ideas about how to improve this”
I’ll bite. Has anyone considered: a separate website. Where all the tutors can put notes, videos etc. On to this website. Make it attractive as possible. Have the GW2 FB mods to link this up from their site. YT channel, clear HD videos. With each one, giving a basic tutorial on dungeons (yes I know your competing with other users that post the same thing) if all the tutors do this on one channel, it makes it more accessible. Visual presentation goes a long way. Have the websites url as your signature. Twitter etc. All this requires time and effort of course.
I’m sorry but if players are unwilling to go to the official forums what makes you think they’d be willing to go to a third party website
And all who stood by and did nothing, who are they to criticize the sacrifices of others?
Our blood has bought their lives.
Unlike the official forum, you have creative control over what content goes on. The presentation, layout etc. If you market it right then it might be worth a shot. High risk, high reward as it goes.

Well sure. High reward for lazy moth like pugs. If “oh shiny” is the only thing getting them to read what we have to offer I’m really not sure we can actually help them.
