Added a chat option – enabled by default – that shows only the messages coming from players sharing your client’s text language.

  • This option is only applied in to the /map and /say channels, as well as the /team channel in the Edge of the Mists. Other channels are not affected.
  • Messages from players in your friend list are never hidden.
  • Messages from players from the same World as yours are never hidden.
  • Messages from players currently in your party are never hidden.
  • Messages from players representing the same guild as you do are never hidden.
  • Reminder: if you encounter players using abusive or rude language in chat, please report them by right-clicking their name in the chat window and selecting ‘Report.’
  • Blocking a player still functions the same way.

So I feel this is like a kick in EotM pug commanders on EU. Now I know it’s not intentional but this week red side has French, German and Spanish servers too. And to be honest red side is already underpowered compared to the other sides, we even have less players and now by default those with other than the commander’s client language won’t see what the commander writes on chat. And that’s the only communication a commander has about what he would like to do.

In my opinion it either shouldn’t work on EotM or shouldn’t be enabled by default.

TLDR: megaserver chat changes affecting EotM is bad for EU pug commanders, since other client language players can’t read their directions!
Suggestion: don’t make it on by default because majority of players don’t read update notes, and they won’t know why the commanders are so silent.

Being that EoTM is just a karma train, the only thing needed to communicate is “clockwise” and “counter-clockwise.” I’m sure GW2 players are smart enough to learn these two words in a variety of languages.

People complained about seeing other languages in EotM too, I don’t know if people await Anet to be gods when the issue is first and oremost caused by the players who are disrespectful enough to insult everyone people speaking another language.

We didn’t ask for a chat filter, we asked for smart merging of servers to mega-maps (so basically what ANet promised before the patch).
And as a lot of people do not read patch notes or the forums, you can expect a default setting to off causing mayhem.

I don’t know how anyone else feels about this but my reaction was the same as I had to the profanity filter – turned it off as soon as I logged in and I’ll hopefully forgot it even exists before long.

I understand some people don’t like to see other languages but this is not a fix for that, it’s just creating a new range of problems alongside it.

I don’t think you’ve understood how this new option works. If you’re on an English language server (for example) the game now defaults to hiding everything said by anyone on a French, German or Spanish server.

No matter what language they say it in, or whether you’re able to understand it or not. It just won’t appear so you’d never know they said anything at all.

It’s on by default. Majority of people don’t read update notes (How do I know? Check map chat/guild chat after updates, and see all the stupid questions that are all in the update notes!). So they won’t know what’s going on. The thing is good, I’m not against it. Just don’t make it on by default.

Correction: actually it depends on client language. There are people who play an English client on non-English servers, I believe.

You didn’t get the change either. It’s client language based. If someone has English client, and you have too, they can still insult you in another language and you will see it unless you block them!

Let’s see…If it is not on by default, then no one that reads the patch notes knows about it, and (for them, probably the majority) the problem continues to exist.

If it is on by default, everyone (that it might concern) is made aware of it, and can choose to enable it, or not.

Considering so few read patch notes, according to statements on the forums, it probably is not the worst way of bringing it game-wide to attention.

Well I look at it like this: if it’s on by default, and people don’t know about it, it ruins gameplay. If it’s not on by default, and people don’t know about it, players and their preferences can ruin the gameplay. I say it’s not good if the game itself ruins gameplay.

the problem with that is that a big chunk of players will not know about this as they dont read the patch notes (after every patch there are tons of players asking what is new/different) and by enabling it by default they may wonder why they dont see any other languages but only a few will really look into it…

I don’t mind reading French or Spanish in chat. I don’t understand it, but that’s not the real problem… I’m German, I play on a German server, but my client is set to English (because the german translation is often wrong or confusing). If a player from another German server (that has his language set to German) writes something in mapchat, I can’t read it – because our server is not the same, our client language is not the same and they most likely are not in our guild or on my friendlist as well…

I would like to turn off Spanish and French and Russians in mapchat, but that forces me to turn off those other players too… Maybe we could have a list of available languages and turn them on/off separately?

Could look like that:
_________________________________________________
| Only show chat from players using following client languages:

| [x] English
| [x] German
| [ ] French
| [ ] Spanish
| [ ] Bork Bork Bork

I think this could be a satisfying option for all of us…

you can be speaking german to a german player, but if your client language is english, he won’t see what you were saying. Remember, this doesn’t filter languages spoken. It filters everything that is being spoken from a specific client.

In other words, it is another “if the world gives you bugs, don’t fix bugs, make a workaround that disables something else” famous Anet solution.

I’m usually the first to go defend Anet on their choices, but this one is just… bad.

I’m French. I play on a French server. But, like most people who’ve dabbled in MMORPGs for a while, I’ve learnt my fair share of English, enough to communicate easily with non-French players (in my case, it’s even better, i’ve also learnt enough german and spanish to understand the basics).

Suddenly, when I want to play on other language servers (i’m looking at you guys, amazing Desolationners !), it’s like I’m not there. Worse, now with the Megaserver, I don’t have the choice to be put with ppl with other languages. People who likely won’t have changed the option, because they won’t know it was there and they don’t read patch notes, especially when they are not advertised on the site. (it took me more than a year and a half to figure out there as a way to put timestamp in chat…)

So suddenly, it’s like I am ignored by potentially most of the map. Bad, bad move? I could very well be speaking english, my client is French, no one will see it. That’s effectively building a real wall based on the language barrier to destroy the feeling of community that was the strong point of the game.

Another example. In order to follow some guides on skin unlocking, I’m currently playing in English. My whole server now ignores me. And I’ve sometimes before switched to an english client, just to experience a different experience with different texts and voices (and to be able to use the /wiki command… which doesn’t work well in other languages !) … now I can still do so, at the price of being read by the pther players…

I think players who don’t want to see other languages don’t understand what a MMO is for, but OK, if they really want, they can shut us all off. But don’t make it by default.

If a player REALLY wants to only see his language, he’ll be able to do it. For the majority of players, I’m sure it’s not a problem.

Just tried Tequatl on an overflow where 99 percent of the people must have had another language set up in their clients as myself (German that is). Almost all of them must have had that filter enabled by default and didn’t even notice it.

I’ve tried it in the Mapchat, I’ve tried it on Say, I’ve even tried to NOT be ignored via Emotechannel. No chance! This is the worst idea after all the others before.

Who cried for a chatfilter? We just wanted a better sorting per language. I never wanted English to disappear for me, I never wanted to be ignored because I like to play the game in another language as other people I might comunicate with because I do NOT refuse to speak English, even if my native language is German.

But now I’ll be ignored, even if I have this option switched off because others haven’t. Does Anet really want to chase their players away or what’s up with that? Do they wish to close the EU servers entirely, to have the remaining players join NA? So it’s only NA and CN left? No? but it just starts to feel like that…

Wouldn’t worry about the chat language filter.. as far as I can tell it doesn’t work anyway.
Been on three maps and EotM today.. my language server is English, I have got the language filter on and still see dutch, german and all manner of other lingo..
Don’t get me wrong, I couldn’t careless where your from and what language you speak but there is no point having this tool in the first place imo when a language can be set to one thing as a default and then they simply start spurting out all there guild spam, chat spam, profanities, LFG spam etc and general chit caht in a different language endlessly.

Someone back at base, as ever, couldn’t be bothered to think it through properly or even be bothered to test it properly imo.

It DOES indeed work.
Of f course you still see German or dutch around. It doesn’t filter by language, but per client.

So if your client is set to only show English, you will only see what people with their clients set to English type. Off course a player with his client set to English can write something in German you might read.
But Players who set their clients to German and write in English are just filtered. See the problem here?

As long as you’re not amongst your homeworldpeople and others have that opftion toggled, willingly or unwillingly, as it is ON by default… Yes, you are.
And I can feel your pain, really. Even in the EU using a French or German, even a spanish client makes you a minority compared to all the people (even French, German or Spanish ones do use an English client for some reasons) wo play in English.

To make this determine if you’re blocked by default or not is just not right. It’s a good thing for intolerant individuals that can’t stand anything but their own native language, but they could toggle it if needed, it shouldn’t be ON by default. Plus, nobody does really miss people that disappear in their sweet little bubble if toggling this option on.
