Is there any future chance of being able to reroll your character’s race and profession as a gem service? I have bounced in and out of playing the game since launch but now playing steadily. However, I am now unhappy with several of the race/profession choices I made back around launch and would like to change them, but would rather not have to regrind 5 classes back to 80 as well as most of my crafting professions, mapping, and birthdays.

I can understand some of the hesitation in doing this (namely personal story) but with certain restrictions on the service such as: must be level 80, completed personal story, completed the personal story of the race you want to switch to (all the way to finishing Zhaitan) and/or others. You could then be given a simple multiple choice menu to select the new personal story path you “took” sans rewards and all skills you unlocked would be refunded as skill points (so not to gain an advantage in the Mastery system in HoT).

Doubtful- pretty sure that the devs have said that such a thing would be next to impossible because such things are hard coded in the game.

My advice is to just reroll now if you want that particular race/class combo. I’m sure you will reach 80 on your reroll toon before such a feature exists.

Race is connected to the personal story; it would take a huge amount of code changes to dis-entangle them, so I don’t see that as likely. For ANet: a lot of work, good chance of bugs that they won’t be able to predict, and very little upside for them.

Professions are not as important to the story, but they are tied into leveling and story rewards as well as some skin unlocks. On the fact, that seems relatively easy to handle. But again, QA isn’t likely to catch all the complex interactions between various mechanics, so it would probably also require a lot of dev/qa time, introduce weird bugs, and, again, there isn’t much advantage to ANet (or the vast majority of players).

tl;dr ANet could do it, but I can’t see why they would want to: the costs vastly outweigh the benefits.

Reaching 80 isn’t as much of the problem of then redoing all the map completion, crafting etc.
Seems kind of silly to hardcode that data into the game. But even then it should be easy to change the variables that display your personal story since you don’t have to actually replay any of it (if you use the level 80 idea I posted).

Although even just allowing a profession change would work for 3 of my characters

Torn between buying character slots/renaming vs flat rerolling and losing my birthday stuff since I am a bit of a collector as well.

Illconceived Was Na also brings up some pretty good points.

There was a post a while back with a load of links from devs saying that race reroll won’t really happen.. does some digging. Found it:

ANet so far has said no.

Race changes:
1) I am afraid that the team does contemplate different possibilities and new features for the future but this one is not among those. Source
2) There are a lot of far-reaching consequences of allowing one character to play through every race’s personal story or equip any cultural armor/weapons. For now, we feel that it would take away from the experience of Guild Wars 2 for the majority of players. Source
3) Thanks for asking. To change the race in the Gem store will not be an option in Guild Wars 2. Source

kitten =/ Oh well there goes some money for some char slots and name change tickets. Thanks for digging for that post, I got burned out on forums about a decade ago so don’t visit them much.

That’s what I’ve been doing. It’s not as “elegant,” but gets the job done.

PS consider the identify repair kit: 1,000 gems for a name change contract + makeover kit.

  • 1,150 gems: cost of buying each separately, at full price.
  • 1,080 gems: cost of contract + bulk discount cost of a single makeover
  • 1,000 gems: cost of the identify repair kit, that includes both items.

I don’t remember seeing the name change contract discounted (but then, my memory isn’t what it used to be).

I know the feeling but understand where you’re coming from.
I made the big decision to reroll my thief a few weeks ago, she was 2 yrs old with full map completion and weaponsmithing 500. Human to Norn.
I’m very glad I did it now, I’ve relevelled the crafting and did all map completion, as a challenge I wanted to see how long it took, 44hrs game time.
All you really miss out on is Birthday Boosters.
Good Luck in deciding!

Just a question. Why would you not buy an extra character slot and make another thief?

That way you still have the original character in addition to the new one.

That’s what I’ve always done.

Probably because of cost. Four character slots and two name change contracts cost me over 50$

I’ve spent my fair share in gemstore to be able to play all professions, I wouldn’t like to have 2 of any of them The reason I deleted the human was because when I made my Incinerator, it bugged me too much how humans ran with them mainly, so off she went ^^
