Considering that the threads like this one are a direct consequence of the “minimum communication” policy, yes, it is a wonder they still stick to it.

Actions, not words.

You mean why they managed to announce a roadmap back then and never gave us any updates on it for over a year so the community got pretty mad about the silence (understandable).

And then they had the audacity to call the community toxic as a consequence of their major mistakes?

Then change their communication policy dramatically to everyones disadvantage (Arenanet’s revenue suffered from it, I would bet on it) and blame it on the community?

Where does that relate to harmless ironic posts in this thread after the disaster ArenaNet wants to sell us as communication? For almost 2 years now.

They did say it while defending their communication policy. Too lazy to research the article now. And they stated that a consequence of multiple community reactions lead to their change in policy.

What does that have to do with kids? I’m 25 years old.

Saying that the way the community reacted is the reason and saying it’s toxic are completely different things. Did Anet actually use the word toxic, or are you “interpreting” for them?

Deal with it !

Are you really sure , they said :

a)Because the community is TOXIC to us , and they dont +1 in Facebook , we blame them for the lack of transparency ?
Not cool guys , we dont love you !

b) Or because we didnt have time to implnat things (like precursor crafting) and something more eager things shown up , we had to implanted first and postpone some other thing ?
So next time we must avoid telling some things that are not ready to implanted , or talk about them till they are finished ?

What are you talking about? Don’t quote me when you make up random arguments I didn’t bring up. Read my post carefully, think, maybe draw a timeline about what happened and what caused which reaction (publisher and community are the two parties) and maybe respond. Or just leave it.

I’m not gonna review the past 3 years for you to be honest. That’s what happened:

1. They announce a roadmap. They never ever gave updates on that roadmap. After two years they blame a demanding community for not giving any updates on it even though it was their freaking roadmap.

2. Community expects results in the framework of the roadmap. The publisher does not deliver. Does not deliver at all (the roadmap did not only contain Pre crafting). That’s the point when I, as a project manager, would get fired. ASAP.

3. The publisher decides to change its communication policy and in an interview one of the developer justifies that step by calling it a toxic development between publisher and community.

4. State of today (and the past two years): No information. No announcements far ahead which causes kittenstorm after kittenstorm due to unneccesary changes nobody truly wanted for the game. Revenues get damaged too because of changes a lot of people I know do not purchase gems and don’t have any intention to anymore (NPE, gem conversion dilemma, new daily experience). Just examples.

That’s all I am gonna say about that ‘nonsense’. I’m not gonna respond to your provoking posts anymore.

I remember a post by an ANet staffer on this forum back when there was a big thread on ANet’s communication, where one ANet staffer said something to the effect that the forum was toxic to them (or something like that, don’t remember the exact words).

Considering that the threads like this one are a direct consequence of the “minimum communication” policy, yes, it is a wonder they still stick to it.

seriously?

Did Chris Roberts tell the world what his timer was all about when it went online before he announced star citizen to the world?

Does SOE tell the world what features they’ll be talking about at SOE live a month before?

Do you know any company that tells its players what they’ll have in their next expansion a month before said expansion is revealed?

There is a reason why companies pay tons of money to organize big events and that’s to get maximum exposure on whatever they’re going to announce. No one in their right mind is going to reveal what they will be talking about before hand.
So no, some childish comments in this thread (the thread itself isn’t the problem at all) aren’t the result of a lack of communication they’re the result of well childish behavior, I am sorry but I cannot find a better word for it.

For crying out loud all we know is there is going to be an event in a couple of weeks which will announce something and even that is being used against Arenanet.

Even if they were to somehow go against common sense and tell us what they plan to announce do you really expect that will generate constructive comments rather then more snarky remarks?

I honestly dont.

Ardenwolfe was the voice of reason when he said “Can we at least wait and see before airing negative, and sarcastic, comments?”

He was told he has blind faith even though there is no faith in that statement at all.

Some people claim they may post negative stuff because they have the games best interest at heart and some really do but I seriously fail to see how making fun and trying to ridicule something that hasn’t even happen yet is working towards the best interest of the game. Seems to me some comments in this thread are more geared towards trying to sink the game by convincing people whatever announcment they make at the event should be ignored.

its not understandable at all. What if they’re still working on that roadmap, should they tell us every month that ohh we’re still working on that will tell you more next month. Would that make players happy? and who’s to say perhaps they’re touching on that during this very event.

And then they had the audacity to call the community toxic as a consequence of their major mistakes?

Please link to me where Arenanet has stated the community is toxic cause personally I have never saw them say any such thing.

Then change their communication policy dramatically to everyones disadvantage (Arenanet’s revenue suffered from it, I would bet on it) and blame it on the community?

I wonder what the game is suffers from the most if its really the lack of communication or from the actions of some in the community.

1) Plans changes , we dont know what other bigger projects , that have more benefit for the game choosed to create instead
2) Then half the ppl working in the WoW should have been fired , 10 years ina row
3) Publiser = NCsoft . When NCsoft gives th ‘’Red light’’ to Arenanet to stop talking with us ?
Again if we didnt have communination , then we shouldnt have the CDIs (they created a poll back then where we could choose the 3-4 biggers things we wanted to be implanted in the game > the Raid CDI is in 3-4 weeks) , and let them create their own projects
4) I agree , more or less . But some ppl like it , some other not (i like the daily achiv) :P

I think you’re simplifying the situation.

Four years ago (maybe five by now) Anet came out with the MMO Manifesto. Four years later, people are still quoting it saying Anet broke promises, ignoring the fact that it was a) a manifesto and b) the parts they were quoting were open to interpretation or explained by Anet subsequently at the time.

This is one example. Anytime Anet says anything, fans hang on their every word. This fan base is like none I’ve seen for that. More detail oriented.

For example, at one point, Anet quotes they’re going to have precursor crafting early this year…well last year. At another point they say look it didn’t work because of changes we made to the reward system, so we’re back to the drawing board.

But with the exception of a couple of things like precursor crafting, we sort of do have some idea of what we’re getting at least with regard to Living Story which Anet has said was their focus at this time.

You may not like their focus, but they did say it.

When they’re ready with a road map that’s more ironed out than the last one, they’ll share it. There’s zero point in giving this community a roadmap that might change, because even though they said that anything can change in the last road map. a lot of people ignored that line and just focused on the fact that Anet “lied”.

Maybe if this community weren’t so prone to hyperbole, Anet would feel more comfortable talking about stuff that might not happen. But the community is not innocent in this, any more than Anet is.

Anet, in my opinion, has overreacted, but they were still reacting to something.

Thats fine, I will do it for you instead

1. They announce a roadmap. They never ever gave updates on that roadmap. After two years they blame a demanding community for not giving any updates on it even though it was their freaking roadmap.

Jan 2013 they released a road map. July 2013 they gave an update on it.
there were issues with precursor crafting and they gave 2 updates on that:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Is-precursor-crafting-going-to-happen-or-not/first#post2981770

2nd update was 9 months ago:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/archive/crafting/gw2-precursor-recipe-scavanger-hunt-news#post3780700

once again they never blamed the community. Thing is you need to be careful when making accusations. Sometimes people like to interpret what is said their own way and then others quote it as fact.

2. Community expects results in the framework of the roadmap. The publisher does not deliver. Does not deliver at all (the roadmap did not only contain Pre crafting). That’s the point when I, as a project manager, would get fired. ASAP.

This is probably a good example of why they stopped communicating. Yes the roadmap they gave included more then just precursor crafting it also included:
January 2013:
- build daily achievement to drive players to different areas of the world
- continue issuing cosmetic rewards like title, medals and unique skins
- no new gear tiers in 2013
- guild missions
- guesting
- paid server transfers
- remove WvW culling
- add progression to WvW
- WvW win bonuses
- overhaul sPvP rewards
- spectator mode
- leaderboards
- expanded and redesign open world bosses and dungeons
- new achievement types
- improve new player experiance (ohh this was promised in january 2013)
- LFG group
- improve fractals

July 2013:
- improve living story and make it more permanent content
- return of holiday events / SAB
- no new gear tiers
- new skill and new traits
- improved achievement rewards
- progressive rewards for WvW
- improved champion rewards
- bonus rewards for each unique dungeon path per day
- crafting material rewards for specific content
- account wide magic find
- expand crafting to 500
- precursor crafting
- make legendary more useful by having its state interchangeable
- improve pvp rewards
- improved pvp queuing system
- pvp leader boards
- level 0 ingame tutorial
- level 5 and 10 story steps
- limit culling in PvE

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/looking-ahead-guild-wars-2-in-2013/

what wasnt delivered? precursor crafting and the return of SAB. Not just that but precursor crafting is still being worked on as they informed us up to 9 months ago and SAB will return as confirmed by Gaile 3 months ago. yet you state “Does not deliver at all (the roadmap did not only contain Pre crafting).” someone reading that who doesnt play the game will get the impression Anet promise stuff and never deliver a single thing when in fact they’ve delivered all they said they would except for 2 things are still pending but we’re told will be delivered later on. So tell me why is it a good idea for them to promise stuff if in the event they “mess up” a single item people will consider they failed across the board?

3. The publisher decides to change its communication policy and in an interview one of the developer justifies that step by calling it a toxic development between publisher and community.

Link please. Like I’ve shown in point 2 sometimes people get the wrong impression.

Just examples.

announcing far ahead cause baby cats storms too. thing is some people seem to love baby cat storms. As for unncessary changes nobody truly wanted, says who? I enjoy the changes made to the trait system for example. its not perfect (wouldn’t have included map completion and personal story) but its good to have more horizontal progression. Much better then having a new gear tier that’s for sure.

my posts are provoking? your’re making statements without bothering to back a single one of them. I backed all my statement with facts and provide sources.

I seem to recall the precursor thing as being, “absolutely,” in 2013, not last year. Even so I think the given reason for putting it on hold is perfectly valid. The reward system in GW2 is sufficiently poor as to make me want the company to be very careful when implementing any changes. I would much rather they got it right than see another trait change situation, “you guys asked for changes so here is something worse than you had before.”

I wouldn’t mind some updates in the precursor thing though. Its been over a year now.

that’s not calling the community toxic, that’s calling the environment toxic for themselves which is different.

Caffeine is toxic to me cause I am allergic to it, that doesn’t make caffeine in itself toxic.
Same thing here. That person according to what you’re saying simply stated he find the forum more hostile then they can handle. They’re not calling the community toxic.

i call BS on the “no communication due to fear of backlash”.
every online game has a community, with some users more vocal than others. developers always say they work on something X or Y, sometimes they deliver, sometimes they don’t, sometimes they deliver partially or different than what the players thought. game communities react like they always do, sometimes with anger (hint traits hint) and yet… a lot of games made it through that backlash. are we supposed to think that a.net employees have such fragile feelings that every single bad post or comment make them run away from their computer with tears? fact is, there always will be negative responses. the only possible, feasible reason, to justify such a policy is that somebody downright lied to the community, and got busted for it by the community.

as we have seen, the only “backlash” a.net fears is in regard to gem store sales everything else is hardly of any interest to them.

a.net: I will not be buying gems with cash until you fix traits.

Wow that’s some pretty hard spin you got going on there…

Just to fill in the things you missed (probably too dizzy from all that spinning):

“We’ll begin regularly adding new skills and traits to the game for each profession to expand your characters and builds” -NOPE

“We’ll expand all crafting professions to allow them to reach a new milestone: 500 points!” – NOPE

" I can say is you will see a specific way to build precursor items on your way to a legendary." – NOPE

They never said absolutely to anything infact quite the opposite both of those posts include a little disclaimer:
" As always, the content above is subject to change as we test and iterate on these systems."

actually last update on precusors was 9 months ago as far as I know:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/archive/crafting/gw2-precursor-recipe-scavanger-hunt-news/first by Mark Katzback

“We want to let you know that the ability to build your precursor will not be in our upcoming Feature Pack. The way progression and rewards work in Guild Wars 2 have changed quite a bit since we initially talked about that feature, and our main horizontal progression systems are about to get some additional updates in the upcoming feature pack. Because of that, we are looking into several ways to integrate building your precursor into our new updated reward and progression systems we’re working on, which is requiring additional development time and iteration. As always, we’ll share details on this system once it’s far enough along in production we’re ready to discuss it.”

“On top of this, you will also see new legendary weapons and new types of legendary gear in 2013” – NOPE

“As these additional skills and traits are added, they’ll be automatically unlocked and available for competitive PvP just like all existing skills/traits work today.” – NOPE, gotta pay for them.

“we’re building a new comprehensive “level zero” optional tutorial that teaches the core basics of the game” -NOPE… forced, and tedious…

So yeah… a few more than 2 things… and the ones that veteran players most wanted were pretty much all trashed along the way…

What the veterans wanted? Can you give me percentages on that?

Many veterans already have legendaries and don’t care about percursor crafting. I’m working on my fifth.

I certainly don’t care if crafting goes up to 500. It’s nothing but a huge gold sink and I could do without it.

I’m sure many if not most people want more skills, however.

Anyway, things were added to the game that were never discussed. Like the account wardrobe. That’s better for me than anything else on that list.

This veteran wants as many new fully-developed zones as there are old zones, and at least one new race and profession, but preferably two. See also: new weapons, along with new skills for old weapons which can be mixed and matched. Why does every warrior that swings a sword use the same attacks as every other warrior that swings a sword?

Dream a little dream: I also want airship to airship combat as depicted in Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Mars novels. Tyria has the technology — and the ships! Why not?

Interesting that GW2’s Tyria is so very ‘Burroughsian’ in terms of the technologies involved. Specifically, the previously mentioned Mars series, and the Venus series as well. Swords, rifles/handguns, and ships with beam weapons. Science fantasy adventure in the grand tradition of the granddaddy of science fantasy adventure!

The table is a fable.

They never said absolutely

13:37 (not leetspeak, a timestamp.)

As to the update, as mentioned in my previous post I am glad that the system has been delayed (hopefully to get it right).

seem to me like absolutely in this case was referring to having support for precursor crafting not that they’re release it absolutely in 2013.

Transcript:

“the other thing you will see this year is the ability to build precursors. It’s not going to be next week, it will probably be you know as we get closer to the end of the year but we’re absolutely going to have that support so that you can make your own precursor and feel like you’re making progress putting one of those together. Very likely its going to be through crafting we haven’t completely finalized that but I think that’s more then likely where that’s going to drop in. "

still kudos for tracking down that interview its something very hard to do ! I am impressed.

For crying out loud all we know is there is going to be an event in a couple of weeks which will announce something and even that is being used against Arenanet.

We don’t know if they will announce anything, not according to PAX South schedule. It will most likely just be presentation of a new framework, seen after a recap of how Living Story works and has worked in GW2.

Join ArenaNet president and co-founder Mike O’Brien and Guild Wars 2 game director Colin Johanson for an exclusive sneak peek at what’s next in Guild Wars 2 and be among the first to hear how we’re setting up a new framework for how an MMO can grow its universe. The Living World was just the beginning.

I dunno it’s been 18 months since they said it was coming in 2013, and 9 months since they last gave us an update…

I mean the entire game was built in 5 years… they have added staff since then, and it has been 26 months since they first said they were looking into solutions for precursors… They could be in beta of Precursor wars 3 by now if they made an entire new game of it…

They will announce LS v3 and hype it like usual. In december 2015 we’ll view back the year to see we had 2 more mini-maps, each one the size of 1/4 of a normal map, few UI tweaks by the featureless packs and maybe a new world boss.

They are a 350 workers studio that do the same amount of work as a 30 persons team. Even the most basic ftp has way more updates than this game. The only MMO that did so little was wharammer online.

Wow that’s some pretty hard spin you got going on there…

Just to fill in the things you missed (probably too dizzy from all that spinning):

Who’s spinning exactly?

“We’ll begin regularly adding new skills and traits to the game for each profession to expand your characters and builds” – NOPE

YEP:
- New Skill: Antitoxin Spray released with tower of nightmare on october 29 2013
- New healing skills for every profession released on wintersday december 10 2013
- 40 new traits released on april 15 2014

“We’ll expand all crafting professions to allow them to reach a new milestone: 500 points!” – NOPE

Yep
- Armor-smith, Leather-worker and tailor increased to 500 on December 10 2013
- Weapon-smith, Artificer and Hunts man increased to 500 on September 3 2013.

I hope you’re not suggesting that because there are still 2 professions pending the other 6 they did do not count.

" I can say is you will see a specific way to build precursor items on your way to a legendary." – NOPE

correct, but I did say this one is still pending.

“On top of this, you will also see new legendary weapons and new types of legendary gear in 2013” – NOPE

1 Problem.. quote the whole thing dont choose selectively. " I can say is you will see a specific way to build precursor items on your way to a legendary. On top of this, you’ll also see new legendary weapons and new types of legendary gear in 2013." The new legendary weapons is something they intended to build over the new precursor crafting. Since they didnt do that obviously they didnt do the other thing that depended on it.

“As these additional skills and traits are added, they’ll be automatically unlocked and available for competitive PvP just like all existing skills/traits work today.” – NOPE, gotta pay for them.

wait you just said they didnt implement new traits or skills how did that turn into nope the new skills and traits they implemented need playesr to pay for them first all of a sudden? but yes they didnt do it 100% as they said they would then again in that same post they did say " As always, the content above is subject to change as we test and iterate on these systems."

“we’re building a new comprehensive “level zero” optional tutorial that teaches the core basics of the game” -NOPE… forced, and tedious…

I think you missed what the tutorial is, the tutorial is this little pop-up you get like say as shown here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6W_-H049dhE#t=111

Then there is the arrow that tells you what content you need to do etc..

besides even if you want to include the skills gating, and starter hearts simplification in their. What exactly is being forced on you? you can still unlock the skills by playing and you can still skip those hearts if you choose too. Just cause now it takes 30 mins to unlock all the skills instead of 2 minutes it doesnt mean its forced. Besides you already know the game of course every tutorial will seem tedious to you you’re not the intended audience. But more then that how does any of this mean Arenanet didnt implement what they said they would do?

So yeah… a few more than 2 things… and the ones that veteran players most wanted were pretty much all trashed along the way…

Nope still just 2 things.

Which features that veteran players most wanted were pretty much all trashed along the way are you talking about?

hmm airship to airship battles.. that could actually be an awesome feature for GvG I like the idea! 100 points to you sir !

could also be a great update to WvW.. AA turrets, specialized interceptor airships, bomber airships.. Dude that’s really an awesome idea! I am serious, its a great idea!

Its impossible to say whats keeping it there could be a truckload of reasons

from them secretly building an expansion and deciding to make precursor crafting a feature in it to designed it to depend on a reward system of something they have yet to deploy in game.

It could also be they decided to redesign it a few times perhaps because it was too grindy, open to exploiting or simply unfun.

The only thing we know for sure is that so far they havent announced they no longer plan to implement it and said several times that its still coming.

Who’s spinning exactly?

These guys!

Anyway, ‘new framework’. Most curious. And a little worrisome.

Framework: 1. a skeletal structure designed to support or enclose something. 2. a frame or structure composed of parts fitted and joined together.

More systems revamped, maybe? If so, what are some likely candidates?

In the IT world a framework generally refers to a structured way of doing things.

For example a completely fictitious framework to expand the gw2 universe could be something like:

Living story is meant to set the stage while an expansion is being developed. Features packs are meant to address game play related issues in the short term. Tournaments SAB and holiday releases relax the pressure on the living story team allowing them keep up with the schedule. new content / races / dungeons and major features are released through an expansion at the end of the living story that sets the stage.

Another possible framework could be
Small zones, new fractals, new world bosses and world story is expanded through Living story.

WvW and PvP as well as game features are expanded through Feature packs.

New Continents, new dungeons, new Races and Professions will be expanded through a new content delivery mechanism we’re calling the living world update. The living story will set the stage and the living world updates will hence forth be used to deliver large scale content. Whats the difference between living world and living story updates? simply speaking living story is localized, it may increase the size of the universe but it does so locally in the area the story is playing out. IE how Tyria was expanded with silverwastes and drytop. the living world update on the other hand increases the world globally and out first update which we will release TOMORROW hehe I am funny ain’t I ? Will add the continent of Elona as we’ve seen at the end of Season 2 the elder dragon mordremoth decided the magumma wastes weren’t dry enough so the little critter moved the desolation. Its hot there, Dry and as everyone know sulfur is really good for shiny dragon skins.

They’ll be announcing the much anticipated changes to the TP system where you won’t be able to choose what you buy because that would be too confusing for new players, you just walk up to the TP auctioneer and throw gold at them until they give you something. Of course it’ll be part of the much needed RNG system because we’ll never have enough RNG.

“…we’re setting up a new framework for how an MMO can grow its universe.”

ArenaNet: perpetually planning to prepare to iterate big things that may or may not make it into the game.

Well, if they are really working on something like that, its great, problem is what they do and change the name after the release becouse deployed content will not make sense with that name, they did that in the past from living world to living story, altough story is not living either, but straigh forward content and far from being living gameplay since players action wont change the story.

1st April joke, when gw2 receives a “balance” update.

What gets me is:

o They’re like 0 for 5 success rate on the “New, Exciting, Etc.”

o They’re 5 for 5 on kittening off the whole community with the “New, Exciting, Etc.”

o They had a great content delivery system in GW1 but refuse to use it.

o Calling something “An Expansion worth of Content” is an oxymoron. The only thing that’s an Expansion worth of Content… is an Expansion.

o It’s not like it’s only the Forum posters that notice.

So, it looks PAX South will turn out to be another “You don’t need a boxed expansion cuz <insert lame excuse> and we’re here to talk about the next Living Story! er… uh…Living WORLD!” Yeah, I saw the logo too. Sigh… how long are they gonna fiddle around with “New, Exciting, Etc.” until they realize “New, Exciting, Etc.” isn’t working. For a great example look at LS S1 – all that development money and it’s flushed down the drain. Never to be played again. Even worse, it broke Personal Story for new players.

Professional advice from a Systems Engineer: Stop trying to re-invent the wheel. “Back to the Basics” is your friend…

I wouldnt hope for too much. At best it would be another quality of life patch and LS3. Expansion without any infrastructure such as PTR? No 100% “unintentional” leaks about it on twitter, no accidental mentioning it by devs to any gaming magazine in otherwise unrelated interview? No leaked screenshots, concept arts etc? These are staples of pre-expansion hype building in MMO industry ;-)

I’d call it art and defend myself against all comers by declaring any negative responses to be the outcries of ignoramuses, haters of the higher callings and philistines of the worst sorts.

None of you would understand my vision, except maybe a few that would be all like ‘Dude, chicken alfredo rocks, I’ma get some’.
