Game Updates: Wardrobe, Transmutation, Outfits
I never used town clothes, so I can’t comment on the changes there.
As far as the basic idea behind the Wardrobe system, I love it. I love being able to preview all the skins in the game. I used the Wardrobe tab in the bank to find out that I really need Arah robes and Twilight Arbor shoulders to look truly fabulous.
Areas for improvement:
* Please allow more sorting of the “all skins” tab – crafted, dungeon, no longer obtainable, etc
* It would be really, really, really great if wardrobe transmutations applied to the slot instead of the item. As is, I will likely never use the system on an alt because the gear will get replaced. This is disappointing.
I also have to tell my dissapointement about town clothes.
First of all, the good thing: having the ability to use them in battle is a great idea. I love to see my engineer with her Wintersday outfit, ready to burn people with her flamethrower ALso, the ability to put glasses with our normal armor is quite neat.
Now, the bad points. I’m pretty sure these have already been covered, but I’ll say it anyways.
-1) Tonics.
Just… How? Why? Why can’t I wear my shorts with my normal town clothes? The dissapearance of all unique piece as stuff is really a bad thing.
-Outfits.
The main problem with outfits is the dye system. On the wintersday outfit, I used to put different dyes on different parts. Now, I can’t, and if I want to put some white somewhere, it also put this dye somewhere else, and… it’s becomes quite ugly.
-2) No more mixs.
I used to wear a short, hooded top, executioner boots, cook gloves and aviator sunglasses. Now I feel REALLY limited. Between outfits, tonics and headgear as armor, customization has been greatly limited.
We made a step forward, but also one backward. All thoses pieces existed before. What we need is the actual wardrobe system, but the old town clothes system.
We need the ability to switch between armor and town clothes, but also the ability to make our own outfits.
I really hope this will be changed back!
Before I begin, allow me to remind you of something. “Everything in moderation,
including moderation”.
Also, know that I am very passionate about Guild Wars and enjoy it thoroughly, but this is an issue that bothers me greatly, and I must discuss it with you.
I’m sure a wardrobe system is something every player might have looked forward to.
Just not the system as it was implemented. Let me get to the point: this is a decrease in quality.
Town clothes. Why didn’t you ask your players before attempting something as outrageous and hideously invasive as this? I understand the content is subject to change, but the way this was handled feels disgusting and abusive, like a way to force me to buy transmutation charges from the new system just so I can transmute the looks of armor into town clothes, rather than simply enabling me to wear town clothes as armor if I choose to do so. Problem is you also took away every single reason I had to wear town clothes, so we both lost something and won nothing. What happened to “Everything in moderation, including moderation”? Here’s the reasons:
1.- Town clothes are now set to default colors. We do not like being forced into default colors, will not wear them anymore, and none of the people I know who are interested in town clothes (that being myself, half my friends, and my roleplaying community) will wear them now, for the same reason.
The green hoodie clashes horribly with my brown fur, the leather hoodie looks dull
and un-interesting without the customized dyes that I took the time to browse, select and buy specifically for it. Now, I also require another inventory slot to carry the tonic with me.
2.- Town clothes tonics now impose pieces on you, that you may or may not have liked. There is a reason I didn’t buy every piece for every character.
3.- Town clothes can not be used in combat anyway, as the tonic disables your utility skills.
RESULT: Town clothes that can not be used in combat, and are no longer desirable to use out of combat. Why not just remove town clothes altogether?

You’re taking something that we bought and we liked, and exchanging it for something we dislike, did not ask for, is not functional, and have no use for. Are we supposed not to feel ripped off? Am I not supposed to feel disappointed?
I used to transmute high level armors into low level ones so that I could start using them early on. I upgraded my armors every 10 levels or so, and transmuted them again. Guess how many transmutation stones I used per character? But your new system feels like a way of squeezing us to buy transmutation charges. This makes it hard to feel inclined to buy them.
This was obviously a design decision. I ask you: why? Why did you choose to
‘update’ the game in order to remove a very much functional feature that could have benefit from, but did not require improvement?
I thank you for offering refunds, but the fact that you anticipate that an update will require refunds, already means you’re doing something wrong. Especially considering
there’s various alternatives that would have kept everyone happy. Generally, people want their money back when they feel like their purchase wasn’t worth it, or when you take something away from them.
Refunds are not the solution. We do not want refunds. We want to have no reason to ask for refunds.
The motivation behind an update is improvement and enhancement. You could have made everyone happy simply by enabling all future and existing town clothes pieces to be visible instead of armor with no need to transmute them or require extra inventory space to carry, as in Guild Wars 1. This would also have allowed people to retain customized colors and pieces rather than being forced into defaults.
Instead of improving the functionality of town clothes, it has been hampered.
Let me provide more alternate solutions that aren’t ideal, but still better than the current update:
1.- Convert previously purchased town clothes into independent, dyeable pieces that can be transmuted using the new system.
2.- Keep the old town clothes system, and add a secondary wardrobe for town clothes only. Allow customized dyes and do not enforce matching sets.
3.- Keep the old towns clothes system AND give players copies of the town clothes they purchased, that can be transmuted into armor pieces.
4.- Primary and secondary equipped armor sets, swappable out of combat. One of them to transmute into town clothes.
We would have used those, and you’d have actually gotten me to buy transmutation charges.
You know that I’ve been a BIG supporter and a fan. I purchased most GW1 things a player could possibly buy with cash. I had to make special arrangements to pre-purchase the GW2 Collector’s Edition because it wasn’t available in my country. I bought gems during beta. Bought gems on day 1. I’ve bought a very high number of gems from you since the game launched, spending monthly amounts that greatly surpass the equivalent of a subscription fee. I’ve bought additional copies of GW2 for my friends, who in turn have purchased gems for themselves. I’ve bought the books. I’ve bought Rytlock plushies. I bought the soundtracks (all GW 1 and 2 soundtracks). I’ve written and am writing lengthy fan fiction. I may not have agreed with everything, but I’ve always kept my faith in you and provided my continued support. And this issue makes me feel so disappointed and insulted, that it makes me wonder if that kind of support was a good idea. If this is your latest ‘update’, what will the next one be like?
Finally, I’d like to add that the interface of the new wardrobe system doesn’t seem very streamlined to me and if I could go back to the old one, I would. I understand this may be a matter of personal preference or maybe I just grew too accustomed to the functionality of the old one, so I will ignore this point, and will not consider it something negative. The town clothes, however, require your immediate attention.
This is one of several issues that your update has arisen. It also makes me wonder why you didn’t take an extra month or three to deal with these issues, before launching it?
The wardrobe is pretty awesome, the ability to wear outfits in combat is great. I mean come on, I’m a pirate now ! Problem is, outfits don’t show on my mesmer’s illusions, also, aquatic helm don’t even show on the character but that’s nowhere as big a problem as the mesmer’s illusions keeping the regular gear…
I don’t know if it is a bug, but i didn’t get any trasmutation charges for my pvp rank. Also all my pvp skins didn’t get activated in the wardrobe. Or is there something I need to do to get them activated?

This part really gets me. To paraphrase someelse on the forums.
Refund to gems? You mean that virtual currency that means nothing? They already have your money.
And its true. Its unlikely that they will ever make an "outfit " that will appeal to me. Sure you may say they will make a bikini and I will want to buy it. But then I will remember I cant mix the bikini top with the short shorts and then I will look around everyone and their mother will be in said bikini. I will look around and no one will be wearing different headgear or shoes or tops or bottoms or anything. bah I need to go to sleep I have work in morning…
or 1 hour. /wrists
my broom is gone, it’s not in my inventory, bank or wardrobe Worse part is, it was a gift from a guildy.
Anyone know where to find it? Was it deleted from the game? or converted into a tonic (which i didn’t get)?

seriously tho. why tonics. why not just make these pre-set styles attached to the sets into ‘outfits’ like the pirate/chef/etc so they could at least be fully functional and somewhat dye-able. this whole thing is asinine.
Well this update screwed me over.
My expensive sigils are on WvW Weapons, and now I have no way to get them off. They can’t be transmuted like before, and you can’t salvage them.

You have to go to the Heart of the Mists to get your PvP stuff to activate.

You have to go talk to a Black Lion Armor Merchant and register all your town clothing (on every single character you have), in order for them to show up again.

Tonics are pretty useless. I’d appreciate if more of them would have been converted to armor.
Personally I now have three useless tonics, which could easily have been armor skins:
- GW2 T-Shirt
- Khaki Shorts
- Riding Boots
I really don’t understand why those where converted to tonics instead of armor skins.
I hope those will get changed to armor skins – thanks in advance!

I’ve tried that but nothig happend. No Charges and all the skins are gone. I though maybe I need to speak to a npc…
Anyone else having trouble with their pvp skins/charges?
What bugs me is that all items we transmuted before the patch now don’t show the name of the skin, instead they show the generic-name of the item that delivered the stats.
Pls change this back @Anet

I have a male sylvari ele. He’s level 16 or so. I put the cultural T2 armor on him when he got to level 6, because I simply couldn’t stand how incredibly stupid he looked in idiotic mis-fitting cloth pants and half-suit tops made for humans.
So now, I am practically forced into stashing the T2 armor look, and just grind my character to 80 before putting T2 back on him.
Why?
Because I will not pay 5 trans charges every 10 levels to keep the look. That’s pathetic.
Changing skins… It’s fine if you have to pay once to unlock the skins for future use, but paying every time is horrible.
Alternatively, I can create a “map farming” character (keeps company to “key farm” character), and clear city maps over and over. Oh what FUN.
Contact support, you can get a refund.

Overall, I’m quite pleased with the update, my only grief is the town clothes pieces that got turned into tonics. I have few of those sets and where as I don’t mind what they turned into cosmetically, (the sets I have are pretty okay, but that’s just my opinion) but function wise.
We have the pretty nice concept of outfits that can be dyed and used in combat. I like that. Then we have the problem of these tonic sets which cannot be dyed or used in combat. I wish that all these tonic sets would get converted into outfits, so we can use them in combat as well as change their colors.
Hope there’s no technical difficulties which prevents tonic sets to outfits change.
I am also unhappy about the wardrobe and the town clothes.
I liked my town clothes- that is why I bought them.
I liked the fact that I could dye them
Now- not only are they not dye-able they are converted to generic tonics- that are either mud colored or black and red.
So I will be asking for a refund.
Thank you for tasking something away from me that I really enjoyed.
A for the wardrobe- it will now be prohibitive in cost to keep my characters looking the way I want.
So thank you again for taking something away from me that I already had.
As you can guess I do not like this patch- and this is just the cosmetic bit.
I will comment on the rest of it in the relevant sections.
oh the dyes I got back was nice so thank you for that.( it is the only good thing about this patch)

Town clothes have been replaced by the wardrobe and outfits as a way to customize characters in and out of combat.
Some single-piece town clothes that are no longer available have been converted to endless tonics that transform the player into a complete casual look, including that single piece of clothing.
The single-piece town clothes were nerfed?
The Town Clothes section has been removed. The single-piece clothing has been converted into potions. The potions last 15 minutes. Those potions choose the rest of your outfit for you. And those outfits can’t be dyed…
Why not just convert all of the single-piece town clothes into their own individual armor skins? If someone bought a Striped Silk Vest with Shirt, why not stick it in the new Wardrobe under ‘Chest’? If someone bought the Khaki Cargo Shorts, why not put it in the new Wardrobe under ‘Leggings’? Do one of the programmer’s think there would be some sort of exploit in doing this?
The way this was handled seems so lazy. Every shirt gets matched up to the same Riding Gloves, Riding Boots, and Riding Pants. The Khaki Shorts get paired with a fitted casual shirt that gives the impression that it’s really cold out here, but it’s summer from the waist down.
Also, I’ve heard that you can apply for a refund on your town clothes, but you only get your money back in Gems. That’s not a refund. That’s trading in your cosmetic clothing for something else in the online store. :/
The million-dollar question is this, what was the point of dropping the old town clothes system? I know the full costumes have been moved to the new Outfit section, but the single-piece town clothes are not part of the new wardrobe system (like I expected) and are a potion instead. All of the old limitations are still there. If you attack anything your town clothes wear off. If a mob hits you your town clothes wear off. So what was the purpose of converting town clothes into tonics? Surely someone at ArenaNet can give us a reason for this?
Unless this gets fixed in a future patch I will never spend cash on GW2 Gems ever again. I know a lot of other people feel the same way, and I doubt the goal of selling micro-transaction fluff is to drive business away. When you troll your own consumer base, you begin your own death spiral.
PS – I am not a roleplayer, this effects everyone who buys fluff.
I have multiple weapons/armor sets that I no longer use which contain expensive sigils/runes which are now worthless because I have no means of recovering/transmuting the upgrades to more relevant items (as they are on unsalvagable items).
Please allow all such items to be salvaged even if it destroys the item and only gives the upgrade (and no crafting materials, etc.). At this point these items merely take up a ton of bank space while serving no purpose, but I dare not delete them because of large amount of gold I have invested in them.
I have the same issue, I was about to upgrade my exotic PVT armor/weapons into ascended, keeping my expensive sigil/runes for the transfer, but could not do this after the update.
Before this update, I could use a transmutation stone to carry the sigil/rune onto the ascended stat item, but now I can’t do anything with my current PVT weapons/armor, besides have them sit there as wasted gold. Right now I have to buy new sigils/runes to put into my ascended armor, or buy a completely overpriced upgrade extractor to do what I could do just yesterday.
This kind of issue should have been obvious, other than the fact they did it on purpose to force people to use the upgrade extractor or waste even more gold rebuying everything.
The wardrobe system was suppsoed to be a huge addition to the game, but instead it’s rather bad and kinda greedy:
- It would have been better if you could consume 1 trans charge per change on the overall appearence (say you want to change shoulders, legs, and helm all in one time? It should consume 1 charge instead of 3).
You should make it so one charge is equal to one overall change (and not to one single piece change), or you are penalizing a great community of players, rp or not, who like to do so.
- The change for the outfits is completely useless now, Anet has left a great system to customize your townclothes for a system who is very poor in customization. Was it really so hard to implement both the systems so you could store your outfits’ skins in your outfit section of the wardrobe and still be able to wear it in combat and change and mixing colors and pieces? You just had to implement both the ways in one without this useless tonic thing.
- The dye confirmation of the 0 charges is useless and a time wasting procedure. Not only this, but a lot of players, including myself, would always feel like they could waste charges if clicking something wrong. So please, get rid of the confirmation of charges on the dye section.
In general I like the wardrobe.
But I really hate what you did to town clothes… it was always my favorite to color my norn town clothes white/red during christmas and put on the festive had… now you ruined it and also now I need another two inventory slots for carrying my town clothes and my broom.. this sucks -.-

“A release is 7 days or less away or has just happened within the last 7 days…
These are the only two states you’ll find the world of Tyria.”
Alright. I took this game really casual when I saw this armor could ONLY be obtained in PVP and, as a roleplayer on Tarnished Coast, my necromancer would never be wandering around town with it where I could actually, you know, ‘use’ it. But now the armor is literally impossible to obtain and I see no reason why that should be the case. I don’t mind it being hard to obtain, or extremely rare, or even sitting in some horribly difficult dungeon at the end of the game that makes you tear out your hair to get, but this is some fantastic armor that Anet clearly worked hard and well on, so why is it now impossible to obtain? And for those of us who didn’t go balls to the wall PVPing to get it previously, please bear in mind I don’t think anyone could predict ‘all that cool PVP loot you earned is suddenly going to be available to you in the rest of the game.’ This armor wasn’t even ‘retired,’ it was more like it barely existed to begin with, those of us interested in it, for the most part, had barely any reason to mess with the one way to get it, and voila, a slap to the face, suddenly a bare select few people waggle it around and everyone else is SOoL forever?
…Man, some things were done really well with this patch, but there’s a lot of things (thinking of certain outfits people paid an awful lot of gems to mix and match) that just really got fudged over.
http://gw2armorgallery.com/armour/human/human-light-stand-masquerade-female.jpg for reference. …I shoulda picked a picture with better colors, but whatevz.
…If stuff is going to become exclusive or impossible, TELL US or give us some kind of hint. If things we paid real money for are going to be broken, merged, turned into annoying tonics, or basically not be what we paid for, TELL US. Refunds are great, but you know what’s better? Knowing I have what I paid for and being happy with it. :|
My outfits omg I left them on my characters not only that two of my lv 80 has most of my town outfits >_< every time I look at a town outfit it says I already have a outfit on but I can’t find it and I can’t even unlock them this sucks
Something I noticed almost immediately is that there is alot of clicking involved at the hero panel now. Instead of having a ‘back’ button when you are in the equipment menu I’d suggest you use 3 icons next to eachother to quickly swap from Equipment to Wardrobe to Dyeing. That way people won’t have to click on ‘back’ and then on the corresponding menu they want to use. If you position the icons next to eachother there should still be enough room to keep the dropdown menus for gear/dye etc on the left side of the character. It’s mostly a convenience thing but smooth UI can really add to the feel of the system.
For the wardrobe I’d like to see a ‘favourites’ section (if there already is one, disregard this.. I may have missed that if so). That way people can favourite some skins and won’t have to search the whole wardrobe if they want to re-acquire certain looks. Perhaps this can also be expanded into equipment looks as entire sets. Allowing people to save up a few looks (including dye setup?) so they can just click on that, transmute and then all the gear that changes looks would transmute at once.
As some who still has to level up some characters, I am disappointed with the transmutation changes. Since transmutation stones only worked on items below level 80, it meant they were great for maintaining my chosen look while levelling up. They were also fairly easy to obtain, so I had a decent supply of them.
After the update, I am down to about 40 charges, which would be great if I didn’t have 3 characters below level 50 and if a single change of a piece of gear didn’t cost 1 charge.
Consider making it cost only one charge no matter how many gear pieces you change on characters below level 80. Or perhaps someone can come with a better solution.

Wasn’t it like that all items and skins you’ve previously acquired should be now in the wardrobe?
I’ve bound many items in the past and then got rid of them like backs from Bazaar and I was so happy that I’ll get the skins bSame goes for soulbinded items. For past month I was I was soulbinding many items and then salvaging them beacuse it was said that we’ll get every past skin which was binded or such.
Now it looks like that only items had in lockers/on characters are in wardrobe, no past skins….

There was a better solution posted up, using Charges to unlock skins for permanent use, so you could swap the look. Alternatively, separate Wardrobe look from your items, so you always look like that. This current system is built from the ground up to nickle and dime us all straight into hell.

They actually never said anywhere that past items that you destroyed will be available in the wardrobe.

Same here, I like having my character wear nice combinations, and generally look nice no matter the level.
Now it would be much harder to do so while leveling up, since it costs three times as much for lower level characters to transmute, then it used to.
I really hate the transmutation system, it feels like you’re only renting the armor,
not having permanent armor skins.
It should just be a one time fee with the charges,
to unlock a skin instead, for your account,
and then reuse as many times as you want afterwards on armors for free.
Two things, which I will re-iterate elsewhere. Once I find a better place to iterate them :/
1) The displayed "0 transmutation charge’ on dyes is confusing. A slightly more responsive system would be appreciated. One that doesn’t display the transmutation cost at all unless there actually is one (and states the cost is for armor changes). Besides that I do like the system
2) Many of the Historic Living World skins that were unlocked through achievements will never be available again. Seeing as many players did unlock them (and this can be visibly checked by looking at historic living world achievements), I feel that Anet should do a patch at some point that unlocks all these skins.
Anet has done such lookups on logins on many occasions. I just find it annoying that I’m going to have to look at the locked “Toxic injector” back piece slot in the wardrobe without any way of unlocking it, despite having a completed achievement in my achievements panel which proves without a doubt that I’ve unlocked it :/
Personally though, I’m lucky enough to have hoarded every historic achievement skin except that toxic injector and those three hideous dragon bash helmets – which are all laughing at me now -.-
Re: town clothes and outfits.
I can’t understand why this couldn’t be implemented better.
I understand some mixing and matching of things so they would fit with armor types, but the inability to dye town clothes and limited options for outfits is…strange.
The good is that I don’t have 8 copies of town clothes in my inventory.
The bad/odd is that I have clothes shaped tonics instead that are red and black.
I like so much about the update, but this particular part of the Wardrobe feature needs so polish.
In the wardrobe introduction blog (https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/introducing-the-wardrobe-system/), it clearly says:
" Unlocked skins can be applied to items infinitely (for just one Transmutation Charge), which makes it much less stressful to try out a new look for your character, since you can always switch back!"
yet it doesn’t seem to work that way in-game.
This is quite disappointing, I should say.
Transmutation charges should be discounted or free for a character below lvl 80.
Reason: levels 1-79 have to change their gear every 5-10 levels. A level 80 never has to anymore so there is no fear of the transmutation charge being wasted on gear that is going to be replaced in 5 levels. You will still get sale of the charges to people because a portion of the player base likes to change their look every so often.
At least you guys have your town cloths. My witch outfit, horns, toys etc. all still remain hidden on my toons – I know from the hats for sure, because when hovering over my quaggan hat, that is in my inventory, I can see them as “currently equipped”.
I can, however, not equip the quaggan hat. Rightclicking it only gives me the option to destroy it & it is not a selectable skin in my wardrobe. My outfit isn’nt in the bank or any other wardrobe, either (any towncloth, really). The Black Lion Weapon Specialist doesn’t have any options for me, other than ticket skins, the link to the BLK and smalltalk. x3

You need to talk to a Black Lion Armorsmith, not Weapon Specialist. They are located around the same area. They will unlock all your town clothing (gotta do this for every character you have that is wearing town clothing).
Lady Bethany Of Noh – Chronomancer – Lords of Noh [LoN]
So, basically the wardrobe system is a way to use whatever gear you want and have maximum stats in a combat situation. And to do this, you gotta pay (after you’ve used up your saved charges).
I think I’ll just stick to what I’ve been doing so far and swap my armor on manually depending on what I feel like.

I was looking for him in gendarran fields and for some reason they only have the weapon smith there. In any other major cities they have both. Thanks a lot! =)
I must say that the change to the Town Clothes system (into tonics) is a real shame and a terrible disappointment.
I chose the pieces I wanted to use and I mixed and matched and dyed my town clothes to be exactly what I wanted. I even bought dyes to make the pieces look the way I felt was best. I kept my favourite town clothes ready and hot-keyed of whenever I was out of action.
Now I cannot dye my town clothes.
Now I cannot mix and match my town clothes.
Now my set of reading glasses (for my thief) have been converted into a LIGHT skin, so I can’t use them.
I’m not much of a WTF! person, but, seriously: WTF!?
It’s not as if people didn’t want/buy/use Town Clothes.
I’d be happy to keep a set as armour somewhere if I had to, but this is a real sad move.
I have a lot of skins in my bank that now read “Skin Locked” where before they were supposed to be applied to an existing item. Does this mean that they’re worthless now?
I miss being able to run around in my underwear. Where is the hide all option?
We need a way to take upgrades out of un salvageable gear (Karma, WvW, Dungeon).
I’m not sure in which of the “Update” threads should I post a question about the changes to the Hero Panel.
I’m courious why the icon representing character’s personality (and charm/dignity/ferocity) was removed from the Hero Panel?
but you ain’t got many…
OLD AND BOLD CHARR! OLD BOLD CHARR!!!
I already made a topic about this, but I guess I should’ve posted in here instead:
They new wardrobe system is great, but it has inadvertently (or perhaps deliberately) removed the only affordable method of extracting runes from otherwise unsalvageable temple karma armor. Previously we could transmute the rune into a set of armor that can be salvaged, then salvage that to get the rune, which contributed to the 6g~7g price tag of most temple runes we see on the market today; now, however, the only option is to buy a single use upgrade extractor for 250 gems (at the time of this post that would cost a whopping 28g), so once the current supply of runes run out we’re going to see the price quadruple (if anyone bothers extracting and selling it at all, that is).
Please either make karma armor salvageable or slash the price of upgrade extractors to something reasonable like 30 gems (5 for 150 gems, same pricing as transmutation charges).
Hello,
I have a question and I would apologize if this is already asked.
For Wardrobe and Dye unlock, will they stay unlocked even all the character in the account has deleted?
I wonder if the new character is still able to use the unlocked skins and dyes even after all the previous character has deleted.
Thank you in advance!
