2014 most lackluster year for gw2
If Guild Wars 2 is really bumming you out, you can go get a console and play the FPS equivalent of GW2, which is just as pretty, has just as solid gameplay, is just as lackluster in everything else, has just as much grinding, just at much gameplay to lack of reward ratio, and just as much disappointment due to the endless promises of big stuff that’s always coming later! (/part sarcasm/joke, part truth, and part comparing Destiny to GW2)
In reality for a second, I have (almost) no complaints about Living Story season 2 so far. each release has actually had some pretty substantial content for the fact that its free. The biggest problem I have currently (And this is for living world, not the feature packs, of which I have many complaints) was that all of part one seemed like nothing more than a experiment in game design like what most of season one was. I’m kind of getting bored of the endless experiments, the endless need to reinvent the way the evolution of the game works, and the endless assurances of all these projects being worked on in the background, but no one is allowed to tell us what they are. Other than that,….GREAT!
if you think this year was bad, obviously you weren’t here last year
living story actually had. . . story.. the only downside was we lost dragon bash
game balance.. been here 2 years and have yet to see it so you can’t really say last years was better..Personally i enjoyed last year much more. There was constantly soemthing to do and
as soon as you got bored by the last update there was already the next in sight. Now in LS2 we got 4 !! total new updates in 5 months .. and personally i’m not
interested in playing these instanced storys with hordes of mobs but no loot
and endfights that take longer than a dungeon-run, more than once.So in the end we got Dry Top farming for 5 months.
Four months, assuming you don’t count other stuff like the WvW tournament, which some people do play and collections which some people do like as well.
Nope .. i’m a pureley open world PvE player .. so for me that i just as good as no content.
Also .. have these tournaments really any new content .. or is not just the same as before ? Like we make World-Boss tournement .. and somewhere runs a counter
that shows how often Boss X was killed .. or whatever ?

But where are ESO and WS, 2 most hyped MMOs in history that launched only couple of months ago?

But if it was so easy to make an MMO, those games wouldn’t have been disappointments. Maybe the lesson here is that it’s easy to say about bad a game is but it’s not so easy to make a good game.
why a gamer should care bout how easy or not easy it is to make a good game?

Aww, if #12 means its dreadfull, theres only few good games out there to play, i mean Skyrim, Civ 5…. …. … are SO DAM AWFUL
Dude. In first 10 you have some of the most succesful game in history.
GW2 being close to those in no universe spells what you wan it to spell.
And you are welcome to play any of those top 10 games, besides Minecraft i think all of those are pure crap

Oh yeah .. we must have had 1000s of great MMOs out there if it were so easy and all
of the wise people in the forums would start to make there own godly MMO ^^
Btw.: i was not interested in any of the hyped games in the last year beside EQNext
and even there i’m not sure what it will be in the end, and i don’t relly like their
character designs.
On the other hand i installed ArcheAge purely for testing out their character editor
but will never ever play it.

At least we have Halloween coming up soon. I heard they are feature packing it. Many players are too stupid to realise what Halloween is so they are going to put masks and costumes into the cash shop to help them learn. Upon purchase they become locked behind an artificial wall and unusable until you have 10 level 80’s!
The Mad King Maze has also received updates in the push to make things easier for the moronic playerbase. Anet has made exciting changes. Due to high player demand, the maze is now empty!
(edited by Paul.4081)
Expansion confirmed because Vayne says so!
…even if anet said recently otherwise…
They always said they will put in expansion worth of content…just not in traditional expansion format.
Hell, what other games call “expansions” these days, you already got more just in LS 2 ;P

Yep. A gamer shouldn’t care. Still missing my point.
I’m playing Guild Wars 2 for two years. Two years later, Guild Wars 2 is still in the top 20 in Raptr and the top ten in Overwolf. 2 years. Evidence they’ve made a good game, because if it were a bad game, we wouldn’t be in the top 20.
After all ESO and Wildstar are much newer and they’re not. Therefore the game must at least be good. Or why would people still be playing it. It may not be to everyone’s taste. That’s another story. But the odds are if it weren’t a good game, it wouldn’t be in the top 20.
Now it could be a better game, true. So can every game.

Haha .. its so funny for me to see how Wildstar was even before GW2 in July and is
already out in August in the Raptr list.
So yeah .. we need more hardcore content to save GW2 .. Wildstar is the best proof for that

this list is not top 20 games – its a top 20 played by raptr comunity (they even write this in the post – just scroll down a bit)
its same with overwolf – most games dont have a use for this and so its normal that games which have a strong supourt for this are high (and yes the api and how wvw works strongly supourts overwolf)

youll get as much HC content as is warranted (very little) in AAA MMO
you cannot expect better/“unique” rewards, if you like HC content doing it is intrisic reward

Overwolf’s support of Guild Wars 2 is rather new, but it’s been high on the Overwolf rankings for a long time.
I know it’s really hard to admit that a game you don’t like is doing well. But Guild Wars 2 is doing well. Not only from lists, but from financial reports. It’s meeting expectations, or we’d hear about it from stock companies.

I just want to point out that LAST year was the first year of the game. Of course there is going to be “MORE STUFF” in the first year. All the stuff they wanted but couldn’t get in at launch, etc. QoL fixes and updates stuff like that.
Also a lot of the first year “Rehash” as people call it happen in every game. They design certain events to happen yearly and without change. To me, there is nothing at all wrong with that. The first year it was all new and exciting because.. it was new. Bringing back an event is still content even if its not NEW content.
Also, we had a launch in another country a very big undertaking for any game. You either like it or you don’t. New content comes when it comes. Why are you so needy? How many hours have you put into the game that you’ve experienced everything? I have almost 3k hours and I’m not done with all the stuff I wanna do yet. Even further from all the stuff there actually IS to do.

I agree 100%. It’s absolutely pointless discussing something with someone who has made their mind up, despite all sorts of evidence.
Each person can make up their own mind.

Yeah .. but they have gotten it over long year from all those EQ-Clones and think now
think they have the right to get it or whatever because they are so much better than
the rest of the world .. just because they constantly play in groups of 24 people.
And also they never believe that they are just a minority ingame and just a vocal
majority on the forums .. and Wildstars success or fail is for me very interesting
as long as they still cater just for this type of players.

LMAO! People have been saying the game is dying from the first November. Five years from now, people will still be saying it. It’s always the same on every MMO forum. If you don’t like the game it’s dying. If you like the game it’s doing well.

That is the truth, my dear! I just wanted to make you laugh.
On a side note another MMO I play just celebrated it 6th year Anniversary and someone made a thread on its forums linking the very first “Game is dying” thread that was made a month after the game launched in the US. Then subsequently there was about 40 more posts linking similar threads that had been made throughout the years. It was a very amusing laugh I must day.
On Topic: I find that this year while “lacking” in quantity of update.. delivered supremely in quality of update and i will take that over anything else, tbh. Plus I loved some of the revamps they did to the “rehashed” content.

The op discussion was not if gw2 is a good game, we are all here because we think it is good. The discussion was that most devs at arenanet seems to have stopped working after the launch 2 years ago.

I dont think we played the same game. The game was advertised from the beggining to be focused on raids…so how focusing on raids could be the downfall? oO

Yeah .. left it mainly because of the dungeon/raid thing even since i really loved the big
World Events there .. but in the end you couldn’t even get level 50 armor from them,
and even better crafting receipes were only available from Dungeons.
That was the point when i decided to never again play an MMO with raid/gear progression and bought a life-time abo for Champions Online .. lol

Jan 21 – Apr 14: End of LS1
Apr 15: First Feature Pack
May 20th – Jun 30th: Festival of the Four Winds
Jul 1 – Aug 26+: LS2 Part 1
Sept 9: Feature Pack 2You really shouldn’t make up stuff that can be so easily disputed. 3 month breaks? 4 to 5 months between living story?
First off, I said new content, not rehashed content or features. So features packs nor rehashed festivals/holidays don’t count. The first feature pack was quite good, the 2nd was no doubt smaller.
He countered your argument and now you are redefining your argument so you are right and he is wrong. Sorry, that ship just doesn’t float.
It is NOT rehashed content also.
I don’t count updates to the ui a lackluster anything personally, even with the NPE they still managed to include two of the oldest suggestions in the archive of suggestions folder. I was as pleased with that as I was with their announcement that dungeons will not be the focus for future content. Imo it’s about time! These people crying for an expansion should really just sit back and get on board with requesting that more be taken from the archived suggestions folder to bring this game up to par, and that PVE balance prior to any new content, be the new focus so this game’s combat can function properly in diversity.
But you can’t really ignore the fact that LS2 is repeatable for all characters, including ones made after LS 2 started.
Yes you can. The content is barely worth doing once, and having to repeat it for achievements was tedious. It’s certainly not worth repeating on other toons.
Oh boy, lets run around and talk to a bunch of people at a dinner party in DR!! Such repeatable content so much wow.

Then why even play after making one character. You will be doing the same for the newer ones. Your argument has too much negative attitude to be valuable here.

i know you guys are in argument mode,
however i was thinking about this, and i think the main reason people replay certain things is
A) To experience it differently, with the new gameplay of a new class, or if things play out differently
B) When you really enjoy something, you may want to repeat it.
C) rewards or some benefit for doing so.
I dont think LS2 (most quests) offer much of a unique experience per class, or play out differently, so A isnt good, and C, well the rewards from what i saw were fairly unentertaining, as far as being unique, and not competing in terms of high gold value returned.
So, how replayable living story missions will be has the most to do with B )
for me, it wasnt so enjoyable i would do it again for joy, but i might do it again for like a refresher at some point.
Ideally, if they want something super repeatable, it would probably hit A, B, and C.

C) rewards or some benefit for doing so.I dont think LS2 (most quests) offer much of a unique experience per class, or play out differently, so A isnt good, and C, well the rewards from what i saw were fairly unentertaining, as far as being unique, and not competing in terms of high gold value returned.
So, how replayable living story missions will be has the most to do with B )
for me, it wasnt so enjoyable i would do it again for joy, but i might do it again for like a refresher at some point.Ideally, if they want something super repeatable, it would probably hit A, B, and C.
I find that doing the LS on different professions is quite different and you have to figure out how to do different things differently. Not so much the first run, but the achievements. I was trying to do On Swift Wings on my mesmer and I was having a world of problems. But I one-shotted it on my ranger.
actually, last thing they said, was we are not working on an expansion.
People who want to be optimistic say that that announcement was long ago, and MAYBE now they COULD be working on expansion.make no mistake, they have never said anything about an expansion, other than not right now, we are not working on it.
is it? cause at first thats what they were saying, then as vayne points out below was we’re working on content but havent decided if it will be released through the LS or an expansion.
Now the last thing I heard them say on the subject was an interview last month when they said We’re not talking about it.
I saw an interview at gamescon 2014 where they are actually asked about an expansion and replied specifically we’re not talking about it but alas i cant find it.
2nd best is this:
http://www.guildmag.com/guild-wars-2-interview-part-1-general-game-living-world/
the interview itself doesnt bring up the subject but in the intro to the interview they clearly state: “. Since the developers didn’t want to comment on any questions regarding a possible expansion”
Now none of this means they’re working on an expansion but it doesnt meant they’re not either. Thats all I am saying.
So GW2 is in an “awful” #12…..
But where are ESO and WS, 2 most hyped MMOs in history that launched only couple of months ago?
Aw, darn
the comparison with only kitten games dont work – cause GAMERS have the option and are not limited to games who are even worse than gw2
okey fair enough so how many mmos are there in that ranking with a higher rank then gw2? only two. is third place really that bad?
btw I honestly dont see raptr stats meaningful just pointing out if you want to consider them valid they;’re not really painting a bad picture anyway!
http://massively.joystiq.com/2014/09/16/raptr-shows-mmos-and-mobas-dominating-the-top-20-in-august
Looks like GW2 is way down to #12.
Can’t imagine why…for me i think #12 is still way to high
but when i see swotr is on #14 than #12 for gw2 is ok^^Gw2 is better than most mmos imo. Wow and eve online are the only mmos I find to be Better. Gw2 just lacks endgame, which is why I’m not a huge fan of it.
Swtor is pretty darn successful. It actually rake in a lot more money than gw2 does.
Your opinion is .. just your opinion I guess, just like everyone else has a "X"is the best or better than “Y”
Look I don’t care which MMO is flavour of the month.. if I enjoy playing what I am playing then that’s all that is important.. if not then there is choice to choose.
As for SWTOR… well I was there from the very, very start.. and yeah week 1 saw impressive sales.. then the heavy drop off began to happen.. every MMO has that initial spike, but numbers fell sharply for SWTOR as it was dogged with performance issues, bugs, unfinished content, feature lacking.. this list went on for many months.. fire fighting one week to the other… a huge IP was seriously let down by the game imo .. and then of course it became one of the largest IP’s to be reduced to F2P in a pretty spectacular short space of time.
However, I went back for a look at it about 3months ago.. still dogged by its jerky performance issues but quite a bit of new stuff and some nice features etc been added and an apparently decent F2P game had emerged from the flames. with one very glaring exception…. content wasn’t just gated it was made inaccessible.. even content that was there in game from the start, unless you re-subbed. You cant even received quest rewards etc unless you buy an upgrade from the Cartel market.
So bottom line, all MMO’s have their good points, their bad points and their.. indifferent issues… its one’s own opinion on how we see the game that really matters, not some league chart that will change every time some MMO launches or updates.
To note my favourite MMO isn’t even in the TOP20, but to me its got the best combat mechanics, best build diversity, multi-classing, a much better party grouping system, better business model, and in the last few years better expansion, better graphics, and its always had pretty stable performance, less buggy (bugs and exploited are hit on quick smart and there are meaningful actions on exploits unlike GW2 or SWTOR) in fact I actually prefer paying a 12 month sub upfront for it these days cos the value is superb… but its not in the top 20 so it must be crappy… maybe, just maybe as its been around as long as another 3 letter MMO its now found its niche, its desired market audience and is merrily going about making money still… almost 10years on.
It all comes down to opinion and conjecture.. some people spend so much time worrying and whining about a games loosing players, not being no.1 on this weeks charts.. than actually playing the game or finding one they actually enjoy playing not crying about.
So GW2 is in an “awful” #12…..

Well, to be fair……..Skyrim is pretty aweful without mods >_>
(not attacking your point, I agree with it ;P )
that is true 2014 was not good year at all.
that being said…look the life span of world of gw2 is 2 years. after that the core player(or veteran players) who are the most important players to any mmo already done the content of the game over and over and over again. have multiple legendary weapons, high rank wvw, high rank pvp,etc
anet better not continue such lackluster year in 2015 or they lose a lot of veteran players considering some pretty good mmos coming in 2015.
personally i am waiting for kuf 2.

There are always pretty good MMOs coming out though. You know,. ESO, Wildstar, Archage. They were all going to kill Guild Wars 2. I know. I read it here. It must be true.
We don’t know how well any MMO will do because everything looks great on paper. But talking about making an MMO is much easier than making one. So far, most MMOs leave a lot to be desired. I’m not sure that trend won’t continue.
… sigh …
Jan 21 – Apr 14: End of LS1
Apr 15: First Feature Pack
May 20th – Jun 30th: Festival of the Four Winds
Jul 1 – Aug 26+: LS2 Part 1
Sept 9: Feature Pack 2You really shouldn’t make up stuff that can be so easily disputed. 3 month breaks? 4 to 5 months between living story?
looool destroyed…!

why are you defending gw2 always without thinking that he might have point, you post a lot on different threads defending anet i have seen your name around for some time, stop being you know what it starts with F and end with Y.
did i say doom and gloom or i said it will loose players which is actually true.
Overall, I’m pretty happy with the changes made in 2014 so far.

Did I say anything untrue here? People say things like there are a lot of good MMOs coming out. Didn’t they say that last year too?
I’m telling it like it is. Fact. Until an MMO comes out, no one can tell how well it will be received. That’s not defending Anet. That’s common sense.
summary – i’m still waiting for a non-lackluster year from arena net
I believe that will happen when we get the developers hearing, or well reading, aid so the community says “We kinda want more dungeons and activities to do. Fixing your storytelling would be fine, too.” and they don’t go “WHAT WAS THAT? DID YOU MEAN COMPLETELY DESTROY THE TRAIT SYSTEM?!”
It feels like GW2 has an extremely small budget/development team and tries to focus on cheap but “big” changes. Unfortunately it seems the small dev team isn’t very good so we get nonsense like trait changes instead of solid good changes.
Think of it, the trait changes the recent NPE both are very simple from development perspective. They mostly locked content or removed it and what little they did add was super simplistic(entertain cows!). I wish we had a better idea of Arenanets financials to be sure.
What’s bothering me most is Diablo got an expansion, ESO got an expansion, Aion got an expansion, Rift got an expansion, EverQuest got an expansion, ArcheAge is getting an expansion, Wildstar is getting an expansion etc. What do we get? a couple of weeks in a new zone the size of a coat closet and a Feature Patch that breaks all kinda game play. To top it off about 80% were “features” no one asked for. Like all the nerfs. Again. As usual.
Moreover, lately we get a steady drop off of new items in the Gem Store. Add to all this ArenaNet only seems to pay lip service to providing players with some kinda roadmap for the future of the game. It kinda makes you feel as if all they’ve got up their sleeve is their arm. Pretty much all the talk we get from them is a form of “Smiling and Nodding”. You should go over to http://massively.joystiq.com/ to see Guild Wars 2 in perspective to other games and the companies supporting them.
Now, before you jump all over me with the banal “..but but Living Story” and “Why do you still play?” replies let me point out: that doesn’t answer the question.
Where are we and where are we headed?
(edited by MFoy.3284)
It’s true that MMO’s launch unfinished and have to finish the game live. Even with that, much smaller teams catch up and push new contents at same time, and do it better, faster and less buggy than gw2. Arenanet is a shame in the amount of development done since launch. The only other exemple I have that made so few content and work is warhammer online. They are a big team, so they have huge problems in their way of work.
I take it your referring to the problem where throwing people at a software project only makes it a more time consuming to produce. Something that is referred to in this book “The Mythical Man-Month: Essays on Software Engineering.” I feel that there is either a gross negligence in management (via communication with so many different teams) for how many people they have (close to 400 people now) at A-net, or the engine itself is terrible to work with.
A couple of things I keep in mind from time to time. One is Arena Net was founded by Jeff Strain, Patrick Wyatt, and Mike O’Brien. However as Guild Wars 2 was in development both Patrick and Jeff left the company. They both now work on the same projects (State of Decay: eventually turn it into an MMO zombie project) at Undead Labs The company also has other former Arena Net staff members as well. For instance James Phinney who used to be Arena Net’s Design Director. I believe it was Chris Whiteside who took over that position who is actually ironically enough is leading the CDI projects.
Two the engine itself is still a heavily modified version of the GW1 engine. However if the problem is truly the engine itself, then why can Josh Foreman get a project like SAB done almost by himself within a few months? Hence why he has been called away to so many different projects now (Triple Trouble and cleaning up Dry Top’s pre-launch design issues). I surprised they have not given him a higher position. Yet how long did it take to get the LFG tool into the game, or even the Trading Post to get completely refurbished?
Arena Net constantly tells us there are problems with the engine, but they get very cryptic about each one before they divulge into any real details. How many different alternative PvP modes received the boot because of design problems and why? Arena Net’s generic answer: “quite a few.” No reasoning beyond that? Arena Net: “they just did not work for our vision of PvP.” You know if communication is this bad for us, then how bad do you think it is internally?

why a gamer should care bout how easy or not easy it is to make a good game?
a gamer dont make the game he buy it and he play it and when game is not fun he delete it
its that simple
So can every game.
this list is not top 20 games – its a top 20 played by raptr comunity (they even write this in the post – just scroll down a bit)
its same with overwolf – most games dont have a use for this and so its normal that games which have a strong supourt for this are high (and yes the api and how wvw works strongly supourts overwolf)there are other sites out where you can get a feel whats played by ALL GAMERS and are not so biased
just go twitch and check the streams by streams/viewers and you get a feel what GAMERS play or care about
http://www.twitch.tv/directory
and scroll down – and for me this looks much more acuratbut anway – move on
Overwolf’s support of Guild Wars 2 is rather new, but it’s been high on the Overwolf rankings for a long time.
I know it’s really hard to admit that a game you don’t like is doing well. But Guild Wars 2 is doing well. Not only from lists, but from financial reports. It’s meeting expectations, or we’d hear about it from stock companies.
But, but Vayne! Didn’t you read that one thread that looked at NCSofts Financials that claimed 100million in a year was a sign the game was dying!? =O It’s Dying Vayne and there is nothing we can do about it.
We must hang up our White Knight Cloaks and Mourn the loss =(.
LMAO! People have been saying the game is dying from the first November. Five years from now, people will still be saying it. It’s always the same on every MMO forum. If you don’t like the game it’s dying. If you like the game it’s doing well.
The truth is usually somewhere in the middle.
I like the game ,but I admit it , I do believe it is dying. You thinking it’s not is the same thing, it may be true, it may be not, it won’t be proved. Probably you had a different experience than me in the last years. I started with my GW1 guild , died out months after release, but our numbers were pretty big. I’ve been in a few guilds since, lot of similar experience. Even in my new OccupySAB guild you can already see numerous people who didn’t log up since the incident. Also this is intresting to read :
On your previous comments on believing on something big is coming pretty soon…. I was like you last year, I still have some little hope left, but probably I’m gonna leave too as soon as they announce season three. My only hope is that before LS2 started we heard there are writers who didn’t work on it. But this, “doesn’t fit into the living story so we won’t add” and “living world is our top priority right now” doesn’t really keeps my hope up.
