Skins will unlock by either, equipping, salvaging, destroying, or right clicking and selecting learn skin. Basically there’s no way to -not- unlock a skin.

Have you got a source for that? Just wondering! Because i’d be wary about destroying the mad memoires stuck to a deleted character that’re in my bank!

I suspect it will only apply to characters that are still present and not ones you’ve deleted, analogous to the dye situation.

But I’m just guessing here.

Actually I got a cash grab just to use something I unlocked. The transmutation charge cost is idiotic.

Not too happy about the Transmutation Stones conversion vs. Crystals. While that’s fine for endgame players, anyone levelling is going to be hit much harder for this; the only reason I’ve got any crystals at all is because I bought some, and I don’t actually have that many stones. I mean, if this is going to be “You use one charge for a complete wardrobe change”, that’s fine, but if it’s still going to be one charge per piece, that’s gonna HURT, big time.

So I have different sets of armor and weapons(with different stats) for my Necromancer. What will happen to them after the Wardrobe patch?

Will I still be able to choose the stats I want for my Necromancer? Or I will have to grind again and again those armors to get the desired stat?

Guild Wars 2 is different from other MMOs in may ways, and in some ways it is not. Here is where you went wrong and what you need to fix.
Guild Wars 2 is different in the sense that there is no BiS item for your class. This means people are more or less forced to carry around several item sets at the same time.
But; Guild Wars 2 is NOT different in the sense that our bag space is greatly limited.
These two things conflict with eachother and is by design broken.
While I think the wardrobe is a great idea, I still think it is a fix to something that was broken in the first place and you should not ask us to pay for you to fix that.
Thanks.

Tl;dr

Anet, don’t ask us to pay for you to fix something that is broken.

Armor and the way you equip it will not change. However you will have an additional Wardrobe button where you can change the appearance of what you have equipped. After the patch you’ll just have the option of using those armor models in the wardrobe.

Based off the blog, it appears that all that is being changed is the skins. Actual armor with stats will remain in bank, but their skins will be saved in the wardrobe.

Yes, I suppose you can look at it that way if you’re not interested in the Eternity skin.

Of course, bear in mind that many other players might feel the same way and we end up with lots of Eternities on the TP, lowering prices.

The thing is the reason I have bags absolutely crammed with gear is that I swap around for RP. I don’t have 50 exotics, I have 50 things from apprentice boots on up, and if I’m RPing running a shop counter I’m in plainer clothes than if going out to a fancy dinner. I can swap looks just by changing what’s equipped. And I can do it multiple times in a row to show my looks to others or to illustrate changes to my character during a scene.

Do I now have to pay a charge per item for every swap? Or is this a one-time unlock for a charge after which I can change freely to the “bought” looks?

I dont think you understand how this works. ITS THE SAME IT IS NOW. You pay a charge to put a new skin on ANOTHER ITEM THAT HAS STATS. You can have 50 sets of items still, it will just be easier to add THE SAME SKIN to DIFFERENT ITEMS as they will only cost you a CHARGE instead of having to get the ENTIRE SKIN again.

Its really not that complicated.

If I have the achievements tied to the ownership of the various cultural armor sets, but no longer have the armor due to inventory space requirements; am I not still entitled to have these unlocked once the wardrobe is released? Will this sort of case be retroactively rewarded?

Any response is appreciated. I know this is a very specific case.

So, to make clear then, we finally got the wardrobe we all wanted because we are tired of using up space in inventory and bank for all our multitudes of armor skins and weapon skins. People still complain. We can now make ONE legendary and get the skin on all toons. People are complaining. We get account bound dyes… FINALLY, and people are complaining. ANet gives us something for the double dyes we have. Complain. Cost to “transmute” skin onto another toon… same “price” as it always was, but way more convenient. Complain. Have I covered everything???

actually you will probably still want to keep all those skins, because using them up will lock them to one charachter and you ll have to use charges if you want to use it on a different charachter. Likewise if you want to use a look without losing your old look, you will still need to keep the armor. Also if you wanted different looks with one stat selection you will still need to keep the armor.

The system will be virtually the same except you get to look at more stuff at once, and it keeps track of stuff you may have once had.

I think the new wardrobe system is a step in the right direction. However, it still doesn’t solve the fundamental problem for me: I’m reluctant to change my armor looks because of the cost.

I was hoping that the system would work more like this:

1. An armor piece can be unlocked for the account by placing it in the wardrobe (account bound).
2. Using a transmutation charge/crystal unlocks it permanently for a character (soul bound).

There would still be a use for transmutation crystals and people would feel more encouraged to buy new armor sets in the gem shop. As it is now, I won’t buy armor from the gem shop unless I 100% want my character to have that look for a long time. In fact, I’ll likely continue to horde stones/crystals until a perfect look comes around. So it won’t really change my gem purchasing behavior very much in the long term. In the short term, I might take advantage of the system for a few alts, but that’s it.

Under the system I hoped for, I would be more likely to buy armor and use stones/crystals to satisfy a desire for a complete set and to experiment with. In short term, I would likely use a lot more stones/crystals to unlock armors. In the long term, I would be more open to buying new armor sets to unlock. I believe that this system would have been best for both Anet and the players. So kind of disappointed by this change.

yes, this is the main problem, i think most players are caught on wardrobe and once they see the functionality, will probably be a little less excited about the possibilities, which aside from using popular sets on alts doesnt change much

Yep, this is exactly how I read it; got super psyched, almost went and bought the alternate skins I would swap between, then thought about it, read some posts, and the whole reaction fell flat because for me it’s not any different than what we have now.

I wish Anet would consider changing their minds as it seems like they would get more participants short and long term. In addition, their blog post is somewhat misleading:

“Unlocked skins can be applied to items infinitely (for just one Transmutation Charge), which makes it much less stressful to try out a new look for your character, since you can always switch back!”

should look like

“Unlocked skins can be applied to items infinitely (for just one Transmutation Charge), which makes it much less stressful to try out a new look for your character, since you can always switch back (for just one more Transmutation Charge)!”

I can’t freely change my town clothes that I paid real money for. I literally paid for specific pieces to mix and match to look good. This is garbage.

… You’ll still be able to do exactly as much as you could before, and then a lot more!
You should be happy that you’ve been given the additional and really grand option to use your town clothes (which you mixed and matched so dearly) as actual combat armor as well.

You can’t do that, as you need the whole Legendary to make it count as an actual “Twilight” or “Sunrise”. The skin of any of them wrapped around an exotic, Ascended etc. doesn’t count as the “real deal” in the Mystic Forge.

I still liked having armor be class specific, so no I hate this idea

Nothing has changed about this. Light, Medium, and Heavy armor stays exactly the same, as does the restrictions. If you mean the class-specific starter armor from the Character Creation (Mesmer Mask, Guardian Shoulders), you where already able to use them on other classes with the same armor type

Ah, do you mean that you can’t mix & match with pieces of full outfits? That’s a bit of a shame, but perhaps you can still mix & match if you keep them as Town Clothes, just like before?

I understand that the response to gemstore purchases and that requirement to have the item currently on a character seems to be a NO. However, these items have a proven ownership record in the form of the achievements. Hopefully this is enough of a unique situation to resolve. As I know I am not the only one to have deleted the armor to preserve space (this was before additional bank slots.)

We don’t have a choice in the matter. The odds of any town clothing being unaffected by this patch in some form is next to 0.

I didn’t mean forging Eternity using Sunrise and Twilight skins. I meant what if you actually unlock the Sunrise and Twilight skins by equipping them and then later using the actual weapons to create Eternity… to sell off. Yes, you lose the legendary weapon stats but you are left with free Sunrise and Twilight skins + profit

^ and the skins are what matters anyway, the stat swapping is kinda moot now, as you can get an ascended greatsword of every stats for like 1/3 of the cost of getting a legendary anyway, and now, you get to keep your skins on each, and put individual sigils on each

The cost to transmute a single piece of armor is going to be 7 gold.

125 gems = 5 Transmutation Stone
1 Transmutation Stone = 25 Gems
1 Wardrobe Charge = 3 Transmutation Stones (or 75 Gems)
1 Wardrobe Charge = 7 gold

So to change your entire outfit will cost you 35 gold each time. O_O

Looks right for Stones. For Crystals, it’s about 4g per charge. For Splitters, it’s about 5.6g per charge.

Edit: No, your math is wrong, just not on the per item. 35/7 is 5. There are 6 slots. It’s actually 42 gold to switch an entire set (ignoring backpiece, 49 gold then).

Edit 2: Without backpiece, it will cost 24 to 42 gold through converting pre-existing transmutation items. With backpiece, it will cost 30 to 49 gold through the same process.

But that is what we’ve always been doing…using stones/crystals to apply a new look to our existing armors. Nothing is changing in that regard other than consolidating stones and crystals into a single item, plus you do not need to destroy an item to apply its appearance to another item. This is much better in every possible way over how it was.

Actually, what I’ve been doing is filling up enormous amounts of bag space with armor pieces to use as RP outfits. And my thief has the exact same stat items with 3 skins, Monocle, Hood, and Conquest Helm so I can swap freely between those and still be combat ready, as well as multiple same-stat exotic chests. Swap freely being the key.

So this new system might help with a few things, like making me willing to use my gas mask at last, but the promised inventory space savings are falling far short as I might as well keep everything as separate items so I can alter my look moment to moment as RP requires.

Speaking of the gas mask — what about it, or Mask of the Queen, or other items that currently can be applied to any weight of armor but then get locked to that weight? Will they remain free-for-all in terms of armor weight once in the Wardrobe?

Probably not since you can still sell them as skins where as multiple unlocked dyes are purely redundant. Or are you talking about multiple weapons with the same skin?

I have another question, it’s about legendary weapons skin.
I have eternity now, will I get eternity?sunrise and twilight three skin?
Or I have to make sunrise and twilight again to get skin?

They specifically mentioned you would be getting all three skins as those two are components of Eternity. Same for all the stages of the spinal blade pack.
