Game Updates: Guild World Events, Megaservers, WvW
I hope there is something around the corner
It is possible. Maybe they are getting ready for some permanent new areas. Maybe that is why they needed the MegaServer so the reset of the game does not turn into a wasteland while everyone plays the new areas.
Megaserver is here to stay imo the reason why they have been mostly silent is PR dept taking sweet time to craft delicate responses to very angry customers. The business decision was made and to make an about-face on megaserver now would be sending too many mixed signals. So therefore, let’s all learn to live in the new state of megaserver bliss and happiness…

I don’t want to learn to live in this new state. If I do, Anet will say ‘You see, you can get used to it, so we won’t do anything about it’. There is NO WAY I’ll learn to live with that.

If the system was working 100% as described in the blog post and had a 100% success rate could you live with it?
If not why?
If the system was working 100% as described in the blog post and had a 100% success rate could you live with it?

Because it can’t work as advertised from a conceptual level. Nobody seems to understand that the stated goal of the megaserver system was to put as many players as possible in as few map instances as possible and this makes it very easy to cap thus not allowing people to join up or create population imbalances thus splitting up servers and groups of players.
Also nobody asks where the system will get the new players from to fill these shards with, aka ppl from all the other servers ripped from their communities to fill the shards.
Well, just logged in to gendaren fields to find its now a megaserver, and I do not recognise any players or any guild tags.
R.I.P. Aurora Glade community, thank you for the last 606 days.

The only instances that I think people are getting pulled from their server communities to fill shards is when they are on a High Population server like Tarnished Coast or during the Boss Events even then I think the system is trying to find the best second option for you. Tarnished Coast went into overflows in some of the main cities BEFORE megaserver.
So the system can work to a point. I do not feel the idea was to create as few shards as possible. I think the idea behind it was to get rid of the wasteland and the feeling that no-one is around. That does not require to stuff as many people as possible. I also don’t think it was purely about the money.
See the following quote for my justification.
I’m starting to dig the speculation that megaservers were never really about populating lower level areas and having people to play with.
It was about shutting down servers and saving a ton of money.
So instead of it being a feature, it was a cost-saving measure.
There are what, <= 50 maps, and <= 60 worlds? The product is only 300 — assuming each map is held by a single server, it seems likely that this takes on the order of 300 machines — and the actual hardware savings will be less, as some would still be used. Assume we could save 50% — that seems a generous estimate once you include overflows. (I’d guess it’s more like 25%, but it’s possible that they were wasting more server resources on unpopulated worlds.)
The cost of running machines is IIRC roughly equivalent to the capital costs over their lifetime … the cost of machines should probably be on the order of $5k/each (could be more or less). So — very rough ballpark — I’d assume that they’d save ~ $1.5m over ~2-3y (assuming amortization over that timeframe) — say about $500k / year. The run rate for the gem store is more than that — I don’t think they’d have a business justification for this unless they thought it would ultimately be popular.
However all that is irrelevant to my question. If it was possible to work as described 100% of the time. Even 99% of the time. Or even 95% of the time(that may actually be possible). Could you live with it? If not Why?

If the system actually allowed me to play with my friends, my guild mates, if the system actually allowed me to do events properly without crossing my fingers to be able to hit the boss at least one time to get the participation while my FPS drop below 10, if the system actually allowed me to find my community back, my server people I used to play with and talk to, if ALL OF THAT was actually working 100%, yes, I could live with it, because my way to enjoy the game (as well as the majority of the players) would be preserved despite Anet’s wish to use this megaserver stuff.
But it is NOT working in any way. Nothing of all this works. They just gave us something in alpha process, without testing anything, even making myself wondering if the +225% they told us is not a number they picked from their magic hats just to make us think they are actually working on something stable and useful.
You got your answer?

Bravo again for ruining Orr, it is bad enough you have removed enemies in there, nerfed events into the ground, nerfed loot into the ground, now we have no way of telling if a temple is truly contested without WPing to Orr to check, then WP back, ( double hit cost, id rather you put armor repair costs back and removed WP costs seeing as we have NO CHOICE but to WP twice in every map in the game now ) or better yet, please send the Dev who made that decision to post in here explaining how they thought this was a great idea?
Mega server has now officially ruined this game for me, good job.
I’d be fine with it if 2 things happened.
1) overlapping boss schedules. (more world bosses running so they don’t get zerged so badly)
2) towns stayed server based.
I’m more of the mind that anets hands are tied here.

Definitely has the feel of being told by the bean counters to merge servers, but put a good spin on it.

That’s the theory. I play on a rather low populated server and when I was in Gendarran Fields yesterday I got placed on at least three different shards (logging in and out) and tbh I didn’t have the Impression that one of those shards was populated with people form my server (maybe very few). I can only hope that this isn’t the final solution.
I can’t see this ever working out unless they figure out a way to drastically cut the population per map, without actually lowering map caps, since that would just exacerbate the guild event problems.
There are just too many people stacked on top of a single boss, too much time in between these bosses since some of them take a whopping 30 seconds to kill, and no option of going to another boss if one you actually don’t like doing is up. Personally, I hate the new SB – it’s the same kitten fight we had, just 10 minutes longer, so it’s boring as kitten. I don’t like doing Ulgoth either.
Before this patch, I’d have skipped those and gone to another boss, since there was usually several happening at once. Now I have no choice. I go to those or sit around for 15-30 minutes while I wait for a boss I actually have an interest in doing.
I could deal with this change though, as inflexible as it is, if it weren’t for the zergs. Playing “ZERG ALL THE THINGS \o/” is not fun, degrades some normally fun boss fights into carebear-difficulty 11111111 spam, and is definitely taxing on FPS.

2. Rent-able maps.
How about no? And gain NO NO NO, shall I type no a bilion times in a row?
No rents, no gems, not for anything, even putting Custom PVP Arenas behind a gem purchase was stupid (and they are way way too expensive too).
The first thing they have to fix are World Bosses like Teq/Wurm and Guild Missions. Add an option for guild officers/leaders when they start them, a new instance of the map is created so they can port in their guildies and can do the event in peace. After some time passes (or the map reaches a certain threshold) the map becomes public again and everyone and anyone can join just like a regular instance of the map.
We don’t want Random Joe to miss his chance to leech a Tequatl kill by spamming 1 and being semi-afk for most of the fight, right?
There, everyone should be happy with this.
And if I wasn’t clear enough, I repeat, never ever put it on the gemstore, that would be just stupid. Don’t give them ideas…

Ya, what’s up with that? I was in DR this morning and had a half hour to play so thought I’d do a little map completion in Orr. Using “M” from DR, it looks like the area I need to map is all contested, Balth temple closed, so I WP to a mid-point region. I get to the actual map, and the temple is open. I do not understand this system.
Next in the feature patch: Megaservers come to WvW. Tired of waiting for a queue? Megaserver! Tired of being outnumbered? Megaserver!

Like with the Ascended tier announce in November 2012, and the Ascended armor announce this year…I wonder if they are sitting around in the office , patting eachother on the back saying “Great job guys. Huge win. Keep it up. They love it. What a fantastic innovative approach to open world. Very fun gaming experience.”
much lower soft map cap, would solve alot of the issues, can only join in then, if you know someone in that server.
and I’m talking a soft cap of say 40 or 50 people.

I’d say we now have 19 pages of (mostly the same) people overreacting and forgetting the flaws of the game from less than 2 weeks ago. Megaservers aren’t perfect, but I’d take it any day over the situation from 2 weeks ago.

Id say the opposite. Id say with Living Story temporarily done, and the content patches are feature and QoL patches, the previous few weeks were the most exciting time for me with GW2 than they have been since November 2012. And we all know what happened then…
For me…
QoL and features = good
Living Story = bad
Megaserver = good intentions, executed horribly.

Seems like the german ANet devs actually communicate with the players. Google translate tells in a nutshell that they are aware of problems and are working on fixing them. (I’m optimistic about the line where he says they are looking to change big boss times.) Now, is it so very hard to get an english community dev to give us this same message?
About people hating/loving megaservers: I would imagine most people in-game don’t really care or even know what’s going on. They might not even read update notes or know what the kitten is a megaserver! But if anyone is trying to spin a truth that people are simply loving it and criticism is simply on the forums where a few people are shouting, you aren’t being honest. The fact that the german dev posted that ANet has acknowledged the critique and are working on solutions should tell you that it’s not the great success and universally loved as you claim it to be.
I have a not so great internet connection. When there is a huge zerg on a world boss. I lag and might dc. Before this i can log back in and still able to loot the ‘big chest’. But now i can only get the daily bonus chest. The ‘big chest’ is no where to be found.
i like the general MS idea but its implementation is bad.I also dont like the boss schedule, feels like work.

Why is it better now? What have I forgotten? How is it an overreaction?
I can’t run temples anymore. My servers metatrain, which I really enjoyed, is dead. Guild missions are a giant pain now. Rata Sum has newly installed lag generators in the bank area. I don’t RP myself, but I’ve watched the tragedy of RPers getting trolled off a map.
What benefit did Megaservers bring which outweighed all of that?
Niniyl (Ele) | Barah (Eng) | Luthiyn (War) | Niennya (Thf)
This is
Megaservers has mostly been a big positive for me.
It’s because of my play style though. Leveling up my alts, there are always people around now, to make some of the tougher content easier. Running into Centaur camps and killing elites and getting skill points is now all possible because there are more people around.
Also, in Orr, the temples are usually open, or there are events in progress, so I can actually buy stuff with Karma any time now.
In addition, I’ve got to do the Shadow Behemoth event a few times, because I know when it’s scheduled, having never done it before.
The only slight annoyance is that the Queensdale Champion Train is all messed up with people arguing about the order we should do.
I’m not in a guild, so that part is not an issue for me. I don’t bother with the harder world bosses, so their schedule doesn’t bother me.
So, all in all, a big thumbs up from me for Megaservers.
Updated every Monday
My experience on megaserver yesterday:
Guildie on guild chat: Karka queen about to pop on my server. Join on me if you need it.
I invite him in party and zone to southsun. After the zone loaded, I found myself on a different server than my team. So, I join on him to get to correct server. Luckily for me world was not full and I could merge.
But, alas, by the time the screen loaded, queen was in the 2nd phase. Since my toon did not have the ability of Usain Bolt, I could not even get to the queen by the time the event was over.
Not only the new world event timings are very frustrating but, also for people who used to enjoy world events as a community, it is a killer. Every single soul in my 500 member guild hates it.
On the character screen, I checked the world server list, and I saw that my friend apparently had the German server Dzagonur [DE] as her home server.
I logged in and spoke with her, and then logged out to check again, and she was not marked playing on that server anymore, but on the server I was playing on.
What was that about? Why did a GERMAN server got marked as her home server when she was actually playing on my server which is english speaking.
I do not dislike Germans, just wondering why she got placed on a German server when we both play on English speaking ones.
I’m sure this has been said already, but I just wanted to add my voice to this.
Overall the concept of Megaservers is great and for the most part, Megaservers has been a positive experience. I love seeing populated maps.
However when I ran Guild Bounties last weekend with my relatively small guild (we had maybe 12 people playing), getting everyone on the same map under a timer was an unexpected bump and a little stressful. Thankfully we had a solution: confirm everyone on the map could see the guild leader’s commander tag and if not, the commander is available for adding to the party and joining on. Nonetheless, it’s rather inconvenient and I hope this issue receives some attention.
I frequent DR to get business done and chat. So far, it has been very busy and I’m not sure why towns benefit from high populations (more load time, there’s no event in towns that need groups). That said, I’m mostly still seeing familiar faces and I’m happy to make new friends, so I’m not really bothered by this.
So yeah my only /real/ gripe is that Guild Bounties have this extra hurdle to overcome. Otherwise, I’m pretty happy with the update.
We really need the ability to right click on a guildmate or friend and travel to their server version without having to be in their party.
That one small change would make a HUGE difference. As it stands, guilds and friends are not being kept together reliably. The result is guilds are seeing less of other guild members and other friends on the map instead of more, as was postulated by the developers when megaservers were announced.
We need better tools for staying together with the people we most want to play with. Having to party and taxi is a chore and really takes from the fun of the game.

GW1 did it the CORRECT WAY using districts that could be manually switched to.
Just ANOTHER of the; dare I say it, one of the best things about GW1 that SHOULD BE in GW2.

They have already stated that they thought about districts. However that may not be the best idea for this game.
Is there a reason why the District system wasnt adopted from guildwars 1 and used for the instances in GW2 map zones instead of the original overflow idea.
Guild Wars 1 is a very different game both in design and implementation. That’s all I can really say here.
There is a big downside to them implementing districts that a lot of people may not have thought of. I will not go into them here likely for the same reason that the dev said “That’s all I can really say here.”
I will say this however. There is a reason why they limited guesting to two times in a 24 hour period. For that same reason we can not have districts. Unless they find some other way to effectively do the same limitations. But then would you really want to switch districts if you were limited to how many times you could do it?

I’ve been enjoying the Mega Server. It needs refinement for sure but it’s a welcomed change. More players in the open world is better. I guess I am lucky that many of the issues listed here either haven’t effected me yet or don’t effect me. I did guild missions this past week with no problem.
Not being able to see what is and isn’t contested and seeing party members in other maps is annoying but certainly not world ending. That is something though that I hope the can address.
To me the megaserver is a double edged sword. I’m sure most people from high-pop servers don’t like it because they already had a high population to begin with so there’s no reason they would even want a megaserver.
Speaking from someone who comes from a low-pop server I do prefer the change to megaserver for most maps. Now I can finally do bosses like kitten, Jormag, Taidha, Megadestroyer and etc. I do wish temples and other world bosses like Fire Shaman, Dredge Commissar, Eye of Zhaitan, and Foulbear Chieftain were included in the boss timer because now I never know when temples start or who is doing them and I used to do them daily. My server did have a temple run/meta train but I really didn’t like that because I didn’t like the fact that you had to wait until the temple run happened before anyone ever bothered doing temples. And if you couldn’t be on during the temple run then forget it you’re just going to have to guest to a high-pop server to find a group doing that temple/boss.
The part of the megaserver I dislike is that fact that if you did want to organize guild events or do missions you can’t because even if it claims to put you in the same map it really doesn’t work half the time. There needs to be an easier way to port to a guild member’s map instead of having to party them. I also feel they really should’ve put in the guild system where it’s the same for every server. I know it’s coming soon but they should’ve put it in at the same time the megaserver went live because now you’re getting guild members from every server but they can’t see the guild missions/upgrades and use the guild bank and stuff.
I think another problem is the amount of people at certain events. We really do not need tons of people at smaller events like Maw or Ulgoth but it’s dividing people at events were you really need them like Teq and Tri-Wurm. Today I was trying to do Teq but we didn’t have enough people and my other party members were ported to a map which also didn’t have enough players. They stayed there to see how it turned out but needless to say both maps failed Teq.
To me overall more people in maps is better. Maybe some people don’t like a lot of people but I think the general consensus is it’s better to have populated maps. Therefore the megaserver is a good idea but the game cannot properly manage where to put people. Even if they fix it so “most of the time” you get into the map with your peers it still won’t be all the time and what about the ones who want to be in less populated maps? So I think obvious answer is to just let people choose where to go like the district system in GW1 or at least make some sort of option where you can choose where you want the game to put you.
Districts would mean showing everyone exactly how many instances of each map exists and thus giving everyone a good indication of how many people play the game. I don’t think that’s information that Anet wants to share.

This is
Districts would be awesome. Even ESO’s “mega server” lacks this and GW1 had it. Kinda baffling when you think about it.
However I come from a high population servers, perhaps one of the highest and even there a good deal of the maps are dead most of the time, this has given new life to a good deal many maps.
I do think that because I am used to doing fire elemental with 10 billion players at once that the mega server doesn’t seem like such a shock to me, as it is to other players.
The idea behind the Megaserver was a good one, but is severely flawed. It doesn’t help people that are in a larger guild. We have tried to have guild events where it’s mostly members from our guild, but end up with most of the members able to come, but several people not able to join in on the same event.
I’ve given the megaservers a week now and I enjoyed the chat and population of the first few maps I went into while leveling my latest character (Diessa, Lornar’s and Dredgehaunt). Then I went into Queensdale and I’ve now had /map turned off for the last three days and it wont be coming back on. And as for world bosses…
I know there are plenty of people who like the megaserver but I can’t myself in that group.
Would you like some hard cheeze with your sad whine?
Personally I think people would enjoy at least 1 map that’s not Megaserver. Maybe a small nice looking place….But a place you know?
The purpose of the megaserver was to increase map population.
It worked, and too much in my opinion.
I really like to see a lot of people around!
I do not care about trolls or other languages in chat because english is not my native language.
But….
-There are too many pple at World Events, a lot of confusion and a bit of frustration when the bosses are shooted in 30 secs due to the zerg. That is no more fun, only farm.
- It was interesting to start the event in 10 pple and fight your way to success, this is no more possible sadly.
While I like the new system that encourage (and force) players to play with other servers I’d like tu suggest a couple of things:
- Lower the population cap on World events maps, or atleast scale well the World Bosses, cuz 30 secs is not funny or interesting at all. Also I can’t see AoE or other effects to “do something” during the event.
- Towns (Divinity’s Reach, Hoelbrak, Black Citadel, The Grove, Rata Sum, Lion’s Arch) should remain for Server. The servers need a place where a community can meet, discuss (about WwW) , recruit and meet pple on the same server. It would be fine to choose the “server map” or “megaserver map” (just for towns).
Guild Missions: we did them several times and we got no problem with megaservers. Some of us joined in another server, but the “Join” funcion in the party panel resolve the issue easily.
Thank you for reading.

Also, in Orr, the temples are usually open, or there are events in progress, so I can actually buy stuff with Karma any time now.
Temples being “usually open” means a lot of us are missing out on what used to be routine daily temple runs as a result of increased difficulty in finding available temples to do, which I think is a bigger issue than not having its NPCs available at all times.
Like others have mentioned in previous posts, the temples appear to be contested when viewed from outside the map but when you make your way you’ll be disappointed to discover that they’ve already been done. Waiting around for them to become available again is just impractical.
Overall, IMO the Megaserver advantages don’t come close to outweighing the disadvantages. Others in this 20 page+ thread have explained the disadvantages of having Megaservers including lag issues, guild mission hindrances, server community being lost, RPers being stifled… (so I don’t see any sense in repeating what is already well-explained), and I strongly agree with them.
A solution to temples could be to track daily temple bonus chest. This is awarded once a day for account. Previously you could do a temple on several characters but the game knew to track you were only eligible for the bonus chest once.
What I’m trying to say if such a sorting system were possible, someone who hasn’t done say temples in Malchor’s Leap that day, upon zoning to ML get sent to a new map shard that identifies they haven’t done the temples and sets the map to spawn say Dwayna pre-event in the next 15 min, and using that timeframe for filling the map with other players flagged for no temples that day in the zone. Best compromise I can think of, since one temple run a day is better than none.
Just some impressions and a few personal views (Don´t take any of it personal):
Some things i find rather amusing, or not, out of pure boredom i continued expoling a map. Namely Frostgorge Sound.
I remember when i did this the first time with my necro and the last time i was there with my mesmer prior to the patch. It was a pain in the buttocks to kill something. Now with my mesmer which has basicly the same build and armor as the last time, mobs are falling like flies. Just basicly pressing one and count to three and it is dead.
Soloing a champion was also quite a challenge once. Now it is just boring.
There is basicly no skill at all required anymore anywhere in normal PvE.
The only challenge i encounter is in WvW “sometimes”, but it is also interesting to notice how many ppl there now have no skill at all. When i can win a 1:2 or 1:3 with a “Zergsupport Mesmer build” and PVT gear, than that says something about the quality of my opponents.
Well killing PvE champions by pressing 1 and waiting until there is some loot helps a lot to better the playstyle and skill.
Also the Dungeons got nerfed quite a bit. Good when you go in ungeared with a low level char, but painfully boring now with a well equipped and traited 80.
About the megaservers in general.
The only PvE content i usually play is when i kill Tequatl and the 3H-Wurm.
Still quite possible when you are in one of the many communities out there that does nothing else and if they know how to play the “overflow game”.
Even more so after they nerfed it. It almost got too easy.
For those who do this only for the skin, don´t even think about it.
I recently had my 650th Tequatl and still got no skin or even that kitten mini
(to be honest i gave up on that a long time ago, just doing it for the community) How about handing out tokens for this kind of content?
About the Roleplayers. I am not a roleplayer but i know quite a lot of them.
Some might not know this but they are actually those who buy the most gems.
Ergo best costumers. Don´t frack with them. Give them at least DR back.
As for the “normal” players, just ignore the roleplayers and vice versa. They are people too and if you make an effort to actually get to know some of them you will find out that they are quite nice in general. Some of them are also quite good players (in terms of skill).
The Tower of Babel. For those poor tormented souls on the EU servers that have to endure the strange sentences in the chat which they can´t understand because it looks gibberish: Just ignore it and learn to life with it. If you can´t read it, than it is not meant for you anyway. Getting insulting just gets you reported. I will certainly do continue to use the report function whenever i read that some people are kittening around in the chat because of it.
For people that get disconnected all the time, experience client crashes, getting BSODs or play with 5 FPS all of a sudden. I will certainly not say buy a new PC, mine is also state of the art and i had to make a few cuts.
First turn down you graphics to best performance (charcter model quality on low is enough), trust me it helps.
Do not have anything running in the background (close the browser while playing).
BSODs in this game are 90% because of overheating. Google what you can do about it (cleaning your fan and CPU cooler would be a good start).
2 Minutes of loading time? Get kitten and/or reinstall Windows and GW2.
In general, just a bit of maintenance with your PC avoids a lot of these issues.
Making the ascended gear account bound was a good call, at least for me.
Saves me a lot of time and money.
Skins also.
For those PvE players that get farmed when entering WvW for the achievements, sorry but i just can say get yourself a mentor and aquire some skill or learn to live with it. May sound a bit mean, but pressing 1 while standing on one spot just makes you a tempting target. At least learn how to dodge.
As for the guild missions, well. There must be done something about that real soon.
Missing loot from World Boss events? Loot on Tequatl and 3H-Wurm is bad enough already. Fix that asap please. Ignoring the tickets does not help either.
Almost forgot. If you get killed by a mob in PvE or having trouble there, check your traits. They got resetted.
I vote for districts like in GW1.
Edit: Get rid of that language filter, it does not work anyway.

Megaservers are great and have made the game so much more fun for me and my friends. Thanks ANET!
