Team KYSA from Fissure of Woe talks about why guild halls should be introduced, what should be introduced in it and ideas how it can benefit players.

Thanks in advance – please take some time out to listen to us having a conversation about ideas for guild halls – It is an hour long but you could listen to the first 15minutes if you like or even tab out while listening (Kinda like a radio hehe)

We felt the need to do this because:

1) No one else has had a discussion about guild halls for gw2 on youtube as we’ve seen so far

2) We (and i’m pretty sure almost the rest of the gw2 community are very very VERY) eager to see guild halls introduced not because of how great it was in GW1 but also because guild housing is a great aspect of any MMO

Big shout out to my guildies who came and those who supported the talk and our ideas

Stay blessed – Team KYSA

Apparently even SWTOR is getting it now.

I’m fine if GW2 doesn’t do individual player housing, but I really wish we could at least have guild halls again. =/

Something I have been begging for since launch was guild halls.. Destroying LA at least gives me a little glimmer of hope for them since the major hub is now just a burning pile.

Why they would waste time that kind of kitten? Idea is play game not sit inside some house. Weird thing is that people are interest some houses. In Russian game allods you could buy own ship and sail on special zones with party. Well system was total kitten, but at least it was more interesting than some housing system.

I’m cool with whatever they could implement that will house me and those I select and keep the rest out while adding city conveniences. And why not invest time in this… Better than more Zerg content.

Did I say I want player housing?

For people who do not understand it, you don’t have to get one if you don’t want- many people have been asking for this since launch

It really depends on how it’s implemented. If they did something remotely like GW1, then it would be awesome:

In GW1, you had halls that all guild mates could port to. In these halls, you could purchase NPCs to make your hall pretty much like a main town. This really helped build community and was a great place for holding guild meetings.

On top of this, the guild hall served as a map for GvG games, so you could work out strategies in your guild hall for the next patch. The maps were also interesting since they had their own unique set of traps/obstacles. For example, there was a fiery volcano-like hall that had molten lava pits, in others there were spike traps, etc.

Technically, we have player housing now…but it’s just an instanced area that has some nodes you can mine. So yea, if that’s all housing ends up being, then it is lame. However, it can be something great if done right.

I am against housing because the housing crowd is generally childish and rude and would harass me for my supposed lack of taste in house decoration.

Also you already have the home istance. Why do you think it’s called →home<- istance?

Star Wars Galaxies (pre-combat “upgrade”) had the best housing/city building of any MMO.

Even Asheron’s Call housing system was pretty legit til the population of the game died down.

However, with the play style of GW2 against those MMO’s… housing isn’t really needed. IMO

You, sir, are now one of my favorite people. I loved AC, and I loved the player housing they created for it. You had little neighborhoods (or lived in apartment buildings if you were poor). No joke I would hang out with my neighbors because your house can be out in the middle of nowhere with 6-10 other houses and you walk around to your neighbors and make friends and check out their stuff. Was pretty awesome.

I even remember how to get to my house, you had to go to Lytlethorpe, then run southwest for 5-8 minutes (depending on your Run skill, god I loved being able to upgrade run speed— and jump skill too for that matter, nothing like jumping over treetops from a standstill, so awesome)

It was also first come first served, which was an interesting way to do housing. You wanted to get a house? They would randomly become available, you had to find the neighborhood which could be anywhere, find out what the random item was that needed to be collected to turn in for a Writ of ownership then beat everyone else to turning it in. Also you paid a hefty fee of course. Was an exhilarating scavenger type hunt. Still gets my heart pumping thinking about it. Luckily the item I needed for my house I happened to have on me already so I got the first one!

Ha! Man I could talk for hours about AC. I played from Sept 2000 til 2006 pretty much daily (when I could) and then from 2006-2009 off and on. I played on Harvestgain.

Anyways, not to hijack the tread.. With most of GW2 being instanced, it wouldn’t be nearly as fun to have housing as it was in the open world games where you could be running around and exploring and then just come across a small neighborhood. Heck, sometimes you’d even come across one and they would be having a small PvP tournament seeing who was “king” of their neighborhood. That was always enjoyable.

SWG did it right IMO because of the factions.. Imperial alliances could build cities (huge or small) and set up storm, scout, and whatever other kind of troopers as well as AT-ST’s and stuff to defend it. A organized rebel alliance would locate it and even attack it which if left un-attended would result in you losing buildings in your city. It would notify everyone online in the alliance that their city was under attack and the next thing you know, you have this huge war going on outside your front door. There was also a lot more you were capable of doing housing and city wise in SWG. But that was all open world.

Guild halls I could see being pretty cool but specific housing instances (aside from the already “home” instance) would be a wasted amount of resources and effort to implement when there is so much other things they could be working on.

I guess it could be another gold sink for them to put in place though.

I am not against those who want housing…

but personally, I don’t want it.

1. It’s a money pit, not just a gold sink. In some games, you never really “owned” your house, you had to “rent” it for a sum that you had trouble trying to make in a week.

2. If all you want a house for is to show off your stuff, then I would prefer to re-institute the HoM.

3. In GW2, I would bet that most of the furnishings and shineys would either be cash-shop only or RNG keys

I just don’t see the use for them in this game. I would much rather see Guild Halls with conveniences such as a bank, trader, and MF, than a house that rarely anyone but me would see.

As long as it revolves around karma/Reward Items. A housing system much like Rift’s would bring me back. Player housing is a great window of opportunity and a good way to show off some of the items they worked on in the environment. Just look at all the cool ambient items there are in this game.

Guild Wars 2 is not a sequel to the original Guild Wars but merely an alternative story setting.

I would accept Guild Halls instead of Player Housing for sure. They are the people I’d want to hang out with anyway. Maybe you can eventually upgrade it to have crafting stations, laurel merchant, activity person, merchants, repair guy, class trainer, TP, bank, etc. Possibly even gathering nodes. (likely a gem store purchase, but I have no doubt the guild would pool gold together to convert to gems for this)

Would be awesome.

The thing about player housing is it’s a total win-win. The players who want it get what they want while ArenaNet could monetize the crap out of it through the gem store.

Don’t get me wrong, housing items should be attainable in ways other than the gem store (laurels, mats, crafting, completing events, heart quests, exploring, guild merits and influence, etc.); the gem store would just be one option for rapidly purchasing the structural elements for building and the items for decorating one’s house.

Again, this is another win-win. By giving players multiple paths by which they can construct and decorate their homes, it’s more inclusive. This opens up the possibility that some of those players initially disinclined to buy housing items on the gem store may eventually make a purchase in the interest of saving time.

Contrast this with a system whereby the only path to home ownership is through the gem store and there would likely be fewer players who would participate (i.e. ArenaNet would be shooting themselves in the foot by limiting their potential player housing consumer base).

Player housing is not for everyone, but – for those who take an interest in it – they tend to be very passionate about it. This usually translates into a greater willingness to make a real-money purchase.

Personally, if this were implemented, I’d like to see it put into the open world (with appropriate restrictions, of course) rather than an instance; similar to Asheron’s Call and Star Wars Galaxies described in previous posts. Collaboratively-built player outposts, villages, and towns.

Guild halls could even be included in such a scenario with the ability to play GvG in the open world (the guild hall would be a village or town built by the guild). Just like the food fights and costume brawls, the combat would be limited to only those who opt in and are members of the respective guilds who have chosen to duel. Such battles would have no impact on the surrounding environment nor on guild members who have chosen to sit out the fight or non-guild members.

About a year prior to launch I had made a suggestion on the GW1 wiki which included a detailed discussion of player housing (GW2 didn’t yet have a suggestion wiki of its own at that time; an area was set up on the GW1 wiki for doing this). The part dealing with housing starts about half way down the page. It’s a little dated in light of the fact the suggestion was made before GW2 even launched; but the fundamentals are still applicable.

I won’t say it’s a win-win but it’s close. I would put effort into my own home if they were introduced but it’s not something I’m wanting them to put in the game. Will Anet win because of potential $$$ thru gem store? Absolutely. Will players that want the housing market win? Of course.

What about the “lack” of balanced professions that people often complain about? Heck I could probably make a list of plenty of things that I have read multiple different forum posts about issues that I would say should be taken care of long before I see homes introduced into the game.

Either way it goes, you’ll have the players that want homes complaining about not having them and then if they get introduced, you’ll have the players who don’t care about them complaining about how so many other things are still messed up.. why is anet focusing on houses??

Personally, I’ll be fine either way. Still got a lot of other goals in game to occupy my time long before I start wishing I had a house to show off my awesome achievements lol.

Also, I would be much more incline to the idea if the game was actually guild vs guild oppose to wvwvw. I would love to login and walk out on the deck of a guild mansion and see 100 players from another guild trying to storm in. The alliance attacks in both AC and SWG that I was involved in are some of my most favorite memories of the games.

Yes, if they’re dumb about it, it would be nothing more than another gem store cash grab. If they’re smart, though, they’d consider the path I suggested above of allowing housing components to be obtained from multiple sources. The gem store would simply be a convenience allowing players to obtain these components faster; but not exclusive to the gem store.

Yes, I agree there are other fundamental changes that need to happen first. However, I post in suggestion threads without taking that into consideration so it doesn’t get in the way of fully fleshing out an idea or seeing where it can be taken. It’s a brainstorm session meant to throw out any crazy dream that comes along rather than a design and development meeting where real-world constraints and resource management stifle creative ideas. That’s ArenaNet’s job. As players, we’re free to put forward any thing that pops into our heads and then let the developers sift through it and implement what they determine to be feasible.

Probably. But this isn’t necessarily a bad thing in itself. It’s bad if poorly implemented. Done right, housing could become a collaborative effort undertaken by a group of players collectively contributing mats (or whatever). This wouldn’t be limited to just guilds; friends or even sub-segments of a server could accomplish the same thing.

It would be a great opportunity for building communities through building houses requiring a variety of skill sets to complete, maintain, and defend (crafters, explorers, farmers, PvPers, etc.). Houses which then become outposts, grow into villages, and mature to become towns or cities. Communities in which everyone who “lives” there had a direct hand in bringing it into existence.

Guild halls > player housing.

Seriously. You have player housing ITS CALLED HOME INSTANCE.

What we have is a static, ArenaNet-created instance over which we have no control beyond finishing an achievement that gives us a node or two to mine. That’s not the same as player housing.

Player housing is the ability to create – from scratch – a virtual dwelling customized to our own tastes. It’s about the freedom to creatively express one’s self in the game in a way that the home instance does not allow.

What’s more is, if you add in the ability for groups of players to collaborate together in the construction of an outpost, village, or town, you’ve now created a powerful community building tool.

Lastly, with regards to guild halls, which would you prefer:

A) A static template chosen from a limited pool who’s layout is dictated by ArenaNet and which your potential GvG opponents will likely know the layout of, as well. All of it locked away in some sterile, compartmentalized instance hidden from the open world.

OR

B) A guild hall you’ve custom built to your own specifications in which your guild and your guild alone knows the layout; being completely foreign to an attacking guild and giving you the home team advantage (at least on initial encounter).

Include on top of that the “pride of ownership” that comes from your guild having worked together to build your very own guild hall exactly the way you want it.

Now, put it into the persistent open world where you can duel with rival guilds for “territory” (only within the context of GvG; it wouldn’t impact the game experience for PvE players who don’t wish to participate).

I’d choose (B), myself.

I am 100percent for this, I have even made a similar thread without a vid, I will copy and past my ideas from that thread to this one:

From guild wars one I have wondered is there going to be a guilds hall in guild wars 2. Of course I know now that it did not happen so I have decided to get this post out there. I apologize if a post like this has been already made but I have problems with this forums search tool. That said I will now continue with this idea
With this, guilds will be able to customize a map( about the size of lions arch) with different themes, for example a winter map, fire map, under water map, sky map or better yet just a nice peaceful green land full of rabbits, bunnies and lots of dolyaks. This guild map could have a main house which could also be customized as in a castle, mansion or something like the hall of monuments.
Another great feature could be picture frames. With picture frames maybe guild leaders can upload print screens of their guild, guild leader or special event which the guild enjoyed to place on the wall of their guild house for memory sake/ decorations. This idea should give all members of the guild benefits, as players would be able to instant teleport and use the facilities available in their guild mainland, such as asura gates, merchants, crafting stations and even the mystic forge all with a cost. All in all it would be another lions arch but you will be hanging out with guild mates and friends. I also think it would be great if people could visit other peoples guild lands to look at the different styles etc( maybe all of the benefits such as crafting etc should go if your a visitor)
This is your guilds land to control, there should be as many options as possible to change the style so it does not seem like each guild looks the same or has the same features. So maybe you could keep selling new themes in the gemstone per month or so. (Halloween theme would be cool)
Since this is a guild effort, it would involve every person in the guild to contribute, kinda like making a legendary but with a hundred more people, so it should be impossible to obtain with a 4 man guild. It should involve a lot of cash, guild reputation and missions to be done to get the best of the best looking map.
This could also effect the living story, so instead of scarlet attacking lions arch, maybe she could have attacked your guilds land instead. From here who knows maybe we could start seeing some guild wars as in two guilds raid each other’s maps for rewards on their own.

I’d rather see dev tim spent for housing that would be long time fun for a lot of players instead of creating new dungeons like Etherblade that noone plays anymore.

Also i don’t believe that the same devs that would create housing are also responsible for things likes balancing new classes and skills.

EVERY MMO is awesome until it is released then its unfinished. A month after release it just sucks.

Player housing is the ability to create – from scratch – a virtual dwelling customized to our own tastes. It’s about the freedom to creatively express one’s self in the game in a way that the home instance does not allow.

- There’s a game just for you. It’s called Sims.

What’s more is, if you add in the ability for groups of players to collaborate together in the construction of an outpost, village, or town, you’ve now created a powerful community building tool.

- Simcity.

You’re asking for Anet to hand you over the whole developing environment so you a) can make a house for yourself b) add that house as part of the game world. You can make this happen if you spend some millions of dollars to buy majority share of Anet from NCsoft. Other than this way, it’s never going to happen.

Take a look at what SOE does with Landmark for EQNext. And SOE had great housing in EQ2 and also in SWG afaik, and as a long time EQ2 player i know that a lot of people loved it and the crafting developer was the most loved dev in the game.

Thanks, Zenith, for clarifying that. I’m glad to have heard from the majority stock holder of NCSoft letting us know the future development path that the ArenaNet developers will be taking with GW2.

/sarcasm

That said, the developers will build whatever the player base are willing to pay for. Just because you personally don’t have any desire for player housing doesn’t mean you speak for those that do. In any game that has included player housing, that aspect of the game has been quite successful. If ArenaNet can figure out how to monetize it (and they will), you can bet player housing will come to GW2 eventually.

In sims you take control over 1-8 characters, you shape their lives and you interact with the people around you.
In gw2 you take control over 1 character, you shape their story and you interact with both NPCs and other players.

And I’m sure that even an insignificant little omnipotent whelp like yourself is perfectly capable of comprehending the actual differences between the 2 games, why you choose not to is none of my concerns.

What’s more is, if you add in the ability for groups of players to collaborate together in the construction of an outpost, village, or town, you’ve now created a powerful community building tool.

Now you’re just making up similarities that aren’t even there, in Sim City you take on the role of a mayor and you develop an entire towns infrastructure all by yourself, what is being suggested by Kraag is closer to Salem or one of the many survival games out there, where you build your own housing and then group together with other players to form a larger settlement.

Considering you just put the restrictions in play yourself: Have you invested these “some millions of dollars” and bought the majority of the stocks and can thus with certainty inform us that the development of housing is definitly not going to happen.. And if so could you perhaps wave your shares around abit and persuade them into fixing some of the other stuff that is currently abit whack?

I myself would be more interested in player housing then guild halls aka guild housing.

- You have your house already. That’s your home instance. When was the last time you visited it?

I am sorry but the home instance is in no way, shape or from player housing.

I realize you are very against the idea but you have to also realize that many many GW2 players have been asking- no begging- for player housing since launch.

Make no mistake- Anet is very aware of that, what is more they are also aware of how player housing and the associated game mechanics can impact the game.
See the horizontal progression CDI.

I think it is only a matter of time until we get player housing.
Personally I cannot wait

I made the following Personal Housing = New Crafting + Karma post about 8 months ago. As it ties in with what is being discussed in this thread, it seems appropriate to link it here.

The following thread is related to this one. They’re not identical; the linked thread speaks to Guild Halls specifically while this one expands upon the concept to include player Personal Housing. However, there may be ideas from both threads which synergize with one another; so there is value in establishing a connection between them.

There are multiple threads on both housing and guild halls going back months, all the way to launch. There is no reason to link any here except to ask the mods to merge them. There is also no reason to keep bring it up over and over again in new threads. It’s not an original idea, if you have something to add to the discussions, please reply in one of the already existing threads so all players opinions and thoughts can be kept in one place.

Make it easy on the devs, mods and other players, stop making duplicate threads.
