$50 is fair for an expansion, what I have an issue with is not having a character slot with it.
They are adding 9 elite specializations and 1 new profession. 20% of the profession based features are the REVENANT.
Not having a character slot with the purchase means, in order for me to have a Revenant when HoT launches:
- I need an already empty character slot, or
- Buy a new character slot for $10, or
- Delete an old character slot (but they’re adding this horizontal progression system to the game, so players don’t have to delete pre-existing characters)
Anet, “Buy our game, disclaimer: you won’t actually have access to all of the features we’re hyping you for unless you shell out more money”
I understand your point i have currently a few characters :
2Thieves
1Mesmer
1Guardian
1Elementarist
1Warrior
1Free SlotBut i always made some gold or bought gems so that i could always have a free character slot. But not everyone has so many charachters and you do need an extra slot i think you sould think about buying the Deluxe Edition. Or just buy the standard and the charachter slot.
Dude, I have 12 characters, all at level 80. I just deleted one to make room for Revenant. Do you know how crappy that feels? It was a character I had the least amount of time on but it was the character I did the entire trait system with, so there were some feels when I got rid of him. I’m still adamant that $50 should warrant a character slot, that just doesn’t fit right with me still. And I’m not going to shell out $25 extra dollars for a character slot when its only $10 on its own, all the other features in the Deluxe just don’t appeal to me other than that extra slot.
I know how it feels to delete a charachter mine are also lvl 80, and i think it would be really good if we get a free char slot but that’s not gonna happen for us m8 so we have to either delete one char or dish out the cash or grind gold
btw what charachters do you have?

Yes, I will sell my current account on ebay, legendaries and all.
Then buy HoT because, hey, I get the core game free. The advantage of being a newbie right?

No they didn’t, they said it needed the base game to play. Which is true. Only now they add the base game to the expansion.
So it’s not lying, just goading people into buying the core game beforehand so they can charge them twice. It’s very shady, but not a lie.

The sad part is they probably thought this was terribly clever/sneaky.

This is the only reasonable “controversy” I see in regards to the new expansion. That being that when they started releasing information about HoT it was implied that it the base game would be separate. So those who bought Gw2 AFTER they announced HoT should get reduced cost or a off setting bonus.
They’re already doing that.

It did seem fair until I saw 25% markup penalty because I’m from the best country in the world.

This is GW2, we expect more, we are not receiving that.
Except that we can’t actually prove or disprove this claim in any way…. How much story content will there be at launch? What is the depth and amount of the “challenging group content”? How many maps will we have added total? How many unique events or mechanics will HoT add? Guild Halls alone are content that nothing like any previous content.
You know what CoD is like, and make a shallow comparison based on incomplete facts about HoT. The way I see it we are getting way more than CoD gets as DLC for one of their iterations already. You can’t compare maps in a shooter to GW2 maps at all.
Yes and they have opened pre-orders for the game, why? It’s one big fat no from me at the moment.
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: NEOCROM.8957
I have a very hard time to reach a conclusion if you are a troll with the title or you are serious. 50$ fair for a map and few other contents? The ENTIRE core game at 50$ has 10 times more content than HoT. If HoT was like 20$, then yes, it was worth and a price set with common sense.
This isn’t a troll post this is my sincere opinion that HoT is worth 50$ if you take into consideration that you will get the following
-Guild Halls
-New Borderlands
-New Elite spec although i’m a bit sad that the thief was not revelead yet.
-1 new Region which i think will be 5 maps with various size. But that is your opinion i repsect that.
At least tell your opinion with stronger facts on your side. You think those 4 things worth 50$? i mean lol, the core game it’s 50$ and has way more things than HoT has. So no, it’s not worth 50$, 20-25$ yes, but not 50$ for a region that is not even 1/4 compared to entire Tyria.
As Randall said, fair for a new player, not for a player that bought the game already, or for ppl who bought the game 1 month ago for example.

The price is fair if you’re a new player.
Not even a character slot for $50 is insulting veteran players, who will need to spent more to be able to try new class.
Shadowly changing the FAQ to remove the “you’ll need core to play HoT” to a “core is included!” may even be illegal, they lied people who bought the game since the FAQ appeared until now.
Totally agree with you m8. If I were arenanet I would add some gifts for the accounts that bought their copy since the FaQ apeared.

Anet doesn’t care about the money they already made, but about the money they want/will make. A player should think different, why exactly?
What?
Let me put it differently:
Giving free GW2 with a copy of HoT means Anet (or whoever made that decision) thinks GW2 is now worthless (or at least, that’s how you can interpret it). Now then, since the time I spent playing core GW2 is gone and in the past, i don’t really care about it. In that case, players and management think alike.

Would pay 44€ for a good chunk of contents, which sadly, I don’t see on this ‘’features pack’’ in disguise.
So yeah, dear Anet, try again….

Decided to support the game before it was even out and bought the heroic edition just to find out month later you added more bonuses to this version. Its funny how when ever I get to the BLTC it still offers me the option to upgrade to a version I have already payed for. Still this was not a killer for me cause I feel I got way more than my moneys worth.
Now HoTs is being sold for 50 which I dont really have a problem with but you are adding the core game with it?? List of problems with this:
1- People that already own the game feel as they are being charged twice
2- People who already own the game arent getting anything for free unlike new player
3- People who bought the game because of HoTs feel robbed cause you clearly stated that the expansion would not come with the game
4- Once again theres a post stating that the expansion would come with a character slot and even tho this is true its only being added to the heroic edition…. Not only that but GW1 expansions came with 2 new slots
All Im trying to say is that I feel dumb for supporting your game when Im constantly being screwed over, not once have I felt rewarded for supporting the game early, all the benefits go towards the new customers.
It would be really nice to feel appreciated.

This is different man, but you still can, and don’t compare this to other games, because in here you can buy everything with money exactly since the gear isn’t so complicated to get. Go try Aion, put 500 euros in your bank account and let me see what you can do with it within the ingame shop, nothing except buying a ready account from someone from some site. You can actually buy currency in here or you forgot about it? Just because you think you did something special everyone farm’s for stuff, but this doesn’t change the overall picture.

There just needs to be more options available. Having options won’t detract from this. The current 3 packages are fine and encourages new players into the game. However, all of these issues could have been avoided if there were options available for those that already own the core game and want only the expansion.
The price has some flexibility, but overall, more options are better. For the consumers, the fans, and the people at ArenaNet, the extra time and effort to add these additional options would be well worth it.
My 2 cents. Cheers.

they will start with the discount of 20%…
this has nothing to do about being cheap or what not. I have over 300 games on a steam and over 50 games outside of steam, i have no problem spending money on games as gaming and collecting is my hobby.
But this, this feels like a slap and rip off of loyal supporters and veterans. I feel like my support is not appreciated… And that is bad marketing

The core game comes free for new players. So you dont rebuy anything. Whats the problem. It builds a larger community. The game is 3 years old now, didnt you get more than enough gameplay for your money? I dont see the problem. 45 euros (or 50 dollars) is a decent price for a big online world. Or would you rather have lower expac price + subscription costs? Or a free to play scheme like all those other third rate games out there? The game doesnt run on air does it? There are substancial cost with everything what comes with running such an online world. I welcome this because it brings in a fresh batch of new players.
Big online world you say… right. But so far, all we KNOW of HoT is that it gives us a grind for precursors, guild halls, a new class, elite skills and (so far) ONE new zone.
No, games don’t run on air and goodwill. But there is such a thing as value for money.
(And incidentally: I personally DO prefer games with a subscription and regular free updates. GW/2 is/was my one exception)

it is far too expensive. A double in my mind. Why do we need to play the price even higher than the new player. So it become 4 times expensive than I can accept. May be Anet want to replace old player to new player. New player always need to spend a lot and lack of ability to earn gold. It is my time to try other MMO.

Really, is the place to go there?
Aside from that little bit extra we pay for a game we also hand in a huge amount of our salary for those wonderful benefits. Seriously, what does this have to do with anything?
What I asked was simply “Why do we pay more for a couple of in-game trinkets like a minipet and decorations and a character slot, compared to the US”. Can you tell my why, instead of judging our social welfare?
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

We pay extra for everything in EU because EU rules make everything more expensive- endless piles of rules and regulations on everything, as well as endless piles of civil servants all shuffling papers back and forth and needing to be paid, hence why taxes are high, governments spend too much and we end up paying more and more in debt interest every year which then needs to be paid with more taxes.

Reread what I said. It states that it is indeed the same value since Anet is giving away the Core game for $10, where that is the price of a new character slot. Tow bundles aimed at two different types of people. I fully believe in supporting additional content. I do not believe in screwing over Veteran Players over something as trivial as not having a couple additional bundles.
I have no use for an extra character slot however. Already have one reserved for trying out revenant, and I could easily clear out a second one any time.
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: Acharyn.4738
To clarify: $50 is the price of the expansion. We included the core game as a free bonus to make it easier for new players to get into it.
By the same logic, veteran players should get a free copy of HoT to make it easier to get into it.

A: Yes. Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns is an expansion to Guild Wars 2 and not a stand-alone campaign, and therefore it requires the base game to play.
google webcache does not lie!!
Thanks for screwing over other people that already bought the core game based on this statement.

Certainly feels like a slap on the face with continual support and update for a game I have put 3000 hours into, enjoyed and only needed to buy once. Hell they even handed out season 2 for free and continually added new living stories/ dungeons to the game. I feel so ripped off for not receiving something for free and having to pay $50 for the expansion like everyone else.

I thought the price would be something like 35€ at most, but 50€ means they are making you pay the core game twice without telling you. I’m waiting until it’s on sale, this summer sale thickened my game library on Steam, GoG and Origin. Anyway, whoever made the expansion pricing decision and those that are ok with it really disappointed me.

Anet sold me vanilla GW2 almost 3 years ago.
Last I checked it is the same company that is developing and selling HoT.
I’ve gotten more value for money from GW2 than any game I have ever played so I believe that my $50 ($100) is going to go a long way. They have earned that trust.
I pre ordered and I can’t wait.

Ok, how about because the game is several times more expensive to produce for the European market because of the multiple language support? Or maybe winding their way through the byzantine business code of 14 countries means they have to keep a lot of extra lawyers on hand?

Giving free GW2 with a copy of HoT means Anet (or whoever made that decision) thinks GW2 is now worthless (or at least, that’s how you can interpret it).
No, ANet thinks, that way they will attract more new players.
1 copy = easier to buy
cheaper = more will buy it
So f.e. if 100.000 new player would have bought it for 10€ core + 45€addon =5.500.000
Now if 123.000 new player buy it for the 45€ in combination => 5.535.000
+ bigger chance, that some of those 23.000 players will spent more money in the long run (through buying gems).
For us players: more new player to play with = more fun!
We both win!

(And incidentally: I personally DO prefer games with a subscription and regular free updates. GW/2 is/was my one exception)
Then you would understand how the price vs value is inflated due to lack of sub, p2w, gear/content grind to compensate.

It’s always the way. Although I don’t consider myself part of Europe (another argument for another place), we’ll always get charged more; it was the same for the last MMO I played for ages. Plus, of course, in this country tax is actually like being robbed by our own government.

I really like GW2 and have been a fan of the GW franchise for a long time, but from time to time they use marketing tactics that simply put: stink. And this to me is one of those times. Don’t get me wrong, I WILL be getting the pre-purchase because I enjoy the game a lot, but I think this kind of marketing tactic is unfair on existing players.
I have no problem with them bundling the core game with HoT. It makes sense to do this. But I also think they need to make things more fair for players who have already purchased the core game. We have paid Anet money for the core game, so why can we not make some use of this supposedly free gift? We have given Anet more money then the new players purchasing HoT, so why do we get less?
I can only think of three solutions to this so far (one of which has already been mentioned here):
1) Offer customers, who have already purchased the core game, a free character slot. At least that way then, they do not need to spend more money to get an extra slot or delete an existing character to play the revenant.
2) Allow existing core game owners to gift their ‘free’ copy of the core game out to a friend, or to use as a second account. A gift is no gift at all if we cannot make any use of it. If we, or a friend, can make some use of our gift that would at least be something.
3) (the best option in my opinion) Offer a reduced price upgrade option for those who have already given Anet money for the core game. I am not suggesting a big discount. Something like $40 would be better than $50, and would at least allow us to purchase an extra char slot.
I hope Anet considers the player feedback here, because this is not a fair practice in my opinion.
I also think we need to stop using the word free. Anet can use it all they like, but all it is is a marketing ploy. It is not free. There is no such thing as a free lunch. The price you pay includes everything in the bundle. End of story. They can call a part of it free until the cows come home, but it doesn’t change the fact that you pay $50 and get the core game as part of the bundle. Therefore, EVERYONE who pays that price should be able to make use of every item in the bundle.

Its getting out of point now so I will not get into detail, dont want to derail the topic. Suffice it to say Social benefits are finance through direct and indirect taxation. So yes Vat isnt the only way social benefits are financed its just one way.
I told you why because those trinkets are being sold to you and thus subject to VAT just like anything else.
