But honestly, what’s going on at Arena Net?
How come Colin no longer posts here? How come he’s no longer attending these major events like Gamescon?
What happened to Looking Forward 2013 Blog Post which was made year ago?
What happened to regular skill updates?

All this makes me think that there’s just something quite “bad” going on at Arena Net.
Maybe they’re not doing great financially? Maybe NCsoft it taking too much money from GW2 and investing it in other products?

Maybe Colin doesn’t post here because he sees what a pointless task it is…or he’s busy with other projects, and has a lot on his plate.

Maybe people took everything in the blog as gospel even though it said clearly in the blog that it was all subject to change…oh wait that’s not a maybe. That’s a demonstrable fact.

The game is healthy because we’ve seen the quarterly reports and we know it’s healthy.

We know that NCsoft doesn’t really have many games to pull money towards. Lineage pays for itself. Wildstar isn’t nearly as popular as most people thought it would be (because raids are a very niche market), and Guild Wars 2 is going along just fine.

People expect more than is being delivered. I think most people expect too much.

If only they had stuck with what they knew, kept to the roots of the original Guild Wars Franchise.

They looked to far and too wide and are now lost in the timeless space of the Eternal Alchemy.

I should had warned them not to look. First Ceara (Scarlet), and now ArenaNet. Shame…

They could always invest in a few liaisons, some people with tough skin that can answer questions or address concerns. You know, some people that aren’t invested in design and development.

I think its funny they had time to make a long quest chain for an ascended backpiece in this LS that could of worked just as well with precursors.

some people speculated that this is a test run for recursor crafting.

Oh how I hope you are right.

Okay reality check. The people answering this interview are the end game guy and a WvW guy. They probably expected the interview to be about that.

These are the wrong guys for these specific questions. They might not even HAVE the answers and they tried to answer as best they could.

Well right. That’s my point. The whole interview screams, “We are way out of our comfort zone here. Halp.”

Now I feel bad for them, because the whole thing could have easily been them just plopped/ pseudo-strongarmed into an interview and then squirming through it without leaking data that they shouldn’t be.

My viewpoint depends on if they willingly decided to take a genuine shot at that interview and that was the result of careful preparation, or if it was more along the lines of them just doing it because the players say they don’t talk enough/they otherwise felt compelled to when they didn’t actually want to.

if the former, lol.

If the latter, aw… poor guys.

Well, if you were going to answer those questions, would you be sending your WvW lead and your end game specialist? Because those questions weren’t really focused on that.

Well, as we forgive the employees for being thrust into an interview they were not prepared for, let’s not forget that it DOES highlight a major problem Arena.net has… a very poor public front.

Who was responsible for putting these guys IN that spot to begin with? For while the uproar is starting to settle as rationality sets back in, this bursts of rage from the fanbase CAN be avoided to THIS degree if you as a company put the right face on things… which Arena.net (and a lot of game companies for that matter), frequently fails to do.

When it turns out the current back piece quest line is a test run for Precursor Crafting, your statement will be highly ironic…

Everyone of the OPs issue have been blown entirely out of proportion by this toxic community (mostly in THIS particular forum). Can’t believe the OP didn’t mention Mounts and Prestige armor for PvE players…..

Nice technique. Isn’t this from that same interview though?

There have been several interviews that were much more active than this one.

I’m hoping these newer ones are just due to people forced to talk about areas they do not work in.

Yeah, but the point is that no one is working in those areas so there really no one to get for those that would give a better answer. The answers read like a typical PR trained answers. I think people are sick of it already.

Edit: That line has been used in numerous interviews (possibly reworded sometimes). I’m sure you can google that line to see some examples.

I think first – players are unrealistic with their expectations and demands – yes demands. Trying to be a bully on a forum, to get what you want, is the wrong way to go about getting anything. It seems that is the norm for game forums now a days.

Second, people really need to stop READING into things stuff that isn’t there. Like the SAB aficionados. A.Net said it won’t be introduced during the LS2 part of the game. They didn’t say never. But, since SAB isn’t out WHEN THEY WANT IT, they are protesting and stomping their feet like 2 yr. olds. Sad – very sad.

Third, yes A.Net could be a little more forthcoming with information as long as players don’t jump on them or come to conclusions. Forum posters have been down right nasty to A.Net employees who do post information so I understand where they are coming from.

well.. thart partly because were waiting for a while now
Sab 1 and 2 were just a couple months between
then A FEW months later wouldve been 1.april aniversairy people already asking when its coming out and.. it didnt came out
noone ever talked to us about anythign regarding sab
and then almost one whole year after the release of sab2
we get to hear something like this…

anet coulve told us that muuuuuuch sooner

Why should they tell you? The recent interview said, it is not going to be released now. They did tell you. You didn’t like what they say, so you try to talk over them or put your fingers in your ears and say "LA LA LA – I can’t hear you!’.

They said it was temporary content. A.Net said they will put it back into the game sometime – they don’t have to tell you WHEN.

They don’t have to tell us anything? right, that certainly help anet’s reputation..

If there is one thing that REALLY irritates me about gamers, is this idea that they are somehow owed, or should expect transparency or a road map. Gamers continue to push this narrative that they are somehow in a “relationship” or a “partnership” with the games and the developers.

You. Are. Not.

You are nothing more than a CUSTOMER. Period. One of millions of people. You are owed nothing but the product you purchased, a product you have been given for the money that has been exchanged. Anything you get beyond that is merely an added bonus.

Get it through your skulls. They do NOT have to listen to you. They do NOT have to do what you request. While it may certainly be a good idea to keep an ear on what your customers are saying, they are under ZERO obligation to comply to anything you say.

If you absolutely cannot accept the policies of a company, if you honestly think they are not listening to your wants and are actively ignoring you, you walk away and stop supporting that company.

THAT is your power. Nothing more.

Sure it would be nice to hear a bit more about what is going on behind the scenes, but the virtual lynch mob in this thread is exactly WHY they choose not to and as a reasonable, logical adult, I understand this choice completely.

No one is asking them to fulfill the communities request (I’m not at least lol)… we just want to know what on earth are they doing???

“We hear the players’ concerns. It’s currently on the radar, and we’ve been experimenting with several solutions, but we can’t really talk about it.”
Tune in for the next Ready Up tomorrow – where we talk about that other thing that we can’t really talk much about.
We also have new skins in the gemstore and updated tooltips even more."

That’s anet communication in a nutshell. Thats apparently an OK form of communication to some ppl on this forum….

What on earth is the point of even doing a kitten interview if every answer is “idk, can’t talk about it”

Forum posters have been down right nasty to A.Net employees who do post information so I understand where they are coming from.

and then almost one whole year after the release of sab2
we get to hear something like this…

anet coulve told us that muuuuuuch sooner

Why should they tell you? The recent interview said, it is not going to be released now. They did tell you. You didn’t like what they say, so you try to talk over them or put your fingers in your ears and say "LA LA LA – I can’t hear you!’.

They said it was temporary content. A.Net said they will put it back into the game sometime – they don’t have to tell you WHEN.

What kind of backwards kitten company doesn’t tell its community about what it is planning, even if they have the “subject to change” at the bottom of their plans.
They don’t have to tell us anything? right, that certainly help anet’s reputation..

I can’t believe people actual defend anet’s communication and PR agenda lol… so many white knights here that think anet can literally do no wrong and everything they have done is perfect, without fault.

In the interview, they told you exactly what they wanted to. No more. no less. They gave us information and now people are complaining because it is not enough. What do you want, to be involved in the actual design of the game? Sorry – I leave that to the professionals.

Companies like blizzard actual routinely update their customers with constant road maps of what they are working on…Not seeing that much here with anet and yes, I realize they don’t have to tell us anything but its obviously in their best interest…MAJORITY of the ppl love to hear what their game is planning on doing in the future, there always will be bad eggs in the community that outrage at every little update, who the heck cares? its a minority. You. Are. Neither.

(Unless you actually do have shares in NCSoft that I am unaware of, in which case I would wonder why you aren’t calling up your broker for information…)

Anything they provide outside of that digital license or physical disc is a courtesy, and players really need to start treating it as such. You have gotten what you have paid for. You deserve, and are owed, nothing else.

I am going to say this. Games are about entertainment. One playes games for entertainment value. If I am not entertained then I stop playing them. People are reacting to games like they would to a job. That is your problem, not A.Net’s – they wrote this game to entertain us.

Why should A.Net care how much time and energy you put into the game? You were entertained weren’t you? Their job is done, if you have. Anything more on your point is ‘Entitled" and you aren’t ‘Entitled’ to jack.

No, most of just want to know where the game design is going, not be involved in it…

If they have 350 employees, and only 20 are working on the LS at one time, what is everyone else doing? Are the rest working on something like an expansion in the background and keeping it secret? I seriously doubt 300 people are working on the feature patches.
I mean, they’re not working on SAB, precursor crafting, or essentially anything people have asked for as far as we know. So what exactly are they working on? If the answer to this question is only this feature patch and the LS we just got, then I think that’s a huge problem.

With all due respect, it is much more than “we just want to know what they are doing.” These are demands filled with rudeness and disrespect. They border on the fanatic and hateful.

The title of this thread is a perfect example “Anet is out of touch”. That isn’t wanting to know what is going on, it is making judgments about a company and people, when they do not truly know what is happening with their process and timelines and goals, etc., etc., etc.

As far as the interviews go, they tell us what they can and if they can’t what do you want them to say other than “We cannot talk about that right now?” Do you just want them to stare blankly and not give a reply. Honestly when they do share something they are picked apart for whatever they say. If I was one of those employees, every word out of my mouth would be “I cannot talk about that right now.” No matter what they say, they get battered and bruised.

I’m not white knighting, I just am observant. IMO, a large majority on these forum are hateful and self-entitled. I often find it a sad commentary on people in general. Those people at Anet must have stainless steel skins to put up with the comments here.

And you can just as easily rethink that commitment when a patch drops that throws open world PvP into the game.

Players really like to embrace this delusion (because that’s what it really is) that if they know what is in the pipeline, that they can save the developer from making a horrible, game-breaking mistake. They want to believe they can save a game from itself IF WE WOULD JUST KNOW WHAT’S COMING!

It doesn’t work that way. If a developer decides [x] is something that the game must have to achieve [y], there is next to nothing player feedback can do to change their mind. In GW2’s case, I can think of ONE time that a player revolt actually got Arena.net to do a 180 (the Flamekissed light armor set), and even that was centered around something cosmetic.

If Arena.net decided open-world PvP was something the game needed to expand its audience, the players could set this forum literally on fire, and it wouldn’t matter. Having access to the “roadmap” wouldn’t help players at all, they’ve just convinced themselves it would because it makes them feel important.

Actually, one of the things they said they are working on is better communication with the players. So i guess for anyone to expect they do that is silly.

This is a product dependent on continued sales and some of these folks actually support the game through those sales. But, if we don’t get a good sense of where things are headed, it’s less likely we will continue to support it (that would be a general “we”). This isn’t like buying a toaster…

As a continued supporter of the game, i can certainly expect some idea about it’s future so i can make an informed decision on whether i want to continue supporting it today.

Think of it this way, if my favorite Thai restaurant decided to change it’s menu to French cuisine type of thing. I’d certainly want to know that so i could find a new place for Thai food.

Reading this interview kinda irked me. While it’s obvious that game designers have to put certain restrictions in place, ANet’s tone is borderline dictatorial — even when it comes to the most basic things that are given in any other MMO, such as field of view, top-down camera angle, first person PoV and so forth, they’re just like “We know what’s best for YOU”

Well no, you obviously and evidently do not.

ANet has this weird obsession with controlling everything, and a lot of that does not make any sense at all. I mean they managed to completely contradict themselves in the same interview.

Also I don’t care how much time and effort they put into designing things so they look good “up close”, 99% of the gear in this game still looks like poop.

I’d love to know that as well. There’s this list of things Colin said would happen and here we are 2 years later just like at launch wondering what’s going on. Once again silence. Once again nothing planned on the things we were told would come through. Even the balance team hasn’t touched on these things.

All I’ve gotta say to these people who still seem to be in the dark and are loyalists is this. If the balance list in the new feature patch has nothing nothing of what you and the rest of your fellow class players are asking for for months in your class forums, there’s something wrong. Seriously, when months of posts about the same issues over and over again in the class forums are ignored surely you can’t gush about gw2 about that. Seriously. There comes a point when reality must take over and you have to accept it and help get their attention to find out what’s happened/happening.

I’m tired of the same old business model from game developers when will you be?

That’s a good point. It might very well be in ANet’s best interest to promote more transparency. However, “in their best interest” does not mean they are required to do so. In the end, no matter how reasonable our requests for information seem to us, our only power is to refrain from spending. My stance toward GW2 now is that I play it when I feel like it, and don’t spend money anymore because I believe that ANet does not want to provide what I want to see. I have no rancor towards them for it, but see no reason to support the company any more than I already have.

I think players are the ones that are turly out of tuch they want every thing with not waiting time they want loot to be thow at them for free and it still have meaning they want things to look good but want to see every detail even the bad ones and some how to keep things running at a high FPS. I think gamers over all when looking at the past year of new games and old games have no ideal what they truly want and are only able to complain about things they do not want that and have no real ideal what it means to want one thing vs another.

I too want to live forever yet always find things to never get old. I can ask for the world and expedited the universe but at the end of the day i will be disappointing.

The issue isn’t that it wouldn’t be a good idea to be more open. It absolutely would. But they are under no obligation to.

The issue is the player entitlement. “They NEED to talk to us!” No. They don’t. This ISN’T a partnership (or a marriage as I heard one player describe it some time ago). You’re just a guy who dropped $60 on a game, a game that you have. Transaction complete. Or someone who spent $ on gems and bought an outfit or weapon skin. Transaction complete.

Anything you get beyond that is a courtesy, and should be received as such. Screaming at them because they won’t be transparent is 100% wrong. Claiming they are lazy, don’t care, aren’t listening, etc… because they won’t give you the roadmap to their future plans is 100% wrong.

Is it good business sense if they clam up and say nothing? No, and I’ve said multiple times Arena.net’s PR and communication is terrible. But they do NOT owe it to you. If you cannot accept that policy, your power is to not support them.

That, and let other people know that you don’t think the game is worth spending on. You know, those people who have yet to purchase the box for the first time and are considering if they should play the game. I would certainly think twice about buying a game if its players started getting vocal about negative experiences with it.

They could always invest in a few liaisons, some people with tough skin that can answer questions or address concerns. You know, some people that aren’t invested in design and development.

This is exactly what I meant when I said they need someone in Gaile’s old position. Since they bothered to make official forums this time around and keep getting people pestering them for interviews, it makes no sense NOT to have a dedicated liaison.

It’s hard to do jumping puzzles with a big, fuzzy butt.

I mean, it’s alright to have delays, and changes in plans, but they could at least explain why.
They most certainly don’t have to do that, but if they don’t communicate at all there will be quite a bit of people disappointed and asking for questions.

On the one hand, I agree with you completely; we are entitled to nothing and short of an organized mass exodus from a game, we really have no way to impact their bottom line.

On the other hand, I think games have a special kind of relationship between player and developer because of the way they are constructed; with MMOs in particular, they are updated and changed to improve them, and often the active community gets some feature requests fulfilled somewhere along the line.

The reason this makes sense is that games are a highly subjective product; they aren’t like cars, for example, where certain kinds of objective functionality are going to be highly desired no matter what. Games can be a lot of different things for a lot of different people, so to a certain extent, the manufacturers have to be in touch with the customers, or else they are slinging colors at a canvas at random.

Granted, some of that “in touch” can be through metrics and that’s where the whole “we’re going to change the game by providing feedback” mentality goes sailing out the window and crashes into the nearest telephone pole. But I think it’s healthy for these companies to be “in touch” in a personable way because, quite frankly, when they are, they’re already 2 steps ahead of half the industry. And that endears them to players very quickly.

So yes, they don’t have to do kitten when it comes to communication. And maybe it won’t mean a thing for their profit margin because the other options out right now are comparatively poor for a lot of people. But the opposite – having good communication – will yield positive results. I can pretty much guarantee that.

It’s just a question of, “Are they willing to spend the extra time to get those positive results?”

Or words to that effect.
