You are looking at this the wrong way.

If you have an Abyss dye on 2 of your 5 characters you are not losing 1 Abyss dye, you are gaining 3 free Abyss dyes and 1 Unidentified Dye.

That’s completely true, however ANet engineered this market turmoil by going down the unid dye route. The OP’s suggestion is good in that the markets would have remained unchanged or perhaps dropped slightly due to people holding off on alt dye purchases until after the path — regardless the impact would have been slight if any at all.

Instead the market went a bit nuts. And in typical ANet fashion, it’s probably based on only half the true story. Which is why they shouldn’t have described the exact mechanics at all until the patch went live via the patch notes.

Part of me thinks that someone in ANet was thinking “hey, wanna see something funny? Watch this…”

Also consider the case where someone bought five Abyss dyes… they get 4 unid dyes. Not as pleasant from that vantage point.

But they don’t lose anything either, so it isn’t “unpleasant” unless they are comparing themselves to others instead of enjoying the free stuff they were given.

its not the unidentified dye thats the problem really, its why they are doing it i dont get. It would be incredibly easy to refund the exact dye you have multiples of.

I am also concerned because, all it would have taken is one nod from one person to a gold seller and the gold seller could have bought up dyes to make easy gold earned officially in the mass. Its all very unusual.

They don’t want to cause unnecessary damage to the dye market. If they suddenly inserted 100,000 Abyss dyes, the price of the Abyss dye would plummet.

Inserting random dyes will keep dyes that have strong demand from being upset.

So they’re protecting the doods who stocked up on Abyss dyes?

I mean is the Abyss market that important? I can understand precursor market and maybe some high volume commodities… but Abyss dye? Seriously?

How about the current turmoil in the dye market as a whole? That’s your trade for protecting the Abyss dye. All dyes just become less obtainable.

You aren’t losing anything, you are gaining an Unidentified dye for each dye you have more than one of unlocked already.

Every dye you have unlocked so far will become account unlocked. If you have an Abyss unlocked today, then on April 15 you will be able to use Abyss on ALL of your characters. If you have Abyss unlocked today on 2 characters, then on April 15 you will be able to use Abyss on ALL of your characters AND you will get 1 free Unidentified Dye.

It remains to be seen if the people that bought thousands of unidentified dyes this morning will actually make a profit off their investment. If these people all sell their dyes within a few months of the update, the market will be flooded and prices will drop, maybe below the price they paid. If they’re willing to hold them for more than a year after the update, then yeah, they might make a profit.

are you honestly thinking that millions of people have bought multiple abyss dyes? your having a laugh like. Wouldnt everyone benefit from abyss dyes being cheaper, atleast they will be worth more than normal dyes and lets face it people will buy them up to sell later, which will drive the price right back up in no time.

the reason i say it should be the specific dye is because it removes the initial exploit which is banking people 2000 gold from spending 50 gold :/

I think the reason for refunding the dyes as unidentified dyes is due to bag space issues. If you are both an altaholic and a dye collector (as I am), you might have several characters with over 200 dyes each. If ArenaNet tried to refund each color duplicated on an alt, you would very quickly run into over full bags and no where to store the created dyes. So by giving unidentified dyes, they will stack nicely and give you a shot at unlocking something new.

I have absolutely no idea why you thought giving a 20 silver Unidentified Dye in return for Dyes that could be purchased for less than 1 silver each was a good idea. I really don’t.

I hope to god this is an April fools, because it’s a complete joke.

Seeing as unid’d dye is like 65s atm, that doesn’t hold water really. All the dyes that aren’t Abyss make up for it if you sell them unid’d. IDK. Much better to look at it the optimistic way: You are unlocking all the cool dyes you have for all your toons. I think that is a much better outlook.

Lmfao lets just clam down and sit back and think about this for a moment.

Ok i can see the supply for dyes but where is the demand? I will let you into a little secret there is none.

Why buy all the unidentified dye up, how do you expect to shift them exactly? what are you going to do with them sell them to who i ask?
Everyone will have ever jumped on the bandwagon and done exactly the same as you and will have there own stacks to shift themselves, are you going to buy their dyes? as they shore are not going to buy yours.

You clearly forget that the vast majority of player playing now will have no need to buy dyes of you or ever again as you can bet your kitten the most have all the rares dyes they want/need and now they are account bound across all there characters so there not going to be buy them of you.

so what options are left stock pile them for months hoping people will suddenly create a massive demand for dyes pushing the market price up for players alts, oh wait! never mind, ummmm……. maybe you could wait for new player to join and collect the gold need to buy said dyes.
Good luck with that LOL

Do you really think Anet did not know this is how the player base would react to this change and do you not think they would have put measure in place or will put measures in place on release day to make all those dye you stockpile worthless?

Can anyone say gem store dye sets!, for a set gem/gold price set my Anet.

So If you think this is you meal ticket, you’re going to be greatly disappointed all your going to end up with is a bank fall of dye you can not shift and a shed load of wasted gold.

truly priceless.

I have 8 characters. I only have Abyss and Celestial on one of them right now. That same character also has a ton of other dyes unlocked.

Once the new system hits, I get all those dyes across all 8 characters now; plus any unique dye unlocks on my other 7 slots.

Duplicate unlocks means I get an unidentified dye as compensation; and it can potentially be another unlock across all 8 of my characters or a possible chunk of cash since dyes will now be harder to obtain if it is something I already have account unlocked.

My only complaint is not seeing the blog post sooner; I got to watch the last 8s dye get flipped to 20s+ right as I got the search window sorted. :/

This system is an overall upgrade; don’t knock it.

To many people, both video and ESPECIALLY the wording of the blog post are very unclear.

The dyes I have unlocked prior to the 4/15 update… will they be unlocked account wide? Or are players using dyes before all of this needing a second copy of each one?

Example: I have unlocked Black Cherry on MesmerBob on 4/14. On 4/16, does EngiBob also have access to Black Cherry?

Thank you in advance.

Doubt it. If Anet didn’t want to fill our bags and banks then you’d need a 10th of the bloodstone dust to make an ascended weapon with its drop rate being 10% of its current. But of course that’s not the case.

Anet are giving unidentified dyes to reduce the amount of expensive dyes you’d have to sell after the change.

You’d do even better if you stocked up on dyes worth coppers… as no dye is selling for less than 22s now. The direct result of the blog post.

I expect unid dyes to drop — the market will be flooded after the update (assuming the blog didn’t leave any details out regarding binding… lol, yeah that never happens).

However the cheap dyes will never become cheap in the near future. Those are all being consumed right now to cash in on the unid dyes after the patch. With the changed to dye drops (a bit ambiguous in the blog post), there’s little downward pressure on those cheap dyes.

1. All dyes are account bound from 4/15 onward.
2. If any of your characters has a dye, ALL of your characters have that dye.
3. If more than one of your characters has the SAME dye, ALL of your characters will have that dye AND you will get 1 additional Unidentified dye for EACH of your characters that has the exact same dye.
4. AFTER 4/15 all unidentified dyes and identified dyes that you receive will be ACCOUNT BOUND when you USE them and useable on ALL of your characters, see #1.

More on #3
Alpha has black dye and putrid stank dye.
Beta has black dye, purple dye and catnip dye.
Zeta has no dyes cause he’s cheap.

After 4/15 Alpha, Beta, and Zeta will have Black, Putrid Stank, Purple, and Catnip dyes.
You will ALSO receive 1 unidentified dye because Alpha and Beta both have a Black dye.
Now, if you identify that dye you just received and it is NOT A DUPLICATE of one you already have and you USE IT, it will become account bound and useable on Alpha, Beta, and Zeta.
If it is a duplicate of one you already have unlocked (another Black dye), you get to SELL IT on the Trading Post for gold/silver/copper.

Please sticky this… we still have another 21 days of this question popping up.

BUT…..

What no one has mentioned yet we’re all going to be charged to change colours on armour. There will be NO character unlocks after 4/15. This means that they will have to become account unlocks on 4/15.

Based on the wording in the post, the only other alternative is to DELETE every dye you’ve ever unlocked and give you ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in return, unless you had unlocked it twice or more, at which point you would get an unidentified dye.

Since the only other alternative is such a horrifically bad one that would cause more rage than anything in gaming history, it is safe to believe that all of your dyes will automatically become account unlocks on 4/15.

There is nothing they can do. The people that have the free time during the devblog will always have an advantage over you. If they closed the TP and opened it in..8 hours. There would still be an advantage of people who log on before others do. There is no possible way to have every active GW2 player in existence log in at the same so its fair.

Even then..advantage to the smaller servers who don’t lag out. No matter what would be done…it will be unfair in some way or another.

You can impact prices of items you’d “like” to have as a player. That is an impact, although not nearly the same as impacting players on “required” content.

The degree of impact is debatable, but it does and can exist.

Should it impact your enjoyment of the game? No, but unfortunately it does to some degree from Player to Player.
