Game Updates: Guild World Events, Megaservers, WvW
And actually that just brings me to my overarching problem with megaservers. It feels like the only compromise that’ll be reached with this system is “It’s not that bad.” It’s worse than it was, but I guess it’s acceptable. For example: before megaservers I could enter a city full of RPers. Now, with megaservers (properly working) I can enter a city full of more people, with most of them being RPers. But some of the RPers are split off (just some). Even if only a small segment is separated, that’s still worse off than it was originally. And in the case of cities, there’s no gain for that tradeoff. There is no gameplay benefit to having the cities filled to the brim. It just makes them look more busy, which I guess is a gain for ArenaNet? Maybe for some players in a low pop server, it’s a gain to have more people in your cities (even if you don’t do anything with them). But does it REALLY matter to you? If you really thought about it, do you care THAT much to see extra people in your city? Because I’ll tell you right now: we (RPers, High Population servers) sure as hell care that we’re getting split up in our own cities. It’s drastically effecting our gameplay experience in a negative way.
I think that cities currently are too populated. I like the idea of a single player hub like Lion’s Arch that the server community could go to. They could have that single hub reserved for that server.
I think that with cities they should be mainly reserved for servers except when the average population of a city reaches a specific threshold then throw that player in with the least populated shard. Reason for this is I see the argument of being in a populated city. However….. I also see the argument of a population being so big that it kicks people on your server onto another shard.
But then I honestly think that issue is only present on the Unofficial RP servers. So perhaps tweaking the system so that if the population is above a specific percentage that it then reserves the shard just for that server. The system may indeed be doing that. We don’t know as we don’t get a overflow warning anymore. I know I used to get one in LA in Tarnished Coast whenever I guested there.
Perhaps they could add a queuing system to where the system says. “I would have liked to place you on a different shard but it’s population is too full right now for me to do so would you like to queue up for that shard?” I would not however call it overflow.
Watched some videos on this megaserver stuff… my god what have they done. I mean, champions and open world encounters were a complete and utter joke to begin with, but now with megaservers every DE and champ should just lay down and spit out loot like a pinata. Theres zero challenge in this game now. Theres no risk of failure, no risk of dying, no fear of anything bad happening to your character.
Hey Arenanet!! THATS FUN RIGHT?!?! No fear of death in your game = fun?
Serious sad state of affairs. Currently have no hope for this game.

Yea, while they’re at it they may as well pass out free legendary weapons for all, YAY WE ALL GET A METAL, WE’RE ALL SPECIAL

I had a problem with SB last night (see post a few pages back) but no biggie. I like seeing a lot of people in-game and I like having the dynamic events populated again. This is preferable to server merges, in my opinion. Once they work the bugs out of keeping parties together, my particular gameplay will be improved. I can’t speak for the other complaints but I’ll take this over empty maps.

This IS servers merging. Even if not physically, the result is identical. The thing is they didn’t give two kitten about why players chose X server over Y server. And now, it’s a huge and total mess.

This is a Server Merge. It’s just that the Server they merged us all with is Overflow.
The megaserver is a disaster for the larger guilds that hold guild events for their members. These players and guilds are being punished even if it is not on purpose for having a good community due to the megaserver spreading them out and away from one another. This system also punishes players who cannot afford high end gaming systems due to lag, skill lag, crashes etc. I am sorry but in no way is the mega server a good way to deal with low population servers. As a company you don’t punish your 80% customers to please the 20% doing so is financial suicide. If you need to cut server space you close the smaller under populated servers and give them the option for free transfers to the higher populated server of their choice. Or you implement the mega server to combine the low populated servers only. Also don’t ignore your customers by not answering questions about your companies decisions. When as a business you start doing what has been done with this update you become a company like sears or kmart and head toward bankruptcy.

I wonder if each of the threads will hit one thousand replies each, before anyone bothers to reply.
Megaservers:
There have been multiple issues with people I know trying to get into the same map location as their friends, guildmates, and parties, and not being placed in the same main instance. All of the people are also on the same Home World (Tarnished Coast).
It is causing a lot of issues when trying to do Guild Missions or Events with people. We have to all log out of the game and back in and cross our fingers that we will be put in the same map together. This is fairly ridiculous.
Using “join party member” does not always work, either. Not if the map is too full, which it is most of the time.
I have also been hearing of European friends who are english speaking, being thrown into maps with people who only speak other languages. There is nothing these people can do about this and they are on the verge of quitting the game.
Please fix this!!! Or give us the ability to say where we want to be put!
You know that crazy biotoxin that Scarlett unleashed and plagued Tyria with after we killed her? It was megaservers.
Okay Arenanet, I solved the riddle! You can heal the land and remove the curse now.

I know who we need for this.
TRAHEARNE, HERE IS YOUR CHANCE TO REDEEM YOURSELF IN THE EYES OF THE PEOPLE!
I think an easy way for anet to let us get into the same megaserver as our guildies is to add a Join In option on the guild panel when you are in the same zone as a guildie, it would allow guilds get more than just 5 people into the same zone easily.

I bought a server transfer a few months ago. Now that we have megaservers, I feel that I wasted my money.
I don’t play WvW. I transferred because I was sick of the jerks on my previous server and wanted to get away from them. So, I guested around until I found a server with a really positive and casual PVE-based community, which was exactly what I was looking for.
Now every time I’m in the cities I’m crowdsurfing on hundreds of people I don’t know, some of which are the very people I paid money to get away from.
Thanks megaservers. -.-
Another fun megaserver story:
I was in a zerg of well over 100 people running Temple of Grenth. Because the zerg was so thick, my framerate plummeted and my client crashed.
So, I’m not worried – There’s is ample time to protect Jonez and get my chest…
But no. When I log back in, I’m on a different server entirely, with absolutely no way to get back. The temple has already been completed here, so I won’t get my chest, or even event completion.
Thanks megaservers. -.-
I would like to say that I have a lot of disdain for the new mega-server. The game feels way too crowded now and the level of harassment is higher. I am not enjoying the changes that have been made with the leveling system as well. Leveling a character now is not really an option to me anymore. With the ridiculous requirements to get traits. What truly new player has enough gold to buy all the traits if they can’t unlock Frostgorge Sound at level 30. Either way it’s mostly the Mega Server that is driving me up the wall.

What he said.
I just started my 22nd character and I don’t want to be told which maps to do and in what order just to unlock my traits. I have two slots open, but no traits to use.
In Queensdale and Kessex Hills map chat was chaotic with six or more languages and several “trains” running all over the place. Last night I went to Tequatl and it was no better than Queensdale.
I can’t see anything positive coming out of this. I chose my home server and that’s where I want to be.
Roll back to April 14th and start over again.
And you may quote me on that.
22 characters and you aren’t interested in trying something a little different? oi vay…
I’m LOVING Megaserver.. Cursed Shores was a huge blast for the second night in a row (and I’m used to Blackgate populations.)
Earlier, i had a really nasty experience i would like to share with you guys, as i’m in a lot of RAGE right now!
I have been playing GW2 since the beta. And on a daily basis, as there were days when my guild was doing events, and of course RP (Piken Square).
During that time, from day 1 until the megaserver, i’ve been running the game on High settings, getting 57 – 60 FPS. Everything was normal, and my GPU was getting a temperature around 82 – 87 Degrees Celcius, which considering my GPU is fairly normal.
Since the megaserver popping into the game, i had halted all my leveling/PvE activities, due to zerg simply infesting everything. But heck, i like the game… So i decided to get my settings to low (anything else isn’t viable while leveling now) and give my Engineer some levels. She’s not THAT high (level 23), so i decided to take her to Wayfarer Foothills for some additional (and casual) leveling.
My path led me to the grawl cave in the valley, where the Corrupted imp spawns, and the event had just started… So i went in. About 5 seconds later, a horde followed, dropping my FPS to 29… on low settings… The skill spamming was a nightmare, and it was almost impossible to see my character, or even move around……..until my GPU temperature monitor started beeping, for the first time since i got my PC… The GPU had exceeded 106 degrees Celcius.
The last thing i was able to see, was a massive stuttering on my screen, as if a faulty video was playing, and then my GPU simply shut down, causing me to lose the signal. About 2 seconds later, the PC lost power, and a smell of burning chips filled the air. Megaserver had almost fried my gaming rig.
Oh, and.. before you start saying things about my PC being faulty, i run games a LOT heavier than GW2, and on high settings, without having any issues, or overheating problems.
So i said it once, i’ll say it again : ArenaNet, the megaserver isn’t working properly. Either FIX the GODkitten thing, or get rid of it, until it’s bug free and working! The first thing you must, not need, must do, is drop the instance population limit. I have no plans to lose my 2000+ Euros PC simply cause you decided to throw an early alpha feature on our heads.

When I read announcement about Megaserver I was worried about it. It had to change all aspects of the game I enjoyed. But the reality after patch is much worse. I don’t want to repeat all those things which are in previous comments (Boss schedule, zerg, guild missions, language, wp, different instances, etc.).
I found one positive thing on the Megaserver. It changed my willingness to play from day to day and it returned me to the real life. I’m not leaving the game at all, because I like my guild mates and the game itself. But I don’t want to spend so many hours a day in current game as before. One hour for daily (reduced) and 1-2 bosses are enough and I have a time for other activities.
Thanks Anet, GJ.
Please, change the World Bosses Schedule!!! I can’t do Tetqualt any more!!! Are you kidding me? Why always at the same hour??? I have to work…. I’m in a small guild….

Agreed. Tequatl, Karka Queen, and Triple Trouble need to be active at least 6 times a day, not 3.
megaserver is good, but they just need to reduce the number of players per map instance a bit.
start with 10% reduction from current cap, and then tweak it from time to time.
Archeage = Farmville with PK
I just hope the gaming press picks up on all this megaserver rage and Anet/NCSoft get vilified for doing this.
This was a blatant server merge that went horribly wrong. I suspect many will leave this game with a very bad taste …

I imagine this whole Megaserver experiment is going allot better on American servers then it is on European Servers. Although i did main a International server it was an International-English. I now end up finding myself with Germans and Spanish people who barely speak English (if any at all). Organising larget scaled events has become nearly impossible.
We failed several Guild Bounties because members would constantly be put in a different megaserver. And sometimes this junk would even happen if you where in the same PARTY!
The Megaserver did the exact opposite of what it was trying to do, on European servers annyway.
Also perhaps a less important note, but i miss seeing people that i used to recognise, the server turned from a small little pub, with people and faces you know to a big blaring disco where you know no one, cant understand some people and just feel awkward and out of place.
some people mentioned that a good compremise could be to revert cities back to non-megaserver states. I’l agree with that comprimise because i doubt Anet is going to change their mind on Megaservers at all and instead they’ll put their fingers in their ears pretending they cant hear us untill we stop complaining, or leave.
Went to a megadestroyer event tonight.
Pre-patch, I easily had 40-60+ FPS during a world boss fight, even with 30-40+ people there.
Now, I’m lucky if I get above 10 at mega. Still fine on some others, but there is a noticeable FPS drop pretty much everywhere since every kitten boss has 100+ people at it. My computer is pretty decent, so I feel bad for people who are running GW2 on low-end machines. Most bosses are probably completely unplayable for them now.
Not that it wasn’t totally fun sitting at 10 FPS, not ever having to dodge because he barely got any meteor attacks off (afk auto-attacker mode, go?), and not getting a champ box from him since he died in the lava. Oh, and that’s in addition to the constant bickering in map chat about events and bosses and whatever else people feel like picking fights about at that point in time.
Yes, my playtime has definitely been enriched by the implementation of this monstrosity.

Well, on those Mega-Servers I was I found one person saying he/she likes it. The rest was not all to happy with that system. Most people seemed rather confused instead of cheerfull.
I have spoken to many guildies who are fed up of the current world boss spawn schedule (cannot make major events like TEQ or meet the same bosses each day), low FPS (due to zergs: 10 FPS on high end rigs) as a result of the megaserver.
The bit where things have improved is limited- a few more people in zones (I mean a few !) without any world bosses or champions assisting some people doing mapping events.
The concept of the MS is fine as an idea- but has not nearly worked out as well in practice.
Many new players in-game are not even aware what world bosses are even after this update. Now with the limited spawns – the education of these players is even more limited and they will not see any problems or issues with these items.
Forum users tend to be more informed and may have many more hours invested in the game than new players starting out.

Seriously, how much more time A-net requires to give us a decent answer about all this? Even high end PC’s don’t manage to enjoy the game to it’s fullest with the megaserver on. Was it really necessary to put every server into a grinder and create a mush of of what used to be the community?
So these are my questions, i simply “ask” someone from A-net to come forward and answer them.
- Cities do NOT have PvE content, why are they added to the megaserver?
- Low level areas were ALWAYS full of people, why are they added to the megaserver?
- Guilds kept people together, why are they chopped to pieces by the megaserver?
- Friends lists kept friends together, why are they crippled by the megaserver?
- RPlayers chose a world to be able to safely and freely RP together, why are they torn apart by the megaserver?
- World and Dynamic Events were enjoyable, why have they’ve turned into a collection of zerg swarms by the megaserver?
I don’t appreciate having my GPU fried each time i dare to log into the game and try to level up my characters. I don’t appreciate having to stay in one spot “spamming” the 1st skill over and over, or struggling to get a target while everything dies in 1 second either.
I heard somewhere that they said that WvW will remain as is, as it wouldn’t be WvW without the servers. I’ll simply reverse this claim, simply saying that there’s no GW2 without our home servers. You want variety and more people in some areas? Add a feature that allows the player to choose where to go, if the players in his home world instance are below 40.
You know, A-net? If someone out there added a “megaserver” to their game, doesn’t mean that every company in the world has to copy it. Some things are better left untouched. I said it before, i’ll say it again : Go out there, and do some research about how megaservers work, and then we can talk…

Maybe there is no answer, and they think that all this hype will eventually end, and we’ll say something like “Oh well, the game’s still there, we’ll get used to it being broken” in the end…
Not, gonna, happen.

I’m referring to how they are corralling all the discussion about the mega servers into one easily ignored location.
Oh, don’t say that I came from another mmo where its devs/moderators were either overly secretive or very disrespectful when they spoke to us (most of the time we were completely blanked though), meaning a lot of players got disillusioned with the state of the game. I logged in to that game after a year and could not see one familiar face anywhere. When I found Guild Wars I was so happy about how anet communicated and chatted in their forums and acted like friends and fellow players instead of like self-appointed gods.
If what you say is true it would be awful. I’ve probably been fangirling anet a bit because they’ve been such a breath of fresh air to me, but to think they’d ignore all these unhappy customers would be really upsetting. The lack of response from them here after all these posts does make me feel uneasy though…
OK, done. /Fangirl off Hehe

Why all the complains? Help me to understand.
Personally, for me the game finally feels alive, there are people on all zones, unlike before when I could have played for hour on FA and not run into a single person.
Server communities? I don’t care for them, I have my guild, that’s my community.
The only issue I have is that major cities have way too much people and it slighly affects my frame rate. Then again, it’s nice to finally see people in DR, it was always better than LA in my opinion.

So is it safe to say that the majority of people are not huge fans of megaservers? Good intentions, bad idea?
Not really.
Not even everyone on these forums agree that it is bad. These forums are a minority of the actual player-base, and based on what I have seen in game, there are not as many people there having issues with the MegaServer as there are here.
A lot of people that are unhappy with megaservers are not posting about it, sadly. In my main guild of about seventy people, no one so far is happy about it and several have already left the game. To some, cutting your losses and moving to a new game is less emotionally draining than repeatedly arguing into thin air, which is what it feels like we are doing when we have thread after thread of complaints without any dev input or acknowledgement that they are paying attention.
With the loss of our communities, one of GW2’s biggest strengths, there is just nothing in this game that other games cannot provide.
I have a guild of 160 and have yet to talk to a single person who doesn’t like the megaserver. Not one.
Well except for a few of us who love it.
I have a guild of 160 and have yet to talk to a single person who doesn’t like the megaserver. Not one.
I am in a multi-server guild of 1000+ and not one person I have spoken with likes megaserver. Not one.
Why don’t you guys just stop playing this game. Do what I did and walk away? Its the last straw. I will not be back until megaservers are gone and they invest time and money into a real system that gets people into lower populated zones.
Megaserver probably cost a pretty penny. Arenanet is not going to revert changes, or make changes enough, to fix the major issues. And I do not think they have the time or manpower to squash most of the issues in a reasonable amount of time. You will probably be waiting months on end. Arenanet is too heavily vested in the idea that you will not see them doing any sort of rollback. Very similar to the enormous outcry when ascended items were announced in November 2012…such an outcry that they held an AMA for it. And they did nothing but push through the angry mobs and continuned to release ascended gear. Why will this time be any different?
So not a lot will change. A few tweaks that might make some folks happy. But I do not see earthshattering changes on the horizon that will yield most of you happy. At the very least, with megaservers around, you will ALWAYS be playing with people from another server. Theres zero way of getting around that.
Why waste more months of your time complaining in this thread when arenanet will bide their time, wait for the mobs to quiet down, and then announce their next game breaking “upgrade”. They are already locking threads, and this post will most likely be removed which is clear indication that while they welcome our opinion, any STRONG opinion is not welcomed…any strong opinion that makes too much sense, or that points out the facts of history will be removed.
I think many people won’t give negative opinions in a public map chat, including myself, because the people that like it are more vocal and likely to troll you for it. A forum is a place where people can write longer explanations as to why they dislike an aspect of the game and can actually discuss it at length.
Good point. I honestly have never once expressed an opinion about changes to the game (positive or negative) in map chat. Besides the fact that people will probably troll you, I don’t really feel it’s the place to do it. Map chat is for coordinating stuff and finding people to play with, imo.
Another thing, I think, is that it’s a lot harder to pick up sarcasm in map chat, because usually you are going to get shorter or interrupted comments. “I LOVE the new MegaServer!” could be completely sarcastic or completely genuine. Hard to know without context, and probably most people are going to assume the writer aligns with his/her personal viewpoint. Often I’ve logged into the middle of the conversation where I am curious what the beginning was but you only see what transpires after you log in. In the forums, you can see the histories of people’s posts, and folks can take the time to explain themselves.
Also, if the forums can seem skewed due to multiple posts by the same person, this is true by x1,000 for map chat. That same guy who loves or hates something might express the same opinion on many different maps on many different names with his 15 characters. Lots of comments, but only one person actually making them.
Finally, presumably you will get more comments in map chat from people playing, which potentially would mean the folks who are happier with the changes. People who are happily playing AND people who are frustrated come to the forums, so from that perspective you get a better mix of written communication here. I know I personally am not logging in as much, so you’re not going to see me comment on anything in game!
Therefore I don’t think map chat is really a good indication of how the community feels. Besides the ideas expressed in the forums, only ArenaNet can really tell if players have been logging in less or more, or view the discussions in guild chat, party chat, and whispers where people talk about stuff to their friends. That’s the real indicator.
Love this patch, especially the new wardrobe system, and I’m getting quite a bit more mileage out of that Mad King outfit now.
My suggestion is aimed to please:
- Pro-megaservers
- Anti-megaservers
- ANet
Does not please:
- language barrier problems. I think that there can be a different solution while megaservers + this suggestion existing.
There are two suggestions:
1. Lion Arch, if ever restored, will be the server only hub. I am okay with that since the community I ever see is only in LA.
2. Rent-able maps.
Cost 2000 gems per day. Each server cannot have duplicate copy of the map that is unlocked. Yes, it is expensive. It is meant for the guild to work together to unlock the map for an event.
It also cost 7000 gems to have all the maps unlocked per day. It is meant for the community to work together to unlock all maps.
Why?
- $$$ for ANet
- Community things
- Good reason for megaserver to exist.
4x Necromancer, 3x Mesmer, 4x Guardian, 4x Thief, 4 Revenant
If they were to charge for private maps there would be a huge uproar from the community on how ArenaNet purposely broke the game with MegaServers just to sell private maps in the gemshop as a solution.
People are being over-dramatic of the actual issue, sort of like what happened when fractals came out and how swamp fractal was impossible for pugs.
I find nothing wrong with the mega-servers at all. It is nice to be in Orr and ACTAULLY see people besides when the Temple events are going on.
No to paying for map unlocking – that really does make the game P2W. That is asking for trouble.
No to renting maps.
Not good ideas at all. Let’s wait until the mega-servers really are in full swing before doing anything.
There is no such thing as pleasing everyone!
While I understand why the megaserver system would be nice, I still wish we went back to the old system. Not that I expect this to happen even with the amount of feedback against the megaserver system.
I’m just a silly role player, online to write some stories. Kind of hard to do that though when there’s more and more trolls and griefers. Not kidding either, I feel like all our events or rp sessions get interrupted with trolls.
Not to mention, the population really raises chances of crashing and overall lag. My game has gotten frozen for many minutes at a time whenever there’s a lag spike which I experience more and more now.
Did gw1 have major issues with their instance system? I know it was a similar sort of huge server system there…
As far as those saying that they’re leaving because of this update, seriously, just leave without complaining. There’s no need to say such things for all to hear. Leave quietly. (Neither is it ever effective in trying to persuade anyone to do anything).
Why don’t you guys just stop playing this game. Do what I did and walk away?
Because some of us actually made friends and created communities and just don’t want to leave everything behind.
Most of the people posting here love the game and take time to give constructive feedback to Anet to try and make it better..
That said, my opinion is Megaservers are a good idea, the issue is though that they implemented it way too fast with it not working properly. I don’t want them to take it away, since obviously its not going to happen cuz of the money that has been put into it. But as someone stated uptop, cities can benefit from staying on “home servers” (WvW recruitement?) and they should get things right when it comes to get people from the same guild/party on the same map.
I would add though that the language barrier in europe is one of the most fustrating things for some players (and i wonder on Anets thoughts behind that..)
Also Anet, next time you add some option that blocks chat from other languages…plz send an in game mail to everyone explaining the situation….

Why don’t you guys just stop playing this game. Do what I did and walk away?
Because we some of us actually made friends and created communities and just don’t want to leave everything behind.
Most of the people posting here love the game and take time to give constructive feedback to Anet to try and make it better..That said, my opinion is Megaservers are a good idea, the issue is though that they implemented it way too fast with it not working properly. I don’t want them to take it away, since obviously its not going to happen cuz of the money that has been put into it. But as someone stated uptop, cities can benefit from staying on “home servers” (WvW recruitement?) and they should get things right when it comes to get people from the same guild/party on the same map.

Time and time again they put stuff into the game that isn’t tested. At all. There are still bugs from closed beta. Its unacceptable for a developer to strive to push the envelope still, with so many unaddressed issues in their game. They want to be the first at everything and faster than everyone, without properly thinking things through and properly testing things. We are their QA department, which is just horrible practice for a developer. If they really practiced what they preach in “when its ready”, megaservers wouldn’t have seen the light of day until end of summer at the earliest.
And this next piece is something that I personally suggested over a year ago. Public Test server. Why not put the new stuff you want tested on a PTR, so that we can test it and break it for you instead of trying it out on live first. This idea was stupidly rejected not only by the community, but apparently arenanet knows better.
I work in IT development myself as a career. Standard workflow process at my company is: Dev environment, to Staging environment, to Production. Each environment is concluded with a UAT (User Accepted Testing), to which we QA everything via scenarios…we try to break it.
I never got the impression that Arenanet has anything like this in place, because there are just too many issues with all of their releases. WoW had issues early on, back in 2008 maybe. Now, their content updates and expansions go off without a hitch. Because they have months and months of PTR before its released.

And I totally agree with you, but even though the game has huge potential (at least thats what i like to think).

Then so be it, I don’t mind about stuff coming out late, i just want it to be playable (but thats is probably not the opinion of everyone here..)

WoW is about 10 years old now (I think) so of course blizzard has had time time to adapt, and I am hoping ANet will do the same in a near future.. but who knows ?
and maybe money issues due to the buisness model, i don’t know..
Anyways I do agree 100% that something has to be done on ANet’s side if they want the game to live for the many years to come, espacially as you mentioned on the testing side.
Don’t worry guys, Lawless Helm and Shoulders now in the Gem Store!
And they brought back the executioner’s outfit too!

Why don’t you guys just stop playing this game. Do what I did and walk away? Its the last straw.
So I didn’t really want to go super in-depth as to why I still want to love and play this game, but I MIGHT AS WELL. WALL OF TEXT INC
My boyfriend and I met raiding on WoW about four-ish years ago. I’m in Pennsylvania, he’s in Cali. Neither of us have the income/job prospects to just up and move across the country to be with each other. We have kept our relationship going long-term long-distance by playing video games. It’s tough, being so many timezones apart, especially for me because I work a 9-5 (his work schedule is a lot more flexible due to the nature of what he does) and I often stay up late to hang out with him.
After we both quit WoW, it was hard to find a game both of us wanted to play. I got into SWTOR and it became my main MMO, but he hates SWTOR with a passion, so that was a no-go. We sometimes play TF2 or co-op games, but before he gifted me a copy of GW2 to play with him we didn’t have an MMO to hang out in together. First thing I would hear (pre patch) when I’d log in to mumble would be “hey, x is spawning soon, want to kill it?” or “Want to do a dungeon/fractal?” When it’s so hard to meet up in real life regularly, something as simple as hanging out in a video game becomes infinitely more precious.
It’s hard to drop GW2 when if I do there won’t be anything to fill the gap relationship-wise. I can’t in good conscience keep supporting a game (my copy may have been a gift, but the gem purchases were all me) that treats its customers with such disrespect.
The bottom line: when I’m not enjoying GW2, it puts a visible strain on our relationship. You don’t want to take your SO out on a date to a place they hate, and that’s what it feels like for me right now. I hate logging in and getting a megaserver, I hate the spawn time changes, I hate the shameless addition of gemstore items when they can’t get their base game to work properly.
TL;DR I want to be done with GW2, but where will I go? Can I even find a MMO that both me and my boyfriend will enjoy after this one?
I, just… -sigh-

I think many people won’t give negative opinions in a public map chat, including myself, because the people that like it are more vocal and likely to troll you for it. A forum is a place where people can write longer explanations as to why they dislike an aspect of the game and can actually discuss it at length.
I think a lot of people will not give positive feedback on the forums when they came just to give their opinion on a hot topic and they are told that they are wrong and then they feel that they have to defend their opinion. An opinion is just that one persons point of view from the experiences they have.
Also no I am not speaking to anyone directly. I am quoting to give my comment context.
Personally I find that the player base has a mixed opinion of the MegaServers. Some hate it (especially those on higher population servers, In large guilds, On servers in Europe to where they can get mixed with the other language servers.) Some people like it (Commonly low population servers or people who like to level. Including new players.) Some people are indifferent(I think a lot of those think it is a good idea but don’t think the configuration is perfect) and are giving ArneaNet time to fix the algorithm or provide tools to help alleviate the downfalls of the MegaServer.
Depending on what group you are in will shape how you feel, (and how you think other people feel) about the MegaServer.
My point of view is somewhere between indifferent and liking it.
Server communities? I don’t care for them, I have my guild, that’s my community.
I think a lot of people are in this camp. But then there are others that were part of a larger community. Those communities were hit hard.

Seriously, who wants to be in overflow maps permanently? I chose Vabbi because I wanted to be a part of a smaller community than my previous server; Gunnars Hold.
What am I a part of now? A giant randomized melting pot with hundreds of gold sellers and players from other servers with other languages etc. Anet HAS to do something about this, either let us choose which server we want to enter or make SOME or at least ONE major city based on home server.
The following has been turned to ashes because of the “Megaserver”/Overflow:
- Guild Missions
- Guild recruitment
- WPing
- WvW talk in mapchat
- PvE Champions
- PvE major events
- Server communities
- RPing
