“…we’re setting up a new framework for how an MMO can grow its universe.”

ArenaNet: perpetually planning to prepare to iterate big things that may or may not make it into the game.

This, two plus years of this, is anyone really surprised that so many people are jaded, apathetic or flat out cynical? I wish I could attend Pax just to see how this will all go down.

Right? Anet made this bed and has to sleep in it. Upon hearing the news of the announcement I was hopeful and excited. But now? Hesitant.

Now if the announcement was, “Join Colin and Mike as they unveil GW2’s first expansion, and find out which continent players will have a chance to revisit 250 years after the defeat of the Great Destroyer.” That alone is enough to get me back on board.

I still predict marketing of content-deliver via LS and absolutely no releases or updates scheduled for 2015 outside of the LS’s and QoL “improvements” should anyone prefer to call what we’ve gotten in two and a half years as “improvements.”

I’d love for this prediction to be way off the mark upon announcement.

But I’m not getting my hopes up at all.

Improvements:
Account Wallet
Magic find removed from gear and account bound now
AP rewards
Account bonuses
Wardrobe
WvW Ranks (and then account wide)
Improved WvW loot
Champs dropping bags
SPVP loot improved
Siege kicking off AFKers
Salvaging made easier….
Culling removed

I think that’s just the tip….

Improvements:
Account Wallet
Magic find removed from gear and account bound now
AP rewards
Account bonuses
Wardrobe
WvW Ranks (and then account wide)
Improved WvW loot
Champs dropping bags
SPVP loot improved
Siege kicking off AFKers
Salvaging made easier….
Culling removed

I think that’s just the tip….

Account wallet- Fixed a problem ArenaNet introduced. Had they not added tons of currencies then it wouldn’t have been necessary.

Magic find removed- Removing choices from the game…yay?

AP rewards- Both good and bad. Good that it rewards achieving things within the game but bad because it’s introduced AP grinding as a major endgame activity.

Wardrobe- I’m sure there are some people with townclothes(iirc) that would like a word with you!

WvW Ranks- Did not improve WvW at all, if anything it hurt it

Improved WvW loot- I guess getting slightly more than nothing is an improvement if only slightly.

Champs dropping bags- The mere fact that you’re clinging to slightly better trash loot as a major game improvement should say something.

Siege kicking off AFKers- Bug fix?

Salvaging made easier- Wasn’t really needed and ultimately excerbated by them tossing too much trash loot at people instead of real rewards.

Culling removed- This is the only thing that I think really improved the game.

If that’s just the tip of “improvements”, lets list the negatives too so we can see if it’s an overall improvement or not!

Ascended tier
Laurels
Ascended armor/weapons through crafting only
Perplexity runes
WvW traps
WvW Runes of Power
EotM- Debateable
3 headed wurm- specifically reward/difficulty
A whole heap of class “balance” changes
SPvP paid tournaments
SPvP maps(skyhammer/unicorn)
Temporary content while endgame is lacking
NPE
New Trait system
WvW seasons- they destroy servers

those are literally the ones right off the top of my head, I’m sure there are tons more as ArenaNet always implements flawed systems that need fixed 2-3 times or they just ignore it and never mention it again.

“We’ll expand all crafting professions to allow them to reach a new milestone: 500 points!” – NOPE

Yep
- Armor-smith, Leather-worker and tailor increased to 500 on December 10 2013
- Weapon-smith, Artificer and Hunts man increased to 500 on September 3 2013.

I hope you’re not suggesting that because there are still 2 professions pending the other 6 they did do not count.

Its worth noting that, “ALL,” is not synonymous with, “some,” or even, “most.” In fact it is completely contradictory. Not, “all,” crafting professions have been expanded, which was the claim, even if some or most have been.

Did they say all profession will be increased at the same time? Most is not synonymous with all true but its a pretty good indication they didnt shelf or abandon the idea. You dont increase a profession just for the sake of increasing a profession level cap they need a reason for it.

To be honest I am not quite sure it would be a good idea to increase those two anyway. Does anyone actually like the idea of ascended food / ascended jewels (that you plug exclusively in exotic items…. hmm)

They may not have said all at the same time but they did say all in 2013, which was the claim you countered by pointing out that they had expanded some/most of the professions.

Personally it wouldnt hurt my feelings if they removed crafting from the game entirely, and I am specifically opposed to the inclusion of ascended crafting both in principle and in implementation.

So now not giving us content is a feature that is actually better… Do you even hear yourself? I think you should take a step back and seriously consider why you think you need to go to such great lengths to defend Anet.

They failed to deliver. Not by a small margin, it has been more than a year since those things were promised. A year in MMO time is a HUGE amount of time. Most MMO’s only live 4-5 years before going into maintenance mode.

You are correct in that they failed to deliver on this one. My answer to this specific question, in this specific context, is yes. It is better that they did not increase ascended crafting.

They failed to deliver. Not by a small margin, it has been more than a year since those things were promised. A year in MMO time is a HUGE amount of time. Most MMO’s only live 4-5 years before going into maintenance mode.

Depends on the content.

not all types of content makes for a better gaming experience.

If they where to add a new gear tier every 6 months that’s as hard to get as ascended gear that would be new content but would its addition make for a better gaming experience? no, personally I’d rather not have such content.

If they created hardcore progressive raids (think fractals where the more you progress the more you need to update your agony resistance) with higher levels dropping exclusive gear (could be even cosmetic) I personally dont like raiding so yet I’d rather they dont add that kind of content.

More specifically ascended food / ascended jewels would raise more the power curve. I personally am already a little unhappy with the inclusion of ascended gear in the game. The only reason I am not totally unhappy about is simply its totally optional and 2 years in I never felt I had to bother collecting it. To be honest the little unhappiness is actually already turning to concern after the idea of raiding has been discussed. I imagine they dont plan to make raids easy, that kind of defeats the purpose of raids. on the other hand that means they have to be tuned for ascended gear cause if they’re tuned for exotics they’ll likely be easy for people wearing full ascended sets. Adding more to that power curve by provided more stat bonuses through food and new more powerful jewels will make the situation worst.

Besides at no point did I say they shouldn’t add content to the game, They don’t need to raise cooking and jewel crafting maximum level to add content to the game. In fact they added two truckloads of content to chef in the past two years an even a few new recipes to jeweler

But fine I’ll bite lets say that delivering 75% of something is as good as delivering 0%.

That still makes the end tally out of the 36 items promised 4 weren’t delivered. IE they delivered 89%

but lets get a step further lets also include stuff that was implemented by that you felt didnt deliver. That would make out of the 36 items they got 6 which they didnt deliver.
So essentially based on your opinion they delivered 84%

how is 16%-11% not a small margin?

Once again talk like this is what makes Arenanet stay silent and not share future plans. No matter how many times they point out this is work in progress and is subject to change unless they end up developing exactly what they said they would exactly the way players expect them to its good as if they had done nothing at all. If they never shared that roadmap today would’d be saying they increased the level cap of 6 professions to 500. But because they did share it we’re essentially considering as if they didnt do anything on the subject?

And we really wonder why Anet thought its better to stay silent?

As for taking over a year to implement all this sure I agree with you a year is a long time especially in MMO context but again not only did they still implement at least 84% of what they promised in that time frame but also a ton of stuff they didnt even mention in the roadmap, its not like they were dormant in the interm and thats not considering the two big projects they were working on in the background that we dont know anything about.

Not interestet in ascended food .. but i really wished i could craft some ascended
rings and earrings, since i don’t play fractals and have a lot of alts, and will not have
enough laurels even in 2 more years to buy all that stuff.

EVERY MMO is awesome until it is released then its unfinished. A month after release it just sucks.
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.

ohh right ascended accessories. for some reason I completely forgot about them. Thats a most valid point. There is content that would warrant jeweler level 500 already you’re right. Hmm wonder why they never added that.

They never said absolutely

13:37 (not leetspeak, a timestamp.)

As to the update, as mentioned in my previous post I am glad that the system has been delayed (hopefully to get it right).

seem to me like absolutely in this case was referring to having support for precursor crafting not that they’re release it absolutely in 2013.

Transcript:

“the other thing you will see this year is the ability to build precursors. It’s not going to be next week, it will probably be you know as we get closer to the end of the year but we’re absolutely going to have that support so that you can make your own precursor and feel like you’re making progress putting one of those together. Very likely its going to be through crafting we haven’t completely finalized that but I think that’s more then likely where that’s going to drop in. "

still kudos for tracking down that interview its something very hard to do ! I am impressed.

I dunno it’s been 18 months since they said it was coming in 2013, and 9 months since they last gave us an update…

I mean the entire game was built in 5 years… they have added staff since then, and it has been 26 months since they first said they were looking into solutions for precursors… They could be in beta of Precursor wars 3 by now if they made an entire new game of it…

I read this and immediate this is what my gut said: they’re completely re-doing crafting like they did to the wardrobe and the wallet.

I have a feeling that this whole thing will be addressed in April and will be announced at PAX. This gives me hope.

I wish I could too I wish we could have someone who is well known on the internet setup an interview with them and then hit them hard with the questions we’re all wondering. What happened? Why did you stop developing this game? Why do you consistantly update things that no one cares about or has ever had an issue with? When can we expect that you’ll fix the inherent problems thousands have posted about in the forums? When will these problems be fixed finally or will they continue to sit on the backburner? I’d love to see their reaction to that because the media we have right now is a joke, for example, if one of these gaming sites actually asked some of these hard hitting questions early on we would have had more action for sure!

Make a new character, and in the intro that’s really all you can do.

No utilities. No weapon skills 2-5. No profession skills, F1-F4 do nothing.

I guess you can heal, but apparently you can’t be killed in the intro.

Its not something I’d want to do. It was more a poke at the NPE. (hence why the ONLY way I’ll make a new toon now is a new race or class, and yes I did have tried the wonderful NPE)

first , I seriously doubt that the only spot they could get that was available was at the main stage aka the place where most people are focusing on and everyone who is there would love to be on .
When i think ’ getting the only spot available " i imagine getting placed at a rickity little stage in the farthest corner of the backside parking lot :p

Secondly , if this is simply the announcement of S3 of living story which continues in the same fashion kitten or another feature pack ,why then is it not done via a YT video or an article as they have been doing now ?
Why do they feel the need to have the PRESIDENT OF ARENANET and Collin there to anounce it at PAX up on the Main stage for over 90 Minutes ?

If it was just the venue alone you’d have a valid point but there is also the 1 1/2 hr time slot they got.

Everyone else with the exception of Penny arcade have just 1hr slot. Some even have just 30 minutes slot.

Unfortunately I think they are only going to talk about their big success with the living story and how other MMO can cash in on this type of limited content release scheme. I do injoy the living story’s but I have to agree they are to short when they can be completed in a few hours. In my case do to real life and my limited playing time, it takes me a couple of days to complete by then it still leave me empty till the next chapter come out. I agree this game need an expantion but I don’t think this is going to happen, I hope I’m wrong!

What I do know is what they’re saying on the forums about it. Which is … nothing. No “You’ll want to be at PAX South! Make plans now!” or anything. It’s only a couple of weeks away, you’d think they’d be talking it up to us … if it was aimed at us. But what if it’s not?

PAX is a very large gathering of gamers, many of them not GW2 players that ANet would love go grab. So, they do what they can to gather a large group of non-GW2 players and do a sales pitch. They have 90 minutes to fill.

  • 10 Minutes: Introductions of who they are and what the Guild Wars franchise is.
  • 20 Minutes: Talking about the basic game, and what makes it different than most MMOs. The 5 races, personal story, active combat, crafting BIS gear and so on all go here.
  • 30 Minutes: Talking about the Living World story. Both how it’s done, and how they’ve improved it during the time its been running. Scenes from previous chapters are shown, plot is somewhat explained, and hints at where it’s going to go are given.
  • 30 Minutes: Talk changes to how they’ve improved the game “beyond the Living Story”. They sell the PvP contests they’ve had, the expansion into China (yes, they can make that sound like a good thing), and so on. Talk about the NPE and how it’s an improvement for the players new to the game and teaches them the basics (supposedly). They can even cover the trait system changes, saying something like: “In our old system, traits were unlocked by just going to a vendor and paying gold. That was pretty dull, and the players wanted something more. We listened, and now you unlock traits by doing things in the game world. Doing specific events, or exploring the game world at large will unlock traits as you actively play.”

And there’s your 90 minutes on a big stage. What do the current players get out of it? Nothing, but it’s not aimed at us.

I’m not saying that’s what WILL happen, just what MIGHT happen. It’s bad enough when ANet can’t live up to their own hype, but they don’t seem to be trying to hype this one to us. Take that as a warning, and lower expectations. If we do get something big, then it will be a pleasant surprise instead of something that almost lives up to expectations.

Might want to mix those up a bit… there is pretty much 100% chance that vertical rows 2 and 5 will happen in the first 10 minutes of the presentation lol.

Dear ANet writers,
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

This. The LS in its nature is very new to MMO’s so its highly possible that they would only hype it up for the masses. Maybe a possible season 3 announcement with a cinematic intro?

How is the Living Story any different, beyond its release schedule, than, for example, the ‘Issues’ that City of Heroes/Villains used to get?

Clarification: now that it’s no longer temporary, that is.

What gets me is:

o They’re like 0 for 5 success rate on the “New, Exciting, Etc.”

o They’re 5 for 5 on kittening off the whole community with the “New, Exciting, Etc.”

o They had a great content delivery system in GW1 but refuse to use it.

o Calling something “An Expansion worth of Content” is an oxymoron. The only thing that’s an Expansion worth of Content… is an Expansion.

o It’s not like it’s only the Forum posters that notice.

So, it looks PAX South will turn out to be another “You don’t need a boxed expansion cuz <insert lame excuse> and we’re here to talk about the next Living Story! er… uh…Living WORLD!” Yeah, I saw the logo too. Sigh… how long are they gonna fiddle around with “New, Exciting, Etc.” until they realize “New, Exciting, Etc.” isn’t working. For a great example look at LS S1 – all that development money and it’s flushed down the drain. Never to be played again. Even worse, it broke Personal Story for new players.

Professional advice from a Systems Engineer: Stop trying to re-invent the wheel. “Back to the Basics” is your friend…

Thanks for that link!!!! +1

Clarification: now that it’s no longer temporary, that is.

It’s more akin to the Signature Story Arcs they were doing before the game was killed. An ongoing story in arcs, with a few missions each time a chapter was released. Free if you were an active subscriber, or for purchase if you were not. We never got to see the end of the second one, but the first one was impressive and the second was off to a good start.

Comparing the two makes me wonder, are Rytlock and Caithe about to play the same roles that Statesman and Sister Psyche played in “Who Will Die”?

There are the achievements to consider then and personally I also enjoy playing them with different professions see how that feels. The achievements themselves can be truly hard and some take days to conquer. Not just that but amazingly they have some worth while rewards now. A couple of days to a week to earn an ascended trinket that would other wise take about a month to earn is a good deal!

That being said if talking about the success of the living world is all they want to do why go this expensive route? They did that before through press releases and blog posts.

Just watched this (was retweeted by GW2 twitter, though without the starting time)- http://youtu.be/GWftbufww3M?t=25m10s , and if they are correct, that the hall this panel is in is the biggest, then this must have some kind of really big announcement.
Or it could wind up being the next biggest disappointment.

It’s always possible that they took that stage because that was the only one open when they asked for a spot.

Please people, remember that it’s not ANet hyping it up this time. It’s the players. Go in with an open mind, but low expectations.

If it was just the venue alone you’d have a valid point but there is also the 1 1/2 hr time slot they got.

Everyone else with the exception of Penny arcade have just 1hr slot. Some even have just 30 minutes slot.

That suggests its likely bigger then hey season 2 was awesome so we’ll do a season 3

but yeah we’ll have to wait and see. Likely still doesnt make it a certainty

I’m sure the time space is just how much willing a company will/can pay for the amount of time they want/need. I’m not sure I’d look into the length of the panel vs other company’s panel(s).
As I don’t pay attention to the whole esport/pvp tournies, can anyone confirm there isn’t going to be some kind of esport/pvp thing going on during it? Maybe thats why it’ll be so long? Cause they’ll stream a match or two?

No doubt about that, but I dont think renting the main theater is cheap. Unfortunately I couldn’t find any numbers but i did find an indie developer who shared some of his expenses.

Renting a small 100sq feet booth on the 6th floor was $1,300, 3.5k watts of electricity was $220 and renting wired interent cost a massive $3,500. Yep renting the main theatre is not cheap most likely.

Not at Pax South as far as I can tell.

There is a tournament planned for pax east but thats in march.
I doubled check cause you made a good point just in case there may be qualification matches during that time and in fact there are qualification matches on 4,11,18,25 january. The panel is happening on the 24th so no E-sport Presentation is very much unlikely.

To be honest I dont see something like that fit the description of the panel anyway which is “exclusive sneak peek at what’s next in Guild Wars 2 and be among the first to hear how we’re setting up a new framework for how an MMO can grow its universe. The Living World was just the beginning.”

Even die hard supports for the game would riot if they fit a couple of esports matches in there

The panel is called beyond the point of no return which is the name of the last episode in season 2 of the living story. None of what you mentioned presents anything actually happening beyond season 2. Now true that doesnt mean they cant do an intro by explaining where they’re coming from… after all like you correctly stated this isnt something thats going to be experienced by fans, there will be players there who might never have heard of gw2 much less are familiar with it. But still no intro is going to be longer then your main subject is it?

Thing is from where I am standing the biggest issue Gw2 has is people are convinced it just lacks updates. I cant count how many times on forums of other game’s I’ve seen people criticize B2P and F2P models on the bases that without a sub you dont get any updates and more often then not people sight gw2 as an example of that. I am sure Arenanet know about that and know that currently its their Achilles heel.

If the theory that living story is something they do in between large content updates (we’re talking expansion here or at least actual expansion content so Continents with their own living story, new playable races / professions etc…) It will just be Huge… suddenly the example used of lackluster updates becomes the king of updates. I mean it may be just me but LS + Expansion would literally be the perfect content mix. Something that for a lot of people is pretty engaging to do nearly every 2 weeks before a huge content drop would make this literally the only MMO where you always have something new to do.

Hype is kinda bit dangerous… I know what you’re saying and you’re right they havent even announced the event themselves yet. That however could be a strategic move. The second after you hype something is starts loosing its power and if they announce this just a week before they’ll get the maximum effect from the media. Under the circumstances that may make a lot of sense!

That being said there are a lot of could and maybes here I totally understand that and at the end of the day we’ll have to wait and see. No one can exclude this maybe nothing and like it has happened and even often players might have got more excited then they should .Entirely possible, has happened before many times (truth be told Anet dont often hype anything its generally the players that do that for them )

Its just its been 2 years and 1/2 we know there are a ton of developers working on stuff that so far is unaccounted for since at the very least January 2014. The no big content updates has reach a critical mass clearly. Season 2 is essentially over. Main Theatre, 90 minute panel, Includes company’s President. Title of panel is essentially what happens next just using nicer words. Things point at this being what we have been waiting for. Could still be nothing, it just doesnt seem likely that it is nothing. We’ll see.
