We’re merging several threads on the topic of an expansion for Guild Wars 2. As always, we apologize if merging causes disruption in the flow of the individual conversations, but we’re sure you’ll be able to sort out the topics you’re interested in and merging is helpful in keeping topics current and avoiding a lot of redundant comments.

Thanks for understanding.

Edit to add: While doing this merge, the forums decided to take a brief “time out” and I was worried for a while that the attempted merge may have resulted in the disappearance of a few threads. Things look OK now (except for the fact my merge message was repeated). You are welcome to discuss the topic in this thread, with our thanks for keeping the conversation focused.

well….what will you guys do if the expansion doesnt come in 2015? i am sure that arenanet realized by now that they NEED an expansion in order for the game to progress in a grand scale. not only that, but the constant pressure being put on them by players, credible websites, popular sites, etc.

It won’t happen. They have sad time and again that they aren’t gonna do expansions and if they suddenly released one out of no where it would shatter what little credibility they have left in the eyes of the community.

There would be almost 0 reason to believe them on anything, one way or the other.

‘THE expansion’ – as if its something that exists?

Anet has never even hinted towards any kind of expansion. More importantly I think all this living story content is evidence that they are not focusing on an expansion at the moment. I think people need to stop with the expansion hype.

They never said they wouldn’t do an expansion. They did say they were working on bigger projects in the background of the type you’d expect to find in an expansion but that they didn’t know how they would deliver those updates. And that’s all they said on that matter.

I mean if they didn’t make an expansion but they opened up new zones, give us new weapons and skills and a new profession or race, what’s the difference if it comes as an expansion or not?

Promotional difference. People who left and/or who haven’t started playing won’t be impacted by the news that the game is getting some additions. The announcement of an expansion has a promotional impact that is healthy for the game.

They never said they won’t do an expansion.

Actually, they have. This statement was somewhat retracted in 2013 by Mike O’Brien. He hinted, in an interview, that expansions were a possibility . . . but not any time in the near future.

“We don’t need an expansion to pay the bills, and we’re not focused on an expansion right now. I won’t try and predict the future, maybe someday we will do one, maybe we won’t. But for now we are focused on the living world. We believe we can update the world and adapt the world in any way we want to through these bi-weekly updates.”

All signs point to no expansion next year. Sorry. Not happening.

We’ve gotten almost an expansion’s worth this year, tbh. New zones, nice story for a game, tons of new skins, upgrades like the wardrobe, the trait rework (which I think is stupid and bad for the game, but it counts) and the NPE. A lot of stuff was added or updated.

ANet’s real problem is that MMO players are trained to expect an expansion. Without that hype, I’m not sure how they’ll draw the players back. Some kind of large LS release with major press releases?

I suppose the difference is that an expansion comes all at once, while Living Story/Feature Patch does not. I’ll freely admit to being nostalgic for that overwhelming “omgtheressomuchtodo!” feeling that came with Guild Wars 1 Nightfall.

I already find myself logging in, checking the BLTP, and then sort of shuffling my inventory until I log off. If the market hasn’t moved, my guild isn’t hosting an event, or there’s nothing going on in WvW, I’ve got nothing to do.

Another year of that? I’m going to be leaving. I suspect it will be like last year, where they release some piddly crap and a hyped up balance and ‘feature’ patch that I come back to check out. Will next year’s ‘feature pack’ have enough to make me check it out again after this year’s Massive Shrug? That’s the question. The path of least resistance is what’s holding me here for now.

My forum posting has gone up like 500% in the last two weeks because I’m so kitten bored in-game. Play my 5,000th PvP match? Eh, no thanks. Level my 10th alt to 80? NPE changed that a little bit, but not enough to reinvigorate the process (and in many ways, slowed it down). Flip Speldan Mill for the 1,000th time? Nah, stacking the Vets into a pile and 1ing them hasn’t changed much. Run TA again? I can recite each path line for line…

Add some real NEW stuff or I’m gonzo.

Exactly the problem. People are used to a hype-release cycle for casuals and gear grinds for hardcore. GW2 is deliberately a different type of game. We’ve gotten quite a bit – not an expansion’s worth, but close – but since we haven’t had the expansion hype people aren’t feeling as excited about it. If ANet worked on press releases / marketing and released a few more QoL features I think people would be happier just because of buzz.

shrug There’s lots of reasons to be unhappy about GW2, but ‘we don’t have an expansion’ doesn’t seem like one of them. We’re definitely getting new stories and features. The development pace isn’t out of line with what I’d expect from a studio of ANet’s size, really. And the quick release schedule has benefits – we get bugfixes pretty fast. I’m not happy with all the updates, but ANet is obviously very invested in GW2’s future and continuing to update it.

No, that’s not because of their lack of PR or hypemachine, it’s because that is recycled. Silverwastes isn’t new, it is WvW ideas with AI mobs sprinkled around. As a player that actually played the whole game instead of sticking to a niche, I’m not excited about that because it isn’t exciting, not because Neoseeker didn’t write an article about it. A couple of new enemy models, 2 hours worth of talking heads, and a constantly reworked daily system isn’t ‘close to’ an expansion.

You’re right, GW2 IS a different type of game – one that releases content more slowly than some F2P competitors, despite the same focus on microtransactions. I’m bored because I’m bored, not because they didn’t add grind. They are very good at adding grind (ascended, mawdrey, legendaries), but if I finally do grind out that legendary, it will be the same legendary I saw some dude wearing in 2013. And that will be BORING.

Ok, we will assume that GW2 isn’t even good enough to comepte vs other F2P titles. Now ask yourself, why in the world would Anet bother do anything if they get more profit than almost every single western MMO title? the game has a really healthy population compared to most other MMOs. They are gaining millions of dollars every year. And the industry has almost no compitition. All the games that have been released during the last years, have been flops more or less. Final Fantasy is a good title but again it is focused on gear/stat progression and therefore would have quite the different crowd.

It is not only GW2 being not so statisfying. The MMO market in genereal is empty more or less and companies are struggling to keep their titles alive.

my thoughts exactly. they DONT have a choice. if they fail to deliver, then they will crash hard. they been trying too hard and been in the dark too long, they have an expansion. lol is a game really going to announce 50K grand prices in tournies for a game that WONT receive an expansion? loool they would crash mega hard. plus they will lose too much support if they fail to deliver. if they are going to try and go pro on the PVP/WVW/PVE then they NEED an expansion, including a lot more PVP content.

No way have we got an expansion worth of content this year.

We’ve pretty much got the equivalent of a single large zone of WoW.

Living story would be okay if they actually did release content bi-weekly all year round.

I don’t know why any of this is my problem, unless you are roundabout agreeing with me. I actually don’t know.

They should do something about it because they won’t remain profitable for long if they don’t. Competition might be sputtering in one field, but you will have to trust me that there are other games on the planet to play.

To snipe one bit of your post though:

Final Fantasy is a good title but again it is focused on gear/stat progression and therefore would have quite the different crowd.

I don’t know what game you’re playing, this one is a gear grind too. The gear grind is different, in that the linear progression grind like that of the FF games is more constant and impactful, but GW2 is a gear grind game too.

Why do I make gold? To buy silk. Why do I buy silk? To craft gear.

Why do I run dungeons? To get tokens. Why do I get tokens? To buy exotics to forge for a precursor, to sell for gold(gear) or make a legendary(gear).

Why do I play WvW? To kill some enemies. Why do I kill enemies? To get their bags. Why do I want their bags? For the gold inside. Why do I want gold? To buy silk. Why do I buy silk? Gear.

Do I really need the gear? No, I can play in exotics and exotics are easy enough to come by. But what do I do in the exotics? Run dungeons for money and tokens that I buy _ with?

People have made this game more than it is, and I mean that in a good way. A fun guild and talkative friends are fun to play with. But the game without these people is an RNG slog for the end game: a legendary.

Or is there some other end-game I’m missing? The ignored WvW mode perhaps? I am venting now, so I might as well finish. I reached the end of my PvP reward track today and then I stared at the other tracks and thought ‘I don’t need any of this stuff…‘. The only reason to start a new track is for the weapon chests, which I open as greatswords and throw into the forge before saying ’Shucks, another pearl sword’.

I’m so darn bored.

Ive gone on from GW2 to play WoW which has been refreshing but honestly I want GW2 to succeed and be the game I play. I love their creativeness and philosophy behind this game. However, due to the staleness over time and there being too little things to keep me pulled in compared to other games it is why I decided to leave. I check back in time to time but honestly if there was an expansion I would come back. And hopefully it adds depth into what this game already is in order to keep players besides simple dailies every day.

And if no expansion, then I think the numbers in the community would definitely drop if they don’t add more to this game than what they did this year.

GW2 was never made to be more innovative than other MMOs, it was made to be different than GW1.

What part of “We don’t need an expansion to pay the bills,” are you not getting? And it’s not two years. It’s still one. And the statement was made mid-year to boot.

So, I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt. Let’s say a year and a half. That’s ‘not in the near future’ to you?

Are you not are fully aware most expansions, from the start, take a minimum of two years to storyboard, write, create, and polish? We’re not even talking alpha and beta testing to weed out the kinks.

Yet, somehow, we’re to believe that on top of all the current Living Story content, seasons, and other promotionals, you want us to believe that somehow ANet has a team dedicated to massing a new expansion.

All secret-like with no announcement or promotion of any kind?

Well, if you believe all that, I have a bridge to sell you in Brooklyn too.

Gone to Reddit.

I for one will just continue playing as I do now. I find the addition of the Living Story to be enough to keep me interested and there are still WvW and sPvP between those.
If I get bored I simply play another game that day. Simple as that.

They don’t NEED to release the living world updates either (seeing as people usually don’t pay for them) in order to pay the bills.

We don’t NEED to play the game in order to have fun, and yet we still do.

Let me understand this. You want to argue semantics as a counterpoint that there will be an expansion next year? Fine. I don’t ‘need’ to get into a debate about vocabulary again either. Show me, or anyone on these boards, where there is even a hint of ANet releasing an expansion within that timeframe.

Find it.

We’ll wait.

IMHO the problem is:

Even if ANet releases an expansion, what happens after that? One year without content after the expansion release? Is that really the goal we want to achieve?

I can imagine that after 1 month or 2 the flamewar “there is no new content!!!!” will begin again. I doubt there will be a 2-week update cycle after an expansion. That impression bores me alot more than the actual LS releases.

But it is rather important.
What they said those 1,5 years ago was that they don’t NEED to make an expansion in order to pay the bills.
Nothing in that line says that they WON’T make an expansion.

Do you only ever do stuff you actually NEED to do? Or do you do stuff you WANT to do as well?

In that case the game will die even more than 2014. And they probably lost a lot of players already.

Since Anet has a policy of not talking about stuff till it’s near release, not mentioning an expansion isn’t proof of anything.

Sometimes you have to read between the lines.

There are over 300 employees at Anet including some top level devs that are still wtih the company. Those people aren’t working on the living story, which is only a team of 20.

So what are they doing? Talking a year coffee break? Where is Ree Sosebee and Jeff Grubb and all the other guys who still work at Anet?

They’re either a) working on a big big project or b) working on another game.

I think the big big project is far more likely.

A decent expansion must be properly marketed, so new players could be acquired with it. GW2 was announced 2 years in advance, as far as I remember. A decent expansion should give contents with at least 50% of the main game, so it would be perhaps announced 6 months to 1 year in advance while it is still being worked on.

This doesn’t rule out 2015, but since we didn’t hear anything, even no hints and no rumors, I bet it is a long time to an expansion – late 2015 or mid to late 2016. If ever.

But I assume GW2 is being abandoned in terms of content and only the gemshop is filled with more and more junk. The living story is only a stopgap to simulate minimal developer activity in my opinion. Real development in terms of extended new playable (not farmable/grindable) content is not to be expected, if I look back on the content development of the last 2 years. What a pity!

I’m going to predict what will happen in 2015:

1. People are expecting an expansion.

2. ArenaNet shows a new campaign.

3. The usual whiners will say: Anet has lied us, using as an excuse that is not the same a campaign that an expansion.

I’m completely fine with it. I’m still having fun. I haven’t nearly completed everything I’d like to complete despite having nearly 5000 hours in the game. I do my PvE and WvW. I haven’t even really touched sPvP yet so I still have entire game mode left to explore.

The Living World “DLC” is also keeping me occupied just like any other game’s (I come form consoles before GW2) DLC would.

Best $50 I ever spent considering the hours per dollar ratio I’ve gotten out of it.

The only thing that might possibly drive me away from this game are the whiners. They permeate this forum and I hear them constantly in /m chat in-game. I’m not sure what the max capacity of the block list is, but hot dang I’ve gotta be approaching the limit.

Would you prefer one year without content and without expansion? Remember, LS is apparently only a sideshow that at best 20 people are working on. Or so Anet claims. If so, they should be able to keep it up (especially if they continue their practice of more breaks than LS) expansion or no expansion. And we’re not getting much beyond LS as it is now.

Not that i believe we’re getting one. Especially not in 2015 – there would have been mentions of it already.

So, what will i do? That depends on what other games will show up.

Actions, not words.

Here’s the things the community has been asking for:

  • More pvp game modes;
  • More professions;
  • More weapon skills unlocked per profession;
  • GvG;
  • Guild Halls/ Housing;
  • More WvW features and depth;
  • More explorable maps;
  • More challenging content;
  • Mounts (=divisive, but requested nonetheless);
  • Raids;
  • More dungeons;
  • Precursor scavenger hunting and crafting;
  • Expanded story;
  • Etc.

Here’s what the Living Story Season 2 is delivering:

  • More maps;
  • Story;
  • Cosmetic grinding.

Pff, too consumed by apathy on expansion. If it happens it happens, if not, oh well.

If there was/is (whatever) an expansion (or even an extended campaign), I would suggest it would most likely be announced at the share/ stock holders meetings first. We are way down the food chain when it comes to that.

Are you not fully aware most expansions, from the start, take a minimum of two years to storyboard, write, create, and polish? We’re not even talking alpha and beta testing to weed out the kinks.

I don´t like that outcome but Ardenwolfe has the best arguments here.

Since the above quoted Anet statement is from mid-2013 and I also believe that it would take atleast 1,5 – 2 years to make a full expansion the best logical guess is: no release in 2015.

By my calculation they’ve been working on it for almost a year already. That’s how long the big names have been silent for.

This would be a 180-degree turn from Mike O´Briens statement within a few months – so maybe you´re even right?

Naah, I don’t think that’s what Vayne means.
Colin mentioned before that aside from Living Story and Feature patches they are working on huge projects that they are going to introduce in the future. Now assuming he wasn’t lying or exaggerating, they should have something to introduce. He also added, that they weren’t sure as to how they wanted to introduce that content. Meaning, that maybe they never thought about an expansion and may consider new ways to implement the content eventhough, I eprsonally would rather have an expansion IF there is content to be implemented.

My apologies, but speculation and ‘reading between the lines’ isn’t proof nor evidence to a counter-argument.

I’ve provided proof their president said the opposite of what you’re hoping to hear. If anyone would like to provide proof for the opposite argument, I’m all ears.

Otherwise, all you guys have got is wishful thinking.
