Dear Everyone,

I hear it in videos on youtube, I read it in the news paper… Guild Wars 2 has a great community…

However in every community you have the rotten apples. Why do I always meet them everywhere I go?

I consider myself a decent person and a avarage gamer meaning I am nice (when people are nice to me to) and I got a few skills I guess…
Still the mean ppl who play GW2 know to find me and tear the blood from under my nails. Already have I had to report several people for herassment. Already have my feelings been hurt several times. I have been scolded at with several names going from noob to ‘ur a ****ing idiot’ or worse…

and for what? I will tell you… one of many examples…

Ascalonian Catacombs – Looking for more members… ONLY level 80… wtf?
Knowing this dungeon is for people arround lvl 35 and being my curious self, I asked some of these people why they asked for lvl 80 payers only…
Reason nr1: Level 80 players are better players. (I laughed)
Reason nr2: Lvl 80 players have more skills unlocked (I can understand this argument)
Reason nr3: Lvl 80 players have more skills unlocked and are therefor better players. (I laughed again)

Seriously… I really do not know what to say to this. Is this happening only on my server or what LOL… I can honestly say that some runs with lvl 35 players went A LOT better then when I was with some lvl 80 players. Ofcourse being lvl 80 with most skills unlocked and max gear makes it a lot easier, it doesn’t mean that someone at a lower lvl can’t be as good. When I tried to discuss it ingame with a few people, some reacted with: w/e A few said; maybe you are right. Some didn’t say anyting back anymore and some told me to **** off.

Another example…

Citadel of Flame – Dungeon Path (I forgot atm) ‘The path with the 4 Acolytes at the end wich you have to kill (preferably at the same time) to then be able to damage a huge (boss) rock…’ lol

While one members is distracting the charr boss, the others and I try to find our way to the acolytes that we have to kill. 4 acolytes, 4 people, one for each person … simple right?
I am the first one to reach one of the acolytes in the back… We start killing them tho I then suddenly notice that one of my teammates runs also to my place… leaving one acolyte without a person to kill it and messing up the spawning time… I get the blame for this… why ? I do not know… Looking back at it, I think they thought I got there second instead of my other teammate…?!
I run to the last acolyte and kill it so we can all damage the big rock… My team mates freak out when their acolytes spawn again and mine has not yet appeared (since I had to kill it later then the rest) Totally freaking out, saying I am afk, a slacker, a noob blabla Saying I have to kill my acolyte (wich still didnt spawn…) When I finally killed it, I get blamed that I should have waited for the other 3 to spawn again… (in the meantime the big rock thing could already have been destroyed but okay…)
I try to explain them again… They only freak out more when I try to tell them to relax and that it’s all not such a big deal if one acolyte is killed later… The rock thing drops fast in HP and it’s not really that difficult to destroy it…blabla They freak out even more what ended up in to me getting kicked from the team…

Some people are insane…. Seriously people… Have you forgotten that it is iportant to have fun? Instead of calling people names who are ‘less’ in ur eyes? Because that is NOT fun… That is just a sad thing to do. Why could they not have explained what they wanted to achieve in a friendly matter… Because they are the rotten apples of GW2… Unfortunatly, every game has them.

Do any of you ever have these kind of issues? Share your story with me, get it of your chest as I did and let’s make Anet aware of these things happening ingame.

I warned my team mates that I would report them and they laughed in my face saying Anet only deletes those reports anyway. So I reported them anyway…
A week banned from the game would be a nice thing for them! Unfortunatly I do not have such awesome powers and will never know what happend to my herassers.

Dear Anet… I hope you take your reports seriously. A few insults I can take, but if more and more come, the game just will not be fun for me anymore.
I found a nice guild and I am seeing some of that great community you speak of… but I ask you not to cut back on things as herasment reports eventho you guys must be increadably bussy with this awesome game. – Thank you!

Transfer to Dragonbrand and join my guild. We do dungeons almost exclusively, besides the random days everyone rolls an alt to power level so we have another character to…do dungeons with. Our entire purpose to exist is just so we have to spend as little time LFG and playing with randoms as possible, and when we do it’s a 4/5 guild group so the person can’t really act up for fear of das boot.

Pugs are bad. At their absolute worst when 1:1 interaction is involved and at their best when they are amassed into a giant zerg running in the same general direction as your purpose, but in that case they can barely be considered individuals, which makes them no longer people.

On the rare occasion you find a few good ones, befriend them immediately to start building a social circle for the things you like doing. It will slowly grow and you will be less dependent on the general population of kittenheads. That’s how I ended up with a guild ^.^

Reason nr1: Level 80 players are better players. (I laughed)

Actually, he might have meant that in a different way than you expected. Once you level a character to 80, try going back to a zone where it levels you down to about 35. You’re going to do MUCH better than you would have done when you were actually 35. You’re going to blow things away compared to others who are actually 35 in the zone.

Also, dungeons are VERY hard. I did AC with a group of 4 level 80s, and one character in the upper 50s… and we died lots. We had all agreed that we would not have had a chance if we were all actually 35. So as long as dungeons remain the way they are now… and the level scaling continues to work the way it does… I won’t run any dungeons on any of my characters until they hit 80.

So I think that’s what he meant. I don’t think he meant that level 80s are better “players”, but that they are much more powerful when compared to lower level players… even though they are “leveled down” to the same level.

I will have to say we are a small guild on whiteside ridgeserver and tried AC exp mode when we were in our 50s and basicaaly got our kitten handed to us.

It isnt really about the level you are it is the skills you have as when you get to 80 you can bring all your skills to the grp as they dont go away when you get deleveled i would think in all honesty that is why they only wanted level 80s for the run.

We now as a guild run AC exp and are now working on the other but even then we only take level 80 chars to exp mode instances. Hope that helps the OP a little and explains it for them.

Yeah, im on Ghandara server and still looking for a fun guild myself, sadly most are full of Elitist players where you must have all exotics and have certain builds for you class otherwise do not apply… :-(
I admit i’m not the best player but i do ok, and my main emphasis is to have fun

Fun for me is not some kitten moaning and being abusive because i’m not doing as much damage as his pimped out warrior/Guardian etc…

Yea. Speadclears (as they say) want to clear a dungeon fast. And their fast, is really uterly fast. Doing 1 thing not the perfect way, you will slow them down, if you slow them down. You will make them mad.

Mext time, take the more casual runs, they may take longer but are much more fun!

I’ve been on a few worlds:

quick note: to be fair the way scaling works a level 80 character in full exotics can be upwards of 4x as survivable and 4x as much damage as sub 80 characters. To show the example level 80s can solo most champions up until Orr without even extensive kiting, and in damage spec will kill most enemies in one hit until at least the 40-50 zones. When leveling there on a non 80 most fights take 15-30 seconds.

Any server in any game can have an amazing guild community so I’m taking the guild experience out of the equation.

The only place I’ve noticed exceptional community is in WvWvW if there are trusted and tested officers helping people learn and understand what to do. I havn’t seen community achievements like this in any mmo in a long time (prob AO notum wars)

Other aspects of the game I’d say have the worst player community I’ve come in contact with on par with wow dungeon / raid finder/

Conversation wise: Most people want to endlessly rant about how they play the auction house to get Legendary weapons and brag about things legendary related. If you want to talk about anything but Legendary weapons it will be hard to find outside of a guild.

Dungeon groups people are obsessed with speed runs and are very unforgiving compared to most games, they expect you to instantly learn a strat where you run up a wall jump off a cliff kite through 90% of the instance then hug a thin wall and enter into a glitched part of the map where you bug out a boss then get a chest. If you don’t do this exactly with 0 instruction most people I’ve encountered become very rude. People are also very quick to leave groups or do spiteful things in pug dungeons. Most of the harder wings are absolutely impossible to build a group for and even if you do make one people will rage quit shortly into it (if it isn’t contested bugged to start already), all dungeons that become contested can not have lost members replaced if someone leaves when it becomes contested.

Discovered the one and only ecto nerf to date. Endured verbal abuse and infractions to prove it:

As has been stated there are going to be good and bad people in every community and you are going to have to sift through some bad apples to get the good ones. no game has the perfect magic community.

I would be wary of reviews for this games community though as this games forum is one of the most heavily moderated forums I have ever seen in my life.

You can thank AreaNet’s lack of any halfway decent planning for this.

There’s simply zero incentive for people to help each other out in this game thanks to level scaling and all the best rewards only being found in specific areas.

hte gw2 community is exactly like every other mmo community because it is the same people as in every community.

w/e pretensions this game had as being some how better or more righteous than other communities were quite silly to begin with, but they were further undermined by the adminstrators of that community, not just here but elsewhere. but ofc if you hav ebeen active in the mmo community for the past 5 years, you would’ve known already how fluffy and silly those pretension when stated were to begin with, though ofc the extgrmee hilarity with which those utopian goals have been executed in some kind of self destructive downward spiral of insanity which is rivaled only by the worst of the F2P management companies was not expected.

I think you are missing an important part of this problem: What was your response. Because frankly, judging by your post, it’s very … offensive and brusque. You are seriously over-reacting. If you had just chilled, not taken offense and showed a mere smooch of restrain, the argument with your party wouldn’t have escalated. In short, the problem lies with you, not the general community. I have had countless experiences with the esteemed “Nice Community”, and it is no exaggeration on anyone’s part.

I think you missed the most important part of being level 80.

It’s like a graduation cert that you seriously knows your character well, and can maneuver through unconventional situations when presented.

Compare the chances of getting a job from a higher education graduate, and someone who left school in the middle.

Not that I’m with those “80s only please”, but its a reality check, and reality sucks.

It must be a hard choice for game designers. You can either design a game with content that requires groups and being part of a guild is important – alienating the solo players. Or you can make a game which can be soloed – removing the need for socialization which in the end detracts from the game.

Hard choice.

Perhaps if there were incentives to be part of a guild, part of groups then the community would be greater.

You can craft your way up to level 80. So being 80 isn’t really a sign of knowing your class, after all you could of hit 80 without leaving your starting city. All you would need is to buy your way to 80 with gem conversions.

Besides being 80 you might never have teamed, and thus not know about such useful things as combos.

Or you could be a greedy 80 with nothing but MF gear.

Him trying to play the game and them calling him a “slacker” and “AFK” is not an over-reaction then?

And there’s no exaggeration there.

Is there really a need for name calling? Surely, I’d think you’d be more sensible than that. Anyone can insult, but it takes restrain and maturity to not insult.

For me, it’s all about joining the right guild. I never have issues with dungeons if I do runs with my guild. They don’t care what level you’re at (for FotM, we even brought a level 6! It was fun). We talk on mumble, so that helps a lot to ease any communication difficulties and directions. But mostly, when you’re in a good guild (especially one that advertises itself as a leveling guild), you’re pretty much good to go. Those people know that you’re new and they want you to get better so you can help future members.

But don’t join a primarily Dungeon or WvW guild ‘til you get used to all of them. But it’s way easier than asking the public to join your dungeon run and playing with people you don’t know.

And they have a dungeon finder which nobody really uses except for getting to the instance or set higher rewards. Groups are assembled through friend lists, guild and LFG chat channel.

In the last day my lvl 30 Ele (now 36) has been in two AC story modes and two AC exploreables. Once I was declined AC story but that was because myself and a higher level asked to join at the same time so a choice had to be made. So there are people out there willing to run with lower levels. (could this be because everyone else is in the frac and we low levels are the only ones available?) I messed up once and caused us to wipe on the three AC story mode rangers just before Nate. Was downed by a condition after a mob died and my number 4 heal button turned into ride the lightning all the way to the rangers before our group was even aware or ready. Hehe. No on said anything not one thing except me who said sorry. Community is seeming pretty good to me.

Have one 80 and it is easier as an 80. One… if all your gear is also 80 you wont suffer from wierd gear downscaling which I understand makes you weaker than you might expect. Two… I have no elite skills yet such as “Thieves Guild” from my 80 thief. That elite was handy for bringing a noticable dps increase to a mob.

AC story mode at lvl 30 Ele was easier in all lvl 30 gear than say as a lvl 34 Ele still with lvl 30 gear imo. Could be my imagination but it feels that way.

All I did in wow was random dungeon finder. Never know what you are gonna get its good fun! Wow healer says “Can you guys wait ten minutes I’m baking a cake.” Response “Sure…(20 minutes to find another healer)”. Favorite memory clearing most of a dungeon as the tank while thinking “man this healer sucks”… he was afk for like 15 minutes and I didnt notice his AFK in chat. I was kicked but I loved it. Pugs are great! Hehe Im probably why some of you hate pugs….

There are some of them just not willing to read the chat, attacking all and everything they see and activating all sorts of traps which kill the whole group. But, more often, my PUGs are nicely if you just do what you have to, or say something, if it was your fault that the group failed. No one needs to be the best player ever, no one needs to never make mistakes. Just be nice, ask if there is a problem and don’t get rude or claim everyone else are noobs… Just evade the word “noob” and everything will be fine =) And don’t forget to read the chat.
(well, 80% of the cases, the other 20% are just PUGs you don’t even want to try to play with… but well… that’s life ^^)

I see we are back on topic again :p No more making commercial notes for me joining a guild.
A lot of opinions have been given. Some with a little rude tone, but maybe my first post had a rude tone in it aswell. I just do not understand why some people just have to be such giant jerks in the game. It is so frustrating. I mean I have enough trouble in real life, so I wanna relax and have fun online. Not get my feelings bashed in even more.

The other day I met a total jerk who I ended up blocking and reporting. You know what he even said to me before I did so? That in real life he’s a great mr. nice guy but when he comes to play this game he is a jerk. Can u believe that… Why would anyone log into a game and just be an jerk all day just because they can? I guess I answered my own question :/

Some of you people have more luck meeting the nicer side of the community then I have. I’m happy I have a nice guild and all but it would be so much more fun to randomly meet ppl and have a good time then get bashed on for no reason.

This is what happens when level 35 content extends to level 80 players. While the idea was good on paper… players are what make it a horrible concept. Not 80? dont expect to run anything period in this game unless its with your guild… other then that good luck.

They tried to make the game open to all by letting low levels participate with high levels in content but it had a reverse effect only resulting in anger. Fotm was introduced…. you can run it before 80…. knowing this players try to get groups before being 80 only to be harshly rejected and subjected to rude behavior. This was a major oversight on Anet’s side of things. And it fractures the player base on a daily basis. Then on top of that the leveling system for progression on FotM is a double whammy. Not only do you have to be 80 but you have to be the same progression level.

I would like to say it was a simple mistake… but it follows a trend of poorly implemented good ideas. They need someone on the Anet team that can foresee these problems when they get good ideas and counter them before damage is done to the player base due to insufficient foresight.

I have had similier experiances, that’s why I avoid pugs. The last one I tried was in a group with 4 members of the same guild. We faught all the way to the last boss, then they told me I had to pay a gold to each of them to continue or I would be kicked from the group. I just ported out on my own.

BUT, I have also met some very nice players as well. I was having a problem getting to a vista point as I do not do jumping very well. Another player came over and walked me through each of the jumps one by one until I was able to do it. There was absolutly no incentive for him, other then being nice to a fellow player. I have had others come over and help me fight to get a skill point or a chest after they already got it for themselves.
It’s just like real life, there are players who suck and some of the nicest people you would want to meet. Just ignore the bad, and enjoy the good, it’s all you can do.

I can’t help but notice that you didn’t mention people farming/crafting, doing DE’s in your post.

See here’s the thing. I know it’s been said time and time again that there’s a big problem with dungeon only progression but now we’re really beginning to see just how ugly it can be all because someone wanted to attract those players to this title.

I NEVER run into those people. Why? Because I never do dungeons anymore. There’s a reason why I left WoW behind, there’s a reason why people left SWTOR behind.

And THIS is the reason.

The majority of those players are the types who don’t care about whether you are there to have fun, they don’t care that it’s supposed to be a side distraction and not the focus of the game. They only care about successful runs 100% of the time, they only care about what level you are and if you are already in full exotic gear BEFORE you get into the dungeon.

Sad to say but that’s so many of us in the community was against them nerfing drops everywhere else but in dungeons, adding a dungeon with the single tier anyone will be interested in as their new model to attract new players, because those of us who have played mmo’s for years KNOW what these types of players are like.

It’s no myth there’s years of history for this problem in every mmo out there. It’s not new or mysterious.

I made a post along these lines earlier this week. People seem to forget that we’re all trying to get to the same place and do the same things. Berating your team members solves exactly nothing and makes them more inclined to screw up because they’re now nervous, or just want to do something out of spite to the person who berated them.

My suggestion is to hold these people accountable. Report them if you wish, but moreover tell them directly, “I don’t need to be yelled at. If you explain yourself without frothing at the mouth like Cujo, I’ll get it.” Also try to be the one explains content, etc. to people who that might not know or understand it. Set the example, people will follow it. Even in small amounts, it does something to make the community better. You won’t change everybody, but a few make a difference.

Guild Wars 2 presently benefits from a pretty large player base. Don’t give up in PuG’s. Some of them can go bad, yes but I’ve had a few that were very much worth the experience. There’s a lot of people just like you who just want to play and aren’t going to level/gear/kitten check you to do so.

EDIT: Because kitten checks are the most important ones.

To the moderators and intended with respect:
Please, don’t let this thread become a shining example to an old adage from online forums

“don’t like a thread? flame and spam it til it’s dead”

Stop the players who initiate the improper arguments not the ones that react and stand up for themselves unless they go overboard, recognise ad hominem and give people chances to alter their approach to disagreements and discussion should you think that they aren’t doing it intentionally, but don’t threaten to lock a thread thereby giving those that would rather it not be discussed the ammunition and method to do so.
If you punish people by closing down lines of discussion, you simply punish the majority for the sake of the minority who can’t disagree respectfully. It’s not like this doesn’t warrant discussion.

Now on to the topic at hand:

The issue is simply accountability, more and more in online gaming these minority toxic players who are seeking attention are allowed to run free.
In World of Warcraft they can do dungeons, and pretty much act how they want because so what? they’ve got the medium to scream and shout hate and abuse and take their own mental illness, depression or insert problem here out on a world and whereas in real life they face consequences of this action, in that game they can just get kicked, and then re-queue up again and straight back into another dungeon.
Some argue that it’s only the minority that cause this issue but it only takes ONE encounter with someone like this to ruin someone’s experience that session of gaming, and perhaps begin souring them to the game if nothing seems to be done about it. It used to be that players that behaved like this would end up excluded by communities and generally unable to do most of the content in the game if they took it too far. But that’s not the case anymore, and it’s also begun to breed a new generation of single player mentality mmo players, a term and notion which seems so contradictory it’s not even funny, who think NOTHING of anyone but themselves and care nowt for how they present themselves to other players.

If we look at a good example of how to deal with this then the league of legends tribunal system does it brilliantly, your reward is a cleaner community, the punishments are usually strong enough to get to hitting the middle ground players that would with some boundaries simply start behaving, and act as a way of venting to those that had a matchup with a toxic player and would like to channel their ire towards the problem by judging in the tribunal. And for those hard core psycho/sociopaths who just don’t want to clean up their act, they can be removed permanently if needs be.

I would implore players to start doing things for themselves, and for the games Developers to HELP the player-base to help keep their community clean, it costs little to put a dustpan and brush into a decent community members hands and say “he’s a kitten see what he’s done and decide if he should go in the trash”
At least it’s better than antagonizing them ingame when they /m “looking for 80’s only” etc only to be met with the most horrific and backwards logical fallacies disguised as arguments.

Irony…. xD

There are plenty of nice people in this community. As others have suggested, finding the right guild can make ALL the difference in your experience.

Probably the biggest tips I can give people for make sure things stay nice:

  • Don’t react immediately and emotionally
  • Discuss the ideas, not the person and avoid accusatory language
  • Always remember you may be wrong and that there’s other ways to look at things
  • Consider whether what you’re about to say or do will make another player’s game experience less enjoyable or more enjoyable and go for “more enjoyable.”
The obstacle is the path.

Sorry to say GW2 does not have a good community. I no longer play the game with map chat on I always have it turned off. The bad apples are the reason I don’t pug or group up with anyone. And name calling is verbal abuse, report anyone doing it. I play on Dragonbrand server and found more bad apples than good ones.. It is really sad to find so many unsavory players tainting this community. And I thought the wow community was bad.. I feel this one takes the cake. Sorry, jinsei that you had to experience such behavior, but don’t give up, there are good helpful players in this game.

Together we stand in the face of evil!

I would like to respond only to the name of the topic. Yes, GW2 had the friendliest community of an MMO of this scale I’ve seen. Unfortunately a lot of it has been focused on Fractals and the general tone resulting from them is rather more negative do to the giant community split the new content has caused. We see more impatience and intolerance in Fractals now than I’d seen in the entire month I’d played before-hand.

The in-game community is still great if you’re not trying to find a group for fractals. Dealing with a couple semi-elitists who want to up their chances of having a fast dungeon run in AC or something isn’t something unique to this game. I see a whole lot less of such attitudes in this game than others. People exploring and leveling are still awesome and so long as the Fractal mentality manages to stay quarantined in the Fractals dungeon levels I think I can deal with it being left there. They really should move it out of Lion’s Arch though.

Players acting this way is the new norm because vertical progression has changed the incentives. When you’re racing to the top there is an incentive to be a jerk. Being a jerk will make those slowing your progress down to get out of the way. Acting like an kitten also signals to other players that you’re leet because others will put up with your behavior because they want to progress as well. Welcome to the new Tyria.

dungeons must bring out the worst in people sometimes, so i stopped playing them altogether.

probably easier to find some friends to run with.

+1 which is a big part of he angst, the new gear found only in dungeons

I just wanted to add one point to the discussion.

As much as I agree with the OP about players who appear elitist, the game design is partly at fault here.

When I see complaints about this I agree, but can’t complain much. The reason being is this game maintains a high gear repair cost. When you have high repair costs then people have good reason to require better gear or better (Higher skills opened) players. Another example is gear gauges. I don’t condone those who want a gear gauge implemented in the game but with high gear repair costs I understand why they might want it.

I can only say there are PUGS who are less demanding than your examples and lots of guilds are setup without those restrictions. If there are none on your server maybe you should consider switching, because there are lots of people who are in the same space as you are wanting to do content but finding it difficult to do it.

progression in the form of advantage over others by stats, just turns out the worst people ever..

Yesterday i entered a random group for lvl 10 fractal >.>

First request:“link equipment” (i mean are you serious its LVL 10 its easy……its not lvl 20)
Well i had also 10 agony resistance so i linked….

Then one of those guys yelled we should do everything he asked (see in the stage of the giant in the aoe area we wanted to stay in the larger safe area rather than in the small one and he got mad, i mean its not 30 seconds for a more risky route that make the difference…)

Not to mention how he asked to kill the first boss -.- (exploit i think quite known ….but really unnecessary considering how is easy).

Then a player DC (or just left because that player was utterly boring) and he proceeded yelling at us O___o because that guy DCed……

This just after another group that broke with people angry between themselves

Well this is a big part (with many exceptions of course) of the audience who wants vertical progression……

You could say this is not politically correct, but i think we have enough experience with mmorpgs to say this is quite true.

I NEVER heard any insult before this fractal update .-. on gw2….

p.S: for the lvl 80 request instead is different….i agree with them, AC is too hard to be done efficiently with a party of low levels

GW2 balance:
A PvE player is supposed to avoid a 1-2 second 1 shotting aoe.
A WWW player is considered uncapable of avoiding a 5,75 second aoe for half his health.
