Agreed. I play 1 or two hours a day if I’m lucky and I just did my dailies and worked on the festival achievements. Got just under 1k drinks, so yeah, 10 more days and I should be there.

I also like that not everyone will put in the time to get it. I don’t raid, so there are items I’ll miss out on, but this one I can earn, even with carpal tunnel and a busy schedule.

Could you please share how exactly you manage to get over 1000 gifts in 1-2 hours?

There are people already with the shoulders, of course it is doable. What it is not, is fun. Also, even if you somehow get into an instance for the JP, I highly doubt that anyone is doing 100 successful runs in two hours.

Remember, some people can’t even do the JP once. rolls eyes
I got my winter’s presence yesterday – because I found someone to do the JP for me – AND had enough of gold. I don’t expect the majority of players being that lucky.
And threads like yours are just another slap in the face in their eyes. I can perfectly understand everyone who’s upset about it.

How about this, lets see the CEO of NCSoft/Anet drink 10,000 drinks for the duration of the holiday event. If they can do it in life, then we have no reason to complain about it ‘in game’. Right?

Games should be more fun then in life right? I am sure they would find the visit to the ER ‘fun’, failing kidneys, soaked liver ‘Fun’ right? Just as much as we are finding out that farming out 10,000 items for the short duration of this holiday ‘fun’.

The direction Anet is going is simple; 3 Tiers, casual, semi-casual, hard-core. The effect shoulders are for the 3rd tier, hard-core player. Only those player types are going to get these items, and thats what Anet wants.

I personally only have an issue with the 10,000 drinks. Not cause of them being 10s each, or being a PITA to find via drops. Its because its only available for the duration of the holiday. Many of us do not have the time to devote to grind this out, and Anet is not being kind about it at all.

Well… personally I don’t like the fact that it is alcohol and the we even get a title for it. I mean… Really, being honored for DRINKING? Nah… xD
I know drinkers IRL and I’d rather slap them right into the face than to honor that, but after all it’s just a game, right? XD

The amusing part of it is, that Anet tries to create goldsinks over and over again, and then just comes up with something, that makes some people rich and even richer and others poor and even poorer, just to come about with new goldsinks after that? Where’s the logical point here? >.<

So please no, don’t change it!!!

As for the OP, just wait until next year when Anet will release all the old stuff to merchants you can buy for like 50 snowflakes and some karma. Last year I remember the Magnanimous Choir Bell had a pretty heavy grind to it. You had to own a clothing shop or something to purchase it. Now you can get it with like a mouse click. Ah, I should’ve been more detailed (my bad). I didn’t get 1000 drinks with gifts alone. I did the dailies, a bunch of festival achievements, JP, used dusty gifts from last year, bought gifts from vendor with karma, and bought some drinks/tonics on TP using 10g I got from a Silverwastes run. Nothing extreme and it won’t be like this every night, but long weekends will make up the time needed.

Sounds like nothing but a gold sink to me. Winter events should be a ‘gift’. Take a short look at RuneScape. Each winter’s day they added at least 1 new quest and new skins that you were able to receive by doing these quests. RuneScape isn’t(wasn’t?) the only MMO who did it this way. (I know, there were P2P only quests and skins sometimes… but the way of earning the skins was the same)

This is actually a good way to shift gold concentration in the community. Hardcore people sitting on a ton of gold just spent hundreds per person in order to knock the achievement out and that gold went into the pocket of casuals who just sell their stuff instead of hoarding.

That or people with tons of gold, bought the achievement and can spend spend the rest of the holiday acquiring more gold by selling items they collect they in the game, for inflated prices since they don’t have to do the grind. Meanwhile people who do have to try to do the grind lose out or send up spending what little they have saved up to make up the shortfall.

To claim that this shifts the gold, is demonstrating a total failure to understand how the economy actually works. It really is keeping the already rich, rich and the poor, poor. As previous poster pointed out, this thinking is a false, proven false and yet repeated anyway.

I did all the Other acheivements today and grinded out the jp for about an hour or two and got 1000 drinks done. This should take 10 days min if it’s done casually, maybe 20 if you only have an hour a day. No worries everyone

Is that your first one or two hours doing Wintersday achievements? Keep in mind that tomorrow you won’t have all the extra gifts from completing achievements, so you’ll only be limited to what you can grind from doing the activities.

You have 9,000 drinks left to go and the drinks have an 80% chance to drop (according to dulfy), so you’ll need around 11,250 more gifts in the remaining 12 days, which is roughly 938 gifts per day; at 10 gifts per completion, you’re looking at roughly 94 completions every day, which means you would have to average 1 minute 20 seconds per completion (not including loading time since the JP map closes every 20 minutes, so you’ll need to be faster than that) to fit within your claim of two hours.

A more realistic estimate would be 3~4 hours of grinding the JP every day, which sounds like a terrible way to spend the holiday, honestly.

Also when does winters day end? I’m hopping it lasts a month so I can miss a day of farming the drinks, but if not its still doable.

GW2 seasonal events normally last two weeks.

If the rich really did blow all their money up front to buy the achievement then they’ve obviously just sent tons of gold to the people selling the mats right off the bat instead of hoarding them or using them. That means that the poor/average/casual player was making bank immediately as patch dropped while the rich send money to them. Yes, the rich can then start selling too once the achievement is finished but everyone was else was making bank selling to the whales from the get-go.

I’m sure there are poor players out there who feel like spending every gold in their bank on booze is worth it but I have no doubt that a huge portion of average/casual playerbase doesn’t know or care about the 10k drinks. My guild is loving this event so far because everyone is selling, selling, selling and making gold hand over fist from the rich players who are quick to blow all their cash early in the festival while the prices are the highest. If all of the money is actually going to the rich here, how exactly is everyone else making so much gold?

Hah, kids these days complaining about 10k drinks which they can instantly buy on the TP at any time and then speed through them by consuming a stack at a time…

It’d be really funny to see these guys attempt the oldschool Incorrigible Ale-Hound title in GW1, where not only did you have to drink 10k drinks, but you actually had to stay drunk in-game for 10k real life minutes for it to count, and you had to spend 2 drinks to get drunk for the third to count towards the title. And the drinks were really hard to come by in the early years, too. They changed it though some years ago and now you can just spam the drinks so it’s only a lot of clicking.

And there are still no way to get achievement if you don’t farm enough money.

As a serious farmer who doesn’t really mind repetitive task: This is a grind (first time I say it).
You can buy the drinks/gifts from other players and you can spend all your karma and snowflakes on gifts, but it’s very unlikely that someone really is able to farm this if things stay like they are. Not speaking about the boredom of doing the same stuff without end for a few weeks.
The event is smartly designed: we flush out all stuff we got from the past years and only get consumables for it = no traces will be left from this wintersday. The downside: the usual thrill of opening gifts is “maybe I’ll finally get xyz”. Not the case this year.
One needs either the candy or drink achievement to complete the meta – so I guess I’ll aim at getting the candy and then call it a day.

ETA: One doesn’t need either to complete the meta, I didn’t see that my snowball mayhem achievement thingy was still unfinished. That’s good news for me actually as now I can relax and just play wintersday as I wish.

Yep, I got that GW1 title. People complained about_ it then too, both from a moral viewpoint and also from a “it’s too hard” viewpoint. In the meantime, a bunch of players enjoyed chasing the title and another bunch of players enjoyed having ready customers for the random booze that dropped at various times. It’s absolutely fine at 10K imo.

The moral standpoint is always amusing, given that we’re playing a game that basically involves killing anything that moves and taking stuff that does not belong to us. Right now in the game there will be a bunch of folk who are offended by alcohol but who are perfectly happy to repeatedly kick the poor little guys who are trying to steal the Dolyak presents.

Nice try, but 1 hr for 1000 drinks is greatly over-estimate, if not out-right exaggerating / lying.

Assuming you make PERFECT run, a minimum run for JP would be 2.5 mins. (This is including loading screen and opening the chest and returning to starting point)

Assuming there’s a margin of error you could screwed up some times due to RNG box explode or you misclicked, let’s average up the number to 3 mins per run.

Each run grants you exactly 10 presents, so an hr of JP will net you 200 presents.
Each present has around 85% chance of getting an alcohol drink, so 200 presents will give you around 170 alcohol points.

You’d need to do this JP AT LEAST 58.82 hrs, or 60~ hrs of JP to finish this.
Assuming the event lasts for 3 weeks, you’d need to do around 3~ hrs of JP EVERY SINGLE DAY to get this shoulder.
If you are going to vacation (and have no choice) during Wintersday for a week or so,
you’d only have 14 days to gather 12000 presents. You now need to do around 4.3 hrs of JP EVERY SINGLE DAY to get the shoulder.

Your statistic is completely off.
3~4 hrs of JP everyday is by no means casual.
Forcing you to do JP for 3~4 hrs everyday is beyond the definition of outrageous too.
I see no causality here.

It’s a Mad Mad world!…Of Tyria.

Here’s a thought. The 10k drinks should be on par with the other 9 parts of the collection.

So based on my experience (A Humble, mid to low skilled casual player):

I had most of the items for the Mystic Forge so I saved in Gold there, but you need 150 Mystic Coins and the Sigils + Runes might be exspensive. But hey, that’s three, done in 10-15 minutes.

What next?

Ah, the events!

JP x 3, took me 30 minutes of retrying, did not enjoy it.

Bell Choir x 3 songs, 4-6 minutes, got lucky, suck at these things and surprise, was not fun, won’t be doing it again.

Snowball Mayhem x 3 Victories, 6½ Hours, granted I am bad at PvP, but seriously, unlucky or ridiculous?

Toycapolypse, 30 waves (Acchiv says 50, but I only did 30, ah well), this was fun, not very rewarding, but fun, about 1 hour 10 minutes there.

And then the last item, 3 times watching a Dragon being bullied by a achievement-hunting horde of players. 1½ day due to me having a bad sleeping pattern.

So I got 9/9 in 1-2 days. Wait, are you telling me there’s 10?
No problems, it shouldn’t be so hard, considering the time and effort I put into the other 9.

10,000 Drinks. I got ~600 without farming, during the time I did the other 9.

This is not reasonable. Now, it still require you to put in a 100-150g without the drinks, but with them, it’s 1000g with current prices, if you buy them. So farm them?

Yes, because that is what this game is all about, farming things. And I got a time-limit on me! So I need to reach a quota every day, and compensate for days lost to me wanting to play other games, go on holiday events or doing anything else then play the game!

So here I am at 9/10, and the last step is more boring, time consuming and/or expensive then the other 9 combined, by far!

Put it down to 1000, so it’s on par (Or slightly above), to the other 9 ANet, stop being silly, please.

And I know, I don’t have to do this, but except the AP from the meta, there’s nothing else to gain from this Holiday Event, the Shoulders ARE the main event, it’s the only item on display which have any kind of credit to it. Be it only for your own satisfaction or if you are one of those people who like to flaunt your E-pen at others.

That’s my thought of this all. There’s nothing “Entitling” about wanting it to be reasonable on par with other requirements of the Collection, it just makes sense considering it got a time-restraint.

Fix this now.

Yea you do hard…. do hard to break your life and holiday without any enjoy.
Bro…it’s a game ok? not your work. It’s holiday festival ok? not festival working time.

Soooo… basically if you’re a casual gamer and/or have something more to do the coming days you’re not getting the shoulders… that’s great, well done Anet

(Looks at the requirements for the Nightfury shoulders)

You didn’t actually think that they would have this new Holiday shoulders easily available for the masses now, did you? So far that’s not what they’ve been doing.

They used to give-out those things from holiday more easily, by completing the Meta AP.

I got about drinks 1,000 the first day.

…it involved a LOT of 1-time bonus presents.

The Jump Puzzle and an internet connection I defy ANYONE ON EARTH to be able to overcome to do the little hopping and screaming run on is what’s going to block me out.

I wonder what your basis for comparison is…”

Only way to get it is to buy it with cash or play the game 10+ hrs a day for the rest of the month – still only a slim chance to get it – and have no real holiday out side the game

when ever i see some one with it i will think they are one of the 2 above

Remember, some people can’t even do the JP once. rolls eyes

If they can’t do it once why does it matter what the "perceieved cost * is? no amount of gold will allow them to buy their way past the other required piece.

If they can do it 3 times they can work to do it minimum 6 times in 30 mins for fastest present gain, if they cant do that they can do bells or eif they cant do either they can simply do toypocalypse

If you don’t put in the same amount of effort why should it even be considered that you recieve the same reward? This entitled generation

It’s an achievement which is available only during wintersday so U can’t do it pass this event. The achievement progress won’t be available anymore.

In reality, most people that manage the title in the festival will do it with a combination of all the methods. The presents drop like confetti from everything, there are free ones, there are ones you can buy with Karma, and you can buy presents or booze directly off the TP.

Yes, it will take a certain amount of dedication and gold but it’s definitely do-able in the three or so weeks we have and, you know, some things in the game are not meant to come easy.

But whatever you do, don’t ignore that Karma guy. An easy way to turn Karma into drinks or gold.

And dev is smart enough to make presents progressively more expensive after each expenditure, end up with 3.7k karma per one present for that day.

If all presents is a consistent 1000 karma, then it’d be much more reasonable.
(Although whether 10 mils karma for a shoulder is worth it or not is debatable)
