The Leveling & Open World Compendium

I fear, people highly underestimate the potential effect of ESO on GW2.
The reason there will be no big content updates in April is probably, that everyone at ANet is going to play ESO to learn at least from AvA.
You have literally no idea what goes on in a studio do you?
I do not care what is going on at ANet. I do not care if it is hard to program the code, or write a story.
I did not buy GW2 to know what’s going on internally at ANet. If I want to become a coder or a novelist, I go to a place to learn it.
I bought GW2 to be entertained. I like the games core. Do I have to be a novelist or a coder to be able to criticize it? Or a specialist on HR, so I know what’s going on?
No.
I do not even think I am overreacting, I was thinking about making this descision for a fairly long time. I am no longer convinced that the product receives the quality it deserves. I care for it, but there is nothing I can do but to give feedback. I surely gave my feedback on this boards, in positive and negative ways.
So the choice is:
Eat whatever they serve, or just find some other place for lunch. If you get crap every time at your standard place and nothing changes even if you tell them, accepting that this is what you will get in the future too is probably a reasonable conclusion.
No overreaction involved.
P.S.: The quote about being mad is fairly famous, I though everyone would get it.

April 1 (Fools Day) is a Tuesday…. could be a very interesting day then….
People who actually care about GW2 will stay.
So… you’re saying half the devs and all the forum mods will quit?
thac so funny how u gona care for temp content whic i ignore or im not investing anytime i just wanna take some farm out of it cuz arena net whit no holy trinity is making the game to be played as zerg fest .and telling people not gona recive anyting new is telling people this is it people stop playing the game no more content we do gw3 atm
I would be stoked if you put one of your teams on a month long bug fixing binge. An update that is just one giant list of bug fixes would be amazing. So do that.
Developers tend not to worry about what other developers do and when. I really don’t think Wildstar or Elder Scrolls release date is much of a consideration to what Arena.net is doing, if any at all.
PUBLISHERS are the ones that tend to do the worrying about timing and windows for release. A publisher would sit on a completed title for MONTHS if they feel the money would be worth it in the end.
So, if it seems from Arena.net comments that they don’t seem the least bit bothered about other MMO releases… it’s probably because they aren’t.
So I’m curious.
If the rumors are true, and this expansion sized patch is coming April 2nd, will you guys post at all at what might be coming in it? Surely if the patch is that size, you guys must have a ton of things that are done and ready to go with it already.
Um.. There entire first 1.5 years of the game weren’t even close to an expansion size. what makes you think this next patch will be?
And from what they’ve told us about the April patch, it’s not going to be remotely like their competitors.
Man I wish they had never done the LS.. it (for lack of a better word since they ban you for not being a “positive”) is “really great”/sarcasm

So is that another “not going to last for another month” these have been coming out from day one why is your more true then the others?
Any way Anet know for April fools who knows what going to happen it would be fun to see SAB make a come back.
We know the balance update (skills, sigil/rune rework, crit damage changes etc) will come with the feature patch. Other than that, we have some hints about what else might be included.
We know there are new elite skills on the way.
We know Anet has been working on a new pvp game mode since last year.
We know account bound wxp is on the way.
Anet may have done the commander tag changes they said they would do.
has LS season 1 ended yet? no. so don’t expect the feature patch within two weeks. as they said again, after the end of season one, they take a short break (maybe 1 month instead of 2 weeks beteween releases), after which the feature patch will be released. after that they’ll probably start LS season 2 and deliver the expansion like content everyone’s been hyping about.
personally, I couldn’t care less about new maps etc, feature patches and balancing are a lot more important right now, the game is still very ‘beta’ in some regards. once they fix the most obnoxious problems (slow trading post, custom/invite only overflows for wurm guilds, bigger party sizes, completely botched ascended crafting) , I welcome new content.
and since most new content is temporary anyway, I’d rather have features that stay and improve QOL instead of 4 weeks of grinding another zergfest then never seeing it again.

The simple notion that all 300+ of the devs are going to stop what they are doing for a month and play another MMO together, presumably for the purpose of spying/scouting the competition, is what prompted my question. Your lengthy response more than confirmed my suspicions. My problem wasn’t with your opinion on the game itself, it’s with the misconception you have about how it’s developed.
Anyway, it doesn’t really matter that ESO is coming out. If people want to play it, there’s really nothing Anet can do to stop them. I doubt even a full blown expansion would stop people. It might even be a better strategy to take their time and release an expansion later when the hype for ESO has died down.
GW2 is pretty much done...
Look forward to a GW3 within the next 2 years.
Guild Wars 3 takes everything you love about GW 2 and puts it in a instanced world...
They don’t tell us stuff because then you end up with a situation like…. account bound wxp, still waiting on that one for five months and getting very restless about it.
Everyone shouldn’t get their hopes up for “expansion type” content either, which frankly would be large such as a new race or profession, new zones, new weapons etc. Only looking forward to three announced things, account bound wxp, extra 2h sigil, runes reworking, maybe for a features patch before the tournament who knows.
But stop dreaming up stuff for expansion sized patch, you’ll only disappoint yourself more.
We’ll go into more detail soon, just to re-iterate so it’s clear:
“The next round of major features will be bundled together into a large “feature only” release that will come after the first season of the Living World 2014 has finished.”
A feature release is not an expansion, it’s a release focused on game features. Examples of game features we’ve done in the past would be: guild missions, account achievement system, spectator mode, new pvp maps, daily world boss chests, removing culling and giving visibility options, the WvW WxP system, etc.
oh my god, thank you SO MUCH for that clarification

I am suprised you missed the obvious sarcasm. As we all know, there will be at least one of the DEV’s playing the wildstar beta instead of ESO, even though it will be hard to find anything of value there.
Probably the one who was responsible for the event team that gave us the last update, as punishment.

I SERIOUSLY hope they aren’t trying to learn from ESO because I played the beta for a bit now and it is absolute garbage if you want to call it an mmo… if you wanna call it a single person online strategy game with other people around then by all means play ESO… I have a feeling the biggest share of people who bail on gw2 for it will be back or have wentto try something else within 1-3 months
I have a feeling the biggest share of people who bail on gw2 for it will be back or have wentto try something else within 1-3 months
Have you tried AvA?
The point is, people will leave and not all will come back as you said. Making low pop servers even more barren, and draining potential gem buyers.
How do you think this game will keep going? I see the China release sceptical, they have to compete with some big titels over there like Soul&Blade which is F2P, while GW2 is B2P even over there. So I wouldn’t expect too much profit on that side.
Every costumer gone is a problem of insufficient marketing.
expansion sized patch? yeah I doubt it. More like balance tweaks etc, not a whole lot of new content.
Oh ESO why do you have to be a p2p game?!
expansion sized patch? yeah I doubt it. More like balance tweaks etc, not a whole lot of new content.
Oh ESO why do you have to be a p2p game?!
Maybe because the developers are convinced that their product is good enough to keep many people paying a fee for the content they enjoy.
Ask yourself, where would GW2 be, if they asked for a sub. Would anyone pay for the content we get?

Well no, because GW2 content since launch was 5% QoL improvements and 95% filler content.
I’m doubtful about ESO as a subscription game though, think many will buy, rush through content and stop paying.
Yea, I think people are misunderstanding and therefore hyping themselves for nothing. Well, not really nothing but for a different kind of content.
The feature patches sound more as if they are going to be focused on Game mechanics, not content. Therefore new zones and duengons are something to be awaited from other patches, not this one.
TESO and Wildstar are coming out soon. Anet better have something up the sleeve instead of some bug fixes and quality of life updates.
TESO is a mediocre trash game.
The playstyle is awful. The combat is like GW2 but only 10 times slower. And the skill system is quite awful, you can’t come up with any tactical component due to the fact that the skill system is shallow, boring and completely uninspired.
The game is hyped into heaven and has got the ES-brand, but many ppl will realize at least one month of playing, how awful the game is in the end and they all will come back.
Where GW2 has heart and polish, ESO lacks both. Maybe 1-2 months this game will be a “danger” because of the “WOW ITS NEW” factor. After that it will take the SW:TOR path into oblivion.

Well i have to say it.. i am a fan of guild wars , but i have done all things to do , i mean realy ALL things. im boring now , i just wanted to play GW2 but im bored of it now.
i keep farm dungeons for gold and fractals for skins i almost have them all too just needed the shield.. ive done 100% of game now . what keeps me still ingame its my guild/friends…
Anet need to put some fresh things, this living story is so boring, this game is so casual now, im not that hardcore gamer but not casual too..
where are the new classes/races , we need new Maps >.< , some Zquests like things better then do the daily , wanted quests , more achieves not only 17/18 achieves per day in dailys -.-,
Im am searching a few days before for another game to play because im really bored.
Im still a fan of GW and i love the game , i just did all to do

Im not saying TESO is amazing, but its far from horrible. I’ve played four beta weekends, and I can tell you that the skill system is quite a bit deeper than GW2. You something like 5-7 weapon skills, 3 class trees with 5-7 skills, 5-7 racial skills, 5-7 armor skills, 5-7 guild skills(like mages guild or fighters guild), 5-7 profession skills for each profession. THEN you can morph these abilities to add an additional effect, such as knockback, stuns, more damage, mana on hit, etc. So the skill system is vastly superior to GW2 where you simply apply points across 5 lines. Not saying GW2 is a bad system, its a step up from WoW and such, but TESO definately takes the cake with its talent system.
Combat is definately a lot slower than GW2. And Its taken me a long time to wrap my head around it and get used to it, but now I take it for what it is and its not totally horrible.

I didn’t play GW1 so I have nothing to compare to. Sounds like a game I would have loved. But yeah, literally everything that drove the hype train up until release has gone out the window. Theres literally nothing left in GW2 that I was looking forward to pre-release. The concept of open world adventuring has been left to the naieve few that kid them selves into believing that completing dynamic events all alone is amazing, or then kid themselves into believing(and thus try to make me believe via weasel wording) that there actually ARE a decent amount of people adventuring and completing events in open world just for the fun of it. This is totally not true, and I’ve guested on a dozen worlds to prove this to myself. Theres no one in fireheart rise completing events. There is no one in timerbline falls completing events. There is no one in Lorners Pass completing events. The people playing this game are either hanging out in main cities since LA is destroyed, WvW, dungeons or funneled like sheep into the flavor of the week LS release. Arenanet’s initial vision of this game did not work out as they had hoped but they did absolutely nothing to help it along, even before LS. Now that we have LS funneling us into one or two zones, forget about the rest of the world. Their open world dynamic event adventure game concept is dead.
Its the sad but true reality of the game that I wish the people wearing rose tinted glasses would see.
If the upcoming big feature release does anything to foster true open world adventuring and gameplay without herding us like sheep into one or two zones(i.e. encourage us to play WHEREVER we want to and be rewarded for our time equally), I would consider coming back. But right now, this game is a shell of what it was and what it could have been.

Yeah, I was surprised too. Sort of creepy how it reflects the current state of the game.
My goodness it will be great when that one perfect game finally comes out. No more “this game sucks and I am leaving, really, just you wait, I am you know.” Bliss.
My goodness it will be great when that one perfect game finally comes out. No more “this game sucks and I am leaving, really, just you wait, I am you know.” Bliss.
I just think people expected and wanted the game that arnenanet hyped us on and borderline promised.
For GW1 players, it was the “If you like GW1 you’ll love GW2”. Quite the opposite. Nearly every person on these forums or anyone that Ive spoken to that has played GW1 has been burned and more GW1 players have left.
For players that cherished the idea of an open world with adventure at its heart(myself), were burned. Because other than the sake of adventuring, theres nothing at the end of the tunnel. All the goodies are within the LS content, where 90% of the playerbase is. So you feel like youre missing out. I wanted to enjoy adventuring into a cave and be properly rewarded for it at the same time. The only way I’ll make any sort of coin in the game is playing the TP or following the zerg in LS.
For players that expected explorable modes to be as difficult as the devs said it was pre-launch, got burned. Scorched. 9/10 dungeon paths are not played. Most dungeon paths are easily completed with a few brain cells. Arah is and one or two paths in CoF are the only ones that would give any sort of trouble. The rest are snoozeville. Oh, and aside from a fractal or two recently, theres been no love…NONE to dungeons. None.
For those who thought their exotic sets were BiS and didn’t want to get anything else, and liked their gear look…got burned badly. While you may not need ascended gear for most content, most people still want their BiS gear and they were content with exotic as BiS. Now if they want BiS, they must grind unto oblivion for.
Oh and for those not looking for grind…I dont know if I should laugh or cry here.
one thing is for sure, if the expansion is planned for 2015 and no big content patch will be released before, the game will die.
How exactly is Anet’s communication on the topic obscure? All the official word I’ve seen on the topic has been fairly specific, and is only obscure if you read every 5th word while flapping your arms in the air while screaming “Wub wub wub wub wub wub wub”.

If you’re not playing the game, why are you here on the forums constantly spewing negativity?
First season of Living Story? Oh, no. I expected it to end forever…
In any case, I did not say expansion in my original post. I said “expansion sized”. Features are all said and good, but this game needs new zones and they need to do it this year. I love the game, but it IS getting stale at this point.
If you’re not playing the game, why are you here on the forums constantly spewing negativity?
Probably because the game is not in a good state? He/she bought the game, he/she has as much of a right to state his/her opinion as you.
Who are you to judge people if they should or should not speak their minds.
Anet better have something good up their sleeves for this spring. Wildstar just leaked their release date, and that game is going to suck a lot of people away.
What are the biggest requests we’ve seen for changes to GW2… GvG? Roles in combat? Permanent content? Organized instances with a challenge? Wildstar offers all of those things right at launch.
It’s action oriented combat is really what GW2 should have been but failed to deliver.
You have until May 28th Anet to get your act together and release an expansion or I fear this game will shrink into oblivion.
Anyone who expects an expansion type of patch with new areas and things like that, will be helplessly disappointed I can pretty much garantee that.
Good points SaltyDave, this feature patch could be a massive disappointment to many people who are expecting more than it will deliver. This is partially because expectations aren’t being managed so people are assuming a lot, that’s human nature I think.
Isn’t is mostly happening because the Devs are overly vague about it? It has been said that GW2 has been mapped out for years to come. If so, what’s with the secrecy? If it’s a feature update, just spill it out. If it’s nothing storyline related it shouldn’t be a problem to just let everyone know what the plan is. It’s no wonder people start speculating about something -more- than QoL updates and stuff akin to the wallet when they don’t outright tell us what they’re working on. That would reduce a lot of frustration about stuff like this.

You’re right.
Wildstar release date was announced today: June 3rd.
I’ll be out of everyone’s hair within the next few months
So the skill system is vastly superior to GW2 where you simply apply points across 5 lines. Not saying GW2 is a bad system, its a step up from WoW and such, but TESO definately takes the cake with its talent system.
Combat is definately a lot slower than GW2. And Its taken me a long time to wrap my head around it and get used to it, but now I take it for what it is and its not totally horrible.
No it’s not. And I can tell you why: there are no synergy or passive related traits that are “tactical”.
In TESO you got a huge amount of skills, but they are very similar and there is nothing special about them, despite the class ones. Additionally, you can nowhere near the GW2 options build a character. I love my GW2 traits and I miss something like that in ESO. In the end every player will be the same due to the fact there is a “deeper” system behind the skills missing.
I like the way TESO wanted to go with its quantity of skills, but it failed because of the missing quality the system has got. I love synergy and tactics behind different playstyles and ESO only offers a hand full of them without being anytime tactical.
So Wildstar release is June 3rd. Nice to know that now.
If you don’t like GW2, it’s time for a break FOR YOU I think. I think ANet is doing a quite good job. And I am excited for March 18.
I think release was posponed by 9 weeks.
Like in WvW Season 1 they will probably not realease any feature update during season 2. And Season 2 was expanded to 9 weeks.
So my guess is June 10th.
And if accound bound XP or any commander changes wont be next week, that waiting will just upset a lot of people.
So the skill system is vastly superior to GW2 where you simply apply points across 5 lines. Not saying GW2 is a bad system, its a step up from WoW and such, but TESO definately takes the cake with its talent system.

Not sure you checked our morphing abilities. Brilliant idea and definately synergy there.

I checked it. Synergy? Haha yes. I am talking about passive Synergy classes have got. WoW, Rift, GW2, everywhere. That’s what is missing in ESO and that is the point why the combat in TESO will alway feel wack and boring.
If you’re not playing the game, why are you here on the forums constantly spewing negativity?
Probably because the game is not in a good state? He/she bought the game, he/she has as much of a right to state his/her opinion as you.
Who are you to judge people if they should or should not speak their minds.
The game not being in a good state is an opinion, not fact. I’m enjoying the game just fine. I think ESO and Wildstar are jokes of MMO’s. But hey, that’s just my OPINION.

Nope, it is a fact:

You can keep your opinion though, it’s all yours.
It is not a fact. 4 million sold copies is a bad state, yes… Guild Wars 2 is still the biggest MMORPG in the last 5, maybe ten years. So please don’t come up with things that doesn’t show anything.
Oh, you read the article?
“However, with the title still to launch in Asian territories, traditionally NCsoft’s strongest market, those numbers are expected to climb again soon.”

Interesting little snipped from the article
“However, with the title still to launch in Asian territories, traditionally NCsoft’s strongest market, those numbers are expected to climb again soon.”
I bet a lot of developer time is wisely invested in the China release, with the living story using whatever resources were left to tide us over. Once the China release is done with, I expect to see more content with better QA.
